Because of missing milestones and the difficulty of creating milestones (the things that allow you to find all the occurrence of and references to a specific paragraph of a specific document), I have suggested Verbum look into using the AAS for "minor" documents. Would this work for you?

There is one solution that is less than ideal but would at least be understandable. For recent documents has anyone looked into using the AAS number as the basis for a datatype?  See Acta Apostolicae Sedis - Wikipedia for a description. This would be like tying everything to a Congressional Journal. As the AAS is available online, it would be practical for people to keep a cross-reference of document name/AAS # for those things they use regularly ... in fact, scholars would likely learn their most relevant AAS numbers simply by use.

Edit: I just did a scan 379 resources currently have AAS references.

Sounds great. I would even suggest major sources also get the AAS added as a second datatype if they don't have it already. It is somewhat common that academic publications require the AAS citation, so having it easily available in Verbum will just make finding that all the easier.

    I'm quite sure they don't.

    I didn't know that.

It sounds like I should press Craig and Kyle on this ... a big step above using only a date as the milestones for papal letters.

That improvement would really pay off in the long term.

Thanks for the feedback MJ and Fr. Devin.  This is on my radar and I'll discuss with Kyle.

Question: since we don't have the AAS in Verbum and likely won't in the near future (not to say we never will, but it would require a lot of work and duplication of Latin church documents we already have) is it still worth having the references without the text itself?

You slightly misunderstood what I intended - I was suggesting that the texts that are in Verbum be given their AAS number for the milestone base; Fr. Devin indicated that all documents in Verbum (post 1908 or so) should be given their AAS number as journals require one use it. I did not intend to imply that phantom documents be given milestones.

Example: Verbum currently has <Apostolic Fathers Ignatius to the Smyrnaeans>; what I am proposing is that the AAS be used in a manner analogous "Apostolic Fathers" as the overarching data type for all post 19th century church documents in Verbum.

MJ's proposal of an overarching datatype would be my suggestion on this as well.

Whether it is worth your while is for your to consider, as I'm sure it would imply some work. But it would be useful information for many academic articles and papers, and might help you solve a difficulty of what to do with datatypes for lesser Magisterial documents. And it is independent of whether you actually add AAS to your library as a resource or not.

Thanks, Fr. Devin (and MJ).  I'll work with Kyle to see what integrating an AAS datatype might look like.
