Old Time Worrd Search User - New to LOGOS

Finally getting the hang to some of Logos 8.
After nearly 15 years using Quickverse, then Word Search.
Question: Have learned how to format and create a Personal Book, but how to I make sure it can be used and accessed by others? When I built a small book just now on Ruth, it compiled with no errors. I clicked on "UPLOAD:" but where does it go? How can I locate online. Just wanted to make sure it is public for all to see and use. Where can I find this book on my Hard Drive?
Thanks for your help.

Welcome to Logos and the user forums!
Glad to have you here.
Mark Johns said:Question: Have learned how to format and create a Personal Book, but how to I make sure it can be used and accessed by others? (...) Just wanted to make sure it is public for all to see and use.
That's easy: you share the book and some information about it exactly here in this forum. It's not possible to share compiled PBs in Logos format among users, instead it works like this: You share the DOCX file from your word processor, a title image if you like, and give us instructions on how to compile (e.g. as a bible commentary or as a calendar devotional).
Of course this presupposes you made the book yourself or use Public Domain or otherwise freely available content. We refrain from sharing PBs that duplicate existing books in the Logos catalog.
Mark Johns said:I clicked on "UPLOAD:" but where does it go?
This means that your PB now sits on a Faithlife server. If you use another desktop, or replace your computer someday, it will automatically downlöoad onto that machine, just as the Logos/Verbum resources do that you own. No other user will be able to access or use this file, PBs are currently private in the sense that only you have a license to the book you built.

OK. My book is just the beginning. It is only four(4) chapters. Each chapter is an outline of each chapter of Ruth, with files being named as follows:
Ruth Chapter One.docx
Ruth Chapter Two.docx
Ruth Chapter Three.docx
Ruth Chapter Four.docxHow do you attach all four files to a message or post so users can download?L

When in the Personal Book Editor, just add each file in order as I've listed them.
You can name it "Outlines on Ruth" or whatever you want to name it. These outlines
are by Mark Copeland at executableoutlines.com I formatted each file with about 4 levels of headings in Micorsoft Word. Saved each chapter as a separate .docx file.Question: I'm just a newbie at this, so don't laugh too hard. How do I make these files available, so anyone can use them in the Personal Book Editor? Tried to insert them in a POST and that didn't seem to work.

PS. I have been preaching for about 40 years. Got a lot of material I'd like to share.....

For others who may be interested in compiling their sermons or other material to be formatted for Logos Bible Software there is a document called "Logos Help" in the library. Look for assistance on Personal Books.
This link will open your library to the document and location of the help article. logosres:logos4help;hw=Personal_Books

Thanks Lynden, I will check it out.
I have already created a Commentary that currently covers 2nd Kings thru Revelation.
It is a very Extensive Commentary, but is in the format for e-Sword. Already over 10,200 users have downloaded it in the past year. Would love to convert it to the Logos Format. The bad thing is that it has taken me since Sept 11th, 2019 to create 2nd King thru Revelation.
It is about 100MB in size. It features Book Notes, Chapter Notes and Verse-by-Verse Notes. The source code is in .RTF format, via Microsoft Word. Any suggestions on how to easily convert to format for Logos Personal Books? Won't be hard to convert the .RTF code to Microsoft .docx, but will take a long time to insert all the Headings for the creation of a proper book in Logos.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I might also mention that the above commentary features all authors from the American Restoration Movement (1790 to 2020) Has authors such as David Lipscomb, JlW McGarvey, H. Leo Boles, N.B. Hardeman, Guy N. Woods, and Gus Nichols to name a few.
Thanks agaon.....

Calvi, thanks for the message and post. Have been preaching in the church of Christ for 40 yrs. My uncle, Ralph Starling was a fairli well known preacher in the church. If you get a chance, check out my old site at http://djmarko53.wixsite.com/churchbooks

You will find my restoration commentary for the Old and New Testaments at http://biblesupport.com
If you have any good ways to convert the commentary to Logos format, le me know. Would be willing to share the source code with you. It is in .rtf format and was created in Word and formatted for use wuth

Well, I see the Paper Clip and am giving it a try. so here goes....
There you are NB.Mick. The four lines(links) above are the four files in my little Personal Book. In the Logos Personal Book Editor, just click on add a file and add each of them as listed above. They should compile without any errors. This represents my 1st attempt creating a personal book for Logos. Think I will try a project much larger, now that I think I have this part of Logos figured out/
Let me know if the links work. They look a little strange as i am typing this,so let me know.....

It is in .rtf format and was created in Word and formatted for use with the e-Sword Program. I used the ToolTip Editor to compile it. Anyway, since the source code is nothing but ..rtf files created in Microsoft Word, shouldn't be hard to convert to .docx files. I'm not sure about all the formatting that was put into it. If one can successfully remove the formatted, then you should be able to add the correct Heading information for creating the proper Table of Contents for creation of a good Person Book. Like I said, let me know and I can supply you with the source code. Afraid that they will be too large to attach to a post on this forum.....

I'm not sure if Dropbox will still let you, but it used to be true that you could create a dropbox account, and upload a file, create a sharable link, and then you could post the link here to it.
As far as converting it to logos format, Logos uses .docx files - MS Word files - as the source to compile the books into Logos.
RTF should be able to be opened in Word, and then "save as" .docx.
You may or may not have some formatting to fix after the file conversion. Hard to say.L2 lvl4 (...) WORDsearch, all the way through L10,

Thanks for that suggestion. Will check it out.
BTW, I am working on an outline archive for the Book of Acts.
Eventually it will have 60 outlines or more. The following iis
what I have done so far, if you want to Compile it into a Personal
Book. So far it compiles without any errors. As I add chapter(s),
I will upload updates to this area of the Forums.Hope you like it. Here are the files:
0272.ACTS OF THE APOSTLES-Introduction.docx
0882.ACTS OF THE APOSTLES-Acts Chapter One.docx
4718.ACTS OF THE APOSTLES-Acts Chapter Two.docx
5023.ACTS OF THE APOSTLES-Acts Chapter Three.docx
6644.ACTS OF THE APOSTLES-Acts Chapter Four.docx
Just compile them into a personal Book in the order listed above. This will eventually be not only an outline archive, but also a
commentary on the Acts of the Apostles. Let me know how it works......0 -
Here is an update to the Outlines for Acts. Sorry, would have added more, but
since most of my books from WordSearch have successfully migrated to Logos
I have been spending too much time enjoying and learning more about Logos.
Miss my WordSearch, but love my Logos more and more each day!2260.ACTS OF THE APOSTLES-Introduction.docx
7217.ACTS OF THE APOSTLES-Acts Chapter One.docx
6740.ACTS OF THE APOSTLES-Acts Chapter Two.docx
5850.ACTS OF THE APOSTLES-Acts Chapter Three.docx
8547.ACTS OF THE APOSTLES-Acts Chapter Four.docx
1854.ACTS OF THE APOSTLES-Acts Chapter Five.docx
7268.ACTS OF THE APOSTLES-Acts Chapter Six.docx
7762.ACTS OF THE APOSTLES-Acts Chapter Seven.docx
If you have already downloaded any of these, you only need to download what you don't have.
Compile them in the Personal Book Editor in the order as listed above.
They should compile as is, without any errors.-Mark-

Thank for this link to the Restoration Library, Mark. At one time several of us were trying to get the College Press Textbook Series into Logos. It was put into "community pricing," however, it didn't fair too well. I have that complete set in paper and in e-Sword. I was able to get the Gospel Advocate in WS several years ago and it has been one of my favorite sets.
Thank you for the files that you've already provided and I'm looking forward to "many" more RM resources in the future.

There are a couple of ways:
1. Search for my name in the search bar. Everything I have put up, questions and all will come up. Most of my RM materials are 2017 or before. I teach world religions at a local university and in recent years I have put up quite a few eastern religion resources.
2. Search by author "Alexander Campbell" "Barton W. Stone" "Moses Lard" "David Lipscomb", "R.H. Boll", "Leo Boles", etc.. That will bring up quite a few. There are too many other RM authors that I've put on here to either enumerate or for me to remember, but they're there. You could also try "Millennial Harbinger" but I'm not sure that that will bring many hits. I have converted hundreds of RM resources, but most of the more obscure or very brief ones I have not put up here because while we are definitely present here in the forums, RM pastors and scholars are a distinct minority.
May I have your email address? I would like to correspond with you about some of the source documents you mentioned, but until either of us put them up as .docx files, I presume they are of no/little interest to the rest of the list.
Mine is cal {dot} habig [at] gmail [dot] com. If you just drop me a direct message there with your email, I can ask my spe4cific questions.
I have served with the independent Christian Churches for 35+ years. In recent days with the disintegration/demise of most of the institutions that held these churches together (North American Christian Convention, Christian Standard, the continuing closure of preacher training schools, [Cincinnati Christian College and Seminary among the most prominent] etc.) I have been reading more and more churches of Christ materials,,, although mostly older stuff.
Thanks.

In rereading your posts I saw something I missed last time. We may not put up anything that is still under copyright without the author's express permission. i have quite a few of Mark Copelands outlines as well for my personal use, but since they are copyrighted we may not put them up here without Bro. Copelands express consent. When I have tried to get consent from contemporary writers, sometimes they give it and sometimes they don't. I've never contacted Bro. Copeland about putting his stuff here

I believe it is more complex than that.
While copyright law is very complex (and I am not an attorney and am not giving legal advice) my thumbnail sketch of copyright law is that..
- All works published before 1924 are in the public domain.
- All works published since 1978 are copyrighted for the lifetime of the author plus 70 years. For works (like the lectureships) that are compilations, the copyright lasts for seventy years after the death of the longest surviving contributor
- For works published between 1924-1978 they may or may not be copyrighted depending on whether the copyright was renewed when it expired. That information has to be searched out from the US Copyright Office, however, there are databases online where one can go and search for that information.
If someone (esp. someone from Logos) knows additional or contramanding information, I would welcome a response.

I was recently given the college press textbook commentaries in print (1977 reprint). Since you have mentioned the Restoration Library, a few years ago I had a conversation with the guy behind the Restoration Library because they have lots of works on there since 1923. He confirmed what I have said above and said re: the works they have online either he has explicit permission from the author or publisher or he has researched it and found that the copyright was not renewed, As an example, I am attaching a screenshot of Don Earl Boatman's work on "Helps from Hebrews". On the copyright status he has ""Under Copyright, Used With Permission". That permission is extended to the person who puts that website together,,.NOT for me to go and download that resource and make a Logos docx out of it and share it. I can download it and make a Logos doc for my own use, but I can't share it. (I do that all the time for my own use).

Was this compiled as a monograph or Bible Commentary? I love these resources. I am always on the lookout for good restoration resources in logos, so thanks for sharing these. Carla

Cal,
Thanks for your information and responses.
I have already contacted Mark Copeland concerning this matter, via email with my request to
use his outlines to create Personal Book(s) for LOGOS 8. My request included the stipulation
that the Outline for each Chapter (say in ACTS) would have a Copyright Notice, plus a Link that
would take any user direclty to his website at http://executableoutlines.comUntil I hear from brother Copeland I do not intend to upload future Books (Old or New Testament)
until I hear back from him. In anticipation of his approval, I will continue my work on the Book of
Acts, but will hold off on any updates to LOGOS until I hear from him. Besides, I need to go back
and redo the first 12 Chapters of ACTS because I need to "beef up" the structure of the Outlines
that apprears in the "Sidebar" in the LOGOS program. That way, it will be more like some of the
other Commericially available Books in apppearance.I have already receive approval to use use outlines in my local congregation, for handouts and
for use on Overhead Projectors, etc. So, keeping my fingers crossed, and a prayer in my heart
concerning this matter. If brother Copeland grants his approval of my request, I will post such on
this forum so no one should question the legality. Until then, I hope to hear back from himi this
weekend on this matter.In Him,
Mark Johns

Here you will find the best material from the restoration movement, include E.M. Zerr's Complete Bible Commentary.
Check it out0 -
Cal,
I think that in inserting a (c)Copyright Notice in each Chapter would
normally require two(2) lines of text, but if I insert a link(hyperlink) embedded
in the Copyright Notice, it would only require one small line of text...Mark

Dear cshover
Being a newbie at LOGOS, I believe it was compiled as a monograph.
But I'm not sure yet what the difference is between a monograph and a Commentary.
Perhaps you could explain that one. I have spent years creating modules for e-Sword
Bible program. The editor in e-Sword compiles .RTF files which I create in WORD.Anyway, what is the difference in the two? In e-Sword Bible Commentaries have three
areas: Book Notes, Chapter Notes and Verse (or Verse-by-Verse) Notes. Reference
Books are more like monograph Books. However, I have only begun to compile a book
or two thus far and am not sure: What would be the special requirements for compiling
as a Bible Commentary? I haven't come across that ino yet and could use your help
unstanding what the advantages, etc. are in either one.... ThanksMark

Well, Mark Copeland has just granted me permission to Create books for LOGOS
using his outlines.Brother Copeland even went so far as to email me his outlines in WORD format to
make it easier to create Books for LOGOS 8.Here is what he said, in case anyone wants to know:
Greetings, Mark, you certainly have my permission to do as you requested. In fact, I already have my
Bible studies and sermon outlines in Microsoft Word documents which might save you some time.
I've attach a link below to download the compressed ("zip") file of my EO docs. Hope that helps. Each Book and/or Chapter must contain a Credit to brother Copeland that
reads something like the following:© by Mark Copeland (Permission Granted)
User must include ©notice in each ChapterBeing a newbie to LOGOS 8 I am still trying to figure out what the difference is
between a Monograph and a Bible Commentary. If you tell me what the difference
is, and where on the LOGOS site I can find the necessary info, it would be most
appreciated..... I will be uploading a updated version of Copeland's Commentary
and Outlines on Acts very soon.....Mark

I'll explain it the best I understand it. When compiling a book, it is important to tell Logos what type of book it is. Is it a monograph (such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer's "Ethics") or is it a commentary (such as your commentaries on Ruth).
The reason why this is important comes down to searches. If you search for a text and limit it to commentaries, (which you will want to do as your library grows and you have hundreds and thousands of resources to search through) then the resource you identify as a commentary will be included in the search. If not (the default is monograph) then it will not be included in the search. I am attaching a screenshot with the dropdown menu exposed on the compile form. This is true for other book types such as Journals, Dictionaries, Harmonies, etc.
Please don't ask why the menu has "Commentary" as well as "Bible Commentary". I have no idea. But just pick one an be consistent with it is my suggestion.
All the best,

Cal,
That makes it a little easier to understand.
Think I will try the Commentary option instead of the Monograph.
Even though the files are mostly Outlines, they are also Commentary
and would seem to make sense that to Compile using the Commentary
selection would be batter. Especially after you esplained that about
how a search works in Logos. Thanks again for the help. The commentary/outlines for Acts will be
posted soon. I am at chapter 20 of Acts. when that is done, I will try
to add Copelands additional Commentary and notes for the verses
and chapters. All together iit is or will be over 60 .docx fiiles.Brother Copeland sent the Acts Outlines to me in a Single .docx file,
so it might be easier to work with one file than a bunch of files. Thanks again for your hlep.

Here is about the fourth book I have created for LOGOS 8 in the last 7 days.
It is entitled "The Roots of Our Unbelief" (c)1948 by James D. Bales of Harding College (now University.
It has 13 chapters plus and Appendix. Deals with Apologetics and Unbelief. My dad used it when he
had the author for a Bible Professor in 1948 at Harding. Here is the book: 4403.Roots of Our Unbelief by J.D. Bales.docx

I cannot wait for you to publish all the Copeland outlines. It has been on my list to create personal books for myself from them for sometime now and I just have not had the time.
The other reason to format it as a Bible Commentary is that it will then show up in the Commentary section when you run a passage guide. Or any other guides that include the commentary section. I would really love it if there was an outline type so that the outlines would show up in an outline guide section, but Bible Commentary is the closest we have to include it in searches and guides.

Mark Copeland called me a week ago yesterday. Talked for a long time.
He has an interesting story to tell. He is also a LOGOS user. Sent me a
lot of his outlines in .docx format. They were done on a Apple MAC and
don't look the same on my PC. When I get the time will start on them.Take care,
Mark Johns
