Odd highlighting

On occasion I will see some odd highlighting, and on digging around I will figure out how to get rid of it. This one has me stumped. This journal article - Douglas J. Moo, “ ‘Law’, ‘Works of the Law’ and Legalism in Paul,” WTJ 45 (1983): 73–100 - has every instance of the word "the" highlighted, from the title to the end of part II of the article, but not in part III of the article. The article before doesn't have this except its introduction, which does, the two following articles have this throughout, and the article after that does not. It's as though somebody else has done this - but my settings for community tags and ratings are off (not that either of those seems relevant), and I don't see any other "community" settings in the tab for this journal issue or in settings. "Find in this panel" is blank, and "Search" is blank, each for this tab.

Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks!

In my experience, unexpected highlights are often the result of visual filters. Do the highlights remain with all visual filters turned off?

Also Emphasize is off, and although page numbers are shown here, these persist when Markers is off.

As I understand it, visual filters are now in the "Emphasize" toolbar item, and the switch for that is off. Is there somewhere else some visual filters have migrated in the toolbar reorganization of v37? Thanks!

Sorry, using the term "visual filters" is probably not helpful with the dynamic toolbar, as this area has changed significantly from the old toolbar. This page addresses those changes in detail. If you have "show visual emphasis" turned off under "Emphasize" that should suffice I would think.

Right, but that page shows the old three-dot menu. "Emphasize" is all I can find in the reworked toolbar as well, but even though it's off, this odd highlighting persists. If anybody knows of anywhere else some of what was visual filters might have migrated, please share!

If you review that page more thoroughly, you will notice a detailed breakdown of how visual filters has been integrated into the new toolbar. Perhaps try turning off notes and highlights from other books with corresponding text.

Thanks. In the journal issue where this is happening, "Show notes and highlights" just has this note, with no slide switch or checkable items: "You haven’t made any notes or highlights in this book yet."

It's a mystery….

Sorry, I probably should have thought of this first, but visual filters still exists on the dynamic toolbar, albeit in a more narrowed sense. Try turning off "Show Visual Filters" under Formatting.

Thanks, MJ. I've looked everywhere I might have a search open that I can think of, other than other resources. But it was something "open," because the Logos equivalent of rebooting - which is to close the app without updating the layout, and then restart the app and reopen the layout - made the odd highlights go away. So problem solved, in a way that did not identify the exact source! But a search of some sort seems likely to be the culprit, although I don't recall searching "the".

Thanks, Aaron. Under "Formatting," I checked every submenu item, but I don't have the icon that brings up visual filters in the illustration. But, as I noted to MJ, I found an inelegant solution - restarting without updating the layout. Now I will never know, but I will stay alert to what I do in case this happens again.

The dynamic toolbar will hide buttons for which no current options exist. If you open a Bible, you will likely see the visual filters toggle.

It sounds like MJ was right on the money. Searches can be tricky, because even if you delete the search, the search remains active until you hit enter with an empty search or click the small x to the right.
