Mark Barnes: Question on Subscription Tiers

I have brought this up in a couple of threads, but I think it gets barried in the discussion.

Concerning the three subscription tiers:

My only concern with subscriptions is still with the tiered system cost vs what I already own. I would want the academic tier for whatever feature sets it will include; however, I assume it will also come with several academic resources besides the feature sets, which will be baked into the monthly cost. Chances are, I already own most, if not all of the academic resources to be included, so I will be paying again for resources I already own, and I'm paying the same price as someone else who doesn't own any of those resources.

At least this is my understanding. Can you add any clarity to this?

Have a basic pick list of what we want. E.G. a subscription tier for Academic features with or without resources.

We pick what we want and pay accordingly.

Disclaimer: I have not seen the exact list of licenses included in the various tiers. However, I hope I can give you some clarity on your question.

We are thinking about subscription tiers as access to the software features and platform (very similar to "feature sets" of the past).

Meanwhile, the plan is for libraries to remain purchased and licensed the same as today (transactional, permanent licensees).

Because features are powered by some books/datasets, there may be a small number included in the subscription merely to power the features. There is no dynamic pricing on those, however they are not significant contributors to the subscription price so it's a bit moot.

If there sufficient customer interest, we may offer subscriptions to libraries in the future but that isn't a focus right now.

Are you saying that the current 430+ books with Early Start will be drastically reduced? I trust there will not be the issue with minimal access-only datasets of the past where Person/Place/Thing was included but Bible Referents was omitted.

I just wanted to swing back around to this, as it sounds like we are still talking about the final products having 200-500 books included to enhance functionality. It's hard to fathom that these resources aren't figured into the pricing model spread out across the subscriptions in some way.

There has to be some material difference between a subscription where I own all 500 resources vs. one where someone owns 0 of the 500 resources.

I'm ultimately not worried about it, but I think this is something that needs to be explained in more detail early on; otherwise, I think this will present stumbling blocks for subscribers at launch.

[Y][Y] Faithlife Connect/NO RESOURCES already exists (although it is being deprecated) Logos figured this out when the LN moved to FC and there was an uprising on increased fees, principle still remains.

The price of the subscriptions is mostly focused on the included features. We've added books into the subscription for two reasons. Firstly, so that new customers can use a subscription without needing to also commit to buying a library. And second, as a perk for existing customers who might benefit from some of the books that are included.

Thanks Mark, and I know you are jumping from thread to thread, so I wanted to post your response to another thread here for those who aren't reading all of them, which I think is more clear:

We're planning to have two separate price tracks, one for new customers and one for L10 owners. The tracks are priced independently; they have no fixed discount percentage. You will be able to stay on the track you start on, but – as with all subscriptions – the price of the subscription could change over time. If that were to happen, we would decide any price changes on each track independently of those on the other track.

This is closer to answering my concerns. I'm good with this and then will wait and see! Thanks for your willingness to face such questions!

I clicked on the email that Logos sent me yesterday and I don't see any discounts. I already have Logos Pro (early discount), I am a Connect Essentials (no library) subscriber, I also have an Academic discount currently in place and I own Logos 10 with pretty much all the books in this tier along with the full feature sets. Donovan, you're possibly seeing the bug Mark addresses below.... I allowed the trial to expire a few days ago and I can see the discounted prices, seems that those subscribed are having the issue...

So, how come only a few have been offered the $12.99 Logos Max subscription early adopter’s price? I, too, own the L10 full features set and previous versions full features sets also. I got on board with Logos Pro to support the new subscription model, but now it turns out others are getting “early access” to a higher tier subscription for less.

I apologise. There is a bug which we are actively fixing that means that existing early access subscribers see the full price rather than the discounted price. In Mark’s original announcement of the new subscription models, Mark stated:

”If you subscribe to those products, we’ll contact you later in the year to explain how you can painlessly switch to the new subscription. Until then, we recommend keeping your existing subscription to ensure you don’t lose any perks, features, or books. First of all, you have incredible patience and I commend you. I think you have done a wonderful job explaining things, even though you have had to do so multiple times.

My situation:

I am a subscriber to Logos Connect and also Logos Pro (early access).

I also own the Logos 10 full-feature set.

I can see the available new subscription options on this page:

I hear the call to be patient, but as details for others unfold, I would like to see some resolution or at least a clear statement of what will be upcoming for long term Connect users.

I also would like more clarity on the differences between Pro and Max. Currently, they look very similar, but will there be a larger distinction in the area of language studies in the near future? While I am a pastor, I retain interest in languages as it relates to pastoral study (not academic).

This is a problem we currently have with Starter, Bronze, Silver, etc.

But subscription does give us an opportunity to add indicators into the help file, perhaps to show which features are available in which tiers – assuming we're able to keep it up-to-date, of course.

All the books included are listed at the bottom of the page. You can see them by clicking on "Included Books".

For example, Max includes more Greek/Hebrew grammars and technical commentaries.

I think you were probably excluded because you already had a subscription. We're not yet geared up for upgrades/downgrades between tiers.

Today, I've raised these with the person responsible for the migration plans. I am genuinely sorry I can't give you more details right now. It's not the fault of the person responsible – there are lots of moving parts, and many decisions are dependent on other decisions and sometimes on writing code to support different scenarios. That's our problem, not your problem, and it's not an excuse. But I am pushing for answers ASAP on behalf of customers like you.

I see the pricing to be problematic for users with no discount. If they do qualify for the Legacy Fallback License, what's to stop them from cancelling their subscription and going on the discounted track after two years? If they do not qualify, they are paying a lot of money to never gain ownership of any features. Why not have only one payment track with the Legacy Fallback License being an optional add-on? Obviously those who already own the full feature set would automatically qualify for it, while users who do not would have to purchase it in addition to the subscription.

Thanks Mark. That satisfies me for the time being. You indicated in another thread that most Connect users should qualify for the discount. I have the Pro discount, so it would follow that I should get the Max discount as well. So assuming this will be so, I will be very happy. When it actually occurs is less important. And with only a $2.50 a month difference, it doesn't matter if initially Max doesn't differ much from Pro, I'm all in. The entire cost is less than the typical TV streaming offerings and way more useful.[:D]

My overall take is that with the discounted prices, this subscription rollout is a really good deal. I liked Connect and this beats that. And if it provides a predictable revenue stream for Logos, it is a win-win. I'm all for being part of a healthy company with my massive investment already in the company.

Sentence Diagramming
Syntax Searches and Clause Visualizations
Ancient Literature Dataset
Grammatical Relationships datasets

Morph Query Engine
Online Manuscripts Dataset
Original language editions of the Septuagint, Vulgate, Dead Sea Scrolls, etc.

Thank you, Mark. That makes sense. I suppose it was the bug of early access subscribers not being able to upgrade at the discounted price that thrust the non-discounted pricing into focus. It seems to me that the current (non-discounted) pricing is quite steep for the pool of users Logos would attract. I would hope that subscriptions that do not include eventual ownership will end up being cheaper when they officially roll out in the Fall in order to attract a wider user base.

With the current pricing, a customer will have to pay 350 per year for the full feature set and will have ownership of no features to show for it. If indeed the legacy Fallback License is included, after two years, they will have ownership of just as many features as their peers who are on the discounted track. No doubt this will be problematic, as they will not be happy to pay over twice as much for the same product. If the License is not included, that would be a massive price for only renting the features. I'm simply saying this area will need some attention before the final rollout in the Fall. We've been wrestling with this dilemma for some time. We want to support customers who've spent a lot of money on our existing licenses and ensure that no one feels their investment wasn't worthwhile. At the same time, we also want to be fair to new customers. There are no easy answers.

Check the discount page again. It appears like the bug has been fixed. The MAX discount rate is available for those who have the Pro version. I am a Connect subscriber without ever purchasing Logos 10 by itself.

Yes, it seems fixed. Now for those who have L10, Faithlife Connect and were early subscribers, this thread seems to indicate there is a further discount we are still waiting for.

Mark Barnes - are there more discounts for those of us, like me, owned L10, subscribe to FC, and am an early subscriber to Logos Pro?

Also, will there eventually be a 2-year subscription option anytime soon? I prefer to do that.
