Can you upgrade without buying features or books?

I have logos 9. I have purchased feature sets and book sets from older versions as I needed / wanted them. I have also bought several commentary sets and dictionary sets. I know some people have 10s of thousands of books in their libraries but I have 1800 in my logos library and i would be shocked if i ever used a quarter of them. I still have a stack of books waiting to be read and I am not really interested in buying more book sets.

I want to upgrade to 10 mainly for the new layout and the ability to add physical books. What's the cheapest way to do that? When I look at those packages I just see so many books I don't want. I am pretty happy with the library I have and the additions I would like (certain commentaries) are not included in any of the sets.

So whats the most cost effective way to upgrade to 10? Please note, I am not asking for reasons to buy bigger packages. I am not looking for reasons to buy platinum packages. I am asking if you know how to upgrade to 10 without spending money on books I will not use.

You can buy feature sets without any books. You'll need the full feature set to get access to Print Library Catalog: https://www.logos.com/product/228476/logos-10-full-feature-upgrade

Thanks for the reply. Gonna think long and hard about $575 for that feature.

They'll eventually bring out a basic engine for the new engine that doesn't cost, minus the books and tools. But that's always after the launch. I think a few months after.

Verbum Now is, to the best of my knowledge, the most cost-efficient subscription-based way for you to get access to all of the features. (Don't be put off by the "Verbum" thing; the features work just fine in Logos.)

I am VERY, very, very disappointed with Faithlife. What a let down. This has to be the most underwhelmed new Logos in a long time and yet is the most expensive. $332.51 just to upgrade to the new features.

    Have they lost their mind?

My logos 9 starter upgrade was just $14.

I certainly don't share this view. I love Logos 10.

Are you sure that you are comparing apples to apples regarding cost? What is your cost for Logos 10 starter without features?

I remember at the launch of 9, Gold 8 to Gold 9 was about 350. Same for Gold 10.

For me the starter upgrade is $184. Definitely not worth it. I would like the sermon import and the offline book import but I don't want any of the added resources and to get those features I have to get one of the highest packages. Even with the feature upgrades you get loads of books or data sets I will never use.

    Good question. Thanks.

I was able to do a little digging which is not easy with the way Logos structures its upgrade.

Logos 10 Starter upgrade costs $51

Logos 9 Starter Upgrade cost me $14

After understanding the difference between the different upgrade levels I settle with the starter feature upgrade. I could have used the bronze level but I could not justify paying $110 more just for the new timeline feature.

To be fair, it is easy to understand what each level includes if you know where to look for but it isn't really easy to know where to look and no one seemed to be able to tell me when I call and did chat with sales. :(

Sadly, the ability to add new books is the most expensive level and I seriously doubt they will offer that in the free version.

They aren't stupid. I'm going to see if that 50% Pastor appreciation month discount will apply to upgrades and if so I will probably get a package high enough with these features. If not, I'll probably never get it.

Carl, I have exactly the same question. I want to upgrade but I just want the features I need.

It took me a while to figure it out. Once you do is easy to know what each upgrade level includes. But it is buried in the Logos website.

Go to this page and look under each feature.  IMPORTANT: Make sure you sort by "New and improved in Logos".

    https://www.logos.com/features

Under each feature, you will see a series of color squares. That tells you what Upgrade level includes that feature.

Based on my needs  I chose the Logos New features Starter. It cost me $51, which depending on Dynamic Pricing it may be more or less for what I paid.

Now, if you want to add the ability to enter your print books so Logo can "search" them, you will have to go for the most expensive upgrade.

    Hope that helps.

Yes, I think the Full Upgrade is your only option if you need all those features. Do call them because you can usually get the best deal that way.

I have Verbum Now subscription and you do get most of the same features. Although with the Logos 10 release one of the features not included is the Church History Themes dataset.

If you'd like to subscribe rather than to buy, you can subscribe to Faithlife Connect. With Essentials (149,90$/year) you always have all the features and get automatic upgrades to future versions + extra benefits as long as you won't cancel it. I've been a subscriber for years and I'm happy with it. My Logos was upgraded to v.10 today (and if I like I can buy a base package cheaper without paying for features).

Somehow certain features that people would think of as being part of the main software (update to new version is said to be free) are for some time already declared "features" and are part of "feature packages" for purchase...

So for that price, you are renting the features but you don't have to buy any resources, is that right?

Yes. That is the current price for a one year subscription. Users gain immediate access to all features. There are some other benefits as well, such as discounts on library purchases (if someone were to want books... I fall into that category).

I dumped Connect last year and moved to the L9 FFS since I needed to dramatically scale back on my services. I also dumped my Perks membership this year.

I was a beta tester for L10 (I can finally say that now), so with my coupon, the L10 FFS was about $64 out of pocket. It was worth that, but I wouldn’t have paid substantially more than that for it.

Honestly, during the beta test, I’ve been a little disappointed in L10 overall. I feel like the feature set this time around was weak. It feels more like a refinement of L9 and a “Snow Leopard” release for L10. That might turn out to be a good thing if L10’s speed and stability live up to its promises. It doesn’t hurt to take a pause from major features from time to time and perform under-the-hood tweaks. The L10 packages are overpriced for my needs (I don’t need large packages of books at the moment and am more targeted in my book purchases).

I went with the FFS mainly because I’m getting an Apple Silicon Mac next year and want to be Apple Silicon ready. My biggest disappointment in L10 was no additional feature gap closing from Wordsearch. I was really hoping for at least Lessonmaker, ZipScript, or both. If L11 doesn’t have at least one of those, I may wait for L11 Basic.

On the flip side, I’ve already pre-ordered Accordance 14 since it looks pretty exciting. I was hoping for a little more of that excitement (or more) in L10.

I did enjoy the L10 launch video though. It reminded me of an Apple event and was plesant to watch. Good to see that Mark has upgraded to a full beard (which reminds me, I need to update my profile pic on here since I’ve had a beard for a little over a year now. Mine’s about the same length/style as Mark’s).

    What is FFS?

I signed up for the faithlife subscription. If they release a new version of Logos every other year this is cheaper. Like I said in my original post, I don't want any of the books the sets offer. I am pretty happy with my library and buy select books as needed. Worst comes to worst I cancel my subscription and I guess they roll me back to 9? I don't know. But this seems to fit the need for now.

edit: is it FFS full feature set? If so, I was going to got that route but it would have cost me $474 which is more than three years of the subscription. Of course you own it but I will get any updates

Weird that both of our comments got deleted. I went the faithlife route because it is cheaper over the next 3 years after which time there will probably be a major release. But who knows?

No, you would stay under L10, only you would loose the 10 FFS (Full Feature Sets)

i bought the full feature set for 168.   I suppose that is because of dynamic pricing.  I did not want any more books.

I added a Silver Package and a Bronze, rather than just pick up the Full Feature Set. Most of the Features I wanted were in Silver, so I was able to add a few resources that had more value to me than 20 plus more interlinear versions. (I can only use so many of those at a time)

Having used the Print Library Feature during testing it was a nice feature, though the fact that it is also in some way a Marketing/Sales tool for Logos - I'd have though it would be in the base features included in any purchase. So that may be the one feature I miss from the Full Set, but it's not worth the $50 listed value, nor the almost $90 that I'd have to pay for the Full Feature Upgrade from Silver. IMHO

Yeah it’s the Full Feature Set. I started on Logos Now (the predecessor to Faithlife Connect) under Logos 6 and stayed through Logos Now/Faithlife Connect through Version 9. I dumped Connect and Perks since I had to scale back on services. The cost to upgrade to the Logos 9 Full Feature Set for me was about $180. The cost for the Logos 10 Full Feature Set was about $164 for me, but I got it for about $64 with my beta test coupon. I likely wouldn’t have paid $164 for it. I would have waited for Logos 10 Basic. I mainly did Logos 10 Full Feature Set to ensure I’ll have full Apple Silicon Support when I go for an Apple Silicon Mac next year. If Logos 11 doesn’t have at least Lessonmaker or ZipScript or both (carried over from Wordsearch), it’ll likely be a hard pass for me.
