Say What? Libronix no longer supported????
Well we knew it had to happen. Libronix 3 must eventually fade away as the whispers of Logos 5 get louder. I am talking about the new de-velopment in the downloading of Libronix files from the Logos website.
There are some files that just do not run under Libronix 3, files like Biblical People, Places, and Things, along with the Perseus Collections. But most of the resources sold will work with both L3 and L4 versions. When we purchased downloadable resources our invoice contained an option to download the files to a "previous version" installation. That option is now GONE. Not only is it missing from the new invoices, it has been purged from all our previous invoices.
THIS IS NOT GOOD.
If you think, "Fine, I will just use the "Librinox downloadable files" at the bottom of my order page.", Think again. Logos has not given us any Libronix file links for resources that have shipped the last couple of days. In other words, The Expositors Bible can not be installed to Libronix.
Please, Logos, tell me you are just caught in a server switch and will have support for Libronix restored soon. I would hate to think we will lose Libronix before Logos 4 has reached maturity.

- The "Download Instructions for Previous Versions" is once again available on the Order Summary page. There, you'll find the button that unlocks and downloads the files, just as before. Note, however, that this section appears for all products, including new products that don't work in L3. (This is why we removed it site-wide.) In the future, it will only appear for relevant products.
- We have posted a list of resources that still work in Libronix.

- Most of our users have never heard of Libronix. Not only is this list not relevant to them, but making it too public and accessible would cause confusion, prompt questions, etc..
- Most of our users who have heard of Libronix are now using Logos 4. This list is no longer relevant to them, either.
- Most remaining Libronix users do not purchase new resources. As a rule, they are infrequent users, they don't upgrade or update their software, and they don't buy new books. This list is relevant to them, but they're not looking for it.

So they still support Libronix. They just don't tell you how to get the files.

So please tell us Todd. How do I get my latest Pre-Pubs into Libronix?
btw: I did not make up the news flash. It came from the mouth of a Logos employee. Maybe that employee got it wrong but they said "Nothing shipping from 2012 on will run under Libronix. "
I am sending Bob Pritchett an email with this thread linked. Hope he tells us it ain't so!

Download the files from ftp.logos.com to your Libronix resources directory, and synchronize your licenses in Libronix. The files will be named the same as the Logos4 ones, except they will have the .lbxlls extension instead of the .logos4 extension. You can find the Logos4 filenames by going to the support information portion of the info pane in the resource window.
Edit: here are links (EDIT2: forum software doesn't like "ftp" links had to remove the "link"):

I'm sorry our announcement is late; we are planning to drop support for Libronix edition of new releases. It's been over 2 years since we moved to Logos 4, and most of our users have moved to it.
As we add more functionality and support for richer tagging to Logos 4, it's harder and more time-consuming to build Libronix-compatible editions. And while there are still Libronix users, they typically aren't frequent/active purchasers of new content. (They are increasingly, by definition, people who don't upgrade/buy a lot of new things.)
We believe the time is right to drop Libronix support on new releases so that we can put our resources into other efforts.
I know many people do still use Libronix, and we're not disabling it, we're just not going to keep putting more and more effort into supporting it with new releases. I apologize for the disconnect between the change in releases and the announcement; if you need to return a resource we'll be happy to help you with that.

I was just thinking about uninstalling Libronix from my computer as I can't remember the last time I opened it. I am really happy with all the improvements we have seen over the last two years and as soon as we get notes and highlighting on ios I will be ecstatic! I know some people will complain but I just wanted to say thanks Bob, I'm sure the reallocated labor will pay off in an even better L4 experience.
Okie dokie, Bob. Let's try to clarify (since the details don't match the above).
1. Are people able to download 'any' L3 resources they've purchased in 2012? The above indicates you're still sending emails with licenses.
2. Are we safe in concluding the credits we were promised in 2011 are now not supportable in Libronix3? Note that the 1 month delay was not mentioned in your Christmas sale verbage (though the delay is understandable).
I ask #2 (along with #1) since I had assumed that indeed you'd stop shipping L3 resources (so I purchased AYB). But if you're not also going let me download the credits in L3 format (you not having even mentioned your delay during the sale), then yes, we'll need to undo about $2,100 worth of purchases and finish up our relationship.
"If myth is ideology in narrative form, then scholarship is myth with footnotes." B. Lincolm 1999.
But if you're not also going let me download the credits in L3 format
Here's the thing, I still have over 200 resources in Libronix format in Logos4; many of which you can still buy. Logos aren't going to know whether you intend it for Libronix or Logos 4 or both. Same applies to any resource you buy unless its availability is clarified i.e. "Works on".
It's clear that new releases in 2012 won't be "shipped" in Libronix format. So is there is a conflict between Logos' promise of credit and your expectation to use that credit for products in Libronix or is it the lack of a download link in Orders? Note that I think Logos' timing and lack of clarity is abysmal.

It's clear that new releases in 2012 won't be "shipped" in Libronix format
What is clear is Logos has to cut the throat of it's sibling Libronix before Logos can claim the throne. All resources downloading from Logos.com will be Logos 4 only, but all resources shipped from third party publishers will be Libronix format. As long as Logos is still creating the CDs in-house for third party publishers there is going to be a sibling rivalry.
edit: I have just learned this resource will only be produced as a downloadable product. The Libronix CD has been canceled. (Publisher said so.)
The latest third party production I am interested in is the Church of God Digital Library Collection 9 . As best as I can tell it is a downloadable product for Logos 4 (no shipping) see edit note aboveand a CD product for Libronix (marketed by the creator. The future of the Logos user base looks eerily like the divided kingdom stage of Israel & Judah. Will Logos continue to produce Libronix resources for it's closest competitor? What if IVP, CoG, Fortress Press, eNelson and the others don't want to contract for Logos in-house publishing? Scary. Abysmal fits

Well, to be honest, I'm not upset or anything. When L4 came out and we came to understand Bob's vision, we budgeted for a year of L3 resources, figuring he'd close L3 up after a year. When 2011 rolled around, I was dancing around with my spouse on why I was still significantly purchasing throughout 2011.
My only issue is wanting to use my Christmas credit to finish out our 2011 budget (all are pre-existing resources, most of them actually existing back in the heyday of L3).
I'd also would have really liked Meyer in L3 format but I guess I can write it off. Earlier this week, I deleted all my CPs and all nice-to-have pre-pubs. Presuming 2012 resources are L4 only, I'll delete the rest as well.
Again, I've no issue with Bob ... he's a year later than I planned. I'm just waiting to see how we'll close out the 2011 sale.

So much for multi-platform usage of resources.
All under-powered laptops and netbooks need not apply. The same goes for older computers; or for those that do not have good internet connections. If the resource is not available in Biblia or ipad you are out of luck. If you consider hardware requirements for full Logos 4 application; the entry level just got more expensive. It seems that if a resource can be made available to an internet browser it surely could be made available in some form for Libronix, which is browser based, even if all the "advanced functionality and richer tagging" may be crippled. This was my initial criticism of Logos 4 and it still stands. I wonder about the remote missionary or the budget minded user that has hardware related issues. (I just recently upgraded to a new quad-core i7 computer but still run Libronix as well as Logos4 because of some features I don't want to get into now.)
I know many people do still use Libronix, and we're not disabling it, we're just not going to keep putting more and more effort into supporting it with new releases.

Thank you for your business and continued support. Sincerely, Logos"
Bob,
Like some of the other posters here, I too am upset about this drastic change of support with no notice period!
With L3, we could download the install media, the resource files, and our license keys. This permitted a reinstal in the event thatLogos was offline for a time, or forever! Until this last week or so, this protection of our expensive purchases was in place.
Please advise how I can protect my investment with your company now the L3 support is being disabled? How can I ensure my spend on licenses how any hope of outlasting the Logos Company, in the event of some future problems?
We need a full offline install and license-key load please.
This is a CRITICAL matter and may well impact my spending with your company.

Not suggesting for a moment that Logos shouldn't respond to this but just wondered whether Option 1 at http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers would provide some of the capability you are looking for in an L4 context?

I stand corrected. My order page has many section and I haven't looked at the very bottom. I was wrong.
Here is what I saw at first:
when I clicked on the links, I got to the Order Summary which I believed once had a link to libronix autoinstall file (licence and resources).
anyway, when I scrolled to the bottom of my Orders page I saw this:
so, the resource links are still there, but the licence file isn't. It can be had by going Tools>Library Management>Restore Licences

Personally wish for return on Orders page for ability to click on order number, then download update.lbxupd file, which could be run to download many resources in one session (vis clicking on every single resource file on my orders page, which can be quite tedious for bundle and collection purchases).
Adding update.lbxupd files in "Libronix Downloadable Files" section on orders page would be appreciated, knowing that section is essentially becoming static (no new updates).
Keep Smiling [:)]

It's a clean break from Logos' point of view. There is no legacy stuff in Order Summary to confuse people, and Bob has made it clear that additional effort will not be expended in this area.
In any case Users should backup their Libronix resources to a removable drive because their Order page never contained an inventory of every resource they own and neither does the FTP site. This is not new, as Libronix never had a procedure/script to restore missing resources. Although an installation DVD provides an automated way to copy resources to the computer it does not contain every resource on the FTP site.
So backup your resources and your license file!
EDIT: "your" is directed at users, not one individual!

Whoa! Let's all just calm down for a moment... Please don't return all your software or burn down our buildings at least until the weekend is over, and we can get our team together in a room! :-)
First: I'm very sorry for the surprise of this. I take full responsibility. The text development department asked me a month or two ago (I don't even recall when!) if we could stop producing new Libronix-compatible files at the end of 2011, and after hearing all the reasons and expenses, I agreed.
I personally failed to think through all the implications, failed to map "end of this year" to "Christmas special season", and I didn't assign anyone to coordinate communications.
This is my failure, and I'm sorry.
So word did filter through the organization, and people did the things that made sense (like removing the links to the Libronix files in emails, web pages, etc.) but nobody put together a plan. Some things were unanticipated consequences: we are only ending development of new resources in Libronix format, not retiring or hiding existing ones, but the system that shows download information after a purchase is only technically able to show one set of instructions -- it wasn't coded to show different instructions for different books -- so someone went ahead and just stripped Libronix download information out of all the communications, because it wouldn't work for the new releases.
We should have handled the communication better, and provided advance notice. I apologize for this failure.
Some clarification:
- We haven't disabled or taken anything away. While I understand the emotional feeling you may have about this if you hate Logos 4 (or can't run it for some reason), this isn't some sort of theft or betrayal. We provided what you bought. You've been using it for years. It still works today. It even still works in the future, (which is more than you can say for lots of other software after a new version has been released). You have the files we sold you. (Libronix wasn't even sold with a cloud model, so we never promised cloud access to Libronix-format books. None the less, you still have it -- we haven't taken down the FTP site, and have no plans to.)
- We aren't "killing" support, we're just moving the web pages to an archive to avoid confusion for the vast majority of our users, who don't know what Libronix is and found those articles in the way. We're not training new customer service agents in Libronix, but we're not firing the existing team that does know it. We were answering questions about Logos v1.6 (from 1993) and the LLS (1995) till just recently.
- Our cloud-connected Logos 4 works offline, as we have well documented and described. This is much more secure and "back-up-able" than most cloud solutions, which are truly in the cloud and truly inaccessible if the server goes offline. Logos could go dark, and you can run what's on your system. You can use your own local tools to back up your books, your license file, your documents, etc. Back up your system, and run Logos in offline mode, and you're fine indefinitely.
- Your Libronix install, files, and keys need the server even less. So nothing we do -- up to and including going out of business or having our offices wiped out by a tsunami -- takes that away from you. Yes, you need to back up your files rather than counting on an easy download link from the archived orders page. But A) that's the way it was and is with older software -- nothing new, and we aren't taking down the FTP server. You can still get the files.
Time marches on, and technology does as well. I can understand the surprise, and agree we should have communicated the plan in advance. But I think the "I'm going to return everything I ever bought!" and "I've been betrayed!" sentiments are a bit harsh.
Do you expect all software to be supported as-is forever? That every new release will never take away or change anything from the previous? That all new products will be compatible with older products for all time?
Even if you love, love, love Windows XP, when Microsoft announces that some new product will require Vista or later, do you demand a refund of the purchase of your still functioning XP installation? When Apple switched operating systems, and then processors, did you demand a refund for everything you'd bought for OS 9 or Motorola or PowerPC processors?
Really -- is that fair? We haven't disabled what you bought from us. We don't even disable it if you upgrade to the (free) Logos 4 engine -- they run side-by-side! Which is more than you can say for an OS upgrade... The only thing that changed is that we aren't releasing new products for the old platform. (That we did for more than two years actually seems unusual to me.)
With that said, we don't want anyone to feel cheated. We haven't changed our returns policy. If you ordered a pre-pub that shipped in the last week Logos-4-only when you were expecting Libronix, of course we can refund that. If you have outstanding pre-pubs that haven't shipped, you may want to cancel them.
Again, I apologize for the poor communication. I will create a new post explaining our future plans to help prevent this from happening again around Logos 5 and beyond.
-- Bob

Two quick updates:
Kent,
1. How do people ordering a product for L3 get to this list e.g. from the Product Description page?
2. The list would be improved by sorting
As of December 31, 2011, resource files are only shipped in Logos 4
format. The following older resources are still available in Libronix
format.
1. This comment could be improved as it implies that L3 handles "older" product which clearly is not the case with NIV 2011.
2. "are only shipped" is ambiguous when you can get many in L3 format.
Try "As of December 31, 2011, new resource files are only available in Logos 4
format. The following resources are still available in Libronix
format and can be downloaded from the Order Summary page."

1. How do people ordering a product for L3 get to this list e.g. from the Product Description page?
We had an extensive discussion about how to communicate which products work in Libronix and which don't.
We chose not to link to this list from the product pages for a few reasons:
In the list's current location in the Libronix support pages, those who aren't looking for it won't see it, but those who want it will find it.

'WOW' is right.
I think Bob listens to the whiners too much. This just cost him (Logos) a lot of money. Some of that will come back on the rest of us, as we foot the bill for the whiners.
I respect Bob and his decision. He's a better man than I am...that's not the group of folks to whom I would have catered.

I think you missed the point of the original timing upsetting people's plans to use purchase credits gained over Christmas period + orders for what then became L4 only resources. That was lost business (money) due to poor planning.

I too respect and thank Bob for making this right!
There are many customers that purchased the 2010 books for $2010 and other large deals over the December period. Its right they can access the Version 3 files as there had been no early warning or notice prior to purchase. My buying was less than $2000 but still no small amount for me. I welcome being able to download and archive off the L3 install programs, my license file and the resource files.
I expect any so-called wasted money will be less than any harm done if this had not had such an outcome. Again, thank you Bob!
I still want offline install and backup for Logos 4, but thats a battle for another day. I have not yet given up! One day Bob will see what his competitors are doing with offline, Notes and other aspects. We do not all love the Cloud, or not having out own content somewhere we own. I see today one of the companies are announcing their PC version of their application.

I hope Logos has an answer to the question about our licenses and rights were they ever to go out of business. I don't want to have spent thousands of dollars over the years to be locked out and have all my purchased material vanish overnight because Logos shuts its doors. I don't have that fear at the moment, but does Logos think they can endure until the return of Christ?
This is the question that haunts me sometimes.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! [:'(]
Concur my Logos.com orders page no longer has libronix update script links.
Personally wish Logos 4 information for resources would show resource licensing (so know when purchased license, then duplicated), which is available in Libronix 3.

I too no longer have the links for Libronix.
I am sad at this as well. [:'(]
I HATE L4 [:@] but I was able to download the Expositor's Bible to Libronix. The download script was attached to my email notification but no more download links found in our order history page.
I am very sad. [:'(]
If they stop making Libronix resources and change to making ONLY Logos 4 they will lose me as a user. I haven’t bought any resources that are L4 only except for a .99 book (which I copied and made into a PB for Libronix). I have downloaded the free L4 resources but they will not get any more money from me so I hope they continue to make L3 resources so I can give them my money.
Don't you want my money? [:D]
