Make commentaries more useful to the average pew warmer

One issue in creating teaching materials or selecting appropriate commentaries to recommend is vocabulary. For example, my recent tip using deixis and deictic marker which are markers I would not expect the average high school graduate to know … but one needs the technical vocabulary even when using a smart search.

Please create an exegetical/hermeneutical dictionary based on the vocabulary of the commentaries and Bible study monographs that provides definitions for the terms used that are outside the average high school graduates' vocabulary - either a standalone book or embedded in the Factbook. Ideally, a word web presentation would help in finding and learning the included words. Allow us to use the resource in conjunction with the Concordance tool to identify the words in a commentary that we might need to explain. And, as an extra bonus, allow us to build word study decks to feed in Anki.

great idea! upvoted.

I have a grade 6 education, and so I am not the best with tough words, and how the English language works. I know what a noun is but that's about it. I couldn't tell you what a verb or adjustive is without first googling it, and my spelling has only improved so drastically because I literally have to remember how words are spelled, and doing so using the computer so much typing has actually been a huge blessing for me. I don't feel the need to go back to school because I rather focus on bible study then secular, and I have all the tools at my fingertips to teach me on the go things that I need particular to whatever it is I am studying. That being said, I highly recommend prioritizing an English dictionary for this very reason. I use them all the time trying to figure out words I don't know.

I think having what you explained in your post is a GREAT idea! Someone like myself would highly benefit from this!

My Grandma (born 1885) had to drop out of school at the end of the 4th grade to help an older sister. But she read extensively and valued education. It was not until as an adult I received a letter from her, I really didn't understand how little formal education she had. But it taught me to be aware that a lack of formal education is not always apparent. You must always teach as if there are some who don't know the vocabulary.

Yeah, I could just imagine how the letter read! I read a lot as well actually, it was my reading in jail all the many books I did read, (before I was saved) that I was able to learn how to spell and also read better while in there, I would read out loud. My punctuation could use some improvement. Sometimes I am not sure if I should use a comma or not, lol.

None the less, I am thankful logos has a few English dictionaries to use when needed.

Addition to iOS app
In the iOS app there is a “back button” that will take you to the previous passage that you were at. It would be nice to also have a “forward” button so that you could go back to where you were before you hit the back button.
