Logos 4 Beta 1 DVD

Having read numerous other posts from beta testers regarding problems they have experienced with certain aspects of the installation, I felt that I should write to inform you that I had no problems with:
1) Logos 4 discovering my resources on a secondary 1TB hard drive and properly indexing them. As a result of complaints from other beta testers I was concerned that Logos 4 would not recognize my resources stored on a secondary drive, but since my resource collection takes up about 30GB, I decided to try installing without moving the resource folder back to C:\
2) Logos 4 indexing ALL of my resources, including those pre February 2006. After reading about problems other beta testers were having with older resources, I was expecting the indexing phase of my installation to hang up on the older resources. I thought about removing the pre Feb 2006 resources but at the last minute decided to try the install first with all the resources and it worked just fine. Well done Logos!
Main system is Intel-based system with a Quad core processor running at 2.66 GHz and 4 Gb memory. 1TB hard drive. Windows XP Pro. Graphics card is NVidia GeForce 9800 GTX with 768 Mb Video RAM.

Anthony,
Can in chime in with a comment?
I also have LOTS of collections in V3 and mainly they were created because the searches were so darn slow!
But not so in V4!
So I'm rethinking my collections logic and only creating collections that make sense; I'm just making them as I go and trust me; once you've done a few queries; you'll really like the new way to filter resources and I don't think you'll have a complaint...
just my opinion.

Robert, thanks for your comment. Over the past few days, I've read a few posts regarding filter-based queries, but I don't know too much about them. Could you give me an example, or step instructions regarding how to run one of the filter-based queries? I'd like to see the power of these tools. You're help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Anthony,
Here is a shot of my list of collections so far; and also the syntax to filter the archeology collection.

Exactly, I can confirm that. More I learn about the new approach, more I like it. To make a collection took ages in v3, here it is a a few seconds of writing a search command. As addition to that, searching whole library paradoxically is faster, than searching the collection. Funny, but true.
What I want to find out also is co-relation of prioritized books and search ranked results list.

Just installed via DVD. Seemed to go without a hitch, but it finished up after I went to bed. When I woke this morning to check it out, I didn't have any error messages or anything, and I opened up Logos 4 to start exploring. Now, it seems to be indexing my resources again. Is that normal?
Initial impressions: layout is outstanding, I've only perused a few books so far, though! Had my first crash when I attempted to right-click on a word in BHS SESB Version. I was able to customize the opening, so that I have no sounds and so that I start with a blank screen, which is preferable for me.
Looking forward to working more,

To get the "other stuff" off the screen that you do not want, I just right-clicked on those unwanted options. For example, I do not want the transliterations. So on the left side where it has MSS Trl, I right-clicked there and then unchecked the two places where it has Manuscript (Transliterated) and Greek Lemma (Transliterated). This removed all the transliterations.
Charlene, I missed your response yesterday. These forums are really hard to navigate. I find myself missing things all the time.
This only works with Reverse Interlinears. There is no equivalent category, or window, for standard interlinears, and I hope we don't get one - I don't like the way it works, since you can only see one line(or part of a line) at a time. Not very helpful, IMHO. (Thankfully, I don't use any reverse interlinears on a regular basis, so I'm not complaining.)
Charlene said:I have not yet figured out, though, how to make this the default setting for any interlinear that I open.
In fact, if I close a reverse interlinear, or navigate away from it in the same pane, and later reopen it, my category settings are lost.

Can you tell me more about the collections you have in 3.x? We're open to importing them, but concerned that if we make it easy to bring these hand-built collections over, users won't ever turn them into (the much more powerful) query-built collections.
Do your collections "need" to be hand-built, or do they tend to group on author, series, or type of resource?
I have a number of types of collections:
author (because there is no standard naming convention for authors--MacArthur is probably listed about four different ways)
denominational (baptist, catholic, methodist, etc.)
Bibles by language
Bibles by translation style
by book of the Bible (all about Matthew, all about Mark, etc)
by various topics (Apologetics, Archaeology, Biographies, Creationism, Creeds, Cults, Devotional, etc.)
by set (Early Church Fathers, commentary series, etc.)
by theological perspective (Arminian, Calvinist, etc.)0 -

Mitch, do you get the runtime error when running autorun.inf, or when running Logos4Setup.exe? The autorun is known to be corrupt. If you haven't done it yet, navigate to the DVD and run the setup program manually.
I get it via the Logos4Setup.exe (manually).

It would pay you to check the Logos4Indexer.log in My Documents\Libronix Log Files folder during, or shortly after the session**. It will tell what is happening in plain English and might save you some time writing to the forum and waiting for an answer!
** logs are overwritten at the start of a new session with L4.

Robert, thank you for the example. I was able to duplicate this on my system. Where do I learn how to construct the syntax for the rules. Your rule of "type:journal title:spade" is something new to me. Please direct me to a resource where I can learn how to construct these query-based searches.
Also, how did you get your list of collections to display on the left side of your screen?
Thanks again, Anthony

Anthony;
you can find the syntax if you change the view to a sort of "details" view ala windows folders. Then you right click the title bar which as things like title, author, tag, publisher...etc..those are the "rules" to narrow things down....there is a huge list.
Also, I think that part of the screen shot was from a search....I just either spliced them together as one shot or I did the search drop down while the library was open...
I hope that helped.

Here is the best way IMHO how to find data for filtering and creating the collections:

Quick Question: When I installed over the net their was a link that I used to install/update language tools for v.4. After installing on a 2nd computer from the DVD which went smoothly, do I need to utilize the link or are they included on the DVD?

Thanks for the update.

Installing from the DVD when smooth. I missed the fact that the resource indexing would take so long, my bad. I do not have any workspaces, collections, and no topics in the Passage Guide. Openning resources is very slow and wish I could search the library by type not name.
I miss the menu and icons, am having trouble finding things. Passage Guide shows fewer commentaries for a Scripture passage than does v3.
I love the drop and drag windows. Biblical Places looks real nice. I just figured out how to create collections; cool. Now how do I get the topics to show up in the Passage Guide?
That's all for now.

Hi Gary
The topics I don't believe are set up yet although the label is there. For workspaces, go to Layouts at hte upper right, and rename the snapshot that is seet up the way you want and that becomes a workspace.

Let us know if you have any problems with installation from the DVD.
Phil,
My DVD finally arrived today in Oz (Wednesday 16 Sept). Installed without a hitch, including syntax resources. Also successfully Sync'd settings from my Desktop, Win 7 download installation (w/o Syntax updates).

Got it,
Installed no problem. Indexing short. Not sure if I can add my other resources, because there are only a few books.

Installed the DVD on my new MSI WInd U123 with 2Gig Ram and Windows XP SP3, fully patched... I let it run overnight for indexing, and it really did use the 8 gig of free disk space recommended by Logos... Seems to run ok at 1024x600, but I recommend using a freeware like DownScaling Switcher so you can see 1024x768 without panning the screen... The new interface is much cleaner, but not always intuative... I assume the ability to add/delete choices to the Home Screen is coming in a future version? I found that some setting such as changing default Bible did not seem to take until I closed Libronix cleanly and rebooted...
I really like the handouts generator...
I will keep playing with it, but as a Precepts student, really miss the ability to do markups of texts (for inductive studies)...
God Bless

John,
Can you explain what MSI Wind U123 is?
Can you explain what downscaling is and why I'd want it?

Sure,
The MSI Wind is a Netbook, which is one of the very small notebooks that have become popular of late... It's built in screen has a maximum resolution of 1024x600, which is slightly smaller then the standard 1024x768... The screen will "pan" (litterally move) so you can see greater resolutions, but I find that annoying... It seems that you can't resize text holding CONTROL and using the mouse wheel in this version of the Beta, as you can in IE for instance... Instead, I use a program that stretches/squishes the screen to simulate 1024x768, giving me more vertical space... This isn't for everyone, as it can make some text slightly blury, but it works for me... (I have also told my Windows START bar to auto-hide, giving me just a little more vertical space...)
The Netbook can display extremely good resolutions on an external monitor or projector, so I would it when teaching Libronix 3 classes and such, without having to lug a heavy system. It also works well for studies during the lunch hour...
You can read my full review of the netbook here: http://www.stilltruth.com/blog/normanjd/review-msi-wind-u123

My DVDF install went fine without any problems. One small glitch was the logos 4 desktop icon I had to manually refresh to get the logos icon to appear.

Just wanted to report that my installation of the DVD Beta 1 went great with no hiccups. I also upgraded an installation of Logo 3.0 to 4.0 via download on Windows 7, and everything looks great there too.

Yes,
I am an Acer net book user as well. I had the Sony VAIO series, which was way too small. I made a $275 purchase of the Acer One, and for the price of a nice lunch I upgraded the RAM to 2GB. It runs Logos wonderfully. I know that the indexing and updates are a little nuisance, but the speed on such an inexpensive unit makes the Logos 4 great for the road. I was afraid that it would churn and take for ever, but the speed even on difficult searches was impressive. I know that if you are over 40 with poor vision the Net book may not be the best choice, but it brings the power of logos on the road for less than a few pounds, hard to beat.
