Finally found the Cause for Slow Logos4 Mac

After months of battling the spinning beach ball every time I changed a reference, I finally found the culprit, at least on my computer. I had given up on Logos4 Mac and went back to Logos4 Win on Parallels. But thought I would try one more process of elimination, and I found it.

The problem is "History." As soon as I closed the History window, Logos4 is quite snappy, comparable to Windows. Too bad because I really like the history pane, but until they get it up to speed, it is off for me.

Hope this helps some others who are having problems with slowness.

Not sure this is something that you can really turn off. Any window that's open will use up some memory. In my experience the exegetical guide seems to use a lot of memory.

Especially Word by Word section (personally removed from My Exegetical Guide; created custom Word by Word guide if want report for a verse).

I am referring to the information window that is available from the bottom (3rd up) of the tools menu. It looks up info. for everything you click your mouse on. On my setup anyway. it definitely slows down the works. I have a 8 core MacPro with 16 gig of memory and the Exegetical guide zips right along, even when the word by word box is open. But the information window is a killer. I have tested this over and over. Hope someone from Logos will look into it. I really like the info window.

History, on the other hand, is 4th from the top. [;)]

That Information is slow has been known a long time. There is a reason "Focus on Speeding up the information window" is #13 on Uservoice.

I didn't realize that I had the History window in one of my Tabs and feel that closing it eliminated the slight sluggishness that I still experienced. I must confess though that having my iPad has greatly reduced the time spent on my Mac. So this is untested speculation.

While any improvement is, of course, a good thing, this also has me a bit confused: one person reports slowness in the History panel, and you immediately fix it in the next version? While at the same time -- and for a long time back -- there are 158 persons (286 votes) on Uservoice complaining about the slowness of the Information panel (those who would like to, but are out of votes uncounted), and that one you haven't even marked as 'planned', much less 'started', much less 'coming in the next version'? I do hope you know yourselves what the logic is in your priorities, because, frankly, all too often I have great troubles seeing it. Does Uservoice matter at all?

Does Uservoice matter at all?

As a Logos user with Many Volunteer Posts (MVP), know Uservoice and Forum discussions matter. Have personally experienced Logos 4 Mac improvements in some releases. For priorities, Logos tends to fix items being used. Hence, basis for Logos 4.3 Feature Parity ? post in Mac Beta since Feature Parity list gleaned from many forum posts and personal usage. Looking forward to Logos 4.3 improvements; not know how many feature parity items will be resolved (at least two, hopefully more).

Slow Performance section includes "To help Logos development optimization efforts, please post video or repeatable steps on Logos 4 Mac (Stable) OR Mac Beta, which can include screen shot(s), timing observation(s), and logs (see How to Report Bugs in Logos 4 Mac)"

Observation: some performance issues in Logos 4 Mac are in User Interface code specific for Mac. Other performance issues are in common code for both platforms, e.g. BUG: Newly applied highlighting STILL takes up to 10-15 seconds to appear, 100% CPU

I spoke too soon. I downloaded the new update and anxiously opened the history panel. While it did seem a little faster but the same problem still exists. Is this the update that was to fix it? Or is that the next one coming? Thanks

Sorry, I misspoke: by "next version", I meant 4.3. Any service releases between now and 4.3 will not contain the fix.

No, Logos 4.3 Beta 2 was released same day as original post (Tue 5 Apr). With Beta releases typically 2 weeks apart, Logos 4.3 Beta 3 should be released later this week (Tue 19 Apr, Wed 20 Apr, or Thu 21 Apr). Logos updates Logos 4 Beta Release Notes that can include bug fixes with reference(s) to forum thread(s).

Wiki also has Logos 4 Beta Program - information + risks. If Logos 4.2a SR-4 is installed, need to wait for Logos 4.3 Beta 3 before changing from Stable to Beta, see Do not upgrade from 4.2a SR-4 to 4.3 Beta 2 for details.
