Enable "Active" Linking between ME Video and ME Script

The ability to link Mobile Ed "scripts" to Mobile Ed "videos" so they stay in sync (at least at the TOC level of the videos), seems like a no-brainer to me. But while a person can set up the linkage between script and video, it accomplishes nothing. Tongue Tied

When going through the videos for a course, there are times I want to pause the video and have a look at the script so I can read through something just said on the video--to slow down--to mull it over--then go back to the video. But linking the videos and scripts do not keep them in sync at any level and it can be a pain to have to scroll through the TOC of the script to locate what I think will be the correct script segment, and then search the script for what was just said in the video.

Would anyone else find it helpful/useful to be able to keep the videos and scripts in sync? If there's enough interest, I'll create a suggestion for it in User Voice.

I probably wouldn't sync the two, as I would find it distracting for some other pane to be scrolling as the video played.

How I tend to approach it is to watch the video, then read the transcript and make notes or highlights, and finally watch the video again.

It may take more time, but I find that it helps to hear the presentation a second time.

Do you happen to use the Courses tool? It shows the specific excerpt from the transcript that corresponds to that unit's video, so you don't have to use the TOC or search for the right unit.

Thanks for your reply. I see I should clarify a couple of things and apologize for not seeing the need to do so in my original post.

In my Mobile Ed layouts, the video and script tabs are in the same tile, so I wouldn't see the script panel scrolling to stay in sync with the video. But if the video and script were linked, whenever I paused the video and selected the script tab, the script would be in sync with the video when the script tab opened.
I was only asking that the video and script be linked at the TOC level of the videos, so the script wouldn't actually scroll line for line with what was being said in the video--it would simply make sure that as each new video started, the script would be positioned at the beginning of the script section for that video. That would eliminate the need to find the matching script segment in the script TOC--the link would keep adjusting the script so that when each video began, the script would be positioned at the beginning of the script section corresponding to that video. Yes, you might have to peruse a couple of paragraphs of the script to find what you're looking for, but you'd always already be at the beginning of the script for the current video.

In regard to your question about the Courses tool, no... I have not been using it. I did play with it a little when it first came out, but found it simpler to just use my own layout as I mainly just go through the videos, pausing along the way at times to read the script and mull things over.

No apology needed, Rick. I initially had thought you meant word-by-word sync within a segment. Thanks for the clarification!

One problem is that the video TOC doesn't correspond to the textbook TOC, so I could see how it would be challenging to find the right segment for a particular video, without expanding the textbook TOC.

It would be nice if the MultiView feature let you see the video and textbook side-by-side, but that's not supported. Link sets don't work either, unfortunately.

The Courses tool does insert the relevant transcript after the segment's video portion, which sounds similar to what you desire (at the TOC level). Perhaps you could incorporate that tool in your layout in the meantime, while you wait to see if a different option comes along?

You should probably post a suggestion, as there are some other forum members who also prefer to use their own layout instead of the Courses tool.

Thanks for the "Courses" tool suggestion, Petah. I don't know if that tool can be incorporated into a layout of my own design, but I'll look into it. In the meantime, I'll hold off on making a suggestion in UserVoice for this feature unless/until there are enough replies here to suggest sufficient interest from other users.

I personally love the courses tool (mostly for tracking everything I've completed and for filtering down the reading selections to just the text indicated). I have the courses tool in a floating window along with an instance of the Notes tool, filtered to a notebook for the course I'm working through. The only thing I don't like is a bug that prevents the New Note button in the Notes tool from seeing any selected text within the Courses tool (though you can select text then simply hit N or a highlight shortcut; the problem being you can't add an additional anchor based on selected text).

The Courses tool does indeed have some nice features. I've played with it but have found one fairly significant issue (personal opinion) that reduces its appeal to the point I don't think it will work for me. I.e. the tool splits the video and script screen horizontally (video on top, script below). I spend 98% of my Logos time on a 15 inch laptop. Since most laptops (including mine) have a wide-screen format, splitting the video and script horizontally, results in a very small video (constrained by lack of vertical space) and an unreasonably wide and shallow script area which requires far more horizontal eye movement than is comfortable/natural and also requires excessive vertical scrolling of the script.

So I've set up two side-by-side panels with the video resource opened in the left panel and the script resource in the right panel. Granted, I lose the benefits of the Courses tool, but this layout allows for a much larger video and a narrower script panel which allows for reading with a much more natural range of horizontal eye movement. I would probably use the Course tool if it allowed the user to have the video and script side-by-side rather than one on top of the other.
