Collection rules for sorting commentaries (updated for Logos 9 Libraries)
The collections will only work on Logos 7.15 and above. They don't work on mobile. If you need the compatible version, you can find it here.
I've been asked to suggest some collection rules for sorting commentaries. So, here are rules which will create collections that match what I use personally.
The rules cover all the commentary series in every base package between Logos 4 and Logos 8 as well as dozens of other add-on sets (around 4,750 volumes of commentaries from nearly 400 series and more than 2,000 authors). They're used by hundreds of Logos users, and are regularly updated.
If you are using Logos 8, you can easily add these collections to your own Logos installation. (1) Go to the Docs menu. (2) Click on Public. (3) Select "Resource Collections" under the type facet. (4) Click the spyglass and search for "barnes" in the filter. (5) When you see my name, click on it. (6) Click on the row of the first collection you're interested in (but don't click on it's name), then CTRL+click on the others (or CTRL+A to select them all). (7) Click on "Add to your docs".
An alternative method, which is simpler but a little slower, and might work for those not using Logos 8, is to click on each of the links provided below, and then click on "Get Copy".
- Background Commentaries — Get your copy
- Expository Commentaries — Get your copy
- Intermediate Commentaries — Get your copy
- Technical Commentaries — Get your copy
- Historical Commentaries (Antiquity) — Get your copy
- Historical Commentaries (Medieval) — Get your copy
- Historical Commentaries (Reformation) — Get your copy
- Historical Commentaries (1750-1950) — Get your copy
- One Volume Commentaries — Get your copy
- Study Guide Commentaries — Get your copy
- Textual Commentaries — Get your copy
- Special Commentaries — Get your copy
When I update these collections in the future, Logos 8 users will see a notification in their docs menu which will allow you to easily update the collection to the new rules.
If you prefer to manually copy the rules, they're listed below. The rules only cover commentaries that are in a series, whereas the shared collections also include commentaries not in a series. If you want missing commentaries added, just tag them commentary-background, etc., and they'll then be automatically included your copy of the collections.
The power of these collections mostly lies in giving you the ability to create a custom passage guide like the one below, which I strongly recommend. That way you can consult different types of commentaries depending on the questions you're asking the text, and were you are in your study. Personally I use technical commentaries first to answer questions of grammar and basic exegesis, before moving to intermediate commentaries for ideas about what to communicate and basic application, and later to expository commentaries to help me think about illustrations and more specific application.
Background Commentaries — Get your copy
Background Commentaries don’t commentate on the overall meaning of a passage, but provide insights from the historical and cultural background wherever that’s appropriate.
type:bible-commentary ({Series "IVP Bible Background Commentary", "Lexham Geographic Commentary", "Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary","The Bible Knowledge Background Commentary"}, title:("Has God Not Chosen the Poor?", "Manners and Customs of the Bible", "Background Commentary", "The Political Paul"), {MyTag "commentary-background"})
Expository Commentaries — Get your copy
Typically, expository commentaries will discuss the meaning of the Bible text at a fairly simple level. They’ll be simple to read, with plenty of application and illustrations — a bit like a printed sermon. They’ll be hardly any footnotes, and hardly any Greek and Hebrew (which would be transliterated, if used at all).

Intermediate Commentaries — Get your copy
Typically, intermediate commentaries will discuss the meaning of the Bible text, in a serious but not overly-academic way. If they discuss Greek and Hebrew words, those words will be transliterated, and there will be little grammatical analysis. They may acknowledge different interpretations of a passage, but probably only in footnotes. There may be some application for the contemporary church, but that won’t be a main emphasis.

Technical Commentaries — Get your copy
Typically, technical commentaries will be detailed, fairly academic, and emphasise aspects of language and grammar (often using untransliterated Greek and Hebrew). They’ll frequently discuss several possible interpretations of a passage, weighing the different views. They’ll concentrate almost exclusively on what the text would have meant to the original readers, and won’t be concerned about contemporary application.

Historical Commentaries
These are commentaries written before (roughly) WW2. Exegetical methods have changed significantly since then, but these older commentaries give valuable insights into how the Bible has been interpreted in Church History. There are four bands, that coincide roughly with the post-Enlightenment period (late modern), the period of the Reformation, the Middle Ages and the Early Church. The way the Bible was interpreted changed quite significantly at each of those points, so the split is fairly useful (at least to me).

Comments
- your "Technical commentaries" match my "Language commentaries" collection
- your "Expository" is my "exegetical"
- what about your "intermediate," how would you define them?
- Also, do you mark any of your commentaries as Application?
- Technical Commentaries — Typically, technical commentaries will be detailed, fairly academic, and emphasise aspects of language and grammar (often using untransliterated Greek and Hebrew). They’ll frequently discuss several possible interpretations of a passage, weighing the different views. They’ll concentrate almost exclusively on what the text would have meant to the original readers, and won’t be concerned about contemporary application.
- Intermediate Commentaries — Typically, intermediate commentaries will discuss the meaning of the Bible text, in a serious but not overly-academic way. If they discuss Greek and Hebrew words, those words will be transliterated, and there will be little grammatical analysis. They may acknowledge different interpretations of a passage, but probably only in footnotes. There may be some application for the contemporary church, but that won’t be a main emphasis.
- Expository Commentaries — Typically, expository commentaries will discuss the meaning of the Bible text at a fairly simple level. They’ll be simple to read, with plenty of application and illustrations — a bit like a printed sermon. They’ll be hardly any footnotes, and hardly any Greek and Hebrew (which would be transliterated, if used at all).
- Background Commentaries — Background Commentaries don’t commentate on the overall meaning of a passage, but provide insights from the historical and cultural background wherever that’s appropriate.

The "Historical Commentaries (1750-1950)" incorrectly grabs the following commentaries:
- Explanation of the Apocalypse by Bede
- Catena Aurea
- Commentary on the Gospel According to John by Cyril of Alexandria
- A Commentary on the Psalms from Primitive and Mediaeval Writers, vol. 1-4
- Morals on the Book of Job by Gregory the Great
- many of the volumes from the Early Church Fathers series
- Robert Bellarmine's "A Commentary on the Book of Psalms"
- The Great Commentary of Cornelius à Lapide, vol. 1-8
- ...some may prefer excluding the ICC series here, leaving it only in the Technical section
And, I see that you included Alphonsus Liguori in the Reformation section. He piggybacks that section and this one. If you want to unify where he appears - his "The Divine Office: Explanation of the Psalms and Canticles" (written around 1775) appears in this collection.
The "Historical Commentaries (1750-1950)" incorrectly grabs the following commentaries:
This is a known issue. In my original post I said:
The 1750-1950 period tries to use publication dates to increase the number of volumes, but in so doing catches a few earlier commentaries that were republished at that time. You can either remove the dates from the filter, or add the other historical collections into the "minus these resources" section.
(I added this about five minutes after I originally posted, so you may have missed it. I'll move it to a more prominent location.)

Many thanks for your work on this. It will be a fantastic help in our studies, keeping us much better organized and making it easier to find what we need.
Mark, thank you very much for these time-saving rules!
I do have a question, however:
I am organizing my commentaries a little differently. I have the following categories: Language, Exegetical, Application, non-versified, and Critical.
I assume, that
Taken from my site:
I guess my "technical" would line up with your "language" and "critical", and my "expository" with your "application". I'm not sure what "exegetical" could mean in this context, sorry (though I think Morris uses it).
I've now added this section to my original post, to help others.

Mark, I've used the categories described on your site to tag all of my commentaries for a while now. Thanks for taking time to articulate your understanding of the specific distribution of commentaries. I will be cross-referencing your list with mine. You are indeed a blessing to this community.

Just to let you all know that I've updated the first post with most of the suggested corrections, plus a few of my own.
I've also modified the rules so that they also add commentaries with certain tags. That should make it easier for you to add in commentaries of your own choosing, that are missed because they're not in series.

Thanks for the update Mark;
For some reason, Logos/Faithlife has labeled the Psalms volume of "Not your average Bible Study" as type:monograph, thus only 11 volumes from the series are listed. I'm not sure if the type was mislabeled or not (I just noticed it).
What I have done (for the time being) is added it to the "+ Plus these resources" panel in the collection rule.
I've updated the rules in the first post. The changes are:

And I've just added Rushdoony Commentaries on the Pentateuch to Intermediate and The Hebrew Bible and Its Versions to Technical. Sorry! They were both included in the recently released The Genesis Collection (125 vols). The other commentary collections for John and Revelation were already covered.

Thanks so much Mark. How about doing some for journals? I know that is a bunch to ask so forgive my forwardness.
Journals is an interesting question. I've not thought about that before. How would you see journals being categorised?
Would that suit everyone? Would it be useful to separate very old journals? If so, before when? Pre 1970s? Pre 1960s? Pre war? 19th century?

Complete Series by Old and New Testament
1. OT commentaries:
type:commentary subject:bible-.O.T.
2. NT commentaries:
type:commentary subject:bible-.N.T.
These will include individual OT or NT volumes in a series and single-volume OT or NT commentaries, but a "complete" NT or OT corpus is not guaranteed e.g. it will include a single-volume commentary on Revelation.
Complete Series that include Old and New Testament Commentaries
A dynamic rule for series that include both the OT and NT corpus is difficult to define, so you might have to name each series e.g. series:Barnes OR series:Expositors
A rule for single-volume commentaries with both OT and NT books is:
type:commentary subject:bible-commentaries

Hi Mark, thanks again for updating those.
Just a note, I could not get some of them to work when I first used them, until I changed the last part of some of the lists from
... -series:"The Church Pulpit Commentary"
to
... ANDNOT series:"The Church Pulpit Commentary"
I'm not sure why, I tried both the numeric - and the normal keyboard - (beside the , but neither worked.
Just mentioning this in case it helps others.
I've updated the collection rules on the first page to add the following:
It would be nice to include all the commentaries from all the base packages — but as I don't own them all, that's currently not possible, although I think I'm only missing four series.
If you have these, perhaps you could post the exact series name and which category you think it falls into. I'm also missing the following sets, which are not in a base package:
There may well be others, too. If you know of any commentary series that are missing, and can let me know the details I'd be glad to add them.
(I'm NOT intending to update the collections with non-English sets, or commentaries that aren't part of a series.)

Thomas Summers' Commentaries on Matthew, Mark, and Luke (Platinum)
No series name is applied to this set
I haven't used it but from a quick look I would class it as Intermediate and "Historical Commentaries (1750-1950)"
Whedon's Commentary on the Old and New Testaments (Silver+)
Series name is "A Popular Commentary on the New Testament" and I'd categorise it the same as Summers
John Stott Bible Studies
Series name is "John Stott Bible Studies" and I'd class them as "Study Guide Commentaries"
If you have these, perhaps you could post the exact series name and which category you think it falls into. I'm also missing the following sets, which are not in a base package:
This is labeled as: "Jon Courson's Application Commentary"
I guess I'd put it wherever you have the NIVAC or Wiersbe. It is a little more in depth than say the Life Application Study Bible but I don't think it hit's the realm of Expository. I am no commentary expert though. See excerpt below
These both belong in the Expository class. Probably Walk! Messianic Jewish Devotional Commentary Collection does as well.
This is essentially one volume on OT/one on NT that I would place as "One volume" ... or "Expository" if you insist
Ancient Christian Writers has 8 volumes for Antiquity
Commentaries of Theodore of Mopsuestia has 2 volumes for Antiquity
Rick Brannan's Lexical Commentary on the Pastoral Epistles is either Technical or Textual
Sorry - I've got to leave so this is incomplete
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."
Series that appear to not be included:
Recognizing that many of the relevant resources are not type:BibleCommentary format I use the following collections:
For lectionary based commentaries:
series:("The Word for Every Sunday", "The Word for Every Season", "Series Ministeria", "Scriptures for the Church Season", "Lectionary Reflections (Jane Williams)", "The Lectionary Commentary", "Feasting on the Word","Scriptures for the Church Season","Lift up Your Hearts","Preparing for Worship","Fortress Resources for Preaching","Lent for Everyone","Sermons for the Christian Year","Timeless Homilies for Deacons")
A number of resources are not in series and are added manually - I'll list if anyone cares
For Bible study guide:
I include your collection within mine and use:
series:("3E Ministries Study Guides", "30 Days to Understanding","Adult Bible Studies (ISSL) Cokesbury", "Africa Bible Commentary Series","Back Side","Bible Lessons International","Catholic Scripture Study","Come and See: Catholic Bible Study","Courageous nnnn","David C. Cook Bible Lesson Commentary","Elizabeth George Bible Studies for Women","Exploring the Bible Commentary","Exploring the Testaments","Good Questions Have Small Groups Talking","Hearts Aflame Scripture Study","The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible","Kingdom Series","Life Lessons","MacArthur Bible Studies","Made Easy","Men of Character","New Inductive Study Series","The New International Lesson Annual","Opening Up Commentary","A Revival Kinglings Bible Study Course","Simple Church Bible Study Guide","Scriptures for the Church Season","Spirit Filled Life","Standard Bible Studies","Standard Lesson Commentary","Stonecroft Bible Studies","Studies in Faithful Living","Studies on the Go","Turning Point","Walk Thru The Bible","Walk! Messianic Jewish Devotional Commentary","The Wiersbe Bible Study Series","Wiersbe's 'Be' Series","The Word in Life Bible Discovery Series","Adult Bible Studies","Daily Bible Study","Shepherd's Notes","Unlocking the Bible Story","The Wiersbe Bible Study Series","Do-It-Yourself Bible Studies","Everyman's Bible Commentary" )
Again there are a few items not in series.
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Mark, had you seen this post? I see several appear to still be missing. The new collections picked up only 8 additional titles for me.
Other series I'd place in expository are:
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."
Historical Commentaries (Antiquity)
type:bible-commentary (series:("A Library of Fathers of the Holy Catholic Church", "Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture", "Cyril of Alexandria’s Commentary on John", "Early Church Fathers", "The Church’s Bible", "The Fathers of the Church") OR mytag:commentary-antiquity)
Mark, for some reason I noticed that five commentaries by Origen in "The Fathers of the Church" series are failing to appear in this collection even though I've used the rule above. I have also tagged those with "commentary-antiquity", but still no success. Obviously, I could just drag them there, but don't see why the above rule isn't working. Some other books from the series, i.e., Jerome, Augustine and Chrysostom (I don't have the entire series yet) are showing up, but not Origen. After doing a search for the series in my library, I have noticed that a commentary by Hilary of Poitiers also isn't appearing.
Any thoughts?
Mark, for some reason I noticed that five commentaries by Origen in "The Fathers of the Church" series are failing to appear in this collection even though I've used the rule above. I have also tagged those with "commentary-antiquity", but still no success.
Short answer: Logos has them as type=monograph, rather than type=bible-commentary.
Long answer: Most of these missing books are not really commentaries. For example, were Origen's Commentary on the Gospel according to John published today, we would probably call it "A theology of John", rather than a commentary on John.
That's less true with his commentary on Romans, but even there he doesn't refer to specific chapters and verse numbers as he works through the text (even though he is actually working through the text verse-by-verse). I think you could make a case that Logos should include verse milestones, and update the metadata to a commentary for Romans. Perhaps it would be helpful to start a new thread, requesting that they do so for that and any similar volumes. If they do so, it would then appear in the collection (and in the commentaries section of the passage guide).

Thanks, that's a fair point.
Meant to ask why the collection didn't include those books when I tagged them myself with the the tag, "commentary-antiquity", which, according to the collection's rule, should have included those in the collection.
I think the rule is written to include only type bible-commentary. You cite it as:
type:bible-commentary (series:("A Library of Fathers of the Holy Catholic Church", "Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture", "Cyril of Alexandria’s Commentary on John", "Early Church Fathers", "The Church’s Bible", "The Fathers of the Church") OR mytag:commentary-antiquity)
which translates to
type:bible-commentary AND ( series:(.....) OR mytag:commentary-antiquity )
if you want your tagging to override the type, you need to change parentheses, like
(type:bible-commentary AND series:("A Library of Fathers of the Holy Catholic Church", "Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture", "Cyril of Alexandria’s Commentary on John", "Early Church Fathers", "The Church’s Bible", "The Fathers of the Church")) OR mytag:commentary-antiquity
Have joy in the Lord!
Textual Commentaries
Textual commentaries focus on issues of textual criticism.
type:(bible-commentary, bible-notes) AND (title:("The Lexham Textual Notes on the Bible", "A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament", "A Textual Guide to the Greek New Testament"), mytag:commentary-textual)
Here's a title that should be added to the textual commentaries: "New Testament Text and Translation Commentary: Commentary on the Variant Readings of the Ancient New Testament Manuscripts and How They Relate to the Major English Translations"
I know it's a ridiculously long title, but that's how it ships. If someone wants to shorten the title they can adjust the collection rule accordingly. Here's the link to the resource.
Edit: Perhaps the rule could simply account for the title ending at the colon. This should be plenty sufficient for uniquely identify the correct resource.
"Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the ??? Testament")
This rule pulls in ZECNT, but not ZECOT. Any ideas why?
Edit: Nevermind, I got it to work by changing "???" to "New" and back again to "???". Don't ask me why that worked!
Using ??? restrict you to 3 char's
Which is exactly the desired behavior. Both "old" and "new" are three characters, so that rule is as precise as possible without being redundant. Using "*" would open up the possibility of having ALL Zondervan Commentaries in the "Technical" section...not exactly desirable.
I've now updated all the rules in the first post to include all the commentaries included in all the Logos 8 base packages.

Study Guide Commentaries
Typically, study guide commentaries will provide short introductions to each passage, and ask several questions of the reader.
type:bible-commentary AND (series:("Bryan Williams Bible Study Collection", "Not Your Average Bible Study"), mytag:commentary-study-guide)
For this group I have extended the rule (red text) to pick up the Irving Jensen Inductive Bible Studies which are or type:bible-notes.
type:bible-commentary AND (series:("Bryan Williams Bible Study Collection", "Not Your Average Bible Study"), mytag:commentary--study-guide) OR (author:"Jensen, Irving") AND type:bible-notes)
There is probably a better way to extend the rule but its effective in picking up these titles which, for me at least I think are worth adding to this grouping rather than creating another one for inductive studies alone at this point in time since the number of title in this combined grouping is reasonably small.
type:bible-commentary AND (series:("Bryan Williams Bible Study Collection", "Not Your Average Bible Study"), mytag:commentary--study-guide) OR (author:"Jensen, Irving") AND type:bible-notes)
author: has one parenthesis too many. Try:-

The syntax below is for those using Logos prior to version 7.15 or want a mobile-compatible version. It works fine, but can be slow and I won't be adding new commentaries to this syntax. For the most up-to-date version, see the first post in this thread.
Background Commentaries
Background Commentaries don’t commentate on the overall meaning of a passage, but provide insights from the historical and cultural background wherever that’s appropriate.
type:bible-commentary (series:("IVP Bible Background Commentary", "Lexham Geographic Commentary", "Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary"), title:("Has God Not Chosen the Poor?", "Manners and Customs of the Bible", "Background Commentary", "The Political Paul"), mytag:commentary-background)
Expository Commentaries
Typically, expository commentaries will discuss the meaning of the Bible text at a fairly simple level. They’ll be simple to read, with plenty of application and illustrations — a bit like a printed sermon. They’ll be hardly any footnotes, and hardly any Greek and Hebrew (which would be transliterated, if used at all).

Intermediate Commentaries
Typically, intermediate commentaries will discuss the meaning of the Bible text, in a serious but not overly-academic way. If they discuss Greek and Hebrew words, those words will be transliterated, and there will be little grammatical analysis. They may acknowledge different interpretations of a passage, but probably only in footnotes. There may be some application for the contemporary church, but that won’t be a main emphasis.

Technical Commentaries

Historical Commentaries (Antiquity)
Commentaries written prior to the medieval period (i.e. up to the fifth century).

Historical Commentaries (Reformation)
Commentaries written in the period of the Reformation period (i.e. from the sixteenth to the early eighteenth century). Commentaries from both Protestant and Catholic writers are included.

This collection tries to use publication dates to increase the number of volumes, but in so doing catches a few earlier commentaries that were republished in this period. You can either remove the dates from the filter, or add the other historical collections into the "minus these resources" section.

Bug report:
"The New International Greek Testament Commentary: Expanded Paraphrase of 2 Corinthians" should be in "Commentaries (Technical)".
By the way, are there any better way for the community to contribute to a public document? It will be nice if I can edit it and submit a "merge request" rather than relying the original author to do it manually.
Also, it is quite common to have 2 volume commentaries, 1 for OT, 1 for NT.
Literally they aren't "One Volume Commentaries", but in practice there aren't too much difference between them (i.e. they made an effort to reduce things to 1 vol., just per testament or per bible.)
Would you consider regarding them as "Commentaries (One Volume)", or perhaps add a new "Commentaries (Two Volumes)"?

Sorry, I should have said it all in one go.
I looked at the rule to create "Commentaries (One Volume)", there's no extension that can make it include "One volume per testament kind of commentaries". Either it has to be manually added as a collection, or Logos/Faithlife add new metadata to it.
I've updated the collections to add:
If you want the latest versions, you can manually update them using the syntax in the first post, or if you've previously downloaded them from https://documents.logos.com/ head back there to get the latest version.

Is there a reason for including "The Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges" in 'Intermediate' rather than 'Historical: 1750-1950'? According to the series PDP, the publication date range is from 1882-1922.
I've made two changes to the collections:
I'm still not clear whether it's possible to update to the latest version from within Logos, or whether you need to head to https://documents.logos.com/. Perhaps someone could clarify that, and let us know the steps required.

I had already added:
Ah, you added a different series that's name starts with rather than is in its entirety. https://www.logos.com/product/9330/the-peoples-bible-complete-set is the set I was referring to.
The above collection is still not picked up.
I started with "type:"Bible commentary" and subtracted out all your collections which left me with 98 books unaccounted for. The series that seem to me ought to be caught as series are:
One-volume commentaries not picked up include:
The remaining 26 items require a bit more research on my part.
Thanks for your work on this.
Just an FYI for those using your collections, I find it useful to have a Jewish commentary collection and a Lectionary-based commentary collection ... I'm sure the latter is no surprise.
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."
Oh, I see where that improvement comes from. Thanks!
I think as long as you update your collection, then in the web update it by clicking the link symbol, then the one who added your resource should automatically see the change.
i think having a testing account is also useful especially the web app can already does a lot of thing so there’s not much overhead to setting one up.
I've added over 200 hundred individual volumes to the shared collections, so the shared collections now include ALL the commentaries I'm aware of, not just those in a series.
Mark, did you note my post just below this post of yours?

That means all the commentaries from the new Messianic Jewish base packages are now included.

Hi Mark,
I've finally got round to upgrading to use your collection documents. Thanks for your work on those.
I have come across several commentaries that don't seem to fit in any of yours. Could you consider these when you are next updating your lists?
Thanks again.

Could a collection be created for Messianic Jewish Commentaries And Resources? It’d be nice to run a passage guide with those results only.

When I update these collections in the future, Logos 8 users will see a notification in their docs menu which will allow you to easily update the collection to the new rules.
Mark,
I wanted to switch to the auto-update approach. To do this, I deleted all the previous collection rules from you which I had copied manually. Then I followed the instructions of your first posting. However, all the collection rules ended up with a (2) at the end, e.g., Commentaries (Expository) (2). I then manually renamed this collection to Commentaries (Expository). Does this mean that the auto-update does not work any longer?

Mark,
Do you know if auto-update works if a collection has been renamed?

I don't know for certain, but I suspect it will still work as each collection has a UniqueID that persists after a rename.

I’m not very savvy when it cones to this stuff, but didn’t FL say to update the collection manually since they were rebranding the Lexham Guides? Wouldn’t the same apply to other series/collections? Maybe I’m way off, but I thought of bringing it up anyway 👍😁👌

For me, the collections appear to update, but the webpage tells me that they are out-of-date.

Thanks, Mark. Let's see what happens when you update the collections next time.
The unique ID has pros and cons. It is great if I just want to maintain the downloaded collection (which is what I want to do with Mark's collections). But I assume there are some people who download a collection and assume that they can make it their own by renaming it. So if they modify the collection, their changes might be reversed with the next update of the original collection.
