Foreward
I received a special gift years ago when I was a student at the Talbot School of Theology. That gift shaped my ministry from that day forward. I was assigned to pick up a man who was five foot three and whose vision was so impaired that he only had 10 percent vision out of one eye. Since he could not see well enough to get from place to place, he and I spent a lot of time driving back and forth, talking about the Bible and how to teach it. He said the most powerful way to explain the Bible is to use the Bible. After I asked him how to do this effectively, he said “I am going to give you a gift.” That gift was The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. He told me “Put this beside your Bible and use this essential resource to explain the Bible with the Bible for the rest of your life.” The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge identifies concepts and ideas in the Bible and then directs you to the other locations where those same ideas and concepts are throughout the Bible. When you read something like “being in Christ” and want to understand that better, The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge directs you to all of the places that concept is found in both the New and Old Testaments. The fastest path to a biblical theology is The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. Using a reference tool like this in your ministry will equip you, as it did for me, to demonstrate how wonderfully consistent the Word of God is. Not only will you find a truth repeat itself, but you will elucidate it, amplify it, explain it, and show how it works through the history of Scripture. In 1992, Thomas Nelson published The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, which revised and updated the classic gift I received. The editor of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, Jerome H. Smith, offers a life-changing gift for the church to continue learning how to interpret and understand Scripture with Scripture. Aside from the Bible, I value this book most in my studies.
