OT: Manetho - Egyptian Historian

I keep running into 'Manetho' this and 'Manetho' that. I was hoping that amongst the Perseus hoard, 'Manetho' pieces would appear. But no such luck so far.

Anyway anyone wanting an easy download: http://archive.org/details/manethowithengli00maneuoft

I'm obviously no Manetho expert but this would seem to be a nice addition to Logos. It's actually offered for sale by the publisher  Harvard University Press but apparently has given Archive.com digitizing rights.

And interestingly enough, having read some of this pdf, another Logos $$$ resource looks pretty interesting:

Here's a sample page. 'Manetho', in competition with other ancient historians, was was frequently over-written in the later 'history-wars' - this page takes aim at his data):

Do any let you literally read Manetho? (versus reference to 'Manetho'). He was an author.

Concur, did find some Manetho information in other resources (and noted a footnote in Josephus about tone used):

    Hi DMB,

The Loeb Classics has a volume devoted to the available fragments attributed to Manetho. I have advocated that Logos offer this library on UserVoice. I make an unabashed request for your support. I provide a link to the Loeb offering here: http://www.amazon.com/Manetho-History-Egypt-Classical-Library/dp/0674993853

Beloved ... your suggestion is far better than mine. And indeed a user-voice vote is a go. Thank YOU!

I also appreciate your amazon ref; a few gold nuggets in the user reviews.

KSFJ .... thank you for the screen copies. It's interesting Manetho shows up so often but 'no Manetho' (his writings apparently lost forever).

But Beloved's suggestion is the best solution. Probably many things in Loeb that we don't know we need.

But it appears that Josephus did word for word quote in some of his own writings, as noted below:

[Logos] Works of Josephus, Against Apion 1.72–77:

    14. (73) I shall begin with the writings of the Egyptians; not indeed of those that have written in the Egyptian language, which it is impossible for me to do. But Manetho was a man who was by birth an Egyptian; yet had he made himself master of the Greek learning, as is very evident, for he wrote the history of his own country in the Greek tongue, by translating it, as he saith himself, out of their sacred records: he also finds great fault with Herodotus for his ignorance and false relations of Egyptian affairs. (74) Now, this Manetho, in the second book of his Egyptian History, writes concerning us in the following manner. I will set down his very words, as if I were to bring the very man himself into a court for a witness:—(75)

"There was a king of ours, whose name was Timaus. Under him it came to pass, I know not how, that God was averse to us; and there came, after a surprising manner, men of ignoble birth out of the eastern parts, and had boldness enough to make an expedition into our country, and with ease subdued it by force, yet without our hazarding a battle with them. (76) So when they had gotten those that governed us under their power, they afterwards burnt down our cities, and demolished the temples of the gods, and used all the inhabitants after a most barbarous manner; nay, some they slew, and led their children and their wives into slavery. (77) At length they made one of themselves king, whose name was Salatis; he also lived at Memphis, and made bo

The way to suggest resources is in the Suggestions forum, and/or by mail to suggest@logos.com. UserVoice is for "user-ranking of feature priorities" (my bold). I doubt the people who decide on resources even look at UserVoice.

    Hey fgh,

I did not know that. Learn something new about Logos every day. If I recall correctly I did start the thread in suggestions and learned from posters that the suggestion had a history. Expense, size were raised as issues and I think someone also suggested UserVoice which I at the time knew nothing about. In any case I thank you for the clarification. Is there anyway of tracking implementation of prior suggestions?

    Edit: Found the post. http://community.logos.com/forums/p/42969/320060.aspx

Graham's post as to history contains a post from none other than Bob who reports that Logos had attempted to get the rights but were unsuccessful. Interesting stuff. I don't know where I got the UserVoice notion from. Thanks.

If you mean resource suggestions: only by keeping an eye on new CPs and prepubs. Though sometimes someone will remember that there's been a Suggestion thread and post an update to it when the resource turns up.
