PBB - docx format for making a Bible
Hi,
Is there a specific format for building a Bible? Does anyone have a working sample? I am trying to make a Romanian Bible but I don't know where to start. I have the Bible in doc format and I saved it to a docx format but I don't think that is enough. I tried adding it into Logos as Type: Bible but it does not show up as a Bible option when I am trying to select it under preferred Bible and it also does not link with the commentaries or other Bibles. Do I need to use the English book names and chapter headings to make it work (Genesis vs Geneza , Chapter 1 vs Capitolul 1)?
Thank you,
George

Hi!
This is how I'm making Finnish Bibles:
1. At first you should have the bible text in plain text one verse / line with book name, chapter and verse numbers in the beginning of every line.
2. Open the txt file in Excel and use Excels text import tool (opens automatically when opening txt-file in Excel) to put book, chapter, verse and Bible text to separate columns (you may need to do this in 3 stages if the chapter and verse numbers are separated with spaces and not tabulators).
3. Add new columns to the table for codes (C, E-H and J). Write the codes to the columns. Here's an example (column B is the original chapter number, D the verse number):
A B C D E F G H I J [[@Bible:Ge 1 : 1 ]] =D . {{field-on:bible}} Alussa loi Jumala taivaan ja maan. {{field-off:bible}} - You must have a space after the book abbreviation (column A: "[[@Bible:Ge ") and after the visible verse number (column G: ". ")
- You can find the book abbreviations here: http://wiki.logos.com/COM_API_Bible_Book_Abbreviations4. Save the file as Excel document (you may need to modify it later)
5. Copy the table columns A-J in Excel and paste them to Word as plain text (not as a table)
6. Remove the tabulators with find and replace command.
7. Save the file as docx
8. Add the book and chapter names: Book names as Heading 1 and chapter names as Heading 2 (or OT/NT as H1, book name as H2 and chapter name as H3) and add the codes for books and chapters in the beginning of the headers. Here's an example how it should look in Word:
[[@Bible:Ge]]GENESIS, Ensimäinen Moseksen kirja
[[@Bible:Ge 1]]1. Luku.
[[@Bible:Ge 1:1]]1. {{field-on:bible}}Alussa loi Jumala
taivaan ja maan.{{field-off:bible}}[[@Bible:Ge 1:2]]2. {{field-on:bible}}Ja maa oli autio ja
tyhjä, ja pimeys oli syvyyden päällä, ja Jumalan Henki liikkui vetten
päällä.{{field-off:bible}}9. If you want to have introductions, ingresses or subheaders (as Heading 3) to your Bible, add the texts to the correct places without any coding.
And there it is. For me, the easiest steps were 1-7 (about 30-60min). Steps 8-9 will take more time.
One thing to note: You may need to change the @Bible -code if the bible have a different verse numbering system (for example where the Isaiah chapter 53 starts, is there 3 or 4 chapters in Malachi, etc.). There's own codes for different numberings. You can read more about it here: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/35157/266882.aspx#266882

But how can I separate the following text in Excel:
Eze 40:1 In het vijfentwintigste jaar van onze ballingschap, aan het begin van het jaar, op de tiende van de maand, in het veertiende jaar nadat de stad was verslagen, op diezelfde dag was de hand van de HEERE op mij en bracht Hij mij erheen. (Dutch).
I first separated the text on ":" That worked.
I then tried separating on spaces but then every word is in a different column!
How can I separate Eze - 40 - 1 - In het vijfentwintigste....?

Hans,
If you have the bible as a text file with 1 verse per line, like
Eze 39:41 Ihet wintigsteEze 40:1 In wintigste
email it to me and I be happy to run it through my compiler which should tag it for you.

Dominic, Here it is.
It's only a segment of Ezekiel (only chap. 40-48) . But I'm working on it and would have this translation too.
A further question: does Logos recognize those PBB's as bibles so that I can use "Copy Bible Verses"?
Kind regards
Hans

Sadly then you will have to copy and paste it in yourself verse by verse, it must be the known unicode issue with my development software, but cant afford to upgrade it right now solely to fix this unicode issue.
I enclose a blank Bible which you might be able to copy and paste your text into, but sorry its going to take you a while... sorry I cant help you further in this case...

Sadly then you will have to copy and paste it in yourself verse by verse,
I have been copy and paste half a chapter at a time [this may or my not work for your Unicode file]
Procedure - using column copy
File two – next chapter to insert
Set page width to 22 inches [max that my copy of Word will take]
Do what ever you need to do to get the chapter into the format of one line per verse with verse number at start of line
1 verse one text
2 verse two text
3 verse three text
4 verse four text and this verse is 85 characters long -> (to char 85)
5 verse five with error – it runs on to <end of line char here>
Two lines – fix it by making it all on one line
6 verse six text
File one – the Bible that you are editing
Chapter 23 [this is the chapter header format the rest in in verse format]
[[@bible:Matthew 23:1]]1{{field-on:Bible}} NEXT HERE{{field-off:Bible}}
[[@bible:Matthew 23:2]]2{{field-on:Bible}} {{field-off:Bible}}
[[@bible:Matthew 23:3]]3{{field-on:Bible}} {{field-off:Bible}}
-- The NEXT HERE is my search item to find where I quit last time (as in next chapter goes here)
I remove ‘next here ‘
I see that all of the ‘}} {{’ line up (note jump between 9 and 10 – ‘10’ has more characters)
In file two I use column copy [set insert point to the start of the next verse (say at the ‘1’ in verse 1)
Push and hold the ‘ALT’ key
Drag down to verse 9
Drag across to just past the end of the longest verse (above verse 4 is stated to be 85 char long)
Release ‘ALT’ key
Ctrl-c to copy the text
In file one with the insert point on where I want the first character of the next verse inserted ctrl-v to paste
All of the verses have been pasted inrepeat for the rest of the chapter repeat for all the rest of the chapters
Might want to do this to verses 1-9 then 10 to the end of the chapter (in two or more steps)
Then I have to remove the verse numbers that are in the Bible text section (allows check that the verse is on the correct line)
But it beats doing one verse at a time [this may or my not work for your Unicode file]0 -
