How do you search by annotation tag?

Hello all,

I'm new to Noet, so this might be a very simple question whose solution I just don't see. I have a several notes documents with annotations across a number of different source documents. I have tagged the notes themselves, and would like to show only those annotations (across all notes documents) that have a specific tag. The only thing I can see is to use the search bar, but not only does it not show *only* annotations, but it doesn't show *any* annotations. And when I search in the help files, it only shows me how to work with document-level tags.

I would be happy to hear of anyone's solution to this.

Thanks

  • Hi Kurt,

I'm not sure if I understand your problem. You can filter your notes by their tag by going to the filter panel in your Notes window and selecting the tag you want to filter. You can do this within individual books via the method in the GIF below:

    Thanks for the reply.

Firstly, I don't see the same screen as you do. This is what I see.

There is no button on the left to select "Notes and Highlights". The only thing that shows is:

Maybe a version thing? I'm using Noet version 7.19.0.0009.

Secondly, even with your version, can you do a search for tags across multiple documents? Say, for example, that you make the tag "Aristotle" in multiple separate source documents. Can you display all those tags with their highlights and citations in a single window?

Hopefully I'm making sense. Thanks for your help.

I think so. Is this what you mean?

I'm using Logos 8. My understanding is that Logos 7 and Noet are basically the same except for some Bible specific stuff. I thought that the new note system was integrated into Logos 7 and, hence, would also be in Noet... but maybe not?

Anyway, it may still be possible for you to find all your relevant notes through a basic search along the following lines...

You can simply run the basic search and look under the "Your Documents" field, which only brings up clippings in my case, or you can change the search range from "Everything" to one of your "mytag:..." items.

  • P.S. I'm not very savvy with the software myself. I've just learned enough to get by with what I need to. If none of this helps you may have better luck getting a response if you post your question in the General forum. The Noet forum seems pretty dead and the Noet shell itself doesn't seem to be kept up anymore. Too bad. Probably would require a lot of money and some good publishing deals to really get some life.

Yes, I believe I had tried that before. When I select "everything", and search by tag name, it gives me results from Clippings files, but not the notes files. It's a bit confusing to me. The Logos 8 version looks much better, but the minimum price is still very high (over $250) given that I don't need this as a specific Bible study software. It looks like even Logos 8 would covers some of what I'm looking forward as well. I am looking for something that allows tagging and cross-referencing between a variety of documents, but that also gives you a hierarchical view of the tags you've created. I don't think I would really benefit from all the bible notes and commentaries, especially since this is for personal study.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your help. Real time saver!

  • You may be able to get the Logos 7 engine for free (https://www.logos.com/product/136022/basic

You may not benefit from all the Bible specific functions, but that doesn't really matter as long as you think its worth it for the other functions you'll get along with it.

I thought you said that Noet is the same engine as Logos 7. I'm using Noet already, which is free. It does much of what I want, but I'll have to play around more with it to see if I can overcome some limitations (like a hierarchical list of tags with counts beside them).

    Thanks again for your answers.

Early in 2019, it will become possible to pick up the base Logos 8 (and Verbum 8) engines for free.
