Updated commentaries. (what do you do with the old?)

So, I took advantage of the March madness sale and finished my word Biblical commentary series. It came with some updated volumes and I am wondering how people handle the old volumes in their library, do you hide them? Use them in comparison??? Just curious.

I wouldn't hide them! They contain useful information too. Just because a series updates a volume doesn't mean the old one is obsolete.

More the merrier!! If they are quality commentaries, then you just added an additional quality resource to your library. An updated commentary volume does not always mean a more useful commentary volume.

I have the IVP Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, 1st Ed and 2nd Ed, and use both still.

I have made sure to start renaming my commentary volumes according to publication date and author to differentiate between the older versions and the newer version in order to avoid confusion. (See this thread: https://community.logos.com/forums/p/162928/964727.aspx)

Thankful for Title prefix so can distinguish between old and new volumes. Keeping old volumes can be useful for resource links from other resources (since may point to old volume because new was not available when resource was created/updated).

I tend to approach it in one of two ways.

Where the volume is a 2nd edition revision by the same author, I generally tag the volume as deprecated (a little unkind, I know), and deprioritise it accordingly (in my guides, collections, and such).

However, where the volume is a replacement (either by a new author, or a substantial revision by the same author) it is regarded as a distinct contribution to the field.

Broadly speaking, of course .

I agree with the others, I cannot envisage a situation where I would hide a volume for this reason.

How are series handled in this scenario? If, for example, I have NIC in a linkset and navigate to a reference that is covered by two volumes in the same series.... which one will win (and do we have any control over this (if leaving unhidden and in the same series)?

You might be able to control volumes via prioritization, but it would be onerous e.g. Psalms in one volume (new) vs. two volumes (older). With the Tyndale NT & OT series, I put the older volumes (11) in a series of their own, and made sure that the other volumes (47) were in another series. You can then prioritize the two series appropriately, put them in the same collection and have that control e.g. in PG and Parallel resource sets. Putting them in different collections is OK for PG but not for Parallel resource switches.

For Bible verse reference, if a series has more than one volume containing verse, then order is alphabetical (unless have individual volume prioritization to change order). Title prefix beginning with year causes alphabetical sort to be chronological so older volume is first.
