Optimal Settings for Running Parallels on Mac for L4

Hi everyone,
I am a new mac user and I just installed L4 using Parallels. I really don't want to mess with the mac version until it is not as clumsy. I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to show me how to have my settings as best as possible to run L4 on a mac (I have 4 G Ram and 320 Gig HD) using parallels.. I was trying to find more info on the forums, but it was difficult to find, so I am sorry if my question has been asked before. Or if anyone else finds the answer on another forum, could you send me the link?
Thank you so much for your time!
Robin

Hi Robin and welcome!
I am using Parallels 5 on a similar setup as yours. Here are the important screen shots in my opinion:
Let P5 optimize and tune to speed up windows
Set video memory to the max and turn off 3d.
Select 1 core and 2 gigs of memory
I think you will enjoy using L4 on P5 until the Mac version is further developed.

Dear John,
Thank you so much! I am loving the mac and loving it more since I can actually run L4 really well on it!
Grateful for your time,
Robin

Hi !!
JohnFidel, do you use antivirus in virtual machine?
I use windows in vm only for work in Logos 4. It´s necessary antivirus?
What do you think about?
Thanks.

No, but I have almost every internet function that may trigger from a windows app use Mac programs. I use an ftp program to access logos and I vpn to the office from the windows side, otherwise both of those would be open in mac as well. One other thing I do is to remove the icons from the task bar and start button for Outlook Express etc. This way I say away from any windows access to the internet except for Logos and other bible software updates.

Thanks for your answer. Great job!! It´s a very important help to me.

Wow... I've spent hours and finally gave up when a logos tech said I had to have 3 GB allocated to Parallels. It simply would not work no matter what I did. This setup works flawlessly. THANKS SO MUCH!

John.
I was not able to set the video memory to the max nor turn off 3D.
What can I Do

These settings need to be set when the Virtual Machine is not running. To do this click on either the option or cmd key when you start Parallels 5. It will bring up the P5 without starting any VM's. Go to Parallels help for more specifics if either of the above do not work. Hope this helps.

John, thanks for your tips. I just upgraded to Logos 4.
I have a MacBook Pro that is almost 3 years old. It is a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo machine.
It is only capable of running 3GB of ram total so I am experimenting with how much ram to allocate. I am wondering if I would not be better to just start over and use Bootcamp to give it the full resources, though Parallels.com says it should work fine.
I also have a 24 inch iMac with 4GB but have not installed Logos there yet. The only Windows machine we own belongs to my son and right now just to be sure I have the backup copy of Logos 3 installed there.
I may rethink that and install Logos 4 also on the iMac.
You also mentioned redirecting all of your browser connections from Logos to the Mac side. Or did I misunderstand that? Can you elaborate?
Thanks,
Johnny

I don't know how detailed to make the procedure, but just in case, here they are in detail:
Open Parallels, Select, but do not start the VM. In the right-click menu click Configure and select the Options tab. Half-way down the list click Internet Applications (John shows the panel in the 7th message above yours.). I have set every option there to "Open in Mac OS X". John has 2 of the options set elsewhere, but that is of necessity as he explains in the post accompanying that message.
Have a wonderful, Christ exalting Christmas.

Has anyone tried these same settings under VMware Fusion 3? Any other tips? Coherence vs. Crystal in P5?
Cordially,

I use Coherence on Parallels 5, but I haven't bothered to learn what Crystal is all about.
Donavon Palmer has some information on optimizing Fusion 3.0 for Logos 4. He should post sometime soon, as he wants to keep his post count well ahead of mine [8-|]
There is information on these Forums concerning optimizing Fusion:
See the last post in this thread Logos 4 (Win XP / VMware Fusion) If anyone has posted since I just checked the thread (11:43 EST 12/25), the referenced post is by Donavon Palmer

Thanks John I'm in the same camp and made some adjustments based on your recommendations.
Good to see you my brother!

Merry Christmas to you too Jack, (and everyone)
I went back after posting that and saw that John had added a screenshot of that page also. I just didn't read carefully enough.
Thanks,

I have one of the new iMac i7 quad core (which actually acts as 8 cores). I also have 8gb of RAM on my machine.
I'm curious what setting you would suggest for my machine? I'm thinking I could bump it up quite a bit from the sittings on you posted.
Any thoughts?
thanks!

Be sure you fasten your seat belt when using that machine [8-|]
Which version of Windows are you using? I thing XP can only recognize a little over 3GB. I have 11GB in my machine, but I only allocated 4 to Parallels because of the limitations of XP.

I spoke to level 2 tech support with Parallels and they said Parallels runs best with 2 gb of ram, and 2 cores at the MAX. In fact if you give it 4 gb of ram it actually runs slower!
I have a quad core i7 with 8 gb of ram. I was giving it 4 cores and 4 gb of ram (since the i7 acts as 8 cores) and it was super slow. The parallel rep said that it has been tested, and if you give it more then 2 gb of ram, or more then 2 cores then it runs really poorly.
Also he said that that 64 bit win 7 runs slower then 32 bit under Parallels. (I'm using Parallels 5 by the way)
Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this matter.

After reading your post, I changed my RAM setting from 4GB to 2, and L4 on XP does seem a bit faster. No bench test, just an impression.

After my previous reply to your post, I thought I would try it again, and this time pay more attention to what happened (still no benchmark test though. I feel that they are not real world, and are only useful for bragging rights)
I have tried two Parallels 5 and XP configurations—2Gb and 4GB RAM. There is hardly any measurable difference in L4 searches. Most of the time it favors the 4GB configuration, but not by much. The overall speed of the application does not seem to be much different. I guess I would say, it does not matter very much.

Windows XP 32-bit has 4 GB address space: about 3.3 GB usable for programs.
Windows XP 64-bit has 128 GB memory limit with some 64 bit device driver availability issues.
Various Windows versions have different memory limits:

Just out of curiosity, what does the processor setting (1 or 2 on my Mac) change and why is the suggestion1? Just trying to understand the process a little bit better.
ETA: I'm running XP on a 2.4GHz dual core MacBook Pro

This is interesting. I chose the 64bit installation. If the 32 is faster, maybe I will add a 32bit VM and see if it is faster.

For what it is worth the Parallels Help file reads
[quote]The number of processors. The Processors field allows you to change the number of virtual CPUs that will be used to handle the processes running in the virtual machine. The maximum allowable number of virtual CPUs is automatically calculated by Parallels Desktop. The calculation is based on the number of physical CPUs available to your Mac OS X computer.
Note: It is reasonable to use more than one CPU in your guest OS if you are going to use applications that perform better under multi-core processors.
Multiple processors divide the workload (if the application or OS is optimized for them). Thus, the more processors, the faster things work. Two will definitely be better than one. More than two in Parallels is debatable.

HI Jack, I have not seen it, but is there a wiki page with the VMWare AND/OR Fusion settings on it?
Donavon posted a page that linked the forum threads about optimizing for Fusion and Parallels. That's all I found.

I was having trouble with L4 in Parallels even after trying the things in this thread. I tried splitting my 3 gb in half (1.5 to Parallels and 1.5 to Mac) It made a definite difference, It runs great.... better than 2 to Parallels and 1 to Mac.
Thought this might help someone.

Your Mac was probably feeling like it was in a strait Jacket with so little room in which to operate. It would probably help greatly if you could add some RAM.

I don't know what machine & OS you have, but adding RAM almost always speeds up operations across applications. What version of Windows are you using? If it is a 32 bit OS, it will use up to 4GB (Actually between 3 & 4). Your Mac will run better with more RAM also.

John and others thank you for the great suggestions. Logos 4 is running better than ever! Hope the Mac version makes things run even more efficiently.

I recently attended a Camp Logos workshop in Las Vegas and purchased the Logos 4 upgrade for PC, hoping to upgrade from version 3 to version 4 on my Mac using Parallels. When I bought the disc I thought it was unusual to have the Windows 4.0 and the Mac 4.0 Alpha version on the same disc, which may be the problem. Only the Mac 4.0 Alpha version will install on my Macs. I am running Parallels 5.0 with Windows XP. Can you help? Thanks

Interesting about Win7 64bit versus 32bit. I am running the 64bit version on my 24" iMac that has 4GB of memory. That is as much as it will take.
I have VMware Fusion as well. I am now going to try Parallels 5 and see what happens. I tried it over the weekend and it was pretty sluggish both on the Windows side and REALLY slow on the Mac side.
I found that it was easier for me to run L4 in a separate space full screened.
I'll let you know how the move from 64bit Win7 to 32bit works for speed.

I've install the L4 Alpha on my Mac side.
Is it possible (and/or recommended) to run logos 4 on my pc side but share my books from my mac side's library. This would save hd space on the pc side. that way the same books wouldn't be in two places? thoughts?

It's not possible to share resources between the various installations.

ok, thanks for the quick response.

I've made my settings identical to Johns and i continue to be stuck
"Downloading Resources" in the setup process. Its had "downloading
resources" and 0% of 2.0 MB for 4 or 5 hours. any thoughts on what is
wrong or what i might be doing wrong? Thanks,

Hi Wes,
This sounds like a Parallels issue in accessing your internet or an issue with a firewall. Since I do not allow my system to access the internet from the windows side I do not use any antivirus software. Can you determine if you can access the internet from the Parallels side? If so, is there any firewall you are using that would require permission for L4 to access the internet? Finally you may need to go to the Parallels forum for advise.

Hello Eveyone!
I am a new Logos 4 user. I have a Mac OS X with 2GB and 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I've downloaded the logos 4 on my Mac but I don't think it's working, I'm not even sure if it's finished indexing. Can I download Logos 4 again with boot camp or will Parallels work?

VM's like Paralells work just fine. In fact, that is the method I would suggest for running the Windows engine on your Mac. That way you can use all of your other Mac apps alongside Logos 4 until the Mac engine is ready.
0 -
So will this mean I would have to buy windows and the VM? and will it be a problem to run the Logos 4 again on windows side?
Thanks Michael!

I would suggest either bumping up the RAM to use parallels or use Boot Camp. I don't think the performance would be acceptable trying to split 2g between OSX and the virtual machine. I have 4g in my machine. I have designated 1.5 to Parallels, and the rest left to OSX. I like to leave Logos open all the time, since I use it at least twice a day. But I have found that sometimes things get to moving really slow. For instance, this weekend I had some updating to do on the web page and with parallels still running, I ended up with Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Photoshop, Entourage, Itunes, and Firefox running at the same time. Although this would normally not be a problem at all, with the virtual machine still loaded, the system slowed to a crawl. Once I managed to shut things down, of course it was back to business as usual. I ordered a 4g chip monday to bring it up a bit. Once it gets here I will sell the pair of 2g and order a second 4g. That is my experience. But mileage may vary.
The flip side is that A14 should arrive today, and if things keep progressing as they have, purchasing parallels and adding memory might not be worth it to you in the long run. Since you are a new user, you may be able to settle with the Alpha while learning the software and not do anything. I think they are adding functionality on a bi-weekly schedule. I have to run the VM for my financial software anyway. But, you may not have any other need for a VM and choose to avoid the expense and hassle.

I am really trying to cut down the expense. So with A14 arriving today will this mean we will have to download new upgrades or something? if so how do we download these upgrades, and how do I know if indexing is complete or not? Please help!!!
Thanks Again!

First of all, I may not be the best source of knowledge on the issue, but I would be glad to help with the assistance of the others here.
Second, when you say you are a new user of Logos 4, what does that mean? What were you using before this? Libronix, Logos for Mac 1, PC versions, or nothing from Logos?
Third, we will see if we can determine where you are now in your process of installation.
Patience will be the key.

I wasn't using anything from Logos, I downloaded the software two days ago and left the computer on all night. The next morning I saw the Logos homepage and didn't see the Logos icon at all, with this I assumed that everything was done including indexing, last night I shutdown the computer and this morning I say the Logos icon that stated that it was still indexing and it would take 2 hours, then 30 min. later it said 44 min. was left, now the icon is no longer there. This is were I am with this whole process, and with me being a new user I don't know what to look for and what to expect at this point or later after it's all done.
