Ability to "tap" for page change while in Scroll View

The way the app is set up now, you have to choose between having Scroll View turned on or off.  If it's on, you can scroll through the text but you can't tap on the margins to turn a full page.  If it's off, you can tap to change full pages but you can't scroll through the text.

Is there a reason it "has" to be this way in the Logos mobile app?  With most apps, you have both options available at the same time and I find not having both to be fairly frustrating on the Logos Mobile app.  I.e. much of the time when reading, I just want to advance an entire screen/page.  But when highlighting text, the text to be highlighted is often split across two screens and the only way I know to do that with a single highlight is to go to settings and turn Scroll View on, then turn it off again for reading.

With scrolling mode disabled you can move up and down in the text using two fingers together.

    Does that help?

Thank you, Graham.  I was quite hopeful for a moment as I wasn't aware of that option.  But when I turned Scroll View off and tried the two-finger scrolling, I found it very jumpy and hard to control the extent of the scroll--not at all smooth like it is when Scroll View is turned on.

So I'm still curious about whether there is a technical reason that a tap in the margin can't execute a page turn while Scroll View is on.

...because there are no pages! Scroll View is one single, long page. There is no other page to swipe to!

Actually, on the Android app for well over a year the app worked exactly as Rick is asking. You could scroll with one finger on the scroll-view, exactly as today, but if you tapped on the right or left side, it would advance (or go back) one page, extremely quickly as well. It was fantastic, and I used it exactly as Rick is hoping to.

Unfortunately (in my opinion) this feature was eventually removed by Faithlife. The iOS app never had this feature.

After submitting my response to Graham above I realized I actually misspoke when I said I wasn't aware of the two-finger option.  Trying it actually jogged my memory and I recalled I "had" known about it in the past and tried it, but just as now, I found the two-finger scrolling response/results so unusable that I quit using it.  But as Fr Devin noted, there was a time when both smooth scrolling and page/screen changing did work and they worked well.

Faithlife, did something change in either the Android OS or the Bible app itself that has made it impossible (or just too difficult) to address this issue?  [:^)]

    Sorry Rick... not faithlife

On my iPhone (with scrolling disabled) the two finger scroll is certainly not as smooth as with scrolling enabled but it is by no means unusable.

On my iPad the two finger scroll is no worse than the iPhone even with two columns on the page.

I wonder if your device is atypical as there does not seem to have been a surge in 'me too' posts?

Hi Mike!  Glad you find it usable on your iDevices.  I've used two Kindle Fire devices (a few generations apart) and have had the same issue with both.  So while I suppose it's possible it's an issue with Kindle devices in general, I don't think it's necessarily my "copies" of the devices.

That's why I'd like to hear something from Faithlife:

    1. To better understand exactly what the issue is regarding the jerky two-fingered scrolling on the Kindles when in Scroll View.
    2. To better understand if there's a reason Faithlife can't implement a tap feature for page/screen turns while in Scroll View.

Well I guess that the response wasn't completely wasted as we have now narrowed the problem a little and gone from a general Mobile App problem to a problem with the App when run on Kindle Fire OS and the Kindle platform.

I recall other people having problems but don't know if they were all using Kindles.  If so, that might help in narrowing the problem down.

FAITHLIFE … would you please comment regarding the jumpy, difficult-to-control two-finger scrolling when "not" in Scroll-View?  I.e. I've had (still have) the issue on two Fire devices--an 8.9" purchased in 2014 and an 8" purchased this year.  When in Scroll-View, both one-finger and two-finger scrolling are smooth as silk.  But when Scroll-View is not checked, the two-finger scrolling is so jumpy and difficult to control as to not be usable.

Is this only an issue on Kindle Fire devices?  On other Android devices, is two-finger scrolling smooth when not in Scroll-View?

I can answer the “jerkiness” question. The two finger scroll moves a line at a time, rather than a pixel at a time. One of the reasons for doing so is that the pages view supports columns and footnotes, neither of which work effectively with infinite, smooth scrolling. So the two-finger scroll is not so much a scroll as an ‘advance the page by one line’. It’s ‘jerky’ by design.

That doesn’t explain why you can’t page-turn in scrolling view. That’s a separate issue that I don’t know the answer to.

Thanks, Mark!  Does the two-finger scroll move a line at a time (rather than a pixel at a time) only when not in Scroll View?  I ask because it's buttery smooth when in scroll view, same as one-finger scrolling.
But either way, if it does move one "line" at a time when not in scroll view, shouldn't it only "jump" one line at a time?  For me, it jumps far more than a single line at a time.  Worse yet, it doesn't seem consistent in how far it jumps no matter how slowly I try to scroll.  Once I move away from a place in the text , I have a very difficult time getting back to it because the scrolling movement/distance is so erratic.
I'd really like to find out from Faithlife if this issue is unique to Kindle Fire devices or if other Android devices are affected as well.  And yes, I would still like to know why we can't page-turn when in Scroll View.  (Please, Faithlife!)  [:)]

There are too many double negatives in that question... I think I understand what you are asking.

    • When in scroll mode, it scrolls at a pixel a time (buttery smooth).
    • When in page mode, it two finger scrolls one line at a time (not as "smooth," but still in control).

I have a very difficult time getting back to it because the scrolling movement/distance is so erratic.

That does not describe what I see. Out of curiosity... you dont have two resources showing at once, with a link set, do you? I have seen that behavior under those conditions.

this issue is unique to Kindle Fire devices or if other Android devices are affected as well.

I am essentially an "iOS only" user, although I have had $35 Kindle Fires before. My experience with Kindle Fire devices was less than ideal... I can't tell you if it is related to those devices OR Android in general... However, it would be important to know which specific device you are using.

I'd really like to find out from Faithlife

There isn't a two-finger scroll in scroll view. (Two-finger scrolling works, but in that view it performs exactly the same operation as one-finger scrolling.)

I don't experience this on iOS unless I have inline footnotes turned on. As footnotes appear or disappear from the screen, the text can jump about a bit. I don't think that's avoidable. But if you experience this with footnotes turned off, then perhaps that's an Android bug. Maybe someone else with an Android device can comment. (Like alabama24, I stopped using my Kindle Fire because it was simply too slow.)

I have an iOS and Android. On iOS, two finger scrolling works well enough. On Android, even on a high performance device  it is a total disaster. Instead of scrolling on pixel  at a time, or even one line, it scrolls in an entirely erratic fashion, something along the lines of one page at a time, so that you completely lose your place.

Thank you, JT.  I did have a second tab open in addition to the main resource I'm reading and it wasn't linked, but just for chuckles I closed the second tab and still have the erratic scrolling, so sadly, that's not the cause.  [:(]

Thank you again, Mark.  I checked the footnotes setting but that option is off (and greyed out).

Speed has never been an issue for me on my Kindle Fire devices because all I use them for is reading my Logos resources, highlighting, and adding occasional notes.  In fact, I often only have one tab open, and very rarely do I have occasion to have more than two tabs open.  I always use my laptop when doing any kind of a study.

I have a good-performing Galaxy A5 (2017) and the two finger scroll is erratic. But scrolling a version 5.16 Vyrso app on the same device is predictable; one line at a time! The one finger scroll on both apps is smooth.

The Vyrso app (or I guess I should call it by it's new name, the "Faithlife Ebooks" app) was another dead-end for me.

According to the Faithlife Web site, the app WILL work on the Kindle Fire and there is a link there for it on the web site which took me to Amazon's web site for the app.  But once there, Amazon's web site for the app says it is NOT compatible with either my old 8.9" or my new 8" inch device.  I thought maybe it was a documentation glitch so I tried installing it anyway, but it wouldn't install.  Really?  It won't install on either an old device OR a new one?  Why provide a link for it on the Faithlife Ebooks web site?  [:S][:S][:S]   Very frustrating.

The Faithlife web site with the link for the Kindle Fire download is https://ebooks.faithlife.com/download

More confirmation that it's a general Android problem, not a Kindle Fire problem.  I downloaded both the Bible app and the Faithlife Ebook app to my Android LG ThinQ G7 phone and both apps display the same two-finger scrolling problem that's been discussed above.

I keep the old Vyrso app because of various issues with the new v6 apps (I have the Bible app) e.g. scrolling, searching. It's my baseline for knowing where v6 has failed; despite its useful new features. I didn't intend that you should try to install it!

It's certainly no fault of yours that it wouldn't install, Dave.  I apologize if my post gave the impression I was suggesting that.  It's a Faithlife issue all the way.

The truth is I'm glad you mentioned Vyrso because I never even think about that app seeing as how the Faithlife ebooks can be read in both Logos and the Bible app.  The fact is, even though the Faithlife Ebook app wouldn't install on the Kindle Fires (contrary to Faithlife's web site), it installed fine on my Android phone, so being able to try both it and the Bible app on my phone and having the same scrolling problem there with both apps, just confirmed for me that the two-finger scrolling problem is an issue with the apps, not a problem with my Kindle devices.

    HI Rick,

I'm sorry you've had a frustrating experience with this. It seems like the ultimate solution here is to allow highlighting across multiple pages while in paging mode. That's something that's on our roadmap.

The two-fingered scrolling feature is something that we might move away from, since it's not really discoverable and isn't a common mobile convention in e-readers.

You mentioned that you like other apps that allow you to page while in a scrolling view. Which apps do you think do a good job of that?

Thanks for sharing, and I hope we can move towards a solution that works for you.
