UBS 6 Commentary - why no special upgrade deal!?

Hi all,

With Accordance Bible Software, there are always special prices for upgrades. I expected the same from Logos.

However, despite the fact that I own UBS5, text, apparatus and commentary, I don't get any special price for the new UBS6 commentary!

How does this work?

Historically (and I speak from experience on this), Accordance does not always offer upgrade deals on new editions. For them or even us to do so is always up to the publisher. Logos does usually offer pre-order discounts on new releases.

Having never owned Accordance, and coming to Logos from dead tree format, I never expected a break for upgrading resources. I do, however, expect some type of recognition of prior ownership for software features.

Expected? Accordance and Logos are two different companies, you can’t expect them to operate the same. Contracts between publishers are different for each company. But it would be nice not to have to pay full price for the newer edition of an older work.

I totally agree. But on the other hand, my dead tree library doesn't work that way, either.

It is not an upgrade but a completely new book so I would not expect any special pricing deal above and beyond the pre-publication price simply because I own the older edition. I wouldn’t go into a bookstore and expect to get special pricing because I bought the print copy of the previous edition. The book store is not going to wear the loss so I can get a ’deal’ on the price and nor should Logos in the situation of a new edition of an electronic book. It would be a different story if the publisher was to offer special upgrade pricing for verified owners of the previous edition.

When I was there, Accordance didn't offer upgrade discounts from previous NA and UBS versions to new ones since GBS (the publisher) treats them not as upgrades but as new releases. Before I came to work there, I had to use my student discount or a store coupon to get a discount on them. I was never offered discounted upgrade pricing on these titles.

That's how it's been with Logos as well on GBS items. I either had to use my student discount or wait until they were on sale (or on a prepub sale) to get them.

GBS was one of the publishers that didn't generally offer upgrade pricing, and even sales were seldom (maybe about once a year around fall semester time). There are some biblical language tools both in Logos and Accordance I've been offered upgrade pricing on over the years, but GBS stuff is usually "premium" since it's the "gold standard" in scholarship.

It was always worth the money though. I couldn't survive seminary without it.

Even right now there is a special price to upgrade to USB6 text and apparatus on Accordance, though not for the commentary.
