This would definitely be helpful. I need to use a citation manager to keep track of all my research. It would be great if that capability was in Logos.
  • Yes, yes, yes please get this added to logos. This would be such a beneficial tool for all of us who are in seminary and those who are writing articles for journals and more. Please make this happen.
  • This would be so helpful
  • Yes please.  This would be huge.  This is what I’ve been needing. The note function is close
  • All for it. Sounds like a good and helpful innovation.
  • I primarily use Logos for academic work. This would be a game-changer. Please do add!!!!

I am in favor of this idea. YES!!! I suggested this on the Logos forum before L10 was released.
  • This would be so helpful!
  • @Donovan Palmer  I agree with this, and would add that it would really help if Logos could make it similar to the rising number of thinking apps out there: Roam, Notion, Obsidian. . .

Having front and backlinks, etc. . .
  • This is a great idea.  I have a Ph. D. in Biblical Studies and would really like to get back to writing professional academic papers and get back into teaching. I have been away from Academia for 15 years focusing on ministry instead but would love to teach again.

I would love to see this because Professors and Seminarians use this software. I 'am both a professor and seminarian, and I would love to see this developed.
  • This will be a great tool in our toolbox
  • Creating a sermon and a paper at the same time would n be a time saver for a seminary student!!

Yes! Yes! Yes! It will be great to be able to have the same functionality (of footnotes and bibliography) in Sermon notes as well — I often put in bibliographical info in my sermons for my own reference later on.
  • Love this idea. I tried using the sermon builder for this but it doesn't work.
  • This is a fantastic idea!

Superb idea whose time has long since been due...

So, with "over 3 years ago" timeline, what is the Logos progress to date? Or is it even under consideration, given I've not seen any announcements of intent or any progress reports... Is this something Logos is considering, planning or deep-6-ing?

    That would be great!
  • This would be great! I'll be done with school (for now) in a year, so I might get to use it, but I think many will.

Bibliography support for citations that aren't in logos would be great. I'd love to house everything in one place for papers.

I use the SBL citation format, and there are many problems with the Logos-generated bibliography and footnote entries--e.g., editor of the series cited as editor of the individual resource; page numbers shown as, e.g., 125-130 instead of 125-30; volume numbers not included. An overhaul of the bibliography styles function is an essential part of this project, and could be a stand-alone piece.

@Donovan R. Palmer  I don't think we need all the import functions. Just the ability to include non-Logos titles in the footnotes and bibliography. BTW, for anyone looking for PDF cataloging, I use Paperpile for that. Works great.

Yes! I'd like that with Sermon Builder so that when I have THAT person asking me sources I can go to the bottom of my sermon and tell them.

Yes, this would be a great help to those of us who are writing papers. I see that this request is 3 years old. If it is dead in the water, please just tell us.

I would expand this to book writers as well. something that can help writers organize their thoughts. Basically converting items in a mind map or outline and flushing them out till it becomes a book or paper while keeping track of themes, verses, or anything else of importance to the writer.

Similar to sermons this could be utilized by christian bloggers as well to keep track of topics covered, or topics they still need to cover, much like this 4 year old post.

@Fr Devin Roza  I agree that it would not be a good use of time for Logos to invest into building and maintaining full-featured word processing. I am very happy with Word, Scrivener, and Zotero. I would love to see Logos build deep integrations for each of those apps because I think Logos could augment their capabilities in some exciting ways (like a RefTagger plugin for PDFs in Zotero, etc.). It's obvious that many users are switching back and forth between those apps and Logos, and I think Logos could make that easier without having to replace those apps.

I agree strongly in principle. However, I disagree strongly that it should be a separate tool from other existing tools (Sermon Builder/Editor, all Document types, Notes, etc.). It's all too disjoined. It needs to be a do-it-all word processing suite.

Roll Notes, Notebooks, all Document types, and Sermon Editor/Builder into one all-inclusive word processor. Similar to Evernote, OneNote, or another note taking app. None of the current functions or systems would be lost, but it would all be rolled into one place with full word processing capabilities. You can do your Sermons, Clippings, Notes, Passage Lists, Canvas, Diagrams, and all Document types from this one word processing suite. You could even build and write  apers and essays now. Full linking, anchoring, and all other ecosystem features that already exist. Maybe name it Documents or Docs. All you'd have to do is open a new Doc and at the top, select Doc type (Sermon, Note, Diagram, etc.), assign a Notebook (if applicable), assign any Tags and you're good to go. If you've ever used Evernote or OneNote, then you know what I'm talking about. Maybe Logos can contract with one of those companies to build it into Logos?

Don't call it Paper Builder, call it something all inclusive like Documents or Docs.

This would be great. Just started my MDiv and this would be a huge help.
  • Although it might be more convenient to be able to compose research papers and the like within Logos, I believe that the time and resources needed to create such a application would essentially be rewriting MS Word to work within Logos. There are many other things that need development in my opinion.

In Mdiv now and this would be fantastic.
  • I just finished my bachelor and this tool would have helped immensely.

It would be great if Logos had its own document creator to create research papers in app. You already have a base to build upon. Notes can be created with some basic document features, it just needs to be expanded to be a full fledged document creator.

I think the idea is fantastic and it would encourage us to use our libraries even more.
However, I also think it's urgent to improve Logos' "notes" and "sermon builder" feature. It's very poor and rudimentary. It's a pain to use Logos to type any text. If you have to create yet another half-baked feature, it's better not to have it at all. For me, this has been Logos' biggest flaw over the years.

I came here to add this suggestion. I'm glad to see it already exists!

I've tried to write articles in Sermon Builder to take advantage of its tools. For instance, I love how Sermon Builder takes any scripture reference and automatically turns it into a hyperlink/reftag(?). This makes reviewing scripture references very convenient. It's also nice to have your written work in Logos.

However, other aspects of the Sermon Builder do not translate well for writing articles and make it quite clunky.
    • For instance, if you paste a quote from a resource, it does not automatically insert it citation information.
    • It also automatically formats the quote in a particular style unsuited for written work.
    • Also, every time you enter a scripture reference, it auto prompts inserting its text, which is annoying when you just want to add the reference.
    • In order for the reftag to work, you have to enter the name of the biblical book in each new sequence. For instance, if I reference Luke 1:1 at the beginning of a paragraph and then add "1:2" in the next sentence, it does not recognize 1:2 as referring to Luke 1:2.
    • Sermon Builder lacks the capacity to add footnotes or endnotes.

Essentially, if Logos could take the Sermon Builder, eliminate some of its unique Sermon Builder aspects that get in the way of writing and actually make it more clunky, and turn it into something more akin to a native Logos word processor, that would be fantastic.

I probably wouldn't call it "Paper Builder," since this tool could be used for things other than papers. For instance, I could see people writing lectures, books, journal articles, blog posts, etc. With that in mind, I'd also suggest keeping some of Sermon Builder's functions like the ability to generate slides, create handouts, presenter mode, etc. I'd also keep something comparable to the "Sermon Info" panel, where users can add tags and descriptions to their documents.

Other ideas: It would also be great if this tool
    • Automatically tracked citations to generate a bibliography.
    • Allowed users to set the style guide for the documents, adjusting all citations accordingly.
    • Automatically used ibid (for styles that allow it) and adjust its occurrences when citations are moved.
    • Page and pageless options.
    • Ability to export into common file types for submitting written pieces.
    • Ability to copy and paste into HTML friendly material for those producing web-based content.
    • Ability to add tables and images (many papers include charts and visuals).

I also think this tool, and Sermon Builder, should include the ability to open documents from within the Builder. Right now in order to open a previous sermon, users have to go to Documents. It would be nice if any Builder (e.g., Sermon Builder, Paper Builder) had something like a "File" menu item to open previous documents from right within the tool.

This is a fantastic idea.  I would also love for them to integrate into LibreOffice products as well.  There are many people world wide who prefer LibreOffice for price and other convenience. I can't afford Microsoft and don't want to work strictly online.

I would like to write a book. If Logos added options in Sermon Builder for writing papers, (Rename it presentation builder), the combined components would make it possible to actually write web articles, presentations, sermons (which are presentations) pamphlets, college papers, and even books with or without graphics.

I'm interested in writing short studies for small-groups and personal home study.

Just make sure these books it writes can be easily added into Logos.

Of course, I'm stuck without it, even if they do it because I don't want the subscription, LOGOS no longer cares what I think

@Kirk E. Miller  YES YES YES to this! As is, it’s a struggle to use the sermon builder. I have found work arounds, but it is not great.
