Sorry that I can't post a copy of The Ladder of Divine Ascent as a PB (copyright issues) or make a real link in the lectionary, but here's your Melkite Lenten resource. Link to PDF is at top of lectionary.

1588.Table for Reading The Ladder of Divine Ascent.docx

The edition The Ladder of Divine Ascent, published by Holy Transfiguration Monastery has the verse numbers which are missing in the Paulist edition.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Peace to you, Martha!         *smile*                 Lent is almost upon us, so I need to prepare for the season of preparation!

Just took a peek online re "the Ladder"!               Some really heavy stuff there!             *smile*

Thanks for your labours of love in this area!

Rosie found a PDF of a 1950's translation that has the verse numbers http://www.prudencetrue.com/images/TheLadderofDivineAscent.pdf

I'm working on trying to convert it to a PB for my own personal use. So far all attempts at converting the PDF to Word while retaining the footnotes have failed, but I'm about to try the trial version of Nitro Pro 8 and will see if that works. If it's not going to be quick, I won't bother doing it. But if it works for me, others might want to do it for themselves as well.

EDIT: Nope, it didn't do the footnotes correctly. Phooey! Would have to do major copy/paste work to make all the footnotes into real footnotes. Might still do it (I sometimes get a bee in my bonnet about such things and won't let go until I've done it), but less likely that others will want to follow in my footsteps on their own.

Rosie, Word 13 brings the footnotes in correctly.

Is Word 13 the one that comes with Office 365? Is there any way to get Office 2013 as a non-cloud-based product? I don't see any version of Office above Office 2010 on the Microsoft Office website, except if you subscribe to Office 365. I don't like subscription based software, and I don't want to store my Word documents in the cloud.

EDIT: Also, if I install it, can I still run Office 2007 (which I'm using now) alongside it, or does it obliterate whatever older version of Office you have?

Also, is the .docx file generated compatible with older versions of Office? Maybe I could get myself a Windows 8 machine just for playing around with this and still be able to use older versions of Office on my desktop (where I'm running 2007) and laptop (where I'm running 2010).

It's a free beta - the first time I've actually liked an MS beta product. Yes, I still run Office 2010 - it doesn't overlay. I'm not certain about files backwards compatibility but I think they are. If you can't find it, send me email and I "sneak" you a copy of the docx file.

I tried using Office 13 to convert this PDF, and in fact MJ is correct it does an excellent job of making footnotes real footnotes! Everything looks correct when you hover over a footnote, but click on some of the footnotes, and you'll see that the text is displayed strangely - like it's short lines or something, some of them you have to scroll down to see the whole text as opposed to showing the whole footnotes as other resources do. Click on footnote 4, for example. I wonder if this can be fixed, is this a Logos problem or Word problem?

You're right. I think it is on the Logos side and will create a bug report.

No, this was a problem with the Word conversion. Some of the footnotes aren't converted correctly, including the problem that some have the right margin set way too far to the left. I've fixed them all. Sorry I can't post the fix here, but if you'd like a copy of the document, encode your email address somehow for me so that spam bots can't figure it out (e.g., put in removethis in the middle of your domain name somewhere) and I'll send it to you.

Can we use this a proof we need this in Logos by Lent 2014?

I can't even think about using this during this Lenten season since I've commited to reading the entire GNT in Greek and then the Psalms.  I'm going to be busy, busy, busy.

Everyone who asked me for a copy of this: alas, my hard disk crashed and I am now away for a week (the crash happened just before I left, so I haven't had time to do anything about it. Hopefully I'll be able to recover everything from my backup when I get home, but even that will take a while. So I won't be able to get this to you in time for Lent. MJ, I don't remember whether I sent you a copy of the document after I'd finished prepping it as a Logos PB. If so, could you email it out to all these folks? If not, could someone bump this thread on about Tuesday of next week so it shows up in my threads that I need to read.

    Thanks.

And pray for my hard disk. I do believe that God hears prayers about technology, self-serving as they may seem. I use my computer to do ministry to a lot of people, so it's important. But I've been glad for the downtime from it this week. A kind of forced technology Sabbath.

I think I've just sent the right file off to everyone.

So that's what you're giving up for Lent? You saw the cartoon of what the Pope gave up for Lent[:D]

fgh and Ken - it's been sent. I received an error message as I have with Rosie. She always got it despite the message so I'll assume it went through unless you tell me otherwise.
