Please add a per-layout setting to enable a layout to automatically update and save changes.

This would be more of an annoyance than a help for me if it were automatic. Being a settable option is acceptable. However, I would like the Library panel in a layout to remember its filters - that is my biggest issue with layouts.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

It sounds inconvenient unless layouts would default to not automatically updating. I have certain layouts which I want to open to their pristine state, regardless of what resources were previously left open.

Thanks to FL for including Carta and a Hebrew audio bible in Logos 9!

  • I would love to see my layouts in their "pristine state" auto update the location/reference of those resources. In other words, I wouldn't want the auto-update to save the resources that might have been opened temporarily (that could be done via the current "update layout" option) but I would like to the ability to have certain layouts automatically save the latest reference.

Gotta disagree on this request; I frequently alter my custom layouts for a particular passage or study session, and then reset them for the next time. Now, if EACH layout had an independent toggle for updating, THAT would be useful.

@gplawhorn-54, yes, it would be a per-layout setting. I'll update the description to make that clearer.

@RJH Yes, I would love this! It would work great for custom reading plan layouts.

If this was a per-layout setting, I agree. Some layouts, I want to be able to reopen and clean up my workspace whereas others (such as theological papers for seminary) I would like to update automatically with the sources I have opened as I continue my research.
  • @Phil Gons (Faithlife)   great!   I would like to see that.  The number of times I have had to leave, and then came  back to find all my changes gone because i forgot to "update active".  I tend to work through a book at a time, and cannot possibly do it all in one sitting.

I would vote for this with a change... such that we had an option that would automatically save the layout when we close it, that we could choose or not choose. I sometimes change a layout by adding or subtracting a resource and I like having my layout stay the same until I change it.

xn = Christan man=man -- Acts 11:26 "....and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch".

I agree with MJ. Smith. Automatic update is no good, but a per-layout toggle would be useful.

Please also add an option to let me define where resources of a certain type open on the screen when I open them. Basically a blank layout that isn't tied to a particular place in a resource but is more structural.

Having the option to autosave layouts would be amazing. I don't think autosaving all layouts would be good but having the ability to choose to have certain layouts save so that you can return easily to work in progress would be great.
  • I agree with this as an option to turn on or off. PC updates and restarts sometimes occur without user intervention and
    when this happens, layouts reset.

I'd like this in certain cases, if i could control for which layouts it happens with.  The use case i'm thinking of here is sequential daily reading of a book, where i want the layout to auto-update with my current location.
  • This would be super helpful to me. The suggestion, as written, is exactly right. Make it a per-layout setting so that those of us who want to can set our current layout to automatically update, and those who don't like that aren't disturbed.

This would be fine as long as the layouts configured to update have a location with the original layout so I can always go back to it, with the recent changes so I can open the last update when I need to close it. This could be done as a kind of history within the saved Layout.
    An example:
I have a saved Layout that I use to prepare sermons. When I open the Layout, to start a new sermon or I modify it, I close and open new tabs.
If I need to close the Layout to do a Bible study, for example, it would be useful to go back to where I left off in the sermon Layout.
But when I finish the sermon and have to start preparing another sermon at the beginning of the week, I would need to be able to start the original Layout instead of the updated one.
That would be the best of all worlds and would add tremendous flexibility!

I agree with the idea of having a per-layout switch to turn on or off autosave. I also like having a history of past saved layouts. The current layout facility does keep a history of sorts but one has to guess which past saved layout out of the list of past layouts actually has the old layout that you want. By guessing, based on the date and the appearance of the thumbnail pic, I have, from time to time, found the base layout that I needed. Also, I would like an autosave that kicks in when the program or the computer crashes or is forced to restart because of an OS update--something like the tmp or bak files some programs use, which one can change the extension and open in case of an emergency.
