Richard, does this very cool utility support Verbum? I'm getting an error message (running Verbum) that Logos is not running:

It should support Verbum as well. There are technical details, that both Verbum and Logos should export the same COM object. I'm not sure if that is true, but nobody has mentioned a problem with Verbum in the previous years, so it should be true. The problem might be that the object exported is not properly registered in Windows. Two suggestions:
1. Did you unzip the downloaded zip into a new directory, that contained not only the program that you executed but also another file?
2. You can try to register the COM object manually. You need to find the main program. With Logos, it is c:\users\<username>\AppData\Local\Logos\Logos.exe , so with Verbum it might be c:\users\<username>\AppData\Local\Verbum\Verbum.exe , but I'm not sure. Anyway, then you need to open a Run window (for example, press the Windows key and while it is still down press the R key), and type a command and execute a command there. With Logos, the command is %LOCALAPPDATA%\Logos\Logos.exe /register , so with Verbum it might be %LOCALAPPDATA%\Verbum\Verbum.exe /register . But if you found a different file name or directory, use that.

This file contains links to sermons, meditations, outlines, journal articles, Bible study guides, and more that do not appear in the Passage Guide. (Exception: some sermons now appear in the Passage Guide, but did not when I started, and I thought I would not remove them.) It is useful especially when preparing Bible studies or sermons on a certain passage, to find more ideas on the passage from your library that you can use.
To install the Index, download the Index Bible Studies.docx file, then use the Personal Books tool of Logos to create a new personal book. You can use whatever title you like, but it is best to set the type to "Bible commentary". On page 3 of this thread you can find a book cover that you can optionally use. The message https://community.logos.com/forums/p/65323/1093313.aspx#10933132654.Index Bible Studies.docx gives graphical instructions for this installation.
The index contains the books in my Logos library – there is a list of the included books at the end of the Index Bible Studies.docx file. Naturally, I cannot include books that are in your library but not in mine. However, it is possible to exclude books that are in my library but not in yours, which makes the resulting personal book easier to use. To create this personal index (Windows only):
1. Download and unzip the MyIndex.zip file.
2. There should then be two files in a directory. Start the Index Bible Studies.exe program, which will open Logos (if it is not already open), read the names of all the books in your library, and then create a file My Index Bible Studies.rtf in your Documents directory.
3. Open the My Index Bible Studies.rtf file in Word or another word processor and save it as a docx file.
4. Create a personal book from that docx file, in the same way as described in the previous paragraph setting the type to "Bible commentary".How can I do this on mac? I just finishing adding to Logos but there's so many resources that I don't have it's unusable. Fantastic idea though!

Unfortunately, the filtered version of it uses a technology that's only available on Windows (Richard clarified this back in 2014)

Do you also have a PC? I would think you could install logos on a pc, run the file, and then port the resulting document to your Mac. A lot of work though

In my post on September 9, 2019 (on page 9 of the topic), there is an alternative method for Mac to create a file with only books that you own. It is not updated (it will not have the books that I purchased in Logos 9 packages), but it will be a good start.

I tried several times to update the file to the newest one which is this is 6663.Index as it kept stopping about 1/4 of the way through compiling. Has anyone else had this problem?

I downloaded the file and installed it. I find that I have another file just like this one, that looks like something you put together, because I'm seeing a lot of the same books. Could that have been yours too?

There are different versions of the Index of Bible Studies, as I have added more books to it.For both of you, I'm not sure why it is not building. I will do some tests and see if I can work out the problem.

Richard, I tried updating with 48476 and it is doing the same thing where it seems to be stuck at 20% in the "converting" stage.

Bruce, just a remark from my side - I just compiled the 48476 on my SSD-driven Win 10 machine running L9 latest beta - unfortunately I didn't wait until NASB2020 had been fully indexed and so it looked like your screenshot, seemingly stuck (with no entry in the PBB-logfile). I just let it run and it finished after 40 minutes.
So I think all is well with the file and the PB compiler, it just takes long for a huge file with lots of links and milestones, especially if the machine is doing something else, like indexing, in parallel.

Thanks for the suggestion. I left it run for 30 minutes but maybe that was not long enough. I'm doing it again now and I will let it go for at least a few hours. Hopefully by then it will be completed.

Update. I let it run as you suggested and it compiled in about 40 minutes. I too have a SSD, so it makes me wonder how long it would take with a standard HDD.
For anyone else having this problem I would suggest that you just wait and be more patient than I was originally. [:)]

I was having a problem that didn't quite sound like any of the others described, but I wasn't sure. I ran it initially and got an error message that Logos was not running even though it was. After several attempts that issue mysteriously went away, but then it would act like it was working just fine, then at the end it would tell me that it couldn't find my books, even though it seemed to have found them. Finally I thought I would try the %LOCALAPPDATA%\Logos\Logos.exe /register and see if that helped, and it did the same thing, but that time my antivirus (AVG) popped up with a warning that the program was trying to change the file in my protected documents folder. I allowed a permanent exception, then ran the program again, and it worked! Thank you very much for this. This is a feature I was really wanting with Logos. I have maybe 10,000 books in Logos and I didn't seem to have any efficient and thorough method of searching by verse like this.

This file should do the job. The instructions for using it are the same as those previously in this thread for creating a personal index of Bible studies.
The Personal Book that is created will contain all the books you own of which Spurgeon is listed as an author, that is the books in the Library of Logos that are listed when you use the filter author:Spurgeon. This may or may not be what you are interested in. But it is easy for me to create a modified version of the program that can make the personalised Personal Book based on any filter string. If there is enough demand for such a feature, I could add an option to my program to input a filter string before creating the DOCX file for the Personal Book.

I discovered that instead of print/exporting the Library, I can do the same process with any collection and it works. So now I have exported a "Devotional" collection which is very handy as now I can be reading verse and then go see what devotional I have on it. Now I have gone and bought 7 new devotional books [:)]

EDIT:
I seem to have an issue that has me baffled, making the first "devotiona index" worked fine, now that I've gone and bought a bunch more books, downloaded them, added them to the same collection, and followed the same process, the end result is the exact same resources as before I got the new ones.
I've tried the process half a dozen times now and make sure that the XML file has the new resources. It seems that as soon as I use the program, the new rtf file doesn't have the new resources. I've tried making a couple of different collections, one with some new books and some old and only the old ones show up, and even one with only new books which results in a completely empty rtf file. I've tried reinstalling the program and just can't make any progress. Any ideas?
(I am on Mac by the way)

I'm not sure, but it might be that I don't own the new books you just bought, which means that I can not index them and that they are not in the Index of Bible Studies, neither my complete one nor the personalised subset.

Oh, I thought it was going by the XML file I created? So it goes by books inside the program that belong to you rather than what I upload in the file?
For example, I had 365 Days with Spurgeon Volume 1 which worked fine, but now I bought volumes 2-6 and they don't work.

What happens with the personalised lists is that my program that can be downloaded in this thread goes through my Index (which is incorporated in the program), checks every book against your library (on the Mac, using the XML file), and if the book is owned it is added to the personalised list. The books aren't actually indexed by the program; I create the index manually (using only the books I own, obviously), and the program creates the subset of the index with the owned book. In other words, the personalised list contains only books that belong to me and what you upload in the file.
In fact, I have Volume 1 of 365 Days with Spurgeon, but not the other volumes.

Some of us came from WordSearch and as such we have many of our books preferenced with WordSearch connotations such as:
"https://ref.ly/logosres/ws-22653ac812e44ebc9b65d2cfc627e236?ref=Bible.Jas"
I think the reason for this is to maintain licensing issues. Some of my WordSearch books were just replaced with Logos equivalent and some were not (best I can make out).
while most of your references are like: "https://ref.ly/logosres/hardsay?ref=Bible.Jas1.2"
Which means most or at least some of my books do not work.
I tried to work thru it to get WordSearch books to work... but I seem to be missing something...
I tried it with the url and with the xml but no luck.
What am I missing here?

The WS-xxxxxxxxxx resources have been created by Faithlife from book files they got from WordSearch. They were - some still are - not available in Logos before and thus they can't be part of Richards tool (which only contains books he owns/had access to and manually put into the PB source).
If you want those WS-xxxxxxxxxxx resources to be part of the tool, you'd have to arrange for Richard to have access to them and wait until he - if he likes to do so - puts them into the file. Alternatively you can create such parts by hand and merge them into the source file and maybe even share that here.

This is for WordSearch books.
Took me a few tries but I think I found it. Use the L4 link and it worked.
I haven't figured out yet how Richard found all the book indexes but I think there is a way. Could be a simple search program. But I'll work on that another time.

What would be even better would be if Faithlife took over maintaining this index (as they didfor denominations) so that it covers everyone's collections. Anyone who uses this index should feel obligated to vote for Index of Biblical Studies | Faithlife

The previous comments are correct: I need to have a copy of a book before I can add it to the index. I did own a few Word Search books, but not many. A couple of exceptions:
- some of the sermon collections were done by others, that I then included in my file (even though they are now included in the Passage Guide in the "Sermons" section, but that section of the Passage Guide did not exist when I started)
- I took the one month free trial of Logos/Verbum Connect and Now, to temporarily have a larger library, and indexed as many of those books as I could in a month, so they are included even though I don't own them now
How do I do it? When I get a new book, I go through it looking for discussions of passages. This can be a bit arbitrary. For a book of sermons or devotionals it is fairly easy, I just take the Bible reference of every sermon/devotion. However, for a theology book I usually just look for references in the table of contents. (I haven't actually read all these books to find the lengthly discussions rather than a passing reference.) For each entry to add, I click on the appropriate section in the Table of Contents pane, then click on the main pane and hit the CTRL+ALT+C key combination. (You need to check in the menu with three vertical dots in the top right of the pane that "Copy location as" is set to L4.) Then in my DOCX file I use a text search to find the Bible reference, work out where, amongst the lines with the same Bible reference, it should go (there is more or less an order I follow according to the type of book), and then type something like
Rom 1:1 qwe
then paste the reference from Logos (in this case, logosres:jamesdale;ref=Page.p_261), then type ]]
When I have done all the references in a book, I do a global search and replace to change all the qwe into
[[The Epistle of James and Other Discourses >>
or whatever the name of the book is.
If someone else indexes books that I do not (and have not ever) owned, I can insert them into my file. As I said, I have already done that with some sermon collections.

Great suggestion MJ. I'll vote for it! I would add.... that Logos just have a way of building the index file and then allowing us to edit it.
One thing that I have learned from what Richard did (and what Richard did is Amazing as it adds so much to the research capability of Logos)... is that I can build an index that is personal to me... for instance...
In the docx file... it can be set up such that it tells what the reference is about.... i.e "Ephesian Introduction" or "Outline of Ephesians". The actualy L4 link determines what resource and where in the resource the reference is ... i.e. "logosres:ws-0-771;art=40.a3" .
And the 3rd entry is actually where I tried a "Cross Reference Passage Guide" and it worked! Which leads me to think that any resource in Logos can be referenced as long as you can get a L4 link. I did this in a docx file and then compiled it and it works like a charm! So... once compiled... and I want to find an Outline of Ephesians ..... then I open up "Xnmans Index" and search for "Ephesians" and bingo... I think I'm being simplistic here but I see many things this could be used for....

I believe the process is the same for creating a Personal Book. You might google how to build a personal book in Logos.
I created a simple Word .docx file.... put info in it and saved it with a name.
Then I opened Logos.... clicked "Tools" then "Personal Books" to open that resource.
Then click "Add book" put in a "Title" then click "Add file" .... then search to find the .docx file you saved... open it, and it will load the .docx file ....
Then click on "Build book". Depending on the length of the .docx file and the processor and ram that you have... it may take some time.. But eventually the "Title" you gave it will show up in your "Personal books" list... then just click on it and enjoy.
It goes without saying..... that there are rules and such that the complier works with.... and Ihave not learned all them.... but when all goes well... your new PB will be available.
All changes (for now) are made in the Word .docx file.... and then you just "re-complile"...
Edit: As to adding resources to the .docx file.... see the posts before this one. I think that will help you.

Your search file to build the rft file does not do or work with files from WordSearch. And some people like me... which have about 80% (estimated) of my files from WordSearch... then when I do run the search engine my final .docx file is very small in comparison.
I don't think it's legal to"loan" you my WordSearch files.... to build the search engine with.... I would if I could. But I, like others have a binding agreement with Logos and WordSearch to use the files for me..... Maybe someone knows of a way?????
But a big "Thank You" for opening the door for me. I'll go through my library as I study and such and add my WordSearch files as I go.

I have began workinng on such a file. I may be slow though... as I am covered up to my eyelids as they say. But I will work on it. Maybe other WordSearchers can also work on this and we can share.... I'm willing. Suggestion.... let's call the file "WordSearch Index file.docx" ???
I find most of the guides, Factbook and Topical Guide do not search most of my WordSearch books.... which makes having an index as you came up with all that more exciting to me. So, it's a two fold process.... Open Logos... Open WordSearch... search in Wordsearch.... then open that book in Logos and search that book to find the place where the info is at, then build the url link.

You can use either the paper clip icon or the amber icon ... but others will each have their own copy. to make a docx file shareable you need to go with something like google.docs or maybe dropbox.

Ok... Here's a short simple START of a file for WordSearch files...
I learned a few things about this process.... 1. How to actually upload a file to Logos Forum. I had never done it before...
2. Some of the files in WordSearch were not converted into Logos files IF the version existed in Logos already. If the file is not converted because it already existed in Logos... then in actuality there are two different files to some extinct. For example... the Table of Contents may be different in the Logos file than in the WordSearch file. And there might be miniscuile differences in some wording within the files themselves. But to me ... it's ok. I think this may be because of version updates or something like that. The Meat of the file seems to be intact from what files I searched and looked at. I did not look at all my files... too many.
When it is a converted file from WordSearch... then the file in Logos will have a Logos L4 link starting with "ws-etc and etc. To verify the file is a converted WordSearch file, open the file and look at the bottom of the information page for the file. You will see the "ws-etc and etc".
This file is just a start.... I will update as I have time.... I hope other WordSearch convertees will also update it...all help is appreciated. I incorporate this file into My Files Index.docx which I use.
Again... Richard deserves all the "kudos" for his work on this... and I am thankful for what he did!

Thanks for this work. The format of the entries is good, but a few comments on the books.
1. You need to check my file for which ones I have already done. For example, "Hard Sayings of the Bible", "Marriage: God's Design for Intimacy" and "Connect the Testaments" are already included (because I own them) so you don't need to do them again.
2. I do not include Bible commentaries - those with "Bible commentary" in the Type column of the Library in the program. The reason is that it is easier to find what the commentaries say about a certain passage by using the Passage Guide in the Logos program rather than using my file. In fact, since the best way to use my file is to compile it as a Bible commentary so that it appears in the Passage Guide, it would mean that the commentaries would be in the Passage Guide twice. "Teacher's Commentary" should not be included for this reason. (I also own it, but have not included it for this reason.)
Also, if you are making this index file for your own use, you can of course included Bible names and chapter numbers. But I don't need them in order to include your file in mine, the Bible references are enough to tell me where to insert each entry. I would also prefer all the entries for one book before including the book in my file, so that I can note that it has been completely indexed and does not need to be considered in the future.

Thanks for the info. FYI - One of the reasons I put "some" commentaries in my file... is that when I run "Passage Guide" it is slow. With putting the commentaries that I want in the index file...then I click and bingo ... my info is at hand. I like quick.... [8-|]
2nd reason is that even with using "Passage Guide" I still have to wade through all the info it came up with to find info pertinent to the context of what I am studying at the moment. I have some commentaries I am getting ready to mark for deletion just because of their way out there teaching on some subjects.
I understand "collections" and use them... but even so... I look on the index file to be a "second hand" so to speak and the first place I go to to get info.
The beauty of the index file to me.... is I can put "books" in the file of what I want and not have to wade through "stuff" to get there. Once I find something in my studies that I think is worth "saving" I put it in the index file.... study and find once, be able to find forever - so to speak. I think that is efficent! lol
In the future.... I'll take what you suggest and try to make the file your way.

If you close the Passage Guide with all sections closed, then it will open with all sections closed. It will then open almost instantly. You can open each section as you want it so that the amount of information is not overwhelming. Close it when you are done. In the long run, you will be better off it you use collections to control the contents of concordance if its automatic divisions do not serve your needs than subverting the purpose of the Index of Bible Studies. Make a separate index if you really have need for one.- trust me, in the long run you are always better off working with the system rather than against it.

I highly advise against this. You'll never learn to defend your faith or to correct your errors if you censor your reading in advance. It is often a sign of a cult rather than a true church. I have a friend who at one time attended a church that required you leave your Bible at church -- if you read it on your own you might go astray. Yup, their pastor definitely had. [;)]

MJ ... I understand and appreciate your thoughts and the dangers of what I am thinking of doing.
With me, I have many, many, tooo many commentaries. And as you probably know, some of them just teach a false message. I am very careful to brand a commentary as being "a false teacher" but once I prove that they are, and I do work at proving it....then I don't use them.
Just like... there are over 38,000 denominations in the USA alone. I think we both would say they all can't be teaching truth, but that doesn't mean truth is not being taught by some. All of them do not follw the Bible... which is the standard for truth.
And learning of Biblical truth is a process... sometimes it happens that what I thought was false was not.... and what I thought was truth was not... simply because God allowed my understanding to grow... I am open to that.
But Biblical truth, just like mathematical truth or scientific truth or medical truth... can be proven. [8-|] As you might say... I am a "Sola Scriptura" person..[8-|]

The great thing about Logos is that you can restrict the commentaries automatically used while retaining those that you rarely use to access when useful or curious.
My approach to the number of denominations - all teach some truth but some have a much bigger slice that is true. I even allow for the largest percentage of truth to be held by two denominations that are split over human fraility rather than theology or practice.

I am getting this error.
Error finding your books. Probably Logos was closed. Please restart the program and do not close Logos.
It seems to get to the end and then gives that message.
