New Feature: Personal Book Upload

What is it?

Personal Book Sync allows you to automatically download compiled personal books on other desktop installations.

How does it work?

After compiling a Personal Book, the “Upload” button will appear when selecting the resource from the list. After uploading a Personal Book, the PB will be downloaded on other Windows/Mac installations (v. 5.3 and above) when updating resources.

Will personalized books show up on devices such as smart phones and tablets as well?

Will personalized books show up on devices such as smart phones and tablets as well?

    Not at this time.

Seriously?  You mean the personalized books are uploaded into the cloud, but not downloaded back onto my iPad?  That seems a little incredible and very annoying since this is exactly what I was hoping to use this function to do -- so that I could read on my tablet.

I don't need my PB's indexed on my mobile device, I just want to read them. Just my feelings.

    Is this option available now?

I meen, is it possible to read downloaded books on ipad?

I had not tried this out before, but here is what I am seeing with the book I just recomplied:

The Upload button is greyed out and non-functional.

I was able to upload several PPB made more than a year ago, but one I could not because the upload button was greyed out for this one docx  PBB.  Is ther a size limitation?  I think my PBB file was about 40 MB.  Cool feature, though.  I have not synched my Mac to the uploaded PBB yet.

I don't remember the size limit but there is one.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

I think the file limit is 20Mb on the compiled book.

This is my personal Faithlife account. On 1 March 2022, I started working for Faithlife, and have a new 'official' user account. Posts on this account shouldn't be taken as official Faithlife views!

I think the file limit is 20Mb on the compiled book.

My obviously small books upload but the big ones (like the screenshot above) will not. I can always try dividing them up. It would be nice to know what the size limit is.

Edit: I have a monster in there (384,000 KB). (Bet Mark knows what that one is.) Two other big ones at 156,000 KB and 60,000 KB. Those last two would take a little effort to divide up.

I'm glad the feature is there but... I pay $3.00 a month for a hosting plan that includes unlimited online storage and data transfer (FTP).  Microsoft gave me 1 Terabyte of storage for OneDrive with an Office purchase.  I have a 4 Terabyte hard drive at home that I keep online.  For the price we pay for the software a 20M cap is laughable at best.  Just design a way for me to store my library on my own server if it's too expensive for you.  This isn't the 90's.

    DGB.

This issue is being discussed in a number of places including https://community.logos.com/forums/t/88381.aspx

Out of interest do you have an estimate of how many Personal Books you might have that are larger than 20MB? I expect this sort of information would be useful to the Faithlife team

100+ easy.. and like others quite a few really large files.  I like the ancient Greeks.  Encyclopedias. Oxford.  Cambridge.  I read the other thread and I'd rather not pay for the service (or have people with expendable income speak for me).  The argument of cheap storage was made there as well.  If there's going to be a cap then I need to sync to Dropbox/OneDrive or even through FTP on my own server, which I'll pay for myself.  I look forward to hearing about a solution.

    DGB.

Oh yes, and I SHOULD be able to access all of my library on any device.  Why wouldn't I?

what is this in response to? Faithlife's philosophy is that you should be able to have access to all of your resources on all of your devices... And that you should only pay once. FL works hard with publishers to accomplish this, and most of the time they are successful.

Thanks for clarifying - and, for future reference, it is helpful if you can "quote" posts so that it is clearer what you are referring to.

In this case it looks as thought you were referring to the issue of not being able to sync Personal Books on your mobile device.

I, and many others, agree that this would be nice but we don't when when / if it might be made available

    And welcome to the forums.

After our training I was very excited about this feature as I was hoping to scan and import a lot of my personal library into this software - but I, too, worry about the 20MB cap, as I have a lot of books that I am guessing (once I get scanned in, would be over that.  I also have some I was hoping to have high quality scans done as I really wanted to make sure the images were captured well (which would mean a hefty file size).  I have to agree with the "cheapness" of storage these days, a 20MB cap seems pretty small given the price of the software itself - as good as it is.  Perhaps, as one suggested, a way of integrated "local storage" for those files so they aren't uploaded to your servers - even if it means downloading them on each computer and using your servers as a "temporary storage" and have them delete from there once they download/sync.

I also have a few other questions:

Is there a way to import OCR optimized PDF's instead of Word Documents?

Can we add categories  I have a bunch of scanned articles I would like to add, but that isn't a category listed.

Somewhat separate question, is there a way to suggest books for you to add/develop as actual resources to purchase?

    Many thanks!

    Chris

The Type field is restricted and you should use Monograph (or Magazine/Journal); if this is what you meant by "category".

However, under Add Field choose Subject Heading as below:-

After Building the book you can filter your Library for "Testing" with subject:testing (or subject:"Scanned Articles")

No. The content has to be in a docx file.

I am running Logos on 2 computers. Both are Windows PCs (Win7 and Win10). I built a personal book on 1 computer, but it is too large to upload. Do I have to rebuild that same book on my second computer? Or can I just copy a Personal Book Logos file (not the original docx file) to a flash drive and transfer it to my second computer? If so, where would I find that file on my PC?

    Welcome Bob! [:)]

Alabama24 is always helpful [thanks]  but there is one advantage of moving the docx file to the other machine and rebuilding the PBB there.  You then KNOW that you have a working backup of the docx file as you have used that backup to create the PBB on the second machine.

Absolutely. The link below shows what I do:

Personal Book Sync allows you to automatically download compiled personal books on other desktop installations.

If personal books can now be uploaded to the Logos servers, is it now also possible to share them with a Faithlife group?  It is my understanding that various other types of documents can be shared (see https://documents.logos.com/), but I don't see my personal books that have been uploaded.

No unfortunately not (or: not yet). compiled PBs are no Logos documents, but resources and thus don't show on documents.logos.com and can't be shared among users.

Thanks, Faithlife, for this helpful enhancement, quite useful indeed.

As far as I can tell, the logos help file has not been updated with matching instructions yet. I know uploading is not complicated, but it would be good for those who have not read this thread and wonder what upload does to have explanation in the PBB section of the help file.

Are you thanking them for something more than a year old, or for something new?

How do you delete an uploaded personal book. I noticed on the couple that I uploaded that when I right-click nothing happens, so I can't delete the personal book and start over again.

My practice is to make a new one over the top of an old one which works fine.

I have used a dummy document and book cover and compiled the books with names like AA1..... so they are easy to find. Then when I make a new PB, I just use one of those AA....books and recompile it with new data. Works great for me.

That's because you can't permanently delete a PB after you upload it. You can Hide it as an alternative.
