12 Years a Slave
I just watched 12 Years A Slave (a very good movie). It was so good, it made me want to read the book that it was based upon.
So I grabbed an electronic copy that I could use and made it into a PB.

While we think that these items no longer happen, they do. People are still placed into actual slavery today. In spots, the move (and I am assuming the book too) shows how people used scripture to marginalize/dehuman others simply because the person doesn't look/think/believe like the person in power does. We still use scripture today to marginalize/dehuman others who do not look/think/believe like we do.
Thus, why I wanted this book to be part of my Logos' library.0 -

Just a quick note of clarification:
I did not see the above move starting Avery Brooks. That move was released in 1987, and here is some info on at that movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088148/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_20.
I saw the movie that was released this year and starts Steve McQueen: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2024544/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_1.
I cannot speak about the 1987 movie, but I love how the 2013 version tells Solomon Northup's story. I had to use my C.P.E. skills when I noticed that I was getting angry at the director and others who created this movie. Why was I angry? I am not going to give the details of the movie, but the movie was at one of its uncomfortable scenes, and it didn't move. The movie forced me to be uncomfortable for a long time, and that is what this type of movie needs to do!!!!!

I'm not sure what this thread has to do with Logos. Don't bite me! I have the utmost respect for Tom; he puts his time in, matching his beliefs. And expresses his beliefs where others fear to tread.
But for me the whole subject is the utmost in hypocracy (I'm speaking here from the Christianity perspective; not civil rights, etc). I was pretty OK with slavery (the logic) in the NT until I read Didache. Followed by the apostolic and thense church fathers, who clearly had to demonize slaves to accomodate theological acceptance. The apologetic problem occurs when its time to 'spread the gospel'. Didache illustrated that slaves needed permission from masters. And Christianity recognized that permission (and stilll does), effectively delivering slaves to their doom (post-death). Presuming one believes the NT anyway.
And so looking at an 1830s behavior and shaking our collective heads, ignores that the theology remains.

There are a dearth of resources giving guidance to the Church of what Christ had to say or not say about hot-button topics such as slavery. In this class I would include other topics such as the Holocaust, the dispossession of the aboriginal peoples of life and land and even war. The hollow silence is not guidance nor is it acceptable theology. The Love of God should lead us to repentance. Anything short of this generates the torpor we find ourselves in today. I love and respect you Denise and believe your reproof was heartfelt.

This is precisely why dodging tough topics is flat out wrong. Logos produces and supplies resources that there is or will be a demand for. So, look at the silent reaction this simple post has generated. There is a thirst for guidance on topics such as these. So, this is certainly not off topic and Logos should get the hint. The Church should lead and not follow in this arena.

Beloved ... was reading Pope Francis' latest (actually first apparently ... I'm not Catholic so I can easily be wrong). But how refreshing. He's presumably speaking to Catholics, but Christianity in general would benefit.

Personally I embrace those who have recognized Jesus the Christ of God as Savior and Lord. I believe as Christ himself said in John:"the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth." Since one of my dearest friends is Catholic I have fellow-shipped with his family and shared communion and perceived the sincere love of God in their presence.
As far as the present Pope is concerned I respect the humility and courage of the man. I believe he is sincere and wants to be a light to the precious people of God he is leading.
