Does anybody have information about the planned availability of Logos 4 on Android? Martin.
Have read about Logos developing an Android application, including http://community.logos.com/forums/p/29469/236152.aspx#236152
and Bob Pritchett's reply on 3 Apr 2011 => http://community.logos.com/forums/p/31808/236824.aspx#236824
Doing a google search for: site:logos.com android returns many results, but none have a planned availability date.
Do know many Logos users looking forward to Android application.
Do know Logos ships early stable release, then incrementally enhances and improves.
If buying an Android device primarily for Logos use, recommend waiting for Logos Android application(s) to ship first, then choose a good device for Logos use. Android smart phones have a much wider range of capabilities; all good for phone calls, but suspect not all good for Logos (e.g. Highlighting).
Anticipating Logos announcement about Android application(s) being a few days prior to a stable version being shipped; essentially when release candidate(s) for various Android platform(s) show stable usability.
Keep Smiling [:)]
Thanks very much. I will watch progress with interest. Martin.

Yeah, I saw Dave's tweet about getting an Android phone earlier today. It must be coming soon! Any day now!

Facebook post couple hours ago. Logos currently has no timetable for Android application(s):
As an enthusiastic HTC EVO and Motorola Xoom owner (and soon to be HTC EVO 3D owner), I am truly sold out to the Android platform. Team Logos has done an unbelievable job of delivering the greatest desktop bible study software in the world.
My one gripe as an Android user is that it seems we are getting the "step child" treatment when it comes to major releases to the platform. iPhone users enjoy all the major releases to their platform while we sit waiting. This is despite the fact that Android is beating Apple in market share 32.9 % to 16% worldwide as of the last quarter 2010.
Apple's iOS WAS the dominant platform. Android IS now the dominant platform.
We are waiting on apps like Hulu, Comcast/Xfinity (full featured version like iOS), and Netflix. But more than anything we are waiting on a Logos app for Android phones and tablets.
Can't wait for the release team Logos. Bring it on! Thanks in advance

Likewise looking forward to Logos Launch announcement (when Android application is good for public use).
While I appreciate the chime in on the Android v Apple issue "fragmentation" is a myth that the iOS community perpetuates. The truth is that 91.1% of all Android devices are currently on Android 2.1 or above. http://developer.android.com/resources/dashboard/platform-versions.html
*** This means that developers are not really impacted by this so called fragmentation.***
What some call fragmentation I call freedom. Freedom from a one size fits all "we know best" form of delivery that Apple currently delivers. Android allows manufacturers to create devices of differing sizes and costs to meet customer preferences.
I have an EVO which has a 4.3 inch screen but my aunt might not want a device that large or costly so she can grab a device that meets her needs within the Android family. The stunning growth of Android over iOS, RIM and Symbian proves that users would rather decide what they want in a device.
Fragmentation is a myth. Logos devs could create an app that the vast majority of users could use without concerns about devices being able to run it. The truth is that most users savvy enough to use Logos on their mobile devices are also going to be using devices that can run it. There are very few apps that cannot run across the full spectrum of Android OS releases.
This is a non issue....
Also on the tablet front... The Asus EEE Transformer looks to have a US release date of 4/26. This device is AMAZING! It is not only $100 cheaper than iPad and Xoom but it features a dockable keypad that extends the battery life to 16 hours! It also features built in software to remote into your Windows PC which has unreal potential for the Logos power user.
I actually returned my Xoom (which I loved) to wait on the Transformer as the docking keypad was too good to pass up. When Logos releases the Android app me and my Transformer will be waiting [:D]

I beg to differ, unless there are big bold disclaimers there are going to be numerous people purchasing Android devices and saying why doesn't Logos work on my phone/tablet. It will be an issue till things are more standardized. That being said I am very happy Logos is doing the android App... As for numbers in the USA there are 234 million iOS devices android 23.8 million devices (data via comscore mobilens), it will grow and quite possibly or even likely surpass the iOS numbers, but it is a big difference. And although there is overlap in ownership it is pretty small to what i would have thought. Less than 28% of iPad owners own an iPhone. I know people who have had androids and dropped them fast, not for iPhone but for Window 7 phones, I know others who love their androids and still others who have switched to iphones. Logos shouldn't be limited to one platform but it takes time getting the various mobile platforms up and running.

That looks pretty darn cool.....
I'm a little skittish over the "1 gb ram" though....
That looks pretty darn cool..... I'm a little skittish over the "1 gb ram" though....
Why? The iPad2 only has 512MB. Tablet apps are smaller than Windows apps. (At least for now).
Remember this is not Windows. The 1 GB of RAM made the Xoom run as snappy as anything I've ever run. The only reason I'm switching to the Transformer is the keyboard which incidentally has two USB ports. Nothing on the tablet front can offer this full of an experience out of the box.

Dan, your numbers are quite a bit off. The Comstat numbers are worldwide that you have referenced. There are only 310 million people in the US and Apple only wishes that it had 234 devices here. Here are the actual numbers:
Initial research indicates that Apple’s iOS platform, which resides on iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches, has a combined platform reach of 37.9 million among all mobile phones, tablets and other such connected media devices, outreaching the Android platform by 59 percent....... The combined 37.9 million iOS users is 59 percent greater than the 23.8 million combined Android OS installed base, which includes users of both Android phones and connected media devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
Source is http://www.comscore.com/Press_Events/Press_Releases/2011/4/Apple_iOS_Platform_Outreaches_Android_by_59_Percent_in_U.S
Considering that Apple data includes iPhones, iPads and iPods and theses launch dates for Apple products:
iPod - October 23, 2001
iPhone - June 29, 2007
iPad - April 2010
And that Android installed base only includes phones and the extremely new tablet market:
Android phone - October 22, 2008 (T-Mobile G1)
Android Tablet - November 10, 2010 (T-Mobile Galaxy Tab)
Now.... considering that these number reflect iPods which have a 10 year market saturation as well as iPhones and iPads which both have much earlier releases in the US it really is amazing that the total number of devices at the close of 2010 is only 37.9 million iOS devices vs. 23.8 million Android devices.
With the current market trends worldwide the Android market share will totally overtake and dominate RIM, Symbian AND iOS by 2012.
Windows Phone 7 is at this point a non factor and have made a very small splash. Of course they got a VERY late start.
Fragmentation is a myth.
Google eBooks for Android has Phone (2.1 - 2.3) and Tablet (3.0) applications (with different capabilities) => http://books.google.com/help/ebooks/android.html
Wonder if Logos will have phone and tablet Android applications ? (following Google's fragmentation example) For Logos, have read many Logos users have Android phones so hoping phone application ships first.
Logos is conducting user survey => Please try the user survey! that has a question asking about mobile device ownership (check boxes includes Android).
Android devices have a much wider range of hardware capabilities => http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-20023199-264.html so do not know which Android device(s) will run Logos well.
If buying an Android device primarily for Logos, seems prudent to wait for Logos application to ship, then choose an Android device that works well with Logos.
This is my stance, I'm watching and waiting.
And praying for Christmas to come sooner this year.[:D]
Kevin,
That looks incredible and does exactly what I would want it to do.
Thanks for posting this,
Rich
Tks for the tip--I've responded.
I just got a Color Nook for my anniversary. I think it was because my wife is pretty sure I can't use L4 from it. [;)] Logos, please sneek an Android app out soon! I'll Alpha/Beta on the C-Nook for you... [A]
I don't know what everybody is clamoring about....I already HAVE L4 on my android phone....it's no big deal. (sorry for the blurry pic....my wifes phone takes horrible pictures.)
Do you have an app for this or is it being ran through biblia.com
I already HAVE L4 on my android phone.
Har har.
Did you notice that your clock shows the exact same time that Dave Dunkin's phone did? That's amazing!
Busted.... [:$]
Photoshop this time...but next time.....Logos on it for sure!
The background of the Tweet picture reminded me of something and it might be a clue:
Apparently Q is preventing the release of the Android app.
@Kevin Taylor I appreciate your frankness and your non fan boy like dictation. To me, debates on Iphone vs android should always be held on the software level, which no one really does so it gets quite out of hand. the facts are that even if iphone 5 or 6 becomes this rumored worldwide phone android will still gain market dominance. I think that Logos and android will have a great symbiotic relationship. my future evo 3d and htc 10 inch tablet and logos will be best friends for life.. life cycle i should say
We are agreed. I can't wait for the EVO 3D to hit in June, the EVO has been amazing but the hardware increases will be quite welcoming.
I managed to get my order in for the Asus eee Pad Transformer today with Newegg. It was a crazy day to say the least. The demand for these units was unreal. You cannot get one at any retail store at the moment. Supplies are dry.
My unit will arrive tomorrow and I'm very anxious to try out the built in Asus MyDesktop software to remotely connect to Logos 4 via my home PCs. The early reviews on MyDesktop have been VERY good. This would allow Logos users to have L4 on the tablet without the need for the L4 app.
Unfortunately I was not able to get my hands on a keyboard dock yet but hope to over the next few days. I'm currently able to remote access L4 on my EVO using one of two apps but on a 4.3 inch screen it is just not enough screen real estate to make good use of the full L4 desktop interface. With a 10.1 inch screen however it will be PERFECT.
When I owned the Xoom for about 2 weeks I used remote software and found L4 to be a joy. The Asus Transformer has a better display due to IPS so it ought to be even better.
I will report more on this tomorrow afternoon when I get the tablet but at $399 (16GB model) this is as good as it gets for a portable solution to utilize L4. Those looking at iPad2 remember that the 16GB or 32GB wifi only iPad2 will cost you $100 more than the corresponding Asus and also there is no keyboard option.
The keyboard dock is truly what sets this unit apart. With two USB ports and a second SD card slot you can add a mouse, external keyboard or hard drive if you like. Turning this tablet into a productivity monster.
Asus throws in free remote software (MyDesktop), free online UNLIMITED online storage space on their servers for your music, photos and documents (MyCloud) and even an app called MyNet that allows you to stream movies, music and photos to the tablet over your local network from any DLNA server or device.
We have a winner here folks...
@Kevin - can't wait to hear how the ASUS works for you. I was tempted to get an iPhone for a long time because of having a mobile version of L4 but couldn't stomach the cost or staying with AT&T. My eldest son is an iPhone fanatic [:D], but I am not that big a fan of Apple and decided to go to Verizon and an HTC Incredible. Love the Android (currently running 2.2 but will be upgraded to Gingerbread in the middle of summer) and HTC phones. Had an old HTC Wizard (Cingular 8125) that last for about 8 years (still does work) so stayed with a winner of a manufacturer. Had Windiws Mobile 5 for all that time and it was fine but still believe Android is better.
I to am eagerly awaiting the android app but I must disagree with Kevin. There are several keyboards for the ipad, as a matter of fact I am typing this on my logitech/zagg keyboard/case I picked up today for my ipad 2. There is also a free app, TeamViewer, that can be used to connect to the PC. I use it to get the full L4 experience on my ipad, although for reading i prefer the app. I would never trade my ipad for an Android tablet but I do enjoy having both OS's.
Eagerly awaiting the Asus review also!!
Sorry gang... My order got tied up due to the storms happening in the south. Hopefully my Asus will arrive tomorrow so I can report some good things and maybe even share via a video review. As for the keyboard it will not be available for a couple of weeks.
@Alan. I respect your opinion on the iPad although we disagree. I must say however that there is no equivalent keyboard for the iPad. None offer the true integration that the Asus Transformer does either physically or functionally. The Asus keyboard not only powers the unit with the equivalent of double the battery life but also is a full keyboard with a touch pad, Android shortcut keys for critical functions and also two USB 2.0 slots that can be used for a PC mouse or external hard drive. The Asus also folds up just like a netbook or laptop so it can truly be used on the go in any situation.
None of the iPad keyboards including the one you own by Logitech will do any of this. And without a touchpad I don't think they would hold my attention at all. With the Asus keyboard there is nothing I could not do with my Transformer on L4 that could be done on my laptop (even printing thanks to Google Cloud printing).
This would also be the same case for the Bluetooth keyboards available for other Android devices.
This keyboard is truly something unique and I'm very excited about the implications! Best of all I no longer have to sweat the release of the Android app for L4. I can have full functionality on the go with my Transformer.
Here is a pretty decent overview of the Asus transformer keyboard in action. Again, this cannot currently be duplicated with an iPad keyboard. I also love the fact that no special drivers are needed to use your current mouse, USB keyboards or external hard drives. It just works...

This one is also good for a better look at the superior physical integration and functionality:

When Logos releases the Android app me and my Transformer will be waiting
Kevin (or anyone esle [:)], just wondering if you could help an Aussie decide on what tablet to get? I really enjoyed reading your opinions on this forum.
I am leaning towards waiting for the Asus Transformer to be released in Australia. However, the ACER Iconia 500 is already available.
My primary purpose would be to use L4. I like the remote connectivity option on the TF101, along with the keyboard/docking ability.
1. How have you found TF101 (even though the L4 Android app isnt available yet)?
2. How would you compare it to the Iconia? Is it worth me waiting for the TF101 to be released? Or should I be looking at the Asus Eee Slate 121, with an i5 processor? You did say that a tablet not running windows doesn't need to be so powerful.
3. How is the keyboard connected? I can see it's a part of the docking station, but is it bluetooth, USB, or does the tablet communicate simply via the docking device?
4. Can you play QuickTime and Windows Media Player files on such a device (I'm asking this in regards to the "Learn to use Hebrew & Greek with Logos" DVD's). I realise I would have to put the files onto a USB stick to transfer them, but I have no knolwedge yet of Android and don't know if such files can be played.
Thank you for any advice you may give.

Okay, Kevin, has your Transformer arrived?
I anticipate getting a tablet sometime this year and wonder if there is a comparable or even better alternative to an iPad 2. Using Logos 4 would be the primary reason for one, so I won't probably will not buy anything till a tested Android app for Logos is available.
I just bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab Wi-Fi P1010 for $349 and can't wait for the Android app!

Thanks Todd....that put it in perspective...I've not had experience with tablets and things to I'm used to talking about 6gb and 8gb.....that's all...I understand now...
I just bought (actually I put myself on the backorder list) a Transformer 16gb with keyboard dock...
I can't wait for L4 for Android!! argggg [:@]

1. Yes Mebin I was blessed to get my order in with N@wEgg on the US launch day after 6 hours of trying. I received my unit 3 days later due to bad weather conditions that prevented it from arriving over night.
2. IMHO any of the current "big boy" Android tablets are awesome (this means the Iconia, Xoom or Transformer currently). The big boy Android tablets all feature the same internal hardware specs. All feature 10.1" display, Tegra 2, 1GHZ dual core processors and 1 GB of RAM. There are differences such as cost, internal memory and design. For instance, the Transformer has an IPS Screen with Gorilla Glass like the iPad. This makes this glass very scratch and break resistant as well as the display much better. The Xoom features a smooth glossy matte finish versus the Transformer's texture back finish. The Iconia has a USB port in the unit where the other two do not (although the Transformer has TWO USB 2.0 ports in the dock as well as a full size SD card slot (the tablet has a micro SD card slot). In summation, I have owned the Xoom and now the Transformer (never the Iconia) but to me the Transformer is the biggest bang for the buck. Lower cost and the best display and design. The dock attachment is also unique and makes the use for Logos 4 second to none. This is the Honetcomb tablet of choice. In fairness I must mention the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 wifi tablet. To me it is too little too late and also $100 more than the Transformer at either 16GB or 32GB. I have my own personal reasons for not trusting Samsung. They have modified the tablet with TouchWiz 4.0 which means that updates will have to come from them instead of Google. Google search what has happened with their Android phones such as the Epic or any Galaxy phone. They are all still using Android 2.1. I would avoid Samsung until they show better initiative in updating their products.
3. The keyboard connects through a 40 pin connector and two support slots on the bottom of the unit. It forms a perfect seam that is locked in by a tab on the front of the unit and very easy to unlocked although super secure at the same time. The connection is purely based on the 40 pin bus connection and does not depend on Bluetooth or any radio based connection.
4. I can play any format on my Transformer. MP4, Divx, Xvid, WMV etc etc. I use Moboplayer but there are several free players that will fill all of your format needs (iPad can't do this).
My advice is to get the Transformer. It is the best all around choice in the tablet market at the moment.

I am currently able to use L4 to the fullest using my Transformer and LogMeIn or the built in remote software that comes with the unit for free. I prefer LogMeIn but there are several options and it is a matter of personal preference. The L4 app will be awesome but I am able to enjoy my full L4 experience right now without it. As a disclaimer this will work with any Android tablet and the iPad at the moment.

Ouch--just saw the non-sensical final sentence from my post above.
I did not realize that L4 can be used on a Transformer as is. What will (may) an L4 app be able to do that the current setup will not?
Thanks.

Well, the L4 app is still very useful as there are many that may not want to remote into their desktop or laptop where L4 is resident for a variety of reasons. I'm still looking forward to the app but it is great to have the full program available in the meantime.

You'll love it Robert... I played with mine for 12 straight hours after I got it LOL... Let me know when you get it!
Observation: in Sep 2010, Apple approved VLC player for iPad => http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/09/apple-approves-vlc-video-player-for-ipad
Searching iTunes for VLC finds over a dozen players for iPad that can play a multitude of video formats.
For Learning Logos videos, used Handbrake to convert QuickTime to MPEG-4 to significantly reduce file size while retaining video quality.
Apologies, Apple's iPad 2 has faster graphics than Xoom => http://www.electronista.com/articles/11/03/12/ipad.2.benched.against.xoom/
Thankful for remote desktop & VNC applications for Android and iPad so can interact with Libronix 3 or Logos 4 from a mobile device.
Noticed May 3 tweet about Logos Android Application => getting closer. Still a few more things to get in place before an external beta.
Wonder about Android forum creation ?
VLC has limitations even though it is a great player. It can only handle some MWV files and cannot play FLV files which are very popular with sites such as YouTube and other Flash based sites. Also with iPad you DO NOT have 16:9 aspect ratio and CANNOT enjoy 1080p video.
Not to mention that with iPad you are always locked into iTunes which is as Draconian as it gets. You cannot freely add audio files to your device that are not bound to a single account without fear of wiping out all of your music. This is a huge downfall with Apple.
Yes it is true that the iPad does have a better graphics card than Tegra 2 but there are no games that are in question that cannot be played with Tegra 2 so this is a non issue. Also since most users here are concerned with audio and video file play back and not video games that cannot theoretically be played this is not a true advantage. For example, my desktop PC has a far superior video card over my gaming laptop but my trusty GeForce 9800M GTS in my laptop can still play any video game on the market so I don't mind that my desktop has a better card.
Also since RAM is half in the iPad 2 (only 512 MB) THAT is a real world stat that will actually translate to something tangible that people will actually be concerned with.
iPad 2 is more expensive, more restrictive and apart from a better video card has more hardware limitations including screen aspect and media playback concerns. Apple makes a good product but they decide what you get, with Android you can choose the device you want and the size/pricing point you are willing to pay.
Also, I'd like to see an iPad owner crank out notes as fast as a Transformer user can with the full size keyboard with additional battery, two USB ports and second SD card.
Better bang with Android....
Thank you very much for your enlightening response...I am now sure, I will wait for the Transformer to be released in Australia...it just has too many advantages.
Also with iPad you DO NOT have 16:9 aspect ratio and CANNOT enjoy 1080p video.
Currently not know of any Android or iOS device with 1920 x 1080 screen resolution needed for native 1080p video display. Have read rumors about future Apple iPad model (perhaps iPad 3 or iPad 4) with 2048 by 1536 resolution that could display native high definition 1080p video; speculating future Android device will have native 1080p display (possibly within a year or two). Already noticing 3D displays on some gaming notebooks; wonder about 3D display future for Android and iOS.

Apologies; have copied 85 hymns from many CD's purchased from a discount web site (that also has Libronix CD's) onto my iPad for playing. Also have copied 50 videos from Logos (after using Handbrake to reduce video file size). Personally can copy music and videos to other computers and devices.
One aspect about Draconian is active application scanning by Apple for malware. Android has much more freedom for malware installation and interference (like Windows, good idea to install anti-malware apps on Android).
Observation: Google makes money selling advertising; many companies willing to pay for your current location (targeted advertising). Found an article with Google competitive insights (from a lawsuit) => http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/09/technology/09google.html
Also aware of more than 40 smartphone lawsuits world wide => http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9216223/Smartphone_patent_fight_World_War_III_?source=rss_news whose rulings and ramifications have yet to be felt.
Personally wish Apple would add a General setting so closing an application does not leave memory footprint for quick restart. After experiencing low memory crashes in an earlier Logos iOS version, learned to close application footprints before using Logos extensively, which works fine on 1st generation iPad. Thankful can use many resources offline; looking forward to Android application (not know when to expect offline Logos resources on Android).
Observation: Motorola Xoom costs more than iPad 2. Found an article with 3 tablets cheaper than iPad 2 => http://news.yahoo.com/s/ac/20110508/tc_ac/8437815_three_tablets_cheaper_than_the_ipad2 (includes Asus eee Transformer) Also found an Android 3.0 dream list article => http://news.yahoo.com/s/pcworld/20110508/tc_pcworld/fivethingsgoogleneedstofixinandroid30honeycomb (includes easier access to USB files)
Concur would be interesting to compare Transformer with journalists using iPad and bluetooth keyboard. Also wonder about future iPad accessory (external keyboard with battery is a good design).
