David Paul desires links based on incomplete references that are edition independent. This is appropriate for a certain block of resources:
- The authors are all dead and no one carrying the text forward with new revisions
- There is a single, canonical form of the text or the revised edition carry the same structure as the original text
- There are divisions, most frequently chapters, that may be used as "milestones"
This would allow this resource
Westcott, Brooke Foss. Introduction to the Study of the Gospels with Historical and Explanatory Notes. American ed. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1902.
to be referenced as Westcott, Brooke Foss. Introduction to the Study of the Gospels with Historical and Explanatory Notes. Chapter 2 and to have that reference recognized and linked.
Note that while there are many resources that could benefit from this sort of "milestone", this is not a standard reference style so I don't know what percentage of linkages it could resolve.
