iOS 6.3.1.0505 - Word lookup speed online vs offline

The word lookup feature is working much better in the latest beta. This is a major new feature - thanks for adding it!

My main gripe with it so far in this beta has been that the feature is more enjoyable to use when not connected to the Internet than when connected. When Wifi is entirely disconnected, the popups for original language Bibles are instantaneous, and seem very accurate.

When connected to the Internet, however, the popups apparently try to get all the information from the Internet, even though it is already all available offline. They are thus noticeably slower... not terribly so, but enough to be irritating. I would love it if the lookup were done offline when possible, regardless of whether the device is connected or not, and only went online when the offline info were not available.

I see very little difference either way. It is instantaneous when offline—airplane mode—but when online the delay is less than a second. That could be a slight exaggeration, as I have no way to measure such a short time period [:P] [;)]

In any case—for me—it is lightening fast in either mode. But then, I am from the South (US). Perhaps my eyes are as slow as our speech [:D]

I agree that it's "too slow" when online. This likely has more to do with internet connection speed than anything else, but it takes a full second or more to populate the popup after it appears when online. It would be good to default to offline lookup and only use online for additional info or when nothing is available offline.

Any word on when offline will work with Reverse Interlinears?

Yes I agree with Original Poster. I noticed a speed improvement in the latest beta compared with the previous build (I’m now running .505), but there is a curious lag when online which is not present when offline.

It would be great if the online speed was as fast as the offline. I can’t think of any techcnica reason why this can’t be done?

With a very fast Wifi connection, from the USA, I am seeing 3-5 seconds on the new pop-up lookup when connected to the Internet. Offline is instantaneous, of course. With BDAG as highest prioritized lexicon.

I was seeing the same in Italy. I thought maybe it was just a Europe thing, but I am in the USA for a couple of weeks and the problem has been just as bad. My Wifi connection in Europe is also very good.

Of course, with a bad or spotty Internet connection it is much worse....

I have occasionally seen fast popups on Wifi. It hasn't been the norm, however.

Curious. Are you initiating the lookup from the Greek or from a translation? I see a definite difference between the two. From a Greek or Hebrew text, the lookup online is within a second. From the NKJV the lookup takes 5+ seconds to appear.

Just reporting that this has been done!

    - Add a method to prefer local keylink results before remote results, and use this in word lookups.

    Thanks, Y'all!

Yep, noticing a speed boost on the newest beta. Impressive turnaround on implementing feedback!

THanks for implementing that! Much appreciate the attention to feedback! It seems to work well with original language Bibles. Would love to see it added to reverse-interlinears too!

The only problem I've seen with it is that if an original language Bible is not downloaded, the software still does the lookup online, even if the Lexicon has been downloaded. Is this expected behavior?
