New Feature: E-reader / E-ink support

The Logos app works on Android e-ink tablets like the onyx boox and likebook models. It would be great to be able to turn off at a minimum the page turn animations, and ideally as much animation and scrolling as possible to work well on these tablets.

  • Yes!!! I often WANT books in Logos, bit I get them for Kindle instead because reading in the kindle app or on a computer screen is annoying. I bought the Onyx Boox Leaf 2 hoping to be able to change this trend, and it's -better- but not great because of the page turn and animation experience.
  • FYI, this is also an accessibility concern, and only on Android, as Apple won't allow remapping of volume buttons (as far as I know. I left the walled garden years ago).

From the Logos/Faith life end, a simple solution would be to tie the page up/page down keys (or volume button keys, as the Amazon Kindle app does) to the page forward and page back in the Android app when not in scroll view, which would enable the functionality requested.

Additionally, an option (in non-scroll view) to suppress the side-scroll animation would be immensely helpful, as it doesn't render well on e-Ink devices.

FYI, I'm also working the angles with Onyx to build in support for the current state of the Logos Android app (via side buttons triggering a swipe or similar). Onyx, being a much smaller company, and thus somewhat more responsive to simple, yet niche, requests, the chances might be greater of finding a workable solution from their direction.

Also, perhaps this can get marked as an enhancement scoped to accessibility. As a dev myself, I know the pieces necessary exist within the app (page turn functionality, etc), but they just need to be wired together.

In order of priority this should be the order of the work items:

    1. Page turning using volume button or page up/down.
    2. Suppression of animations.

Both of these would be great for enhancing accessibility as well.
  • I only started using Logos today and this was one of the FIRST things I wanted to do! It would be much easier on the eyes, if the page would skip to the next, rather than having the animation (using boox note air 2 plus). Full stylus support for highlighting text, rather than using the touch screen input, would be awesome as well!

Hi Nicholas, actually there are quite a few eink devices on the market that are compatible with Logos now, but the ones you listed are closed devices so Logos can't do anything about those. Check out Onyx Boox, which makes open Android based tablets. I've been using their devices for a few years now, and they are very good (Max Lumi, and more recently, Nova Air 2). The A4 format devices are nice for 2 column reading, or having a commentary linked in a side panel when studying at a desk. Personally, I prefer the smaller Nova Air2 since it's easier to hold and carry around, so I end up using that the vast majority of the time. I think it's the perfect size for most reading. It's also a lot cheaper and has a faster refresh than the first gen Lumi.

I'd also recommend checking out the Boox Tab X and Tab Ultra , with their faster GPU based refresh technology. Possibly might be the best eink devices on the market for Logos currently.

In the mean time, please vote on these items to help get optimizations for eink devices prioritized!

  • I would seriously invest much more in the logos universe if page turn animations could be turned off. Bonus if volume buttons could be used to scroll.
  • This absolutely. It would be great to be able to turn pages with volume buttons as well, as the Kindle app allows.
  • @David Morton  This is what Logos needs to understand. It's in their best interest to prioritize this feature if they want to get book sales from us. Make it Kindle compatible (which may likely not be something Kindle allows) or create your own Kindle-like Device that works flawlessly with Logos.
  • I've read off of lit screens for too long as a longtime Logos power user, and I've invested untold thousands in Logos books. My eyes need an eink device, which shouldn't be too hard now that we're in 2024.
  • Logos - please support ASAP!
  • I am buying more books for Logos to build up my library.  I would love more support for eink devices!
  • I would love that too. I want to read more in Logos but an iPad or PC is not good for my eyes. Would love a nice experience on an e-reader. If that could be fixed. Just a smooth page turn would do the job already.

I agree, a very essential functionality to be able to read logos on e-ink readers! Also not very complex or difficult to implement. Talk about low hanging fruits. Also with the new subscription model it should be no problem to fund this feature!
  • I don´t think this feature with disabling the animation, would be such an effort to provide. It would be really great, if this could be realised.
  • Kobold eReader support please!
