Logos 4 Beta 1 DVD

The DVDs went out yesterday and should be arriving today, tomorrow, or Friday depending on your location. If you don't receive your DVD by Friday and would like to have a DVD, please let me know. Otherwise, feel free to join the download group.

In our haste to get the DVD out the door to you, the AutoRun file didn't get checked carefully enough. So to install it, you're going to need to manually navigate to the Logos4Setup.exe file in the root and double-click it to start installation.

Let us know if you have any problems with installation from the DVD.

    ALright Phil,

I'll try to wait for the DVD till Friday since I'm assuming your purpose is to test an install procedure. Besides, I have to finish five messages before I can goof off. :-)

Hmm Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

Wow, Southern California never seemed so far away from Washington as it does when waiting for the v4 DVD.  Testing v4 on a second computer that has no Logos 3 on it only increases the desire to get v4 on my Logos equipped laptop.

    Open, Open, Open...

I am happy to just wait for the dvd, patiently.

That may be optimistic for Australia!

Does it contain the syntax resources so we don't have to perform the extra 560 MB download?

Sorry, Dave. I think you're the only one outside of the US getting the DVD, so I was speaking about everyone else.

Does it contain the syntax resources so we don't have to perform the extra 560 MB download?

Yes. You'll be getting all of the Core, Media, and Syntax resources on the disk itself.

hi Phil -- It's late Wednesday now, but the DVD didn't make it to Eastern Oklahoma (45 min south of Tulsa) today. Perhaps tomorrow (or Friday). I'll let you know when.

    Hi Phil, et al,

The DVD arrived in this morning's mail and my wife brought it to me at the church. Install went swift and smooth, although as you noted I needed to manually start the executable.

It's now several hours later and I note that the systray shows 3,436 resources remaining on the indexing.

Ummm, for all the built in sync processes, I sure would be nice if the indexing from my laptop could be imported to my desktop. But then, I suspect that's a humongous file.

Install went very well -- no glitches. When it asked me to sign in, apparently I fat fingered my password, although I thought I got it right. But then, when I retyped it, all was well.

Aside from testing the program in general -- is there anything specific you want me (us) to look at, for, on the DVD install?

My desktop unit at work is a couple of years old, but it's 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 (sorry, it's not a Dual Core or anything, but it is Hyperthreading). It's running Win XP/Pro SP3 with 2gb RAM

This evening, or tomorrow, I'll install from the DVD on my Dell Studio running a 64 bit Vista OS. I'll let you know how that fairs

Hopefully, my dvd will get to Michigan on Friday or Saturday.  Then the fun begins.[:D]

I got my DVD and tried to install; but it said that I had a runtime error...see pic.

I had downloaded the download to hold me and uninstalled it before trying to install the DVD version.

    Can someone help?

Just to let the Logos staff know; when I had this crash I had uninstalled the download version of Logos and installed from the DVD.

I reformatted my laptop and reinstalled; the same crash message occurred but the app indexed fine and runs like a champ...hmm...

I received my DVD yesterday (Wednesday) in the mail - Kent Washington. Install went perfect.  As mentioned AutoRun did not work.  It first installed .net framework without incident, and then onto the program.  Logos 4 installed quickly, but slowed at identifying resources - not sure how long this took since I went to bed at this point. - I think that there was a reboot in there somewhere.

Woke up and the program was running, but still indexing and slowing down my machine.  I played for a few minutes, opened a bible and commentary.  Runs slow, but works faster when I paused indexing.  I'll resume it when I can.

As I noted in another forum discussion I got the DVD yesterday and the install went fine (yes I had to manually click the Logos4Setup.exe file). I had moved all my PBB's out of the main folder and don't know if it helped or not. The program seemed to finish indexing after about 4 hours (a lot better than some).

I don't know what the new resources are, or how to tell if I got them.

I find the "Connecting to Logos" screen each time I open L4 to be annoying, and I'm sure some won't like having to connect to Logos to use L4. So far, I don't know why this is necessary.

None of my collections were imported. I hope this will be possible in the future, since I have over 2000 resources and rebuilding all the collections would take an enormous amount of time.

When I opened L4 this morning, it did not resume where I was when I closed the program. That's disappointing. I'll have to find out if it's possible to open to where you left off. The "snapshot" feature is nice, though, and I was able to open to my last workspace (AKA "Layout") pretty easily.

Looking at the NA27 Interlinear, I still have not found a way to view only those lines I want to. For me that's just Greek and the English gloss. All the other stuff just clutters the screen. The help file points me to View | Interlinear, but that option is only available in Libronix. This is not acceptable to me, and hopefully will be an option in a future version.

Searching BDAG for a word from the NA27 (w/GRAMCORD, Int.) requires too many steps. I can't simple double click on the word anymore. It requires right click, select "Lemma" then choose from one of only 5 lexicons displayed - thankfully BDAG was one of the lexicons offered. However, when I used the right arrow key to navigate to the next lexicon, I went instead to ISBE (revised) and the entry changed from the Greek word to, what I assume is the first listed English gloss. Switching back with the left arrow key gave me the correct entry in BDAG, but with the English gloss. I don't see an easy way to navigate to other lexicons. I find this unacceptable. Maybe there's a different way to do this.

In fact the right/left arrow keys don't seem to work on English Bibles either. The left arrow didn't seem to do anything. The right arrow key moved me through all bibles (regardless of language), until it got to the latin Vulgate, when it stopped moving right. There is are two little arrows on the upper right of the pane that allow me to go back -- kind of like a browser's 'back' button. But there is no history stored there to jump back several pages. Easily navigating through Bibles, lexicons and commentaries (with keyboard arrow keys, or some other way) is a deal-breaker for me. I hope this feature will come back in a later iteration of the beta.

Unless I have three, and only three windows open, I can't figure out how to easily set up a three column display. Panes do not seem to be draggable (though tabs are). The active window goes to the left pane, so with a little playing around I got things set up the way I prefer (Greek Text | English Text | Commentaries).

The Bible Word Study Report is nice in some respects and lacking in others. First, it does not give a simple and complete list of all the verses where a word is used. This was the main part of the report that I used. At the bottom of the report there is a section called "Textual Searches" but for New Testament it shows 0 hits in 0 verses for dwrea (sorry for the transliteration), although it shows 11 hits in the bar at the top, and in the Translation part of the report. If I click on the circle there, I get translations in the ESV that correspond to that translation, but these are all in English only. The Grammatical Relationships section has the material in Greek and English, but I find the division into all the Grammatical relationships distracting. I'd love to see a simple list of all the passages in canonical order. If I want to dig deeper, the Grammatical Relationships could be helpful. Still missing from this report is an option to view cognates. If I'm looking at dwrea, my study would be incomplete without also looking at dwrean (adj.), dwreomai, dwrnma and dwron, not to mention  (again, sorry for the transliterations I'm not sure how to do Greek text here). Of course, I should also study synonyms for this word, and I would love it, if that were a part of this report, but that's on an entirely different level. I also think that for some terms it would be helpful to distinguish singular from plural as well (mercy, vs. mercies, e.g.), since there are times when the plural carries a different connotation than the singular.

My first impressions are that searching is faster and the interface looks nicer. But given what I note above, so far, it's harder to use than L3.

Rich, in order to do this you need to prioritize BDAG. Open My Library,  and type BDAG in the resource bar. Click "Prioritize" on the right, and then drag BDAG over to the right side. This will (at least for now) be the only Lexicon there, and double clicking a greek word will take you immediately to BDAG.

Prioritizing resources is the replacement for keylinking. If you right click on a resource in "Prefer these resources" you can set special options for them. There are other threads that address this topic that you can look at for more help.

What I mean is If I have three panes open and I want the pane on the left to be in the middle, I can't just drag (move) it there.

Help links: WIKI;  Logos 6 FAQ. (Phil. 2:14, NIV)

    Rich,

You can try closing and reopening, but on my system it takes place immediately. Just to be sure, are you double clicking a word in the NA27 or the NA27 with McReynolds? I am trying to double click now on the NA27 with McReynolds and I can confirm that nothing happens. This appears to be a bug.

As for the panes, you should be able to drag them. If you grab a window (by the tab area) and drag it, the screen will turn blue as you move it in different places showing you where it will drop. See the pics below (the first pic is me dragging a resource from the 2/3 pane to take up 1/3 of the screen. The second pic shows the resulting division). Is this what you're talking about?

What you can't do, unlike 3.0 is drag windows so you have random "unused space," or at least it is much harder to acheive that. The windows will always fill up space. But once you have three or more windows open, you can easily arrange them into 3 columns or various other configurations.

Can you tell me more about the collections you have in 3.x? We're open to importing them, but concerned that if we make it easy to bring these hand-built collections over, users won't ever turn them into (the much more powerful) query-built collections.

Do  your collections "need" to be hand-built, or do they tend to group on author, series, or type of resource?

Wow! Got my DVD today and started the installation (yes had to manually start the installation) and Wow, up and running in less than 30 minutes! And Wow, the home page, I love it, crisp, clean, clear.

Ok, now what next? I knew the application was indexing, everybody has been saying it’s taken their installation hours so I figure I’ll be here a while but it’s moving along pretty good. Ok, looked to see if my library is there and everything appears to be there including my collections and Wow, the speed, much improved over 3 and smooth! Checked out a few of my resources they all seem to be here. I love the way I’m navigating, kinda aimlessly, is there a user’s guide or manual? (What am I thinking?!) Checked out Exegetical guide, everything looks good here UNTIL I hit the sound/pronounce icon (nothing happened the first couple of times, no sound, no nothing then I get this ugly message from Windows: Logos 4 has stopped working! Oh no! My first crash! Ok, go to desktop and restart, no problem, wonder what happened? Let’s go back to the Exegetical Guide and try it again. Yep, definite problem with sound function, second crash!

Restarting the program, definitely not crazy about that logon screen, can we turn that off? System comes back up great. Won’t try sound again for a while. 62 resources remaining to be indexed and I’m done. Might try sound after indexing’s done though I doubt that could be the issue. So far, I’m liking what I see in spite of the 2 crashes. I think I’m going to enjoy this new version. Wait until the Accordance folks see this, I’ve got a professor friend that’s an Accordance fan. The two of us spend too much time debating which application is better!

Ok, that’s my initial look and reaction to 4, all in all I like it! I’m looking forward to further testing. I promise to be more serious about reporting anomalies in the future….thought I’d pass the time with you over my shoulder.

Hi James, thanks for the thoughts. It is good to view the release notes to see what is and isn't working to know whether or not the problem you encounter is a known issue, please see http://community.logos.com/forums/p/741/6455.aspx, also if you do experience severe problems like crashes/hang-ups please post the logs with your issue in a separate thread (soon we'll have a hierarchy to make it easier to post), please see the guidelines referring to this at http://community.logos.com/forums/t/728.aspx

Do  your collections "need" to be hand-built, or do they tend to group on author, series, or type of resource

The initial reaction will be to import from v3, where I have collections for all resources. But the main categories of commentaries, bibles and dictionaries are fairly easy to build with queries and the speed of searching the entire library has already negated the need for me to have extensive collections. I would suggest that Logos provide starter collections as below, which would get people quickly familiar with the query method.

    All Bibles ->   type:bible

    English Bibles  ->  type:bible lang:English

    Greek Bibles  ->  type:bible lang:Greek

    Hebrew Bibles ->  type:bible lang:(Hebrew, Aramaic)

    ALL except Bibles -> rating:>=0 -type:bible

    Commentaries -> type:commentary

(some metadata errors & personal choice will see some resources put into the Minus bin. I also add the Reverse Interlinears eg. ESV, LEB, NRSV, NASB95 into Greek/Hebrew Bibles!)

To make a Lexicon collection more feasible via query I would suggest  language codes for Gk-Eng, Heb-Eng be established to separate them from type:dictionary (or allow multiple language tags  eg. English, Greek).

DVD was there when I got home today (southern California). It's been about 45 minutes since I logged in. All it says is "Preparing Your Library".  How do people know how far the indexing has gotten?

    Hi Rich,

To get the "other stuff" off the screen that you do not want, I just right-clicked on those unwanted options. For example, I do not want the transliterations. So on the left side where it has MSS Trl, I right-clicked there and then unchecked the two places where it has Manuscript (Transliterated) and Greek Lemma (Transliterated). This removed all the transliterations.

I have not yet figured out, though, how to make this the default setting for any interlinear that I open.

Charlene, I missed your response yesterday. These forums are really hard to navigate. I find myself missing things all the time.

This only works with Reverse Interlinears. There is no equivalent category, or window, for standard interlinears, and I hope we don't get one - I don't like the way it works, since you can only see one line(or part of a line) at a time. Not very helpful, IMHO. (Thankfully, I don't use any reverse interlinears on a regular basis, so I'm not complaining.)

I have not yet figured out, though, how to make this the default setting for any interlinear that I open.

In fact, if I close a reverse interlinear, or navigate away from it in the same pane, and later reopen it, my category settings are lost.

    Phil,

I'm sure glad that I read this!  I thought my DVD wasn't working and I was going to have to send it back.  My computer crashed early this morning and I've spent the day reloading everything so Logos 4 arrived right on time since it corresponds with what I've been doing all day long.  I'm in the process of loading it right now and I'll check back later to note my impressions.

DVD arrived safely in the cornfileds of Illinois today. Indexing now.

Just as a reminder - if you are in the DVD group, read Phil's original post. Auto Play will not work nor does double-clicking on the drive letter. You need to right-click and hit explore. Then click the setup file and you are off to the V4 races!

I'm looking forward to working with the beta.

DVD Made it to Austin, Texas at 5pm

about 1000 resources indexed (removed about 250 pre Feb 2006 lbxlls, 12 lix/lsf,  70 pbb)

Installed and indexed on laptop in about 1 hour

Installed and indexed on desktop in a little over an hour.

Indexing would stall if DVD was removed. Once indexing completed DVD was not needed.

    Trey Selman

Received the DVD to day here in FL. Did the install, ran into the same indexer crash problem as I did with the download (.xml files - timelines had to be removed from the resources directory to get the indexer to run. Total installation and indexing time was about 2 hours for approx 350 resources.

    Logos 10 - OpenSuse Tumbleweed, Windows 11, Android 16 & Android 14

Hello All! Got my DVD this morning and started the install shortly after. I did suffer a devastating sense of let down when it didn't start automatically. But a quick trip to Windows Explorer, a couple of clicks on the mouse and we were installing. I am now contemplating shaving for the third time since I started, waiting for the resources to index. still, having read all the early scuttlebut I a really looking forward to diving in.

Yes! DVD arrvied safely toward in suburbs of Chicago. I had to right-click--->explore to get it running. I was scared when it said "preparing your library--this may take a really long time"--but it was done in a few minutes. Now it is indexing (2,858 resources remaining) for the last 1 hour. I like new interface! However, it did seem cluttered and too many things going on (blogs, news, excerpts, etc.) I think you can customize it, but how do we get rid of excerpts? Do we have the option of changing fonts like in Logos 3? I haven't really tried anything else. This is because I tried a search and it crashed. I am thinking this is because it is still indexing.

I am going to wait until indexing is over to play around some more. Overall, so far so good and very pleased!

    Jim

I got mine Thursday. Installation was a breeze. Even the indexing didn't take that long, but I only have about 1400 resources. I suppose it took less than two hours.

I had installed from a download earlier, on a machine that has never had Logos on it. Again, no problems.

I'm trying to get used to what is there and what isn't, and how to do things I want to do. All I can say so far is that the new look is beautiful.

My system is a Dell XPS 420 (1 1/2 yrs old) with a Quad core running at 2.66 GHz and 4 Gb memory. Vista 32 bit. Home Premium Graphics card is NVidia GeForce 8800 GTX with 768 Mb Video RAM, if I remember. No, I'm not really a gamer.

Received the DVD Friday in Nevada. Installation went smoothly and indexing required approximately 5 hours for 3100 resources. The DVD install was my second install of the product since the first one was a download on a test system running Windows 7 without Logos 3.x. First impressions are positive. The interface is vastly different from 3.x so it will take some getting used to. I am trying to learn a new way of doing everything that I did in 3.x.

I am very impressed with the power and speed of the search engine. My first search was "Calvin WITHIN 10 words Geneva" and it returned several hundred hits within 12 seconds. As I noted in a previous post, at this point my main worry is about importing my collections over from 3.x to 4. Hopefully, Logos will see fit to offer an import collections feature in the final release. Well, back to my new power tool!

A correction to my previous post. My search results of "Calvin WITHIN 10 words Geneva" returned 2100 results in 0.43 seconds. My original time of 12 seconds was a typo.

Having read numerous other posts from beta testers regarding problems they have experienced with certain aspects of the installation, I felt that I should write to inform you that I had no problems with:

     1) Logos 4 discovering my resources on a secondary 1TB hard drive and properly indexing them. As a result of complaints from other beta testers I was concerned that Logos 4 would not recognize my resources stored on a secondary drive, but since my resource collection takes up about 30GB, I decided to try installing without moving the resource folder back to C:\

     2) Logos 4 indexing ALL of my resources, including those pre February 2006. After reading about problems other beta testers were having with older resources, I was expecting the indexing phase of my installation to hang up on the older resources. I thought about removing the pre Feb 2006 resources but at the last minute decided to try the install first with all the resources and it worked just fine. Well done Logos!

Main system is Intel-based system with a Quad core processor running at 2.66 GHz and 4 Gb memory. 1TB hard drive. Windows XP Pro. Graphics card is NVidia GeForce 9800 GTX with 768 Mb Video RAM.

Just installed via DVD. Seemed to go without a hitch, but it finished up after I went to bed. When I woke this morning to check it out, I didn't have any error messages or anything, and I opened up Logos 4 to start exploring. Now, it seems to be indexing my resources again. Is that normal?

Initial impressions: layout is outstanding, I've only perused a few books so far, though! Had my first crash when I attempted to right-click on a word in BHS SESB Version. I was able to customize the opening, so that I have no sounds and so that I start with a blank screen, which is preferable for me.

    Looking forward to working more,

It would pay you to check the Logos4Indexer.log in My Documents\Libronix Log Files folder during, or shortly after the session**. It will tell what is happening in plain English and might save you some time writing to the forum and waiting for an answer!

** logs are overwritten at the start of a new session with L4.

Installing from the DVD when smooth.  I missed the fact that the resource indexing would take so long, my bad.  I do not have any workspaces, collections, and no topics in the Passage Guide.  Openning resources is very slow and wish I could search the library by type not name.

I miss the menu and icons, am having trouble finding things.  Passage Guide shows fewer commentaries for a Scripture passage than does v3.

I love the drop and drag windows.  Biblical Places looks real nice. I just figured out how to create collections; cool.  Now how do I get the topics to show up in the Passage Guide?

    That's all for now.

    Hi Gary

The topics I don't believe are set up yet although the label is there.  For workspaces, go to Layouts at hte upper right, and rename the snapshot that is seet up the way you want and that becomes a workspace.

Let us know if you have any problems with installation from the DVD.

    Phil,

My DVD finally arrived today in Oz (Wednesday 16 Sept). Installed without a hitch, including syntax resources. Also successfully Sync'd settings from my Desktop, Win 7 download installation (w/o Syntax updates).

    Got it,

Installed no problem.  Indexing short.  Not sure if I can add my other resources, because there are only a few books.

Installed the DVD on my new MSI WInd U123 with 2Gig Ram and Windows XP SP3, fully patched...   I let it run overnight for indexing, and it really did use the 8 gig of free disk space recommended by Logos...   Seems to run ok at 1024x600, but I recommend using a freeware like DownScaling Switcher so you can see 1024x768 without panning the screen...   The new interface is much cleaner, but not always intuative...  I assume the ability to add/delete choices to the Home Screen is coming in a future version?   I found that some setting such as changing default Bible did not seem to take until I closed Libronix cleanly and rebooted...

I really like the handouts generator...

I will keep playing with it, but as a Precepts student, really miss the ability to do markups of texts (for inductive studies)...

    God Bless

    John,

Can you explain what MSI Wind U123 is?

Can you explain what downscaling is and why I'd want it?

    Sure,

The MSI Wind is a Netbook, which is one of the very small notebooks that have become popular of late...   It's built in screen has a maximum resolution of 1024x600, which is slightly smaller then the standard 1024x768...   The screen will "pan" (litterally move) so you can see greater resolutions, but I find that annoying...   It seems that you can't resize text holding CONTROL and using the mouse wheel in this version of the Beta, as you can in IE for instance...  Instead, I use a program that stretches/squishes the screen to simulate 1024x768, giving me more vertical space...   This isn't for everyone, as it can make some text slightly blury, but it works for me...  (I have also told my Windows START bar to auto-hide, giving me just a little more vertical space...)

The Netbook can display extremely good resolutions on an external monitor or projector, so I would it when teaching Libronix 3 classes and such, without having to lug a heavy system.   It also works well for studies during the lunch hour...

My DVDF install went fine without any problems. One small glitch was the logos 4 desktop icon I had to manually refresh to get the logos icon to appear.

    Thanks,

Just wanted to report that my installation of the DVD Beta 1 went great with no hiccups. I also upgraded an installation of Logo 3.0 to 4.0 via download on Windows 7, and everything looks great there too.
