Be careful with upgrade cost calculator

I just upgraded to 5, and I haven't had much time to use it yet. But I wanted to caution anyone who is thinking of upgrading to get a screen capture of the upgrade cost. It seems that my cost as shown on the web page was a little bit too low. (about 5%). I ordered the upgrade, and didn't notice the difference in price until I got the confirmation email. When I called customer service, they could not get their calculator to display the price I had seen, so I am out of luck (they did issue me a credit toward future purchases). They said if I had taken a screen capture, they would have honored it. Lesson learned.

For some reason I decided to get a screenshot of the upgrade price on Nov 2. When I went back to the page today, the prices had changed. Each upgrade level's price had dropped by about half.

Of course, this is in my favor, so I'm not complaining. But if I'd jumped on the upgrade last Friday, I'd be pretty upset.

I'm going to continue to monitor the price and see if it keeps fluctuating.

I'm sure the price hasn't changed that much. if you log in, it can figure your upgrade based on what you have bought previously, and whether or not you have an academic discount. I suspect you hadn't logged in when the price was higher. That happened to me once, and the price was a good bit higher (almost $1000), but it was because I hadn't logged in.

You were probably on a different page on Friday. I very nearly made the same mistake. If you were on www.logos.com/5, or www.logos.com/comparison, then you get much higher prices than at www.logos.com/upgrade, even though the pages look very similar

Logos should really redirect existing users to /upgrade to avoid the problem.

I do not think the upgrade calculator is looking at our library at all (for some reason).

This may appear to be the case, but it is not. You will never need to buy something twice.

Certain sets, the NAC commentaries for example have grown. Assuming you own the former 38 books, take note that there are now 40 books in that set. Many examples like this exist. You would only be charged for those two extra resources. Dan Pritchett explained the upgrade calculator here.

Hmm, I can't recall where the thread was in the hundreds that have happened in these last few days but I am certain that I read something about the verbum upgrade. I suspect a call to customer service would certainly fix this as well.

I didn't take a screen shot previously because why would it be necessary! This is disturbing. How can their "calculator" change? I'm waiting for a while to analyze the budget to see if I can swing the Portfolio, but may get priced out. [:(]

Coming to think of it, I can think of one reason why prices may have gone up. Somewhere there's a post where an employee said they'd found that several resources were missing from the list. If they have now added those resources, and they are resources you don't own, that might conceivably affect the price.

that rings a bell. I searched history and printed out the upgrade.htm page from yesterday and printed it with today's upgrade.htm. If something was added it's in the Portfolio section. I'll compare and see.

I was speaking to my sales rep today via email and he mentioned that they were having problems with teh dynamic pricing. I took this screenshot. Before this I was due to be charged $470 for my upgrade to Gold. Then I saw this...$359 for Platinum! I took a screen shot to show my rep. I never expected to get it for that price as it was a bug in the system and hardly fair for Logos.

Looking at another Logos 4 Platinum user's upgrade screen, noticed Portfolio discount is now 25 % instead of 30 %. The upgrade page now has 15 % for Platinum, 20 % for Diamond, and 25 % for Portfolio.

Suggest calling Logos sales.

Thomas, hopefully this will help you to know that you were not just seeing things. There is an inconsistency in the upgrade calculator that needs to be looked into.

Because of your suggestion, I took these screenshots. The first one was before adding the L5 Portfolio upgrade to my cart. After adding the upgrade to my cart, I looked at the price in the cart, and it was $175.14 more expensive. When I returned to the the upgrade page, my upgrade price reflected the new increased price and showed a smaller overall discount. These screenshots were taken 3 minutes apart.

I will wait for all the bugs to get worked out before considering an upgrade.

that is owned in your library when we calculate your discount. We are
working on some changes to the comparison chart and the upgrade page to do a better job of showing you what you do not own, and what you own partially, and to make sure that our pricing is consistent everywhere.

We also fixed a bug in our additional discounts which should be consistent and accurate on the website now.

There are two levels of discount that we are currently offering: dynamically priced discount based on your ownership (See Dan's post for more on this); and an additional upgrade discount. We first calculate your price based on your ownership, then discount that price by an additional percentage. We did change Portfolio's additional discount from 30% to 25% today which accounts for the price difference reported earlier in this thread.

I hope the changes we will be making bring sufficient clarity to this.

Thanks Nathan but I really don't mind. I got a good price for my upgrade to Gold (at one point Gold was $0.00! Now that is a bargain. The upgrade page is terrible in terms of switching between packages. I worked out I had to click on the package and then make sure I didn't move across another package with the mouse and then click all resources! But don't stress, it has been a busy few days! [:)]

I upgraded from Portfolio L4 to Portfolio L5 and I don't think I got an additional discount of 30%. I should have taken a screenshot but I seem to remember something about 15% or 20% discount on Portfolio. Based on my reading of the forum, the confusion is not just a case of presentation on the website (which is what Dan had mentioned in his post). There really appears to be some randomness in the pricing.

How can I trigger a review of my upgrade cost that does look at the price and the day of upgrade, and does not simply state "all is fine" (which seems to be the standard reply from Logos here on the forum)?

Thanks Keep Smiling. I extracted a upgrade.htm from Saturday's history just to see and that seems not to be the case. Due to finances I'm waiting as long as possible to see if I can get the resources to go with Portfolio, It was borderline - now with Monday's increase not doable. A year and a half from now I'll have more money, I just may wait until then. I'm not using all of Logos 4 yet anyway.

I have a concern. I purchased the silver upgrade which does not include the Bible Sense Lexicon. My understanding is that if I had waited then I could have gotten every one of the new features for less than I paid for the silver upgrade. I really only wanted to pay for the upgrade and not new books but I was told this was not an option. Am I stuck with an upgrade that is not fully functional unless I spend several hundred dollars more to get the gold version with the bible sense lexicon? I really don't have the money to do this. Will the Bible Sense lexicon be available separately for far less money? I am trying to see if I should ask for a refund and just wait to get everything for $100 or less.

Unfortunately your sales person's information was incomplete.

First, take note that your current package may enable you to have extra discounts.

Second, You can call logos and get a no hasle refund if you decide that is what you want to do.

Third take note of Bob's note here: Official: Minimum Crossgrade and free engine download are coming! and take action based upon what is said there. it is not yet known if the Bible Sense Lexicon will be in that minimum crossgrade - but Bob hints that some of the data sets will be.

I never saw 30% either. I assumed either because (a) Lower discounts were being used for educational pricing, or (b) more likely, the higher discount required a certain spend and I never reached that spend because I already had lots of the resources.

Yes. You own Portfolio already. The percentage discounts are steeper for customers who currently own lesser Logos 4 base packages. Platinum owners get 25% and Gold and lower get 30%. 20% is the correct discount when going from an older Portfolio to Logos 5 Portfolio.

Yeah, it sure seems like the sales department wants us to max our upgrade:

What do others with L4 OLL get?

I recommend dividing the price at the far right (Your price) with Reg. The discounts above the labels say something completely different: Starter 15% off, Bronze 20% off, Silver-Diamond 25% off, Portfolio 30% off.

I'm disapointed with the Platinum price offered to me. The difference is not that much to Gold. Diamond discount for me is 65% but it contains ABSOLUTELY NOTHING additional that I want except the Greek Audio New Testament so it's definately not an option + that it's like 3-4 times above my budget and I would not be helped by a payment plan.

Are they thinking that I afford to pay a whole lot for additional commentaries since I own the Hermeneia/Continental -set (which I got on a sale, the sale is probably not taken into consideration about or I don't know whether I would get a better discount on Platinum because the set was on as sale or a worse discount), one International Critical Commentary volume (which I bought on a 3 month payment plan, together with the Good News Translation, the only time I've had to use a payment plan and the only time I will), one volume of Believer's Church Bible Commentary (I intended to get more, and the set is in Platinum), and yet one more commentary which is misc??

Can the Greek Audio New Testament be added separately? It's not available in base-packages Platinum and lower.

Sure: http://www.logos.com/product/4207/greek-audio-new-testament - a very affordable resource, considering what it does. People need to have a supporting NA27 bible, but this shouldn't be a problem for your OLL package.

A further update: I managed to speak with Dave Kaplan and I’m sorted out now with the upgrade and some other resources I was interested in. However, he confirmed what the other Logos sales person told me about them being unable to discount the Portfolio -> Portfolio upgrade price further from what is shown on the website. Incidentally, the sales staff sound like they’re overwhelmed at the moment, so it’s probably a good idea to cut Logos some slack as they handle what is obviously an exceptionally busy period for them.

What happened was actually that it matters so little to me, that I didn't even follow my own advice: I didn't look carefully and the price offered to me seemed so high - so I supposed it was 0%.
So as a matter of fact what I accidentally did was to round off to 0%. Anything below a discount of 50% I consider to be no discount at all.

The greater discount for Gold and Platinum is probably caused by a combination of (1) discount because you own resources in Gold and Platinum, but you don't own any in Bronze and Starter; and (2) discount applied to encourage you to upgrade to a higher package.

I gave the options some thought last night and any option is about as good as any other, except the middle base-packages are not as good options, and the Gold base-package is not that good.

What discounts do others with L4 Original Languages get?

What annoys me the most is that an upgrade would give me a whole bunch of books that are worthless to me - I would hide almost all of them. There's just a few usable, such as The Fundamentals (4 vols.), Concise Oxford English Dictionary, 11th ed. (which I would value to $20) on top of the dictionary I allready have from OLL, BDAG, NA28, Believer's Church Bible Commentary (BCBC), Bernard of Clairvaux: Between Cult and History, Baker Encyclopedia of Psychology and Counseling, 2nd ed. (which I would value to $30), Septuagint items, Lexham items, Today's Handbook for Solving Bible Difficulties (which I would value to $12),

It's annoying, to say the least, to get such items like additional English Bibles (I would not use them and I would hate paying for them, and I already have bought 1992 Good News Translation individually and it's good), Calvin's commentaries, commentary sets of no use. I'm thinking of the option to just take the big crossgrade and sherry-pick the titles I actually want, that way I would know I only support what I want to support and would feel a bit better!
