Copy Bible Verse questions

Questions about the new method of copying Bible verses:

1. Is the CBV tool from the tray icon going to be abandoned, or is this temporary?

2. Will there be a way to copy/paste without changing font and (more importantly) size, while retaining other desired formatting?

3. Is there an easy way to copy/paste without first selecting text? (I can find this by typing 'copy' in the command bar, but not through the menus. I've placed it as a short-cut on the 'tool-bar' - or whatever we're calling it now.)

4. Pasting to HTML Editor pastes as plain text regardless of the target environment. Is that by design?

5. In pasting English Bible text into WordPerfect, it makes no difference which pasting scheme I choose (except HTML pastes as plain text).

6. Attempting to paste from the NA27 Interlinear (McReynolds) pastes all the text (not just the Greek). Is there a way to only print Greek text from a Greek Interlinear?

7. Pasting Greek text into WordPerfect works better using when setting the "to" field as "Microsoft Word," or "Open Office," or "Other" than setting it to "WordPerfect" (yes I know WP is non-cooperative regarding unicode [sigh]).

8. Created copy styles don't seem to be retained between sessions. Is that expected (for now)?

9. Is there any thought about opening the source enough for third parties to develop copy/paste programs or macros for other programs (Word, WordPerfect, OpenOffice, etc.)?

I add to that smarttags. I know I've asked about them before but never have seen a response. Not that you have to give one if your holding back for some reason, but I might have missed it...there's a lot of activity here

    Phillip,

What do you mean that you add that to smarttags?  To be honest I don't really understand smarttags.  How are they supposed to work?

Smarttags are a feature in Word. Logos built one for 3.0. It underlines every bible verse in word and gives you the option to replace it with the Text, open Logos to that passage, and some other stuff. I would really miss them.

Yes, CBV is a needed feature.

Did you see it under the tools menu?

    Phil,

Is there any way to do that from within Word (PowerPoint, etc)?  Either a SmartTag or some kind of replacement?

I guess I missed it when looking under tools. Now that I know where to look...

But I think what Mark was asking for (and what I would like to see return) is the CBV tray tool. In lieu of that, an open API to the part of the program that would retrieve Bible data and copy it for pasting in a word processor. (There was something like this in version 2, and it made it possible to write a macro in Word or WordPerfect that inserted Bible text into that program.)

Limiting this function to the way it works now seems like a step backwards to me.

BTW, I haven't seen any answers to my other questions either. I know you're busy, but it would be nice to hear something like, 'we haven't made any decisions about it yet' or simply 'we can't discuss the on this details yet,' or 'here are our responses to #'s x, x, and x. The other questions are still in process,' or 'thanks for the input. we're into these issues.'

Even better than the tray tool would be a pop-up copy tool that works in other applications like a certain other Bible Software's.  [H]

I would like to see this return as well. As it stands, to do the same job of copying and pasting into Word in Version 3, we now have an added mouse click in Version 4.

Rich is correct. That is a very useful facility. The current setup will work, but the tool tray for this and for Dictionary Look-up have been handy features. Hope they work themselves back into the new release.

Once again, please do not fail to have a smart tag for MS Word in the new release. Major problem in the way I work if it isn't there.

I don't know what the plan is with the system tray icon, but I've submitted a request.

CBV & Smart Tags would be difficult for me to live without, too.

Not sure if this is the correct place to provide this result, but,

When I put a passage in CBV, i.e., Php 2:5-11,

    Select Fully Formatted
from The Lexham High Definition NT
    to WordPerfect

the passage is copied and when I paste I get nothing but giberish. Checking Reveal Codes and I see the font that it was pasted in was Libronix Symbols.

Of course, I can run a Find & Replace and remove the Font, but that is not really a desirable result.

I must say that I really like the way the CBV dialog stays open and connected within the program. If I am not working specifically in Logos I, too, like the Taskbar icon for inserting Bible verses within WordPerfect.

BTW, will you include WordPerfect as a Copy and Paste instead of just Copy?

Confirmed. You can get rid of all the Libronix symbol font by selecting all the text and choosing your favorite font.

I also notice that the paste operation ends with the left margin adjusted to 1.5 inches.

But it's not uncommon for material pasted from either L3 or L4 to require major editing to look right. That's one of the reasons I never paste directly from either L3 or L4. It's easier for me to paste unformatted and then add my formatting later. (In L3, one of Dale Durnell's WP macros allowed for a bit more formatting.)

    • No, but you can drag it to shortcut bar for one-click opening.
    • CBV can be floated as any other panel, moved to second monitor, and made active when needed by clicking taskbar button. I've submitted a request to have right-click menu option from Tools menu to 'Open in floating window'.

    Hi Melissa,

Most of my work starts in an MS-Word research document, after initial raw research in Logos is complete. Logos just doesn't offer the tools to create & print a research document with only the research I'm interested in. Without Smart Tags & a system tray to avoid the clicks to get back into Logos for these functions, I'd most likely keep using L3--in part for efficiency, but in part to avoid irritating my wrists (RSI diagnosed, I already use a mouse right handed at work, a trackball left handed at home, & have scripts and/or templates to automate almost everything possible, to reduce the number of clicks). I'm sure I'm not alone on this, either... I'm not sure Logos understands how important these features are. Thanks for all you folks do for us!

    One more copy/paste request:

One more copy/paste change I would like would be that in poetic Biblical literature, instead of changing the margins for each line, change the paragraph indent, to demarcate the poetic verse. Even Tabs would be better than changing the margins.

I suppose these things are hidden for MSWord users. But for us WordPerfect users (at least), the effect is that reformatting this kind of literature (for space, or stylistic reasons) is very difficult.

    • This works in Word 2007 with Advanced Options for 'Pasting from other programs' set to 'Match Destination Formatting', and when using the 'Copy button, instead of 'Copy and Paste', when pasting into Word.  I will report that it doesn't work using 'Copy and Paste'.
    • This may be something that is considered for a post-4.0 version.

Phil I love the "Copy Bible Verse" tool. It follows me like an obedient puppy without linking it to the Bibles. Best of all, it does not give the footnotes. It simply inserted a new slide in Powerpoint 2007.

Without Smart Tags & a system tray to avoid the clicks to get back into Logos for these functions, I'd most likely keep using L3--

    Hi Bill,

I understand, since I do my Bible study lessons in Word, pulling in the text using the icon in the system tray in L3. But I think there is a way to basically do the same thing in L4, without it being in the system tray.

What I have done is pulled the Copy Verse icon onto my shortcut area in L4. Once I start my lesson in Word, I click initially on my Copy Verse icon and then once it is opened, I right-click on it and make it a floating window. Thus there is a Copy Bible Verses tab in my taskbar that is visible, even while I am working in Word, with Logos 4 minimized. Thus when it is time to copy and paste text into Word, instead of doing what I did in L3 (clicking in the system tray icon for the copy/paste option), I click on the Copy Bible Verses tab in my taskbar. Thus it is still one click.

    Hope this helps.

Great Idea! You had to have L3 open to use the copy tool bar or SmartTags anyway. It was actually kinda annoying to do a smart tag only to then have to wait for Logos to open up. I still eventually want SmartTags, though :-)

O.K., guess I'm doing something wrong. Seems everyone else is getting CBV to work for them. Here is my problem:

I'm working in Philippians 3:14 and open the CBV and Php 3:14 is in the verse box.
I delete Php 3:14 and put in 3 or 4 other verse selections I want to put in my document.
After typing them in the box is open with the circle thingy going round and round.
Finally, after a while it stops and I now have Philippians 3:14 back in the selection box and my other verse selections are gone.

I usually type in my verses using acceptable abreviations for the books. I've even tried typing in the full book title. Still does the above.

Oh, I have tried the above with CBV docked and also as a floating box.

    I have Beta 9 (4.0.3.1923) installed.

One of the ways that the CBV in L4 is different is that you cannot simply change the focus of the window after inserting the verse reference. You must press enter. In L3 pressing TAB was enough to generate the verse.

    Could that be your issue?

    Thanks for your reply, Rich.

No, it makes no difference. Somehow it seems to be connected to my open Bible, but I have made sure that None is selected in the Follow box, so it should not be following my Bible.

Sure is a mystery to me, but it is of no value as it is. I can just highlight and copy if all I want is the verse(s) I am working on. I want to use CBV to put in other verses I am not working on.

I really would like to use L4 CBV in a floating window, but guess until it is fixed for me, I'll have to use Zipcript from another program.

    Thanks again!!

I'm not sure what you mean by this. What you should see in the "Copy Bible Verses" dialog is this:

    image

Notice under the dialog box for entering a Scripture reference is where you enter the copy style, Bible version, to preferred destination. In my case I just left the default copy style (Quotation) and put in the NIV as the Bible version I want to copy from, along with my preferred destination (still the best word processor: WordPerfect).

It doesn't matter which Bible is open, or preferred, or what's in the follow box (BTW, what is a "Follow box?").The thing to look at is what's in the Bible Version section of the module.

Yes, Rich, I have exactly what you have except my Bible version is KJV. If I am working on a particular scripture and then open CBV, it opens with the verse I am working on and will not accept any other verse. I can highlight the reference and place a "-" and add connecting verses, i.e,. it opens with Philippians 3:14 because that is the verse I am working on. CBV will not allow me to change that verse to another passage. I can, however, make it Philippians 3:14-21.

I'm sure I'm not being clear. Oh, and, the Follow Box (actually the Link Set) which shows in CBV as Follow, A, B, C, D, -- None. To begin with when I checked it was highlighting Follow, so I cleared All links (which, BTW, also cleared all links I had on my Desktop) and selected None. Didn't matter, it still opens up with the verse that I am working on as the passage already in the CBV. I am not allowed to change it to any other passage.

By "verse I am working on" I guess would be better explained as the verse highlighted, or targeted, in my particular translation. This is somewhat frustrating.

Thanks again for you responses, I'm sure it is something that needs to be tweaked in my program.

Also, meant to ask, when you open CBV, does it already have a scripture passage in the selection box? What steps do you take to clear it and select another?

  • James H. Schafer
    James H. Schafer Member Posts: 167 ✭✭

Not sure if this might be my problem, with no idea how to fix it.

My Enter key does not affect the selection in CBV. When I type in a verse(s) it just sits there and never moves. The cursor is still in the box after hitting Enter. Enter DOES work everywhere else I can think to test, i.e., Search, PG, EG, my Bible text window when changing passages from book to book.

    Anyone with any ideas?

  • Rich DeRuiter

My Enter key does not affect the selection in CBV.

    Strange indeed.

Yes the initial verse that shows in the box is the active verse in the Bible I currently have open. I can easily change it, by typing in the reference. But the change doesn't register with what's displayed below until I press enter.

I'm at a loss to explain why this should be happening. Maybe a tech support person should chime in here.
