Saving resources on an USB Thumb Drive

Is it possible to install the Logos software on the local C drive and store the resources on an USB Thumb Drive. The thumb drive will be permanently plugged into the laptop. Or as plan B, is it possible to store both the software and the resources on the Thumb Drive.

It may be technically possible but it is neither recommended nor supported.
The performance implications would be significant and I would avoid it.
Any particular reason you are wanting to do this? Is it, for example, a lack of space on the C drive?

I got my wife a new computer with 64GB of Hard Drive storage and although it does have the ability to install a larger SSD drive as a temporary solution I wanted to know if it was possible to store it on a Thumb Drive. My Resources alone are over 30GB of data and even if I went with a light install it would be 12GB which would only leave her with 20 GB of hard drive space. Which in reality may still work for her since all her files are stored on OneDrive and not locally the computer. I am just trying to find the best and fastest option to expand her storage space.

What sort of hard drive is it?
20GB is very tight. If you can go with a larger SSD drive I would recommend it

As Graham said, it would have a substantial effect on Logos (which already runs fairly slow with a 30GB library). If it's a modern computer with USB C or a Thunderbolt connector you can use that to connect an external SSD to the computer and that would remove a good portion of the bottleneck. However, even the best flash with USB 3.0 will suffer a performance loss - so if those connectors are not an option I would recommend installing an additional SSD.
Also, to clarify, you would need to install Logos on the external drive. As far as I know you can't point Logos to a specific location to find resources (although I've been wanting this feature for a long time now).

Josh - it Is possible, albeit unsupported, to move just resources to a separate folder. See https://wiki.logos.com/Install_in_different_folder_or_drive#Relocate_your_folder_with_Resources.2c_Indexes.2c_.2e.2e.2e for details

Her best bet is probably to use the web app exclusively on that computer.

I beg to differ (since Cloud Resources). I'm a Mac guy but have to run Windows because of ParaText (translation software). Paratext and the Windows version of Logos can be in a linkset together which is really nice (if only they would make that work across the OS barrier!). Because of that, I have a Windows virtual machine where I have a Windows version of Logos in addition to my other Windows-only software. I don't have a huge SSD and therefore only assigned 60GB to the VM. I simply downloaded my core resources in the Windows install. It actually works quite nicely.
I'd recommend installing with the "minimal" library and then even trimming that down to the resources she'll want local (search results do have hit's in the remaining resources provided you're online, so individual resources can be downloaded as needed). I know this isn't ideal and would advise a bigger drive, but I would still prefer working with a limited resource set on the desktop software rather than being reliant on the web app alone.

My advice is based upon his determination that 12 GB would be required with the "necessities." To be honest, 64 GB isn't really enough to do anything with except browse the web.

Technically, you appear to be in violation of the Terms of use - see sections 1 and 5. There is a lot of legal weight in the wording, but the intent hasn't changed substantially from the 'relaxed' phrasing of many years ago. If it is your wife's computer, she needs her own Logos account and resources.

On what basis? A husband & wife are considered "one user" according to Bob, unless the spouse is in vocational ministry. Is that the case here?

Faithlife Terms (Mar 2019) super-ceded Bob Pritchett’s gracious Logos Single user guide (Jul 2009)
Years after Bob's license guidance came the free Basic packages.
Faithlife group => https://faithlife.com/homeschool-families/activity includes a recent reply:
Phil Gons (Faithlife)">
Student pricing for K–12 is a good idea that we should explore. We're currently working on a Christian Home base package lineup, which will be a group-licensed product, meaning that every member of your family will receive their own copy (as licensed through your family's Faithlife group). We may have something available in a couple of months.
Anticipating Faithlife Terms for Logos Bible Software (LBS) will need modification for Christian Home group-licensing.

On the basis of section 5 specifically.

Terms of Use, Section 5 said:
LBS Licenses may ONLY be used on devices owned by the licensee in whose name the LBS License is registered. Each LBS License is granted for use by one human user only, even where the LBS License is registered in the name of an institution such as a church. We reserve the right to monitor use of the Services subject to LBS Licenses to detect, prevent and disable excessive simultaneous logins on different devices indicating use of the Services by more than one human user. We do not offer site-licenses, shared licenses, co-op licenses, or library licenses.
"With my body I honour you, all that I am I give to you and all that I have I share with you... expect my Logos Library as per section 5 of the Logos Bible Software terms of use."
--- three weeks later ---
"Where did you guys go on Honeymoon?"
"Oh, we didn't. I decided to invest the money in a Logos Base package so my wife could use the exact same resources which I already own..."
Carpe verbum.

You will have to be more explicit. If "one user" for the software can include a husband & wife, then "one user" can include the "one user's wife's computer."

Bottom line: Faithlife has to have terms and conditions, but they are not going after a husband and wife utilizing the same account. It is better to have a more strict statement, and then relax in practice than to have a less strict statement and then attempt to crack down.
To answer the original question, I would just get a Samsung SSD and replace the HD in the computer altogether. They are relatively cheap up to 250-500GB, and their migration software makes it a simple process to clone the original drive.
Something like this would work:

Thread => Libronix (including Logos for Mac 1)>License Agreement includes "one user" guidance by Bob in Jul 2009 (super-ceded by Faithlife terms almost ten years later for one human user).
Bob Pritchett said:What about my spouse? What about my child?
Well, now it depends. Are you and your spouse "one user"? I know lots of people who have a single email address like JoeAndMary@somemail.com. They have one computer, one email address, one copy of Windows, (one car? one cell phone?) etc. To me, they're "one user." Same thing when little Joey uses the family computer.
But if we extend the license to "officially" allow family use, we get (actual) scenarios like: Joe and Mary are both ordained ministers who attend and preach at different churches on Sunday morning. Each has an office, their own computer, their own salary and budget, and even their own church secretary. This, to me, doesn't feel like "one user". This feels like two users.

(super-ceded by Faithlife terms almost ten years later for one human user).
Bob made it very clear in his post that even then, his statement was in no way meant to replace the EULA. Because of that, I personally wouldn't see an updated EULA as "super-ceding" his statement (unless it was a radical update and quite explicit in the details, indicating a shift in approach).

To avoid any dilemma I will simply transfer the Spanish package to my wife's newly created Logos account and pay the transfer fee. This is why the EULA is silly and not specific enough. How does a company expect its users to spend $3000 dollars in digital books and then expect the other person (husband or wife) to spend money on the same resources. In my marriage, although one computer may be considered hers or mine, we still share and grab what ever is available at the moment and use it. Imagine having to tell my wife, oh you are not allowed to open that program because only I have a right to use it even though it was purchased with money we both worked for. I mean she is my wife, and Logos should take that into consideration when writing the EULA.
Now I wont have access to the Spanish resources because unlike everything else in our home, it would be illegal to share Logos with my own wife.

Why? Unless you are explicitly told otherwise by FL, I would assume you can share the package.

Before paying transfer fee, suggest discussing situation with Faithlife since am anticipating terms being modified for Christian Home school licensing. Faithlife post by Phil Gons about working on a Christian Home based package lineup is now a couple months old (dreaming of Home base packages including bilingual).

I wouldn't worry about it until they tell you that you are in violation, which I am confident that they will not. I don't think the EULA should have ever been brought into this conversation.

Now that I think about it, when I purchased the Spanish package I did tell the agent over the phone that I wanted the Spanish tools and resources for my wife to be able to use it. He didn't say anything about us not being allowed to do that and so I would assume they really are not concerned about that.
