Hope this works well. I think Mobile Ed is a great idea, but the price can be somewhat prohibitive.

Sounds interesting. While the current bid may seem high to those not yet into mobile ed. the opening bid is a lot less than similar length courses by others at the pre-pub prices....

I am definitely in on this one! I love BW3!

I would like to hear his take on what happened on Malta (per his bio blurb), but alas it is published by Brill, so I probably will have to do without--the oxygen just isn't thick enough for me at the altitudes Brill likes to price its products.

I'm certainly not wanting to get into a theological debate, but just out of curiosity, what is it in the promo that you disagree with?

I've brought this up previously...I have an issue with the whole genre approach--reading history as history, reading poetry as poetry, reading gospels and gospels (biography), letters as letters, apocalyptic as apocalyptic, prophecy as prophecy, and so on. It has this air of homespun wisdom (well, of course that's what we should do! Isn't it delightfully and reflexively obvious?), but aside from being a tautology, it is based on a falsehood. Witherington says that "Revelation is the only full book of prophecy we have in the NT", but that is bunk. Even moreso than is true of the OT, every book of the NT is prophetic. The idea behind the genre approach is that since this is ________ genre, we should expect to see ________ and we should not expect to see ________. That's a recipe for failure on two fronts. The Bible isn't written in Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic. It's written in prophecy.

Wow! The projected price is now down to $105. I sure hope this is a success.

It's great to see the excitement for this! Dr. Witherington was a delight to have in the studio, and he produced some really top-notch course content. You certainly won't be disappointed with this--it's great information communicated with a large dose of charisma.

You have a good point there: the primary objective is to get this over the bar at 100% so that it gets into production.
Too much focus on the secondary objective of getting the price down can put this into "limbo" at 40 to 50% of the funding required to produce it and if additional bidders then dry up it can languish for years (per past experience with some higher priced items in Community Pricing). There is not (yet) an infinite sized market for mobile ed. so bid a reasonably high amount (still a bargain compared to regularly priced mobile ed courses.) Avoid the temptation to bid low if you really want to see this in production.
Many of the following have been "stuck" for quite some time....

Bump! Hope more people bid and make this experiment a success.

I think there too many people underbidding on this one. If the low bidders upped to the $80-90 range I think this would go over. I'm in at $105 and think that is a great value.

Patience...there is zero chance this doesn't cross the line. I'm okay with it taking a month or two longer and coming in $20-30 cheaper. If you save $20-30 4-5 times you've saved $100-150. I'm far more likely to make a habit of these things if they come in closer to $75 than if they are over $100 each.

I wholeheartedly agree. I would probably go for everything from MobileEd at $50 per course.

Agreed, I would love to have more of these courses, but they are just too outrageously priced.

I don't think they are outrageously priced (a few do seem quite steep), they're just generally too rich for poor, pitiful me.

I agree that this will make it across the line. It's already been filmed and sooner or later enough people will bid to get it across the line at some price point. But that does not make it a success.
I doubt Logos would put more of these on CP if they all go across at $30. There has to be some threshold at which putting them on CP is less profitable than putting them in PP because while the amount needed to fund the production will be reached on either CP or PP, having more bidders on CP subtracts from the pool of people that will eventually buy it at full price. Granted, there are also a number of people who will never buy it a PP price which is also subtracted from that pool. There has to be a place where the equation doesn't balance in Logos favor, and thus not in our favor.
I'm not sure I'm smart enough to explain my thinking very well, and I may be wrong, but that's where I'm coming from. It's definitely not that I want to pay more. I'm just not sure where that equation balances out best for everyone so that we see more of these on CP. My -shot in the dark- guess would be somewhere around $70-90, give or take. There definitely is a point at which Logos can profit more by putting it on PP instead of CP.

Bob said years back that he doesn't care if he sells CP stuff at 1000 for $1 or 1 for $1000--it's all the same to him. Given that he seems quite concerned with beefing up the Logos catalog, I'm not sure that he is very concerned with setting a sweet spot...he appears content to let one form "naturally" (if the often bizarro herd mentality that is CP can count as "naturally").

I think that putting these on CP has several positive impacts beyond reaching production treshold:
- increased awareness in the forums. PrePubs that just enter the assembly line and get shipped at the end don't create threads with much visibility, sometimes Logos "suddenly" has a resource that wasn't there when last looked for. Bah. Logos likes it when people discuss resources and promote them by linking, by writing suppportive posts and keeping threads like this current. CP resources tend to facilitate this.
- MobileEd currently seems not to raise many waves and thus - especially given the high prices that exclude people like me - maybe has a smaller than expected userbase (I may be wrong here). I tend to think that a user who owns one m.Ed resource is much more likely to buy a second one etc.
- Logos sometimes tries to milk early adopters for higher revenues and then to try a mass-market approach. The CP route allows them to sell the (too) expensive resources to a larger group without openly lowering the asking price dramatically. They do this with some other self-produced products as well (and successfully).
- The MobileEd courses will introduce users to Faithlife groups and to additional resources. And users may tell friends (=potential users) of it. Thus 10 * 500 is not the same as 50 * 100 since the effect on "exposition to the deeper Logos network" and "exposition to additional resource-buying opportunities" plus "potential multiplication by word of mouth/facebook/..." is five times higher.
Since we know that https://www.logos.com/product/42481/logos-mobile-education-nt221-the-wisdom-of-john-a-socio-rhetorical-commentary-on-johannine-literature is currently #8 on the CP bestselling list (the first four or so are stuck there for ages, and Bob once wrote that practically everyone who does CP at all has a bid on them), it seems those things may work out. I hope Logos puts more of them there.
Have joy in the Lord!
