ESV Study Bible Reading Plan, need help!

Hi there

I would like to follow the ESV SB plan with my discipleship group but I am having some issues making it work as a custom reading plan in L4.

The semicolons don't seem to function the same as in L3 (where it would define a reading and not subdivide that reading).

When I enter a long string of readings from the same book separated by semicolons they do not show up as individual readings but as ranges (i.e. Ps 1:1-2; Ps 1:2-3; Ps 2; Ps3; ---> Ps 1-3).L4 then divides this range into odd readings.

In L4 is there a  work around? Specifically I need a way to restrict a days reading to a specific chapter or set of verses.

I am not keen on editing the XML as I would like this reading plan on an ipod touch (which I won't jail-break).

Thanks in advance!

Daniel

    Daniel,

I was contemplating the same thing this week.  I think in this case due to the shortcoming you noted, that it might be one for the Logos techs to actually write and put into the program as an option.

Hmm Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

Yes, I think it is no way to do it the way we do for example the Chronological Reading. The ESV SB plan is excellent and I used it last year with many people in our church. It would be great Logos would do it the way M'Cheyne is done now in Beta.

EDIT: when they publish the ESV Study Bible (hopefully we will see it soon), they should have the rights to publish also the ESV SB Reading Plan.

I'm with you Dan. Our church is reading using that plan, and I am preaching and reading from the plan a couple of times a week. It's been awesome, but I'd love to have the plan on Logos 4. I've created 10 mini-series though the year that tie the OT, PS, and NT readings together.  We call it 365revolutions, and our site is called http://365revolutions.org  I just hope they come out with the update before our year is up!

    Welcome [:D]

Logos User Voice suggestion is currently ranked # 32 => More control over Reading Plans with 97 votes.

Logos 4.3 SR-3 still lacks some Reading Plan controls.

    Wiki => http://wiki.logos.com/Reading_Plans#Daily_Reading_from_ESV_Study_Bible_Notes

has approximation for ESV Study Bible reading plan:

Ecc 3:1-8, Ps-So, Ps, Ps 90 | Gen-2 Kin, Job | 1 Chr-Est, Isa, Oba, Joel, Jon, Hos, Amos, Mic, Nah, Zeph, Jer, Lam, Hab, Dan, Eze, Hag, Zech, Mal, Isa | Luke, Acts-Philemon, Mat, Heb, Mark, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, Luke, Rom, Jam, John, 1 John-Rev

that can be abbreviated bit more (for copy and paste into reading plan passage):

    Ec 3:1-8,Ps-So,Ps,Ps 90|Ge-2K,Jb|1Ch-Es,Is,Ob,Jl,Jnh,Ho,Am,Mic,Na,Zp,Jr,La,Hab,Dn,Ezk,Hg,Zc,Ml,Is|Lk,Ac-Phm,Mt,Heb,Mk,1Pe,2Pe,Lk,Rm,Jm,Jn,1Jn-Re

Yes, it was just added a few days ago.  Go to the Documents -> Reading Plans -> ESV Study Bible Reading Plan (near the end of the list).

Thank You, yes, Keep Smiling 4 Jesus [:D], these links proved very helpful to me!  [:D][:D][:D]

Hopefully, this will help others, as well!!! [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]
I'm not sure what all the controls on Logos 7 are, for I still run Logos 5.2.2., and was still able to get everything going very well.
I have struggled with reading plans for a while now, and have run dozens of searches for them through the years.  I generally liked F. LeGard Smith's Narrated Bible Chronological readings (hardcopy), but didn't like the absence of study notes, nor a few other things about that setup.  Years have turned into decades, literally, and the closest I had found was a Navigator's "Book-at-a-time Bible Reading Plan," which was semi-chronological, but the flip in my bible and check-off on a separate sheet and where I really wasn't on a schedule...  well, this meant I really wasn't on a schedule! And besides, from the get-go, it wasn't exactly the format I wanted, nor did it even have the correct diet of the NT (see below), and so it never quite excited the imagination.

Additionally, I share the belief with others that "read the bible in a year" could be entirely the wrong emphasis - especially with pride being so subtle, those disciples reading these plans often let it slip to friends that it is happening, and also, so many of these plans keep a believer in the OT for three quarters of the year!  This is entirely the wrong diet for a New Covenant worshipper!

I had heard a better ratio to be 4 passes through the NT for every one pass of the OT (especially since the OT is about 3 times the length of the NT). At the same time, Psalms and Proverbs have proven helpful on a continual basis, so they can receive extra emphasis.

So, for the next three years my plan will daily look like a conglomeration of the OT and NT chronologies on the pages you link to (above), with daily readings in Psalms and in Proverbs.   In fact, what is there designated as the "ESV Study Bible OT chronology includes Psalms, and then I've got it set to go another 6 passes through Psalms, and 6 passes through Proverbs (or twice a year on each).  The four NT Chronologies alternate back and forth between one designated as from esv.org and one there designated as Morris Proctor's.

I'm still considering three books the ESV Study Bible Reading Plan repeats perhaps for the next go around or revision--Isaiah, Luke, and Romans.

Nevertheless, I'm really stoked (excited, encouraged) about this.  It seems to be working very well. and it seems like a great time (here at the beginning of 2017) to let others have a go at it, as well. Really love that it actually is chronological (but not too terribly piecemeal), that it takes the reader through the OT and NT chronologies simultaneously, that it has the daily readings in Psalms and Proverbs, that it works on both my desktop and smartphone to take me exactly where I need to be--and that I have my study bible and/or commentary notes (& maps & dictionaries) there any time I want some insight on a passage!
Again, I suggest this as a three year plan.

I call it the "3 Year Chronological Mixed Bible Reading Plan--Beta v.1.0"

To summarize, the four daily readings are (in order):
    Psalms | OT-Chronology | Proverbs | NT-Chronology

or, to be more profuse, the reading plan is set up with these ratios:
    {New Year Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 + 6 Passes thru Psalms} |
{an ESV study bible chronology of the OT w/Psalms worked in one more time} |
    {6 Passes thru Proverbs} |
    {4 NT Chronologies as follows:NT-esv, NT-proctor, NT-esv, NT-proctor}

Set the date to end in about three years (or set to about 156 weeks)

Next, this is to be copied and pasted into the "All Passages"->"New Reference Range" area of the custom reading plan:

    Ecc 3:1-8, Ps, Ps, Ps, Ps, Ps, Ps | Gen-Ruth, 1 Sam 1-20, Ps 11, Ps 59, 1 Sam 21-24, Ps 7, Ps 27, Ps 31, Ps 34, Ps 52, Ps 56, Ps 120, Ps 140-142, 1 Sam 25-27, Ps 17, Ps 35, Ps 54, Ps 63, 1 Sam 28-31, Ps 18, Ps 121, Ps 123-125, Ps 128-130, 2 Sam 1-4, Ps 6, Ps 8-10, Ps 14, Ps 16, Ps 19, 21, 1 Chr 1-2, Ps 43-45, Ps 49, Ps 84-85, Ps 87, 1 Chr 3-5, Ps 73, Ps 77-78, 1 Chr 6, Ps 81, Ps 88, Ps 92-93, 1 Chr 7-10, Ps 102-104, 2 Sam 5:1-10, 1 Chr 11-12, Ps 133, Ps 106-107, 2 Sam 5:11-6:23, 1 Chr 13-16, Ps 1-2, Ps 15, Ps 22-24, Ps 47, Ps 68, Ps 89, Ps 96, Ps 100, Ps 101, Ps 105, 132, 2 Sam 7, 1 Chr 17, Ps 25, Ps 29, Ps 33, Ps 36, Ps 39, 2 Sam 8-9, 1 Chr 18, Ps 50, Ps 53, Ps 60, Ps 75, 2 Sam 10, 1 Chr 19, Ps 20, Ps 65-67, Ps 69-70, 2 Sam 11-12, 1 Chr 20, Ps 32, Ps 51, Ps 86, Ps 122, 2 Sam 13-15, Ps 3-4, Ps 12-13, Ps 28, Ps 55, 2 Sam 16-18, Ps 26, Ps 40, Ps 58, Ps 61-62, Ps 64, 2 Sam 19-21, Ps 5, Ps 38, Ps 41-42, 2 Sam 22-23, Ps 57, Ps 95, Ps 97-99, 2 Sam 24, 1 Chr 21-22, Ps 30, Ps 108-110, 1 Chr 23-25, Ps 131, Ps 138-139, Ps 143-145, 1 Chr 26-29, Ps 127, Ps 111-118, 1 Kgs 1-2, Ps 37, Ps 71, Ps 94, Ps 119:1-88, 1 Kgs 3-4, 2 Chr 1, Ps 72, Ps 119:89-176, Song 1-8, Prov, 1 Kgs 5-6, 2 Chr 2-3, 1 Kgs 7, 2 Chr 4, 1 Kgs 8, 2 Chr 5, 2 Chr 6-7, Ps 136, Ps 134, Ps 146-150, 1 Kgs 9, 2 Chr 8, Prov 25-29, Eccl, 1 Kgs 10-11, 2 Chr 9, Prov 30-31, 1 Kgs 12-14, 2 Chr 10-12, 1 Kgs 15:1-24, 2 Chr 13- 16, 1 Kgs 15:25-16:34, 2 Chr 17, 1 Kgs 17-22, 2 Chron 18-23, Obad 1, Ps 82-83, 2 Kgs 1-13, 2 Chron 24, 2 Kgs 14, 2 Chr 25, Jonah 1-4, 2 Kgs 15, 2 Chr 26, Isa 1-8, Amos 1-9, 2 Chr 27, Isa 9-12, Mic 1-7, 2 Chr 28, 2 Kgs 16-17, isa 13-27, 2 Kgs 18:1-8, 2 Chr 29-31, Ps 48, Hosea, Isa 28-39, Ps 76, Isa 40-48, 2 Kgs 18:9-19:37, Ps 46, Ps 80, Ps 135, Isa 49-66, 2 Kgs 20-21, 2 Chr 32-33, Nahum 1-3, 2 Kgs 22- 23, 2 Chr 34-35, Zeph 1-3, Jer 1-40, Ps 74, Ps 79, 2 Kgs 24-25, 2 Chr 36, Hab 1-3, Jer 41-52, Lam 1-5, Ezek, Joel, Dan, Ezra 1-6, Ps 137, Haggai , Zech, Esther, Ezra 7-10, Neh , Ps 126, Mal | Pr, Pr, Pr, Pr, Pr, Pr | Luke 1, John 1:1-14, Matt 1, Luke 2:1-38, Matt 2, Luke 2:39-52, Matt 3, Mark 1, Luke 3, Matt 4, Luke 4-5, John 1:15-51, John 2-4, Mark 2, John 5, Matt 12:1-21, Mark 3, Luke 6, Matt 5-7, Matt 8:1-13, Luke 7, Matt 11, Matt 12:22-50, Luke 11, Matt 13, Luke 8, Matt 8:14- 34, Mark 4-5, Matt 9-10, Matt 14, Mark 6, Luke 9:1-17, John 6, Matt 15, Mark 7, Matt 16, Mark 8, Luke 9:18-27, Matt 17, Mark 9, Luke 9:28-62, Matt 18, John 7-8, John 9:1-10:21, Luke 10-11, John 10:22-42, Luke 12-13, Luke 14-15, Luke 16-17:10, John 11, Luke 17:11-18:14, Matt 19, Mark 10, Matt 20-21, Luke 18:15-19:48, Mark 11, John 12, Matt 22, Mark 12, Matt 23, Luke 20-21, Mark 13, Matt 24-26, Mark 14, Luke 22, John 13-17, Matt 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John 18-19, Matt 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20-21, Acts 1-14, Jas, Acts 15-16, Gal, Acts 17-18:18, 1 Thes 1-5, 2 Thes 1-3, Acts 18:19-19:41, 1 Cor, 2 Cor, Acts 20:1 -3, Rom, Acts 20:4-28, Col 1-4, Phm, Eph, Php, 1 Tim, Titus, 1 Pet, Heb, 2 Tim, 2 Pet, Jude, 1 Jn, 2 Jn, 3 Jn, Rev, Luke 1; Thank you for tying this 2011 thread to the 2017 thread.

I'd seen parts of that topic in my searches, and it is all highly relevant to this thread.

In the above Beta 1.0, have already run into one snag when copying and pasting these works of other giants, but alas, as I've looked back on those reading plans, I cannot find where any of those giants left only "Acts 20:4-28" and so I must have excised the ending of the full expression "Acts 20-4-28:31" not realizing what I was doing, for this did not properly alert Logos that it was in fact speaking of reading through CHAPTER 28 instead of stopping at verse 28 of that same chapter!!!.  Thus, we'll run this again with the two erring references fixed.  Other than that, have made really good progress and the rest of this is working well. This will be:

"3 Year Chronological Mixed Bible Reading Plan--Beta v.2.0"

Also, I will note that it worked out to three years worth of manageable daily readings when set to 5 per week, and it is easy to get ahead on this plan  The Logos Reading Plan applet does an amazing job of breaking these up into manageable segments, giving heed to chapter breaks and if one section is particularly long for a day, it adjusts other readings each day accordingly.

As said, this plan seems to run extremely well--so far it has only needed this one adjustment, and if I back-date my computer and/or attempt to edit it over the previous plan already beginning Jan 1...  It has been inspired by things I've heard over the years about the reading ratios of others between the NT and OT, and I encourage others to try it and provide feedback.  Thank you!

As said, this plan seems to run extremely well--so far it has only needed this one adjustment,

Today I found two more adjustments needed. I accept the blame for the previous fix, but this one traces back to the sources:

I am unable to edit/revise/fix these or discuss them other than here, and I don't know how to message these individuals or discuss the needed changes at those pages, so someone else please assist with that.  Here is what needs to be addressed:

As much as I appreciate all that Morris Proctor does, the "Chronological Reading Plan by Morris Proctor" that is posted in the above two places is missing John 11 and Luke 17:1-10(!)  I'm not sure what was intended, but if I use the same section from the ESV Chronological Bible Reading Plan, I can take it from there.  As detailed above, in my reading plan the 2nd and 4th times I go through the NT on this plan I am using Morris Proctor's chronology, but will be from here on using a revised version.

In general, where the Morris Proctor plan reads; "John 10:22-42; Luke 12-16; Luke 17:11-37; Luke 18:1-14"
It could be replaced with this string from the ESV plan (slightly revised): "John 10:22-42, Luke 12-17:10, John 11, Luke 17:11-18:14"

I won't paste the whole reading plan again this time showing these revisions--this post is getting a little long at the moment.  Perhaps with the next revision we can justify posting the whole reading plan again :-)

They are now edited and fixed at the two sources.  Didn't see a place to discuss them or give comments on the edits, nor did I find the way to discuss them with the author, but he'll be glad they're fixed, I feel confident of that :-)

Anyone still playing with creating a custom Bible reading plan with specific passages for each day. I'm trying to follow someone's published reading plan that others near me are using. I put this in a custom reading plan and the smart Logos re-levels the daily lengths. Commas and semicolons down work. Is there a way to do this in the Reading Plan dialog?

    e.g. Passages for 31 days

    Pr 29:12-13, Pr 29:14, Pr 29:15, Pr 29:16, Pr 29:17, Pr 29:18, Pr 29:19, Pr 29:20, Pr 29:21, Pr 29:22, Pr 29:23, Pr 29:24, Pr 29:25, Pr 29:26, Pr 29:27, Pr 30:1-4, Pr 30:5, Pr 30:6-9, Pr 30:10, Pr 30:11-14, Pr 30:15, Pr 30:16, Pr 30:17, Pr 30:18-19, Pr 30:20, Pr 30:21-23, Pr 30:24-28, Pr 30:29-31, Pr 30:32-33, Pr 31:1-9, Pr 31:10-31

    Thanks.

Greg, I think I understand your question, but not to leave you hanging, I've not seen a way to custom-set the daily lengths, have only played with my own very long 2-3 year plan.  Nevertheless, I'm still using an outdated version of both Windows and Logos, so there may be a way, but I happily depend upon "smart Logos" to set the daily lengths, since it does such a good job of getting them in bite-sized chunks.

Nevertheless, in my own Beta above, I must announce another change--and I see this one is correct on Morris Proctor's page, but I got mine from the "Chronological Order from ESV Study Bible Notes", and have corrected it at its source to match both Morris Proctor's and "A Chronological reading of the bible".  Previously it had readers going through the whole book of Proverbs as part of the chronology of the lives of David and Solomon, then having them repeat Proverbs 25-29 maybe three weeks later, and then Proverbs 30-31 again another three weeks after that (of course, I have other daily readings of Proverbs during this same time in my plan, which already provides sufficient repeats and overlaps).

    Here's the erring string:

    Song 1-8, Prov, 1 Kgs 5-6, 2 Chr 2-3, 1 Kgs 7, 2 Chr 4, 1 Kgs 8, 2 Chr 5, 2 Chr 6-7, Ps 136, Ps 134, Ps 146-150, 1 Kgs 9, 2 Chr 8, Prov 25-29, Eccl, 1 Kgs 10‐11, 2 Chr 9, Prov 30‐31, [emphasis added]

Here is the fix (this is not an actual quote, per se, but will be in the future [;)] ):

    Song 1-8, Prov 1-24, 1 Kgs 5-6, 2 Chr 2-3, 1 Kgs 7, 2 Chr 4, 1 Kgs 8, 2 Chr 5, 2 Chr 6-7, Ps 136, Ps 134, Ps 146-150, 1 Kgs 9, 2 Chr 8, Prov 25-29, Eccl, 1 Kgs 10‐11, 2 Chr 9, Prov 30‐31,  [emphasis added]

    Thank you!

Later in the day (and too late to fix in the edits above), I found the original source of the "Chronological Order from ESV Study Bible Notes," and it also has the reader stopping at Proverbs 24 to pick up later with the last two sections.  I will note it is NOT the Reading Plan found in my 2008 ESV Study Bible (with a 2011 ESV Text version), nor is there a reading plan on my Logos software version of the ESV Study Bible Notes.  The version I did find that matches it was at www.esv.org. On the right half of the split screen, there are three tabs; one for the library (left) one for notes (middle), and on the right one for reading plans.  Under Reading Plans, the second one on the list is "Chronological," and that plan was clearly devised from this plan (with the exception of the error).

The version I did find that matches it was at www.esv.org. On the right half of the split screen...

First off, I should mention, ^^ that plan is no longer at that site. I sent them a brief question, wanting to see it, and the next business day got this reply:  "Hello, Thank you for contacting us. We had to remove this plan for editorial reasons which is why you are unable to find it. We apologize for the inconvenience. Have a blessed day! In Christ..."

That being that, the problem I'd needed to track down was that the Book of Job was completely MISSING in that plan, and thus all my previous beta versions.  It had been discussed (and still left unresolved 8 years ago) in this forum; https://community.logos.com/forums/t/24784.aspx, and I'd missed it--and it messed up a few other people, some finding out at the end of the year.  I guess I caught it right past the 3/4 mark (like they did), still with time to catch up and also fix the problem.  Where to put it? Before Genesis? Between Genesis 3 and 4? Between Genesis 11 and 12? Many plans do all of the above. Without getting into a technical discussion about obscure Hebrew words, authorship, and the dating of the book, F. LaGard Smith, compiler of "The Narrated Bible," sees it as compatible with the challenges those of the Dispersion would face, and he places it after the Fall of Jerusalem and the Dispersion and before the Book of Daniel.  We might add that if they were, in fact, looking back to an example from the period of the Patriarchs, considering the ancient paths as they should (Jer 6:16), then so be it.  Further, at the end of my ESV Study Bible hardcopy is a daily reading plan broken into four parts, and the Book of Job follows the Dispersion, so as the plan is entitled, "Chronological Order from ESV Study Bible Notes," that is where Job has been placed.
Didn't plan to dominate the conversation on this page and have withheld the last several iterations of my own plan, and while hammering this out, I nearly hasten to share this after discovering more review is needed--but I know it is in better shape now than it ever was in the past.  After fixing the Job problem, I also formally parted from the above Chronological Order from ESV Study Bible Notes because I tripped across a several other problems:

Isaiah 36, Sennacharib's invasion of Judah corresponds with 2Ki 18 and 2Chr 32, yet the three are separated by about 26 days in my above versions 1 - 4, when run as a 2yr plan. By breaking readings of those books into smaller chunks, which are all covered in either a chapter or two in each account, the Assyrian threat, God's deliverance, and the extension of Hezekiah's life in all three accounts fit nicely together in the reading program within 3 days of each other.  Preceding and following accounts also correspond well.  One could surmise that while this plan is not overly piecemeal, an oversight such as this indicates there are other parallel passages needing attention.
Chronologically, "the events recorded in Numbers 1–6 were preceded by those described in 7:1–9:15"  -Wiersbe, W. W. (1999). Be counted. Colorado Springs, CO: Chariot Victor Pub. p.10 digital version.  This is yet another indication that multiple other matters of chronology are there to be ironed out.  This one is fairly minor, and while I agree to avoid breaking up chapters piecemeal, where whole chapters are involved, it is preferable to get the chronological chunks in order.
Many Psalms that are clearly Exhilic are placed in strange places in the above-mentioned chronology, so those identified by F. LaGard Smith, after review, have been moved to more appropriate spots--but I learned to be careful. One of his, Ps 89 was exhilic in a sense, ascribed to "Ethan the Ezrahite." But to be clear, this was not in the time of Ezra (and Smith never actually claimed he was).  In 1Ki 4:31, Solomon was compared in wisdom to "Ethan the Ezrahite," and thus Ps 89 fit with the exile David and company went into during Absalom's rebellion. It could have been meaningful to the Jews of the Dispersion, sure.  It has floated around all kinds of places in various Chronological reading plans. These problems revealed that too little care and effort went into the placement of all of the Psalms above.  Ps 12-13 were removed from Absalom's rebellion and placed when David fled from Saul, after Samuel's death and when he lived in a cave. Several other Psalms were moved into more appropriate places (7, 34, 52, 56, etc.) and then the proclivity of the problem proved the need to review the placement of EVERY Psalm in the Chronology (at this moment, I do not even know if all 150 are even placed in the plan).
Overall, New Testament Chronology hasn't been much of an issue so far (aside from a mistake this editor made with programming the plan in Acts early on).  Perhaps these had more attention given to them up-front.  At present, I'm still running two different NT Chronologies, and if I start adjusting or preferring one, I may select between the two.

Thus, with assurance it is even better than the "good" plans above (and that it is on target to become even better), this is a plan which works well as an 18 month to a 3 year plan, depending on the length of the daily readings desired.  It takes a reader through this daily format: Psalms | Chronological OT (w/Psalms interspersed) | Proverbs | Chronological NT.  As it is set up here, it goes through Psalms 6 times for that portion, perhaps fully one more pass through Psalms along with the OT Chronological Readings, through Proverbs 6 times, and Chronologically through the NT four times.
Seeking an alternative to presumptuously [;)] posting the whole thing here, as I have done in the past, I thought maybe I'd found a suitable alternative in sharing it at documents.logos.com/documents, but you would have to join a special group to see the daily reading assignments, and then it wouldn't give you the neat code to throw it into your own applet and get your own setup.  While it is a little more advanced and ironed than the one I'm working on now (give me a break, I already had to check off 18 mos of readings TWICE in the last 10 days while getting a new plan up and running for myself after that Book of Job and other debacles), I did just run it through Logos Reading Plans applet and spot-checked several dates to make sure its coding is working.  Here is...

The version I did find that matches it was at www.esv.org. On the right half of the split screen...

So it matches the one at www.esv.org, huh?

    And thus this thread comes full circle.  Here is a quote from the Original Post (above) as he was looking for a way to use a reading plan there for Logos;

If I was writing about the same link at the site www.esv.org as in the Original Post, http://www.esv.org/assets/pdfs/rp.esv.study.bible.pdf, well that one is working today at it does now seem to functionally match the plan in my hardcopy edition of the ESV Study Bible (2008 notes and 2011 ESV Text)--although the visual arrangement is different.  It looks like it's settled then {with a well-intentioned jab or two at myself}!  This can become very confusing, though, if there was more than one plan at that site.

Anyway, there are bigger fish to fry, and for the record...

My own work on the Chronologies resumes with this thread:

Thank you, and many blessings to those diligently seeking God through the Scriptures!
