Explicit References to External Texts in the Bible

Create a data set and Factbook resource that identifies all extra-biblical texts explicitly referred to in the Bible and the occasions when this occurs (with their metadata) in the Bible, including the Deuterocanon.

This dataset would include the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel, the Book of Jashar, the Epistle to the Laodiceans, etc.

@sean-boisen-11 I'd like to see all of them collected together in a single list that shows where they are (or *maybe* are) referenced and has just very basic information about each of them. Then there would be links to the full Factbook articles, including the ones you linked me to, for further study.

Right now, since I know of (e.g.) the Epistle to the Laodiceans, I can look it up by name. But if I didn't know its name, or if I wanted to find out if there were others like it, I don't think I could really find out--at least not quickly or easily--without going online and ending up at Wikipedia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-canonical_books_referenced_in_the_Bible ). Even the Factbook's article "Citations of Non-Canonical Writings in the NT", which seems promising, turns out to be useless (because empty), and I can't find an OT equivalent.

Thanks for sharing that there are factbook articles on external texts, Sean! That was very helpful. I'd like to see this idea expanded further than the original requester, though. One thing that I've often wanted (and at times worked on trying to create) is a "true cross-references" set of cross references. The Bible is, like any good scholarly work, full of citations, quotations, and allusions both to internal texts in the anthology, and to external texts (whether still extant or not). I dream of having a resource that lists all of these. But what would be even more wonderful, because it's possible in Logos, is to then have that resource linked to your bible, so that you could see while reading "oh, this is a quotation from Deuteronomy, and has also been mentioned in these other 3 passages of the Bible." If you do work on a list of external references, I'd ask that you pretty please consider going all the way, and help the average reader find ALL the references. It shouldn't blow the average Bible reader's mind, for instance, that when "the armour of God" is referenced in Ephesians 6, it's alluding to the fact that God Himself put on a breastplate of salvation and helmet of righteousness in Isaiah 59 as part of what He dressed in for battle, and that there's a context for Ephesians 6 in Isaiah. Nor should it be something that a Christian needs to study 10 years to stumble across and learn that the two greatest commandments come from the Shema in Deuteronomy and Levitical law. Yes, pretty please do create a really useful resource/dataset/cross-reference which shows us just how wonderfully scholarly the Bible truly is in its Citations, quotations, and allusions! You Logos folks are great! I'm so glad that you've worked so hard to provide us with the many wonderful tools you already have at our fingertips!

I believe that the best thing would be to create a database that includes explicit and indirect citations and conjectured allusions (by some scholars). The quote is not always correct, but it is possible. This could be cataloged too.
