Question for anyone who knows...
Since most of the works on that site are obviously still within copyright, does the fact that those carrying the copyright have (presumably) given permission to www.religion-online.org to republish and distribute that material, does that mean that we also have the right to republish and distribute them for conversion into a PB? It would seem to me that a secondary copyright is not automatically transferable. I know that we can make PBs for our own use of pretty much anything we like, copyright or not, but to distribute them here raises ethical/legal questions for me.
I don't want to be a nervous-Nellie, but I do want to do what is right. Can anyone help me out? (Crux of my question: just because something is on the internet, does that mean that we can automatically distribute a docx of it to allow others to make a PB?)
Fortunately, enough time has passed that 1926 is in public domain.
hm. I think this might be true for books published originally in the US prior to 1930. The English language editions of "Jesus and the Word" were published in 1934 and 1958. It probably means that the work needed to be registered, and the copyright has expired if this registration was not renewed. However, it is possible that this copyright has renewed in the infamous URAA regulation, which put PD works back into copyrighted status: The German edition was published in 1926 and is still under copyright in Germany, since we have the 70-years-past-death rule and Bultmann lived until 1976 (which means it will become PD in 2047…).
You are probably correct. I took the copyright date at face value and did not check its accuracy
