Slow Start UpClosed

Hi Bob
You might be seeing the same thing as being discussed in the PC Beta forum - http://community.logos.com/forums/t/42231.aspx
Graham
Graham,
i did cruise over to the win forum and posted. I think you are right this is a problem with both sides Mac and Win. Mine box takes nearly 5 minutes to boot L4. The sync feature is what is so slow. At any rate thanks for your input.

The sync feature is what is so slow.
Curious if diagnostic logs have any interesting messages ?
Option: download and use an applescipt application 5504.Logos4MacLogging.app.zip to display logging setting, then change to enable logging.
Wiki has => http://wiki.logos.com/Diagnostic_Logging#Mac with terminal commands, which are used in applescript application.
With logging enabled, can open Logos4.log and Indexer.log files. For sync issues, suspect Logos4.log would be most helpful.
Wiki Mac Troubleshooting => How to Report Bugs in Logos 4 Mac has log posting steps.

I just timed my start up. First step was "signing in" which was OK. The next step was "preparing your library" which also was OK. It took over 5 minutes to complete the "synchronizing" which is UNACCEPTABLE! This apparently is a problem on the Windows side as well.

Concur 5 minute launch time is unacceptable. Please enable diagnostic logging; would like to look at Logos4.log file, which may have informational and/or error message(s) that would be helpful for diagnosis.

I am trying to set up logging. I downloaded the zip file and it asked me if I want to enable logging and I clicked yes. From here I'm not sure where to go.
I did however notice that synchronization is NOT working on my MacBook. The "synchronization" process is taking so long because it seems to be "timing out". Once that happens and the main window comes up I noticed in the upper right hand corner a yellow triangle over the sync arrows. Not sure why I can't sync but that appears to be the problem.

Bob - Are you using the same version on all your computers?

I had thought that you were using two computers (your macbook and another). You will have to wait for someone else to help you with the applescript program... I have not used it before. If you want to, you can read the wiki pages that KS4J linked to above which provides help with the "old fashioned" way.
I am curious - Did this just start with b10? Have you done anything new on your MacBook recently? Are you using your regular internet connection?

Launch Logos 4.5 Beta 10, wait for Home Page to appear, then quit Logos.
Please download then use Logos Log Scribe application to create a zip file on your desktop (copies console messages, then compresses contents of your Logging folder for posting).
Please reply and attach zip file. Wiki has Using the Forums => Adding a picture to a Post with illustrated steps showing how to attach a picture. Instead of a picture, please attach zip file.

Observation: Logos4.log file shows 10 batches of sync downloads with last one: "Downloaded 12 item batch with sync date range 08/06/2011 10:05:38 - 08/24/2011 16:30:58" that completes for 12 items, but is followed 5 minutes later by a timeout error:
Error occurred during synchronization download - Libronix.DigitalLibrary.Synchronization.SyncClientException: Exception during synchronization. ---> System.Net.WebException: The operation has timed out.
Appears Logos servers has many batches of sync updates for you from months ago.
The last batch download timeframe corresponds to stable 4.3 release followed by service fixes (no active Beta); hence wonder about email to Logos Mac Support => http://www.logos.com/about/contact with reference to this thread since Logos assistance is needed.
By the way, the earliest sync download is over a year old.

Well, I did call Logos Tech Support but since it is a beta product they cannot help me sort out the synchronization problem. He did alude to the fact that the sync stuff is being redone so maybe if I just wiat it out.
One wait option is Logos 4.5 stable release (hopefully soon), then call again if still having sync issue (e.g. 5 minute startup delay while waiting for a time out).
Thinking out loud: wonder how many sync batch sets can be downloaded ? Over 10 ? Also wonder about sync data format compatibility over a year since the oldest sync data is not being marked successfully applied.

Bob, this issue has already been reported to our Development department (http://community.logos.com/forums/p/42231). I will update the case and mention it also happens on Mac.
is there a way to TURN OFF the synchronization until this is resolved?
Believe this can only be done by setting Use Internet to No on Program Settings (Logos Preferences)
Jack,
You are absolutely correct. I changed the internet preferences to "no" and Logos boots up very quickly. Thanks. Not sure why my sync stuff is messed up but for now I'll just leave the internet to "no". Thanks.
Bob
EDIT: While the Logos was started and the home page (not a workspace) was up, I rechecked "internet" to "on" and the sync arrows once again began to rotate but about 2 minutes into the sync Logos 4 crashed.

As I posted in the Windows forum (http://community.logos.com/forums/p/42231/314666.aspx#314666), you can leave "Use Internet" on and close the "Synchronizing" window to launch the home page right away but keep synchronising in the background; you don't have to wait for that window to close by itself.
We recommend waiting for sync to finish (when it's running without errors), but in your case, there is an error that is preventing the program from running properly. We'll analyse your logs and try to figure out what's going wrong.
What kind of Internet connection do you have? What results does http://www.speedtest.net/ give you for Ping, Download Speed and Upload Speed? (You can click the "Share This Result" button when it finishes and paste the URL here.)
I have cable internet (Road Runner). I recently upgraded the speed and while it is certainly NOT the fastest it should be adequate.
I would really like to add resources especially now with all the deals available but this instability and uncertainty has gone on for over a year now and I am EXTREMELY hesitant to dump any significant sums of money into resources at this point. To say I am disappointed is a gross understatement!

Wonder if analysis has revealed any enlightening information and ideas how to fix ?
By the way, Bob posted a reply about Logos 4.5 Beta 12 not fixing sync error issues => http://community.logos.com/forums/p/42500/318402.aspx#318402
