Interlinears not working

I have written on the forums before about problems with my interlinears not working. I was told to download all the updates available and they should work. I have been living overseas, so haven't been able to do that, but when I returned to the U.S. last week, I downloaded over 6.4 GB of updates and yet the interlinears still do not work. when I hit the interlinear button, the line at the bottom of that panel gets a little thicker, but nothing pops up.

I'm also concerned that if the "update resources" did not solve my interlinear problem, there may be other resources that aren't correctly updated. So two questions...

1) How can I get my interlinears working

2) How can I make sure all my resources are truly installed and up-to-date.

Both of your problem seem to stem from the fact that your indexer is failing while indexing and downloading.

A few questions:

1) Did you have Libronix for Mac 1.2.2 installed?

2) Did you have any old Logos resources (*.LSF files) from previous Logos installs?

Also, can you exit Logos 4 and copy and paste the following line into Terminal, then paste the Indexer.log here after the Indexer finishes running?

cd /Applications/Logos\ Bible\ Software\ 4.app/Contents/MacOS/Logos4Indexer.app/Contents/MacOS/ && ./Logos4Indexer

When I ran the indexer, the icon in the task bar said "Logos Bible software is preparing your library, stage 1 of 3" The icon stays up for only about 5 seconds, and then disappears.

Can you save the following file 3225.EnableDebugLogging.sh.gz to your desktop, rename it to EnableDebugLogging.sh.gz, and open Terminal and do the following:

cd ~/Desktop
gunzip EnableDebugLogging.sh.gz
sh ./EnableDebugLogging.sh
If this is successful, you should see
Default logging level changed to Debug in /Applications/Logos Bible Software 4.app/Contents/MacOS/Bootstrap.exe.config
Default logging level changed to Debug in /Applications/Logos Bible Software 4.app/Contents/MacOS/Logos4Indexer.app/Contents/MacOS/Bootstrap.exe.config
Then run
cd /Applications/Logos\ Bible\ Software\ 4.app/Contents/MacOS/Logos4Indexer.app/Contents/MacOS/ && ./Logos4Indexer
Finally, reupload your Indexer.log

This should let me know what resource your indexer is failing on.

Thanks, unfortunately, that didn't give me any clues. The only thing that Logos 4 uses is the ResourceDiscovery paths from Libronix 1.2.2 which are saved in preferences. Logos 4 Mac attempts to discover any Logos 3/Libronix 1.2 resources to add them to your Logos 4 library. Certain resources give the indexer trouble and apparently some of your resources are causing the Logos 4 indexer to crash.

Renaming com.libronix.LibronixDLS.plist temporarily might also get you further. Before you do that, if you could run the debugging script I posted above, that would allow us to see what resource file is causing the indexer to crash.

Try deleting this file and rerunning the indexer from terminal again

Try deleting this file and rerunning the indexer from terminal

After deleting the file, I ran indexer again and it behaved in the same manner. The icon was in the task bar for 5 to 10 seconds, then disappeared. I then copied the indexer.log which I'll attach here.

OK, I removed the LLS:29.45.10 folder with the enclosed file. Then I ran the indexer from terminal as you instructed before and it is still quitting after a few seconds. Terminal then says, "abort trap".

So the problem appears to still be unsolved.

Your file seems to be different than mine. Based on the file size, it seems corrupt.

If you'll keep uploading your Indexer.log, I can keep diagnosing which files may be corrupt.

At some point in the release process, we added a check to make sure that the downloaded resources were exactly the size they should be. You might have downloaded your books before we added that check, so you could have several files which are corrupt.

I've reproduced your crash with the corrupted file. So it does appear that the download didn't complete successfully and that's the cause of the problem for NAC22.logos4

Tom, I was using the alpha version while still overseas and had the internet accessibility options and automatic update functions turned off due to my expensive internet access. I didn't update every new version, but only about one per month. I did it manually.

Since arriving back in the U.S. two weeks ago I have turned internet back on, updated the program file, (I'm using 4.0b SR-1 (4.10.4.8093)), and tried to run the "update resources" command (see my other post for all the details of that process).

What do you think of this solution? Since we have no way of knowing how many files are corrupt, is there some way of deleting all of my resources except my user-created ones (I have lots of notes already, and several resources with highlighting and markup). And then I would download everything from scratch (almost).

If I understand the way L4 works, then all of my purchased resources should be downloaded automatically, correct???

You could simply remove this folder: /Users/braziljoyces/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Data/0zcd9pl3.bgt/ and it should redownload all your resources again.

That's a good solution if you've got the time and bandwidth is cheap. Probably shorter in the long run than constantly having to wait for me to reply, although I'm happy to do it.

As I said above you can delete this folder: /Users/braziljoyces/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Data/0zcd9pl3.bgt/ and all your resources should redownload.

Since your initial index never finished, I'd guess that's probably just resources. Usually you need about as much space for the indexes as you do for the resources.

No, Highlighting and Notes are not stored with the resources. Anything that you've created so far should be synced to the cloud.

Your preferences, named layouts, shortcuts and custom guides should be synced to the cloud as well and should be preserved.

Most everything we sell is now in the cloud and will be downloaded automatically. There are some resources that Logos may not have had the rights to distribute because third party publishers didn't give us the right, so those things may still have to be loaded from disc. Unfortunately, there's no easy way in the system to check that you have every resource installed that you should have unlocked. Anything that doesn't automatically download is usually installable either by putting in the DVD and running "Scan Optical Media" from the command bar. Sometimes a call to Customer Support is necessary to have them unlock the item on your account first, if for some reason, the unlock didn't get put on your Logos.com account.

5) Can I delete libronix?

If you don't use it anymore, yes you can. They can run side by side, but I removed mine long ago.

I'm not sure that my L4 has ever successfully updated anything, so how can I be sure that my personal data has made it to the cloud? When does this normally happen? Is it during the update process?

I'm going to remove the folder you mentioned and zip it just in case I might lose something, then I'll run the update and let you know what happens.

One last question... I'm wondering if these issues could have been caused by the fact that the internet connection I am using here at my relative's house has a tendency to just drop out after a time. This would mean an interrupted download. A concern I've had with the way L4 updates is that it doesn't tell you at all where it is in the update process. If it asks to do a 6GB update, that could be hundreds of files, and if it is interrupted in the middle of one of those hundreds and that file gets corrupted, then I'm just going to have the same problem again. So my question... is an interrupted download of updates going to cause corrupted files? If so, I might wait until I get to my parents' for Christmas where their internet connection is a bit more reliable.

No, sync runs any time you make a change to the app, for example, opening a layout, editing a passage list, changing a note, opening/scrolling a resource. If you notice the little spinning arrows in the upper right hand corner of the app spinning, it's backing up your data. One of the great features of L4 is that you don't actually have to remember to save anything. It happens for you automagically. Also, your data is stored locally in files under /Users/braziljoyces/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Documents/0zcd9pl3.bgt/... If you don't delete the Documents folder under Logos4 you shouldn't lose any data.

Each file is it's own download job. Some files are small, around a few hundred kilobytes, and some, like media resources, are large, like 450 megabytes. If one file is interrupted, that file will be redownloaded, but all the downloaded files which completed before that should be fine. So for example if a download of 6.74 GB gets interrupted after 2.0 GB are downloaded, when you restart, you'll only need to download the remaining 4.74 GB. Also, there is some code to verify when each file finishes downloading that the file is exactly the same as the file on the server in the cloud. When you downloaded originally in the Alpha period, we didn't have that check in place, so download reliability is much better now. Also, if a download fails for whatever reason, it is retried 2 more times before the file is skipped. If the file doesn't download successfully after 3 tries, it is marked as failed and the download is tried again next time the indexer runs (which is usually when L4 is restarted).

P.S. That's because L4 thinks that this is a re-install, because you don't have any resources downloaded yet. So to make your initial experience better, L4 doesn't start until all your resources are downloaded and your Library is up to date.

You may have had a partial index for all the resources which had been discovered and loaded in your library previously. And there are other bookkeeping files in addition to resources and the Bible and Master indexes in the Logos4/Data subfolder. That would account for the difference.

I went to bed last night with that initial 6.74 GB running. When I got up this morning, the L4 main window had opened and that dialog was done, but the little blue icon at the top said 0% of 5.47 GB. So I have no idea if the whole 6.74 GB download worked or not. When I went to my library, it says "0 resources" I have rebooted my internet connection because the downloader was not moving off of 0 and Activity Monitor didn't show any download activity. Now the little blue icon is at 6% of 5.47 GB.

it sounds like you have been dealing with a lot there. Your library will continue to show 0 resources until the downloads are completed and indexing finishes. Depending on the size of your library, the initial indexing could take from 5 hours to a couple days to complete.

Hi Tom, me again!

I haven't done anything with this for a while due to holiday busy-ness, but wanted to let you know that things are still not as they should be. The downloads just keep happening. Last night it was asking for a big one, so I just let it run all night. When I got up in the morning, the download icon was gone, so I opened L4 and checked and my interlinears are still not working. As a matter of fact, the little icon that is usually there to pop up the interlinear ribbon is now gone from ESV and NASB and probably all other versions with interlinears.

After closing the program, I noticed that the blue icon popped up there again, and now it is downloading a 3.82 GB download. Remember that I deleted all my resources, and this is now the third download that has occurred since then. I am going to cancel this download because I have to skype with my boss at 8am and the download slows down the connection too much.

Before I cancelled the download, I ran the terminal command you gave me (cd /Applications/Logos\ Bible\ Software\ 4.app/Contents/MacOS/Logos4Indexer.app/Contents/MacOS/ && ./Logos4Indexer), and it didn't do anything. Now that I have cancelled the download, the blue icon says that it is indexing and that there are 6 hours remaining (and it seems to be going up in time not down.) I'm afraid I'm going to have to pause indexing before its done, because I need to travel before lunch today.

Any insights on what is happening here? When I get where I'm going, I'll try to let it run the full 3.82 GB download and see what happens, and then let you know.

Bryan, I'm not sure why the download is failing, but until you get all your resources downloaded you may not have all the functionality. The indexer will try to index what you've got downloaded so far, but it won't matter much if you've got another 1/2 your library to download. If the downloader gets stuck and quits downloading, you can always cancel it and restart the app to resume which files hadn't finished. Also, you can hold "cmd+shift" and click on the indexer icon and "Cancel All" to quit downloading or indexing if you need to.

If you're having trouble downloading the app and the resources, you can always call Customer Service and request a media disc with the base package resources on it. Then you'd only need to download what you purchased that wasn't on the media disc.

I've got some ideas that I'm going to test for future releases that should prevent one or two bad resources from preventing downloading/indexing, but hopefully, we can get you up and running before that release comes out.

Hi Tom,

I am traveling to various relatives during the holidays and I've now tried the download on three different internet connections, and on all of them, the download just won't finish.

Where I am currently, the internet connection is very good, so I decided to delete everything and start from scratch. I deleted Libronix and L4 from applications, and I deleted their respective folders in "Application Support". I then downloaded the most recent version of Logos4Mac and let it download all the resources from scratch. It started a 6.47GB download, but at 61% it stopped downloading. I left it for several hours more, but it was not progressing at all, so I cancelled it again.

Can you tell me why even starting over from scratch, I can't get this download to work?

Hi Tom,

I hope you check this thread. I haven't used Logos over the holidays, hoping that when I could find time to reinstall everything, it would update the resources correctly, but alas, I am still at square one with this problem. Here is what I did today.

I called tech support to make sure that I uninstalled everything related to L4 or Libronix. I got everything uninstalled (this is now the second time I have deleted everything. I then downloaded the L4 engine from my orders history page, as instructed by tech support. After downloading and installing L4, I let it run through its initial setup routine. It downloaded 6.47GB and then spent a couple of hours indexing it.

After the program was done indexing I checked the library and saw that I had 722 resources. I have no idea if this is ALL of my resources or not, BUT, I checked to see if my interlinears were working, and they were not, so I knew that the installation was still not right. I then ran "update resources" command again and got a dialog in the lower left that said, "updates were found and will be downloaded automatically." The updater then started a 5.97 GB download.

Once again, just as happened before, the download got to 78% and then stopped. I checked on the activity monitor and it was not downloading anything, so I quit the installer. I then got a message that said, "resources are ready to be added to your library." The updater could not close L4 and I couldn't manually close it either, so I had to force quit L4.

I have not even tried to reopen the program. This is almost exactly the same process of events that occurred last time I tried to update the resources and it was on a completely clean install! I'm wondering if there is something wrong with one of the source files of one of the resources. How could it be a problem on my end if it is a completely clean installation?

Tech support gave me a case number of 65509 and told me to post on here if I had any problems and that you would probably advise me.

Here's an update on what is happening. After the download I mentioned above stopped at 78%, and I had to force quit, I decided to just leave the program alone, but next time I used my computer, I noticed that the Logos downloader started working again and started a 5.95GB download. I decided to just let it download as many times as it wanted to and see if I can finally get this problem solved. It downloaded all day and when I went to bed it was at 97%. When I got up in the morning, it was still at 97% and I couldn't open any applications on my mac. Every application I clicked on said, "The application cannot be opened -10810" I logged out and back in, did a "repair permissions" and things are working again for me. However, when I started L4, it didn't do any "installing of new resources" and RESTARTED the 5.95GB download. (BTW, I haven't done any installation of new applications or barely used my laptop for anything but web browsing in the past month, so this problem wasn't caused by some other application)

I realize, Tom, that you are probably not reading this thread anymore because you told me to just contact customer support and get all my resources on physical media, but it is really frustrating me that this download option is not working. How can I be sure that it is going to work in the future as resources are updated? I can't keep getting physical media from Logos everytime I want to make sure my resources are up to date.

I'll be calling customer service today, but wanted to document on this thread what is happening with this problem.

I can almost feel your frustration having followed a number of threads that have documented the problems you are having. You must have spent days trying to get Logos to work and it can't help seeing the other threads where people are talking of the great improvements that Logos4Mac is making.

And I don't even have any advise for you other than two things: First to check that you spotted Tim's post above and have double checked that you have adequate disc storage space for both the resources and the index on your hard drive?

The second is to encourage you to stick in there, selfishly, because once they identify the problem you are having they will cure it and it won't affect anyone else and more importantly because once it is working it is a really great tool.

I realize, Tom, that you are probably not reading this thread anymore because you told me to just contact customer support and get all my resources on physical media, but it is really frustrating me that this download option is not working. How can I be sure that it is going to work in the future as resources are updated? I can't keep getting physical media from Logos everytime I want to make sure my resources are up to date.

I am still looking at this thread. I'm knee deep in tracking down some bugs that I've been looking for for the last 2 days, but I hope to get back to doing some downloader testing after that.

There seems to be quote a few resources that are not showing up, for me. When I went back to the original confirmation/download email, that I received from the sales person, there are several items that say "(No downloadable files for resource)." In fact it says that on the site, too. Should we be expecting a disc in the mail, with the other resources on them?

Couple ideas - contact Logos during business hours => http://www.logos.com/ - have customer service check license resource for your Logos account. Also can ask about no downloadable files - currently not aware of Logos 4 resources that require a disk. Logos does offer a resource disk - helpful for limited internet connectivity (albeit resources can be super-ceded by newer revisions).

Restart Mac - Blue Icon should appear in menu bar - wait for Blue icon to disappear - look in library for missing resources. If resources still missing, write a new post "Missing Resources ?" that includes some missing resource names along with compressed logo files, Wiki page has log posting steps => http://wiki.logos.com/Mac_Troubleshooting#How_to_Report_Bugs_in_Logos_4_Mac (which Bryan Jay included in initial post). From description, do not know if encountering same issue as Bryan Jay or NIV 2011 indexer crash issue http://community.logos.com/forums/t/28720.aspx or something else - log files needed.

I'll let you know on this thread how it turns out.

After 3 days, curious about any update ? Personally looking forward to Mac 4.0b SR-3 release that fixes indexer crash with NIV 2011 .

Here is the update on my installation problem: I tried to install on my wife's macbook just to see how it would compare with mine. This is what happened:

I started by downloading the L4 engine from my orders page and after installing, it did a 6.74GB initial download. It took all night for it to index and then in the morning the computer was real sluggish so we restarted it, and when L4 started up it said "indexing" for some time, then did a 600 some megabyte download. The indexer took quite a long time again (several hours) to index again.

While it was still indexing, I tried to open the program just to see if I could use the interlinears. When I opened it, it was very slow, then I got a dialog saying that there were new resources that needed to be added. I clicked OK, and then the program restarted and again told me there were new resources and it needed to do a 100MB download. So this was now the third download since installing the program.

So my question is...

Is it NORMAL for a fresh install to do more than one download to get all resources in place? (or does this indicate a malfunction in the downloader/indexer function?)

The indexer icon at the top then had two messages, one saying that it was downloading, and the other saying that it was indexing. While this was happening, I tried to use the program to see if it was functional. Although it responded very slowly, I noticed that Vickie's computer listed over 900 resources, whereas mine has 728. I also was able for the first time ever to toggle interlinears using the interlinear button. I have never been able to do this on my installation. I'm still not sure if the installation is complete, however, because the only way I know of to double-check this is to manually compare the list in my library against the lists online of what is included in Scholars Silver, plus all my additional add-ons. I wish there were an easy way to know what resources I own so that I can always be sure that everything that is supposed to be in my library is actually there and functional.

The installation on Vickie's computer appears to be working correctly, and there have been no additional updates found the last several times we have opened it. My computer, however, is still missing lots of resources and still wants to download everytime I open it. Since these downloads invariably fail, I just cancel them immediately. I am waiting for the DVD to arrive from Logos so that I can install everything directly from physical media and then run the "update resources" command to see what happens.

Concur puzzling - have paused indexing while waiting for all resources to download - followed by rebuild index.

Also wonder if Logos 4 has an internal MD5 checksum verifier to check downloaded resource for completion ?

Noticed current Logos 4.2a Beta 5 includes update change: download size for existing files has been reduced along with ability to schedule download time.

If computer has 10 GB free space, wonder about creating a new user and installing Logos. To keep Logos 4 from scanning Logos for Mac 1.2.2 book path, could modify a parameter list (PLIST) file => http://community.logos.com/forums/p/24650/184261.aspx#184261 (or rename PLIST file before installing Logos 4).

Last year, my dad was having trouble with iCal and needed a hard drive update for his MacBook Pro - did a fresh Mac OS X install on new drive, including copying user applications and files - now iCal working fine along with noticeably faster responses since new 7200 RPM drive is faster than original 5400 RPM drive. Apple's user migration assistant does a good job of copying user information - can be done as part of clean install or later.

Yes. We do have an MD5 checksum for downloaded resources.

However, after installing the program, it tries to go through its initial download, so my question is: How do I force the new installation to look for the resources on the physical media instead of downloading them?

Possibly. We have a rewritten Mac downloader coming in the next 4.2a Beta so performance and stability of the downloader may improve going forward from that release.

It appears that I finally have a complete installation of Logos 4 with all of my resources, and MY INTERLINEARS ARE WORKING! [:D][^][:P]

For those of you who have followed this and offered advice, here is what happened:

Tom recommended that I get a DVD with the resources and install from physical media, so once that arrived, I did a complete uninstall as instructed by the wiki (please note that tech support had earlier told me that simply removing the application and also the Logos 4 folder in ~/Library/Application Support/Logos4 would complete uninstall but this is not correct.)

I had a bit of trouble when the reinstallation asked me for the serial number, so I got on the phone with tech support and they helped me get past that dialog. The program then asked for my user name and password, retrieved my licenses and started copying resources from the DVD. This took a very long time, and in the meantime, the support technician had me deselect "use secure virtual memory" in my Mac OS security settings. For this to take effect however, the system needs to reboot, and I didn't want to interrupt the copying of resources.

When all the resources were copied, L4 immediately went into a download that was 708.2MB. I had not restarted the Mac at this point, so I'm not sure that deselecting "use secure virtual memory" really made any difference in the final outcome. I decided to let it finish this download to see what would happen. When the download finished, it told me that I had resources to install, so I clicked OK. This then restarted the program, but interestingly, when the program restarted, the dialog box said, "updating Logos Bible Software" and the button was "install and relaunch", so the update must have included a newer version of the program as well.

I then got the "preparing your library" dialog again, and this ran for quite some time. Then I got ANOTHER dialog saying that resources were ready to be installed, and I clicked OK again. The program then opened and it began indexing.

I then checked the library to see if the number of resources was the same as on my wife's installation, and sure enough, it was 923, the same as hers. I spot-checked my favorite resources and also looked up every stand-alone on my orders page to see if everything was in the library. Couldn't find anything missing, so I was ecstatic!

I'm sincerely hoping that this epic thread is coming to a close, and also that the downloader will work correctly in the future and keep my resources up-to-date.

My hat is off to Bryan Jay for his patience and ultimate success. After reading about his journey through the land of indexing woes, I will not complain about anything that pops up in future releases. My troubles seem miniscule in comparison, and this story was an encouraging reminder of the rewards for perseverance! Congratulations!

Just a follow-up, I have been using the program the past several days and I run "update resources" each time and the program has consistently said "no updates found", so that is a good indication that the problem is completely solved. I'll be interested to see when updates ARE available, if they are downloaded and indexed properly.

Does anyone know if L4 will automatically download the latest version of the program? Or do I need to do that manually?

Every time you start the program it checks the server to see if there is a new version and then downloads it, ready to install. You'll be notified when it's ready.

If you want to force a check while the program is running, simply type update now in the command bar.

Depends on program settings "Use Internet" and "Automatically Download Updates" - default is yes, can be changed (good idea to turn off when internet access $$$).
