Lexham Research Commentary Update?

Has anyone heard an update on some of the new volumes for the Lexham Research Commentary set? The last I heard was they were planning to have Daniel and Ruth out before the end of 2020, but it looks like that has been delayed.

Jon, let's blame 2020. [:D] But seriously, my project plans did not pan out like planned last year. I'm not sure anyone's 2020 went as planned though. I have begun editorial on Daniel and Ruth and will have them ready as soon as possible. They aren't my only projects to finish this spring (Geographic Commentary is also on my plate), so I don't want to commit to a date and disappoint but I'm hoping they'll be ready by the end of the first half of 2021.
As far as the series goes, Luke should be ready for editorial later this spring, and 2 Peter is due this summer. After 2 Peter, the author is doing Jude. Matthew is being written, and I'm looking for authors to continue the series.

Let's hear it for job security.[8-|] Thanks Doug. It is so easy for us to take all of FL for granted. I sure don't anymore. Every time I use Logos, I am reminded of all the faithful labor that enables all these resources to be at my fingertips.

Latest update on this series—I have authors lined up for the rest of the New Testament volumes. Luke and 2 Peter have been submitted and are in my editorial queue. Both look like substantial contributions to the series that I think everyone will be happy with. Daniel and Ruth are ahead of them in the queue though. Plans are to turn to this series once I get some things wrapped up related to the Geographic Commentary and the Context Commentary projects.

Any chance we’ll see any of these (Daniel, Ruth, etc) before the end of the year?

I'd like to say yes, there's a chance, but it's unlikely either Daniel or Ruth will ship to customers by the end of the year. It's possible Ruth will be close as I hope to give it my full attention later this month. But after my first edit, its progress will depend on others in editorial and digital resource production having time to do their part. I don't think there's enough time for everything to happen by end of the year, though, even if I finished my work today. (There's copy editing, resource tagging, pre-pub notification period, etc., to account for.) I should soon be able to give this series more attention for a while to get caught up on the ones that have been submitted but not edited yet. So you can expect some of these to be released in the first half of next year.

FYI, eight new volumes in the Lexham Research Commentaries have been posted for pre-order. These volumes have all been contracted and are currently in the writing process. We won't have an estimated release date until a manuscript is turned in. A portion of a ninth volume — Revelation — has also been contracted but we'll hold off on posting that one for pre-order until the author commits to the entire book.
With Revelation pending, these new volumes will offer complete coverage of the New Testament. Finding authors to complete the Old Testament is our next priority.

are pre-order prices better than just waiting for the actual release?
Bob
Yes. For some reason the last two posted above with logos.com links, 2 Peter and Jude, don't show the discount, but the volumes in the post above with lexhampress.com links do. The discount for Pre-publication/pre-orders is around 30%, give or take 3%.

So the first half of the year has come and gone but still no Ruth or Daniel yet
. Any update on the status of these, Doug? I'm starting to worry that they will once again get pushed back into the following year.

LRC Daniel has had a first edit. LRC Ruth's first edit is roughly halfway done. I did not get time to devote full attention to this series late last year and early this year as I expected. I still hope to get Ruth and Daniel done this year though, but at a certain point, I'll be waiting in line for other groups to have time to do their part to get them released.

I really could’ve used the volume on Ruth right now. I’m good though; Daniel Block’s lectures and his commentary on ZECOT really have become my main source for putting lessons together whenever the time comes for me to teach Ruth in a couple of months. Also, the Story of God Bible commentary has some good insights from a woman’s perspective, since the author is a female.

Hi Jake
Since your post, a year ago, I have got no status information. Any news on the preorders you posted?
Thanks for your information.
I bought the whole ECC. Am I going to get the volumes offered on presales as they are released?

A first edit and content review has been done for LRC Daniel, Ruth, Jude, and 2 Peter, but all are waiting on my review. Unfortunately, my 2022 priorities were changed due to L10 work that is taking much longer than planned (the Lexham Dictionary of Church History [LDCH]) and transitions in the Lexham team. I hope to get to LRC Daniel and Ruth in the first part of the year, but I need to finish LDCH first. I am no longer going to try to give general predictions of when any content will get released as things never go according to plan; however, when these reach the point where we assign an actual release date, I'll try to remember to update here with that. But this series is among my top priorities for 2023, mainly LDCH, then LRC and Context Commentary. I know these are things everyone is waiting for. We're doing our best, and I hope the pace picks up this coming year because I'm expecting more LRC volumes to be submitted.

Jon, looking back at this thread, I see that I've been pleading "just a little longer" for the last 2 years or so, and I'm sorry to do that to you again. I really did expect to get these done a long time ago. One reason for delay on Daniel and Ruth was that we added engagement with more commentaries that came out since the initial submission. That work was done earlier this year, but then I was assigned to manage the LDCH reference project, aiming to release in L10. So LRC took a back seat. LDCH was not supposed to take this long, but for a variety of reasons, we've had delays (large reference and commentary projects often do). I'd also expected to release more content for LCCOT, but it has also not gone according to plan. I have 3 commentary projects and a dictionary going right now in addition to editing a handful of Lexham books. All are making progress, but the dictionary and the print books have been prioritized, slowing progress on the others. I try to be transparent about these things; I feel like I'm just making up excuses, but there's a lot to do to get these resources ready for publication, even if it's only a digital version in Logos.

Thanks Doug, I appreciate your response and your transparency, even if it wasn’t what I was hoping for. Sounds like you have a lot going on and I’m grateful for the work that you do.

I recall ponying up in advance for Lexham resources and I really didn't mind doing so. Maybe we should all just put Doug and the Lexham team on our prayer list that God would enable them to manage their workloads in the best possible way. It's a big burden but it's all done one piece at a time. And God needs to sustain them each and every day. 2023 is just days away and I think I am going to start early in my prayer for these folks.

Yes, there's a chance that I'll get LRC Ruth and Daniel out this year. I'm hesitant to get your hopes up though. Let's say it's a 60-40 chance. It's probably more like 70-30. I've also enlisted help with some NT volumes, so I expect to get at least two or three of those out by December. These are a fair amount of work, and when I get optimistic about something going smoothly, that seems to be when things stop going smoothly. But I can tell you that they are a high priority for me for the second half of the year.

Jude and 2 Peter are closest to being ready. The third is TBD depending on author submissions.

Looks like Luke and 2-3 John have been changed from "Ships Q4-2023" back to "In Production". Luckily Ruth, Daniel, Jude and 2 Peter still say they're shipping in Q4.

Luke's not going to get done in time for this year's release. Jude and 2 Peter are in revisions and editing. I just received the submission for 2–3 John, and there's still an outside chance we can get through it in time.

Quick update. Getting some of these volumes finalized has been my priority lately, but it is looking like they will ultimately release in early 2024 due to the digital production time needed once I'm finished. I hope to hand off the content still this year, but it's taking longer for me to finish the editorial than I'd planned. Expect to see Jude, 2 Peter, Ruth, Daniel, and 2–3 John by Q2 next year (probably with some in Q1). Later next year, I should have a few more in the editorial process, too, depending on when writers turn things in.

LRC Jude, 2 Peter, and 2–3 John are closest to being out of editorial and should be released this year still. Ruth and Daniel are next on my list after those. There are some other volumes due to be submitted by authors this year, too, so I hope to get more things out next year depending on what comes in.

Really disappointed that LRC Jude, 2 Peter, 2–3 John, Ruth and Daniel, all of which were showing a release of 5/31/24 on the prepub page, have now been pushed back to a date of "Q4 2024." That doesn't bode well for any of them actually getting released this year, and is frustrating that they they were pushed back yet again, only a couple weeks before their scheduled release date.

Considering everything on the plate of the Lexham editors, I view this as a minor setback. Translated this likely means they will dribble out when they are done. I would love to see them sooner since I paid for them ages ago but I once worked as an editor and know what happens that most readers never see.

That doesn't bode well for any of them actually getting released this year, and is frustrating that they they were pushed back yet again, only a couple weeks before their scheduled release date.
Considering everything on the plate of the Lexham editors, I view this as a minor setback. Translated this likely means they will dribble out when they are done. I would love to see them sooner since I paid for them ages ago but I once worked as an editor and know what happens that most readers never see.
What I'm saying is, shouldn't the Logos team have realized that these 5 volumes weren't ready for release a little sooner than two weeks before the scheduled release date? They clearly aren't even close to being ready if they are getting pushed back to Q4. It gets our hopes up that they're finally going to be released after years of waiting when there's a date next to a resource on the prepub page, only to see it get removed at the 11th hour.

My apologies. I lost track of when we'd moved the release date to, so I'd neglected to have it updated sooner. The current placeholder release window is intentionally pushing things later than I hope to need, esp. for the NT ones. The OT ones aren't as far along in the process, so they may need more time. The release date also depends on how long resource production takes once I hand over the files. I know these are continually pushed back. It frustrates me as well. I can't guarantee something else won't come up to cause delays, but the series in in my short list of top priorities. Once I finish with my current priority, I will switch to focus on moving the Historical Books volumes for the Geographic Commentary ahead to their next stage of production. After that, LRCs will be the focus. Hoping to be on to LRCs by the end of June. We will all be much happier when they are completed.

Thank you Doug! Will the LCC follow after that?

It's on the list. I don't want to set expectations too far out. Two volumes of Geographic Commentary and five of LRC are going to keep me busy for a while. Plus I have several other projects in the mix yet. My backlist is sadly quite long. I need to find some concentrated time to focus on wrapping up some of these things. LCC will be a priority after some of these others have been cleared.

Haha! I hear ya, and my apologies for venting. Thank you for the update and I do appreciate your efforts. Glad to hear that hopefully they may come out sooner than Q4.

These have been bumped again...which is beyond frustrating. For weeks they were showing a 10/2 ship date for quite a few of these, Luke, Daniel, Ruth, 2-3 John, etc. Suddenly, as of today they are back to "in production"....is there a way to avoid continually getting our hopes up on these, only to move them last minute?

I think the system must set dates when they put them in there as I had another non-lexham book that was scheduled to ship yesterday. I knew it wasn't going to because the hardback isn't out yet but I don't think it is nefarious in any way. I do agree it can be frustrating.
Doug is doing his best and I'm surprised he isn't getting much help to finish these projects. L11 will probably come out soon and resources like the LCC that were sold in L10, are still unfinished.
Pray for Doug

No! Is not like you will use them right away, anyway. You’ve survived without them this long, waiting til Logos 14 won’t hurt your feelings more, will it? 😂😂😂

My Logos library is passed to my kids in my will, and if these delays keep happening, it will be them enjoying the LRC volumes...or maybe my grandkids yet to be born.
