Wordsearch to Logos

The interface in Wordsearch Made sense to me. As a New to Logos user it appears to me that I will have to spend a LOT more time learning Logos than studying the Bible or preparing my lessons and sermon outlines for a long time to come. It sure isn't what I want to do. Mt Wordsearch Library is pretty large with a lot of investment, I am thankful that Logos is making an effort to to migrate the resources but I honestly don't know if I can migrate to SUCH a different way of doing things. I am almost 65 with effects of a Traumatic Brain Injury three years ago which makes remembering new ways difficult. I may have to just continue using my outdated Wordsearch offline. I am very frustrated already. In 2007 I had to abandon $5,000 dollars worth of Bible Software so it's unfortunately not my first rodeo. I use to build and repair computers from the early 1980's to 2003 and do some programing too so I am not dumb but, I am sick of having to abandon things that work GREAT!

Welcome to the forums. My father, a retired rancher and county computer nerd went into the schools every morning to solve computer problems well into his 80's. By  his mid-nineties the decrease in coordination and mental acuity made adjusting to new software difficult. But I found if it was presented one skill at a time for skills that he needed right then, he could still handle a computer. Keep coming to the forums to ask questions for exactly what you need. There is much of Logos you'll never need to use.

    Daniel,
I understand your pain, being both a Bible Explorer and Wordsearch 4 user, the switch to cross format hit me badly too.

There are a large number of us who have used multiple software platforms before, dont be afraid to ask in the "Wordsearch" forum here, "How do I?", as many will assist you

    Hi Daniel,

Ask all the questions you want about how to do stuff on the forums, and you'll get all the assistance possible. The community on these forums is very accustomed to helping people new to Logos with all kinds of stuff. Learning Logos on your own can be challenging. Learning with forum dwellers' assistance is a lot easier. [:-)]

A few resources of note that are in Logos and should transfer, but have not:

    NASB77

    Preacher's Outline and Sermon Commentaries

    AW Tozer Collection

    Expository Preaching Outlines - Olford

Please let me know the status of these. I realize there are many that are not yet in Logos, but these resources are currently available.

    Thanks!!

actually I got this one from the merge (it's just called NASB)

    Preacher's Outline and Sermon Commentaries

Do you mean POSB? (the B stands for Bible, even though those are commentaries), if so, I got one [Romans] from the merge

We don't have a record of NASB77 in your Wordsearch licenses. Another customer has reported missing Tozer as well (https://community.logos.com/forums/p/193801/1117039.aspx#1117039) so there may be something we need to look into further there. We probably won't have any updates until early next week, sorry.

As a New to Logos user it appears to me that I will have to spend a LOT more time learning Logos

I think that is the reaction of many people new to Logos Bible Software.

Let me suggest you begin by doing the simplest things possible with Logos. Launch your studies from the Logos Home Page by typing a passage or topic into the Go bar and hitting Enter. This will give you simple but helpful layouts of your Bible and key Logos tools. From there, you can add additional tools or do searches from the right click menu on words.

Then I'd suggest you view one of the Logos video tutorials every day (or at whatever pace you like) to add to your understanding and your skill set.

You can keep going back to WordSearch for awhile to get things done you haven't yet learned to do in Logos.

Take a small bite at a time and it won't be too difficult.

    Best of luck.

Remember there is a lot of help available in the regular Logos 8 Forum besides here. This is a friendly place and no question is too simple.

This sounds simple enough for a guy that has worked with computers since 1987 but, my situation is that I am a Pastor that needs to prepare two sermons and a Bible study each and every week along with doing everything else a Full-time Pastor must do. I do not know how I can find the extra time to learn how to do what I have been doing with just having the time for the Bible study and sermon/lesson preparation I already do.

I started preaching in 1988 with PC Study Bible I upgraded and used that program until version 5. I have PC Study Bible 5 working on my Windows 10 Computer even though Biblesoft support told me I could not do it. (The installer will not run so I worked around that). I really did not like PC Study Bible version 5 and moved on pretty much abandoning my investment.

The problem imposed on me by this is mostly about my time, and then about the effects of the brain injury which make it difficult to remember new ways of doing things.

I also have used Swordsearcher - Wordsearch, Bible Analyzer, Quick Verse, and a few others but LOVE Wordsearch 12. The HTML editor with quick mouse hover links to my Bible Window is one of my favorite features. I do all my sermon and lesson outlines with it and preach and teach from the program too. I have 882 books made up of 2094 volumes and the organization is where Wordsearch really shines, and from what I have seen and read so far where Logos is lacking?

Is there an easy way in Logos to see all the resources that have migrated so far in a list form?

    Welcome to the Logos Forum!

Most likely, it is related to the email account that you have associated with WS and the one you use to login to L8. This forum is LARGELY other users, to get a solution from someone who has access to your account it is best to email cs@logos.com or call customer service.

When Logos took over WS (which I loved),  I sat on the sidelines and waited for about 3 weeks or so. I have observed some things:

    1. The learning curve for learning Logos is steep, that's because Logos is much more complex and powerful. WS, even WS 12 was a more simple program and was very limited in what it did if you wanted to get away from basic studies. i.e. Tracking words to original language took some work in WS and seems to be lot easier in Logos.

    2. Logos is moving over WS resources into Logos at a pretty good speed. I'm still waiting on my verse lists, my documents, my personal books, etc.  I took the bite and transferred my notes myself as I need my notes.  I made the decision to only work in Logos... My mind gets tired working in both programs.

    3. If you have different emails (one for WS and a different one for Logos) then your resources won't get transferred because of that. You must have the same emails else Logos doesn't know where to put your stuff.

    4. There are many, many, many videos about anything in Logos. Google what you are looking for in Logos 8 or 9 and you'll most likely find more than one video about the matter. Then, get a cup of coffee and watch as many of the videos as you can. When you do, fire up Logos and pause the video and work through what they do in the video. Learn by seeing then doing!  Also, the people on these forums have been very helpful and patient with all my dumb questions. Believe me, I ask dumb questions!

    5. Life is about change. Most people fight the change instead of embracing it. Fighting change makes it harder to learn. I like many have went from one Bible program to another then another, then another and finally Logos. Changes! But life is like that. Our attitude can work for us or against us. It's really our choice.

I believe you fairly describe some of the differences between the two programs and map out an honest path to navigating the change.

Updated existing resources in your library are no issue at all when you use the added filter facet. Things you actively bought in one of the FL shops or PrePubs that came through at the same time as WS resources will show in the Order History in your FL account.

Daniel I know exactly how you feel because our ministry situations are very similar. I am continuing to use WordSearch while at the same time trying to learn Logos with limited success. Though I have looked many times, I still cannot figure out how to coordinate selecting a word from my Bible translations with  "That's Easy for You to Say" for pronunciations. I have followed a video on moving up the priority and when I select a word it still will not work without me typing in the word to Easy. In WS all you had to do is select a word in the Bible Translation, right click and pick pronounce. Done. I am very frustrated as well Brother.

I have not received any responses to my questions about this.

I see that arrogance that "our way is better" so we will just do away with the features you liked is likely going to prevail, many will adapt others will leave. I am glad I have other choices that will do what I want to do even if I have to use dedicated old software, new is not always better.

Place your questions on using Logos in the Logos 9 desktop app forum to get answers. Most Logos savvy users don't follow the Wordsearch forum -- especially in a long thread that doesn't get bumped when no answer has been given.

I see that arrogance that "our way is better" so we will just do away with the features you liked is likely going to prevail

There have been indications that some form of the Lesson Builder is likely to be built. Other items I haven't paid much attention since my use of Wordsearch was limited to teaching my Dad to use it a decade or two ago. But if you've spent any time in software development, you will know that how a feature is integrated into an application depends on the basic structure of the application. So the same feature will have a different implementation in Logos than in Wordsearch. What Wordsearch users can do to make sure their needs are met is to add features present in Wordsearch but missing in Logos to the user feedback site Roadmap | Faithlife Feedback then drum up support. Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing which features FL may already have in their development roadmap so one may be drumming up support for something that will be done anyway.

PS. Please read the forum guidelines Forum Guidelines - Faithlife Forums (logos.com) I can't speak for others but in my living room calling others arrogant is not a great way to start out.

    2 things from WS:

    1) Ability to have a highlighter of my choice scroll along verse by verse as I read thru the Bible.

    2) Ability to "click" on a Strong's Numbers reference within the Bible I was reading.

So far, I really miss both features. I'm hoping it is or will be available in Logos.

I am not a user of Strongs but when it is displayed as an interlinear you can just click on it. Or if you have the information tool open, you can open Strongs from there.

  • 2) Ability to "click" on a Strong's Numbers reference within the Bible I was reading.

    Welcome [:D]

Logos uses original language Lemma more than Strong's numbering of Greek & Hebrew Lemma's (as original language Lemma can be used in Apostolic Father resources that have Greek Lemma's not numbered by Strong since they did not appear in Biblical text)

Right Click context menu in a Bible with Reverse Interlinear (OR an original language Bible) includes Lemma and Root

Right Click => Lemma has Bible Word Study link, which can show translation rings (can click on a ring segment to show verses).

Right Click => Lemma has Pronounce so can hear Lemma spoken. Homeschool starter bundle included Greek Pronunciations Dataset (Koine)

Bible Word Study includes Root section that shows related original language Lemma's (something missing from Strong's numbering).

Right Click => Root can search Bible to find related word translations: e.g. <Root = lbs/el/χαιρω> (as shown in screen shot bottom left)

Most (if not all) Lexicons in Logos/Verbum have original language Lemma indexing: e.g. Greek Headwords. Some Lexicons also have Strong's number indexing. One option is prioritizing Lexicons so Right Click Lemma lookup has Top Five lexicons of Lemma indexing (without Strong's) while Strong's Number lookup has five more Lexicon choices. Thread => searching strong's numbers has prioritization example from 2011.

Personally like Greek Audio New Testament so can use Read Aloud for Greek New Testament: e.g. Revelation 4:8

Ἅγιος ἅγιος ἅγιος κύριος, ὁ θεός, ὁ παντοκράτωρ, ὁ ἦν καὶ ὁ ὢν καὶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος.

Thread => Status of your Wordsearch Library has a reply showing one click of a Hebrew word updated Information Tool & four linked lexicons => https://community.logos.com/forums/p/193953/1147958.aspx#1147958
