The above is an example of a jump menu taken from the taskbar icon for Word. It is available via a right-click instead of the more common context menu. As you can see, it allows me to open the app and load a particular document in the same click. As a general class, jump menus allow one to jump to documents or tasks.
I would like to see the Document menu opened via the toolbar modified to (supplemented to add):
- Show the document type icon beside the document type in the left faceted selection
- Have that icon open a jump menu for that type of document.
If well received, the concept could spread to other areas of the program where one can open a function through history. The jump menu mechanism is simply a specialized history implemented for quick access.
