Why Won't Drag and Drop Work Most of the Time?

Let's say I have a floating window with three tabs. I want to drag a book showing in my library window to my floating window to become another tab. It works—except most of the time when it doesn't. I have to get the new tab lined up just precisely perfect which seems to be an almost impossible thing to do. That little black bar comes and goes so quickly that sometimes it takes 20 or 30 tries to actually get it dragged. This is a serious productivity killer. Is this a logos problem that can be fixed, or is there an adjustment I need to make in my computer somewhere?

Thank you for the additional details. I am trying intently to replicate your problem and am unable to, even with the old toolbar and with dual monitors. I do have a question. I noticed an odd symbol at the top of your windows that I'm unfamiliar with. Do you know why this symbol is appearing for you? I'm wondering if some aspect of your installation could be causing the app to run less smoothly.

And I have an answer from DisplayFusion.

"In the DisplayFusion Settings > Window Management tab, do you have "Show a Tooltip when moving or re-sizing a window to display location and size" enabled? If so can you try to disable that and see if the issue persists?" It was checked. I unchecked it. And the issue went away.

I don't know all the ramifications of marking a response as answering the question. To make it easy for anyone who may look later I'm going to mark this as answering the question. But the credit goes to Aaron for noticing what led to the answer, so feel free to mark his response as answering instead if that accrues to his credit since without it I don't think the issue would have been solved.

And while this fix works regardless of whether a single or multiple monitor is used, to those who have multiple monitors I've found DisplayFusion extremely useful, especially with Logos. My only connection with them is as a customer, but you may wish to take a look.

Yep .. it's pretty slippery business. That change came along, a few years back. Before, it wasn't so slippery. I resign myself to several tries.

I am experiencing no difference between moving books or tabs in the primary window vs moving them into a floating window. Also, I am seeing a little blue bar, not black.

Using v40.2 on Windows 11. Could this be a Mac issue? It may also be related to Dynamic Toolbar vs Old Toolbar.

I am using Windows 11. I have found that it works a little better to open the resource in a floating window and then move the tab to the window you want it. That only takes 5 or 6 tries generally as opposed to 20 or 30. But it is very annoying either way. Other programs don't have problems like this, which makes me think it is somehow a Logos problem. It makes me cringe every time I set up a new window with library resources in it.

@Dale Lundy Are you using the Old Toolbar? Logos plans to eventually move all users (including nonsubscribers) to the new Dynamic Toolbar, so this bug may be fixed for you when that happens.

Aaron, you're cheating (not really). Sure, a slow ball, no problem. But get a real pitcher out on the mound, and see how you do.

Library in one window, target tab-row in another and 2nd window under the 1st (not showing)
Tab-row quite full (meaning the little arrows are showing)

Now, I suspect the Mac seriously complicates things. I do, like Dale. First open in a window. Then go over to the target window. Then grab the tab for the new book and drag, slide, oops, try again, oh my, not again … into the tab row. Mac does has window-positioning rules that get in the way … but that's prior to trying to insert into a tab row.

Nothing to prove here. Good thing too, cuz if I tried I'd make a fool of myself. 1 year of baseball when I was 10. I was never asked to join again.

But for the life of me, I can't figure out how to make this difficult. I have windows and tabs all over the place and the books still slide in like ice cream on a full stomach.

I'm not actually sure if I'm using the Old Toolbar or the New One (I'm not a subscriber). When I set up to do some further serious study on a book (let's say Job), then I'll set up the layout to where I have three or four windows for commentaries and reference books. I'll filter on the books on Job in the library. Then I'll drag and drop a book that I want into a tab in one of the windows. And then I may decide to drag a tab from one of the floating windows to another. In theory that allows me to organize each window the most efficient way for me. In practice it means I'm lucky to get any book into a tab at all because the books don't slide in like ice cream for me, more like trying to nail a cheap plastic tent peg into rocky ground where it works eventually if you can get it just right, but most often the peg just won't go in They do work a bit better when I move one from a panel on the right side to be a new tab on the panel on the left side, which is what I think your example may be showing. I don't as frequently need to do that, though.

I used to have problems with this caused the poor placement of the fixed/floating windows that caused unwanted changes in which window was brought to the foreground as I dragged the window. Once I developed the habit of no unintentional movement (usually sending/floating on the right and receiving/fixed window on the left OR windows not overlapping), the problem disappeared. I agree it was annoying.

The top screen is the left monitor, the bottom one is the right monitor. I am dragging a resource from the right (Library) to the left to form a tab. Most of the time when I get the cursor in the tab row it becomes the circle with the arrow through it and won't let me do anything. As I move it around a black bar will extremely briefly appear between two tabs indicating I can paste the tab in, but it disappears before I can get the cursor stopped moving. I move the cursor more and again, the black bar appears only for an instant and I can't stop the cursor quickly enough to get it to stay. Finally, after numerous tries I can make it work. I do this at times with more windows on the left, but it doesn't seem to matter as it has the same problem with only one window on the left.

I rarely cross monitors so I can't speak to that on an ongoing basis … only as an incidental test.

Aaron, you're a genius! That symbol is for a program called DisplayFusion which I've used to manage multiple monitors for several years. It is a very useful program. I ran a test and when I exited it, everything worked perfectly! When I started it up again the problem recurred. I think I didn't notice this because I've not ever had DisplayFusion be involved in a malfunction before. All other programs I have seem to work fine with it. I don't recall the problem under Windows 10. So I'm thinking the interaction between Logos, Display Fusion, and Windows 11 may be the cause. So I'm not sure whether the fix is in the realm of Logos, DisplayFusion, or where.

It is a relief to at least know for the moment what's behind it! Not sure where things go from here, but thanks for noticing that.

I have reported the problem to DisplayFusion. I sent them a screen video showing how it works with DF off and the problem that occurs with DF on. I'll report back when I hear from them. I don't know at the moment if the problem is something in DisplayFusion, Logos, or Windows 11, but at least we know that the three not working well together is what triggers it. Thus I'm not marking the question as answered yet, but I'll report back when I hear from DisplayFusion. Thanks for your help in getting this far.
