Sermon Builder Bugs in 39.0

Here are a few things (bugs?) I noticed in the Sermon Builder over the weekend. Some might be intended. Others might need to be corrected. (I am using Logos 39.0.408 and Windows 10 Pro 22H2)

  1. Typing two hyphens no longer autocorrects to a dash.
  2. The formatting keyboard shortcut Ctl+Alt+Shift 0 (zero) no longer returns the selection to the default Sermon Builder formatting.
  3. Selecting text in the Sermon Builder and then using the top menu formatting options causes funny text selection results after Logos applies the formatting style. To reproduce:
    1. Select text in a sermon document.
    2. Use the top formatting menu to select a color.
    3. Click any where inside the Sermon Builder document in order to close out the formatting panel popup. The red arrow shows where I clicked. And you can see that rather than deselecting my original text selection, Logos has now extended my text selection to include additional text.
    4. Then, you must still click one more time inside the Sermon Builder document to get Logos to release the text from being selected.
  4. Backspacing a line of text immediately following a Scripture verse causes the line to become part of the verse.
    1. Here's an example.
    2. Here's what happens. Performing this action in the previous version of Logos would have deleted the Scripture verse (which was my intention in the moment originally).
    3. Realizing my mistake, I tried to return the sentence to its original location (by typing Enter), and this was the result.
    4. Typing Enter one more time creates this situation.
  5. One thing I suggest adjusting: in Slides tab, the slides are now HUGE (with a LOT of space in between each slide)! Adjusting the slide size via the Panel menu also adjusts the text size in the Editor tab; so I didn't find that to a workable solution.

I hope those finds are helpful to your team. Blessings.

Edward

I hvae seen a number of issues reported in Sermon Builder in Logos 39 - and hopefully your detailed list will help in addressing those.

    One thing that intrigued me:

in Slides tab, the slides are now HUGE (with a LOT of space in between each slide)!

My office computer was still running Logos 38 so I took a screenshot of the slides view of a sermon document

I then applied the Logos 39 install and - without any changes - took another screenshot. For me, the slides are smaller in Logos 39 as well as having more space between them.

I am running Logos on Windows 11, what platform are you using?

Began to work on 2nd draft of sermon in the Editor. Unusable. Everytime I try and make an addition it copies whole blocks, and then the keyboard becomes unusable for making corrections. There appears to be a fairly significant bug which is evidently impacting imput. Like to get my message done on Monday so I hope they get a fix out soon.

There’s also a huge blank space on the left where the slides go. I think if you’re not using slides the blank space shouldn’t be there.

Previously when I typed a Bible reference in a sermon and hit enter it pasted the text in the sermon. It was a huge time saver but it no longer does this after the update.

Also, when I clink on the three dots on a note, and selected "Send to: sermon:xxx" it would past the note into the sermon wherever I had my cursor last in the sermon, allowing me to paste my notes into my sermon template exactely where I wanted to. Again, huge help. Now however, it will only past the note at the end of the sermon template after the conclusion rather that where in the sermon outline I want it.

This is going to cost alot of time until yall get the bugs worked out.

Also, I went I try to change a Scripture to a different style, it does so but deletes the reference.

The update also adds all kinds of extra spaces when pasteing.

And there are bugs in selecting text.

Can I go back to the previous version? This update has ruined Sermon Writer.

I had a number of oddities when copying and pasting content in my Sermon Document that came from other sources in my library, like what you mention. But I haven't been able to get those bugs consistently reproducible yet. For example, …

    1. When I inserted an image slide (a map I made) into my Sermon Document, the image slide became the background of all of my other text-based slides in the Sermon Document (again, I couldn't get that to reproduce).
    2. I had inserted a quote from a commentary in my document; but when I decided to move it to a different location by cutting and pasting when I pasted it in its new location, it was no longer linked to the commentary location (I couldn't reproduce it).
    3. When copying and pasting quotes from books in my library that occurred one immediately after another, when I pasted them, they were merged into one quotation as if they all came from the same resource (I couldn't reproduce this).

Graham, here's a screen shot of mine. It seems that the slide sizes dynamically adjust based upon the Logos window size. But notice the spacing between slides in my screenshot.

No other news on this issue, except my concern that this issue was flagged while this iteration was in Beta. From various comments it appears that the issue is cross platform making it virtually impossible to use the Sermon Editor. As such, but many of us this is a big deal.

Thank you all for your great feedback and bug reports in this thread. I have verified that cases have been created for a number of these issues, and I am creating cases for some of the new ones I have found in this thread. As for the few sometimes reproducible ones, I will take a further look at those and see about getting cases passed onto the team for those as well.

    Since update…

    (1) Can't enter text without having "insertion helpers" turned on and if you hit enter too soon doesn't work. You have to type the reference, pause, wait for the "helper" to come on then hit enter.

    (2) Can't type on scripture heading line. Top line that shows "John 3:16" used to be able to alter such as

"TEXT | John 3:16" or "TEXT | Jesus to Nicodemus | John 3:3"

    (3) Clicking off of text… Highlight some text, change the color or style, then try to click off of the text… What is the deal? I have to click three or four times to get off of it.

I know this may not seem like a big deal to some, but the changes are very frustrating to those that use this daily.

The only benefit I've seen so far is the ability to drag and drop lines of text, which, to be fair is a huge benefit I've been wishing for a long time.

    @Edward Barclay

When reviewing our open tickets for the bugs you noted, we found that the issue you are experiencing with Ctl+Alt+Shift+0 is not a true bug, but we definitely see how it would be considered one. This shortcut is actually reserved for saved styles in the styling menu. If you do not have a style saved in the tenth slot of that menu, then the Ctrl+Alt+Shift+0 shortcut would appear to remove the formatting. In our new iteration of Sermon Builder we have changed it so you can't apply empty stylings to areas of text throughout your sermon. The best keyboard shortcut to use to clear formatting is ⌘\ on Mac and Ctrl+\ on Windows.

Those items have all been frustrating to me AND I didn't even know that they added "drag and drop." Why wouldn't that have been listed in the release notes? I would have never known that this simple basic feature, which we have waited years for, had been added if not for this thread of frustrations!

The Scripture entry as a whole is kind of broken by this latest update. My thoughts are posted in this thread:

Sadly, Savanna, ctl+\ does not remove formatting for my iteration of software (39.1.6 on Windows 10 Pro). Here's a sample of text I want to remove all user applied formatting:

After pressing the shortcut (ctl+\) the formatting remains the same. The text is still orange.

And these images above are actually a good example. After the Ctl+\ shortcut didn't work, I thought about making the last saved style (Ctl+Alt+Shift+0) the default Logos Sermon Builder format. But if you'll notice, I don't want this selected text to just be black. I want it to be the normal gray font style of the Illustration Style. So, if what you're saying is true (and the Ctl+\ does not remove formatting, at least for me), then there is no way for a user to return the format of the Illustration text to the default Illustration format (gray) once they've applied a custom user style. I hope that explanation helps your team.

    {Update: I did notice later that I can click the clear formatting button on the popup after a selection, but the keyboard shortcut issue stands. Also, if your team is not aware, it does not look like you can save a custom user style that is just Medium, Black text (the default Sermon Builder font style).}

    Thanks, Savanna.

    Kind regards.

Hi Edward, thank you for your reply and continued feedback, it is very much appreciated. I'm sorry that shortcut isn't working for you. Are you using a standard keyboard? I have not yet run into any issue with the shortcut, but I will continue taking a look.

Hmm. That's interesting. It is a standard keyboard. Microsoft Wireless Comfort Keyboard 5050 (Model 1728). I do use that keyboard shortcut combination in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop for other things. And it works there.

@Edward Barclay The hotkey Ctrl and \ works for me in Sermon Builder to remove formatting in Windows 11 v39.1.6.

@Edward Barclay @Timothy Henderson @Jeremy Smalley The problem with needing to click repeatedly after selecting text will be fixed with the release of the version 40 update.

  • Timothy Henderson
Timothy Henderson Member Posts: 44 ✭✭

@Joe McCune (Faithlife) … So they added "drag and drop text" and I'm grateful. However, if you grab multiple lines and drop them, sermon builder will add multiple empty spaces between each line.

    First line of text… 4 empty spaces… second line… 4 empty spaces… &c.

You spend more time fixing and reformatting then if you would have just cut, copy, paste.

@Matthew R. Funk … You said you too were grateful for the "drag and drop" text feature. However, Just curious if you too are having this issue.

@Timothy Henderson @Matthew R. Funk The problem you both mention, that multiple empty spaces are being added, will be fixed in the next update.

Is it expected behaviour that sending a note to a sermon now puts the note at the end of the sermon, rather than where the cursor is in the text? I frequently will put into notes, quotes or references that I want include and previously could send it right to the spot in my sermon that I want it to be. Now it always is adding the note to the bottom.

Question… A couple of these issues are supposed to be fixed in the next update. Does anyone know when the update will be? I think Logos does updates pretty consistently, but didn't know if it is on a set schedule or when it takes place.

Updates are currently being released approximately every 6 weeks. The next update (v40) will be released next week. My personal guess is Tuesday.

I have an issue with using passage list to sermon. There are no populated panels except the title panel.
