Say What? Libronix no longer supported????
Well we knew it had to happen. Libronix 3 must eventually fade away as the whispers of Logos 5 get louder. I am talking about the new de-velopment in the downloading of Libronix files from the Logos website.
There are some files that just do not run under Libronix 3, files like Biblical People, Places, and Things, along with the Perseus Collections. But most of the resources sold will work with both L3 and L4 versions. When we purchased downloadable resources our invoice contained an option to download the files to a "previous version" installation. That option is now GONE. Not only is it missing from the new invoices, it has been purged from all our previous invoices.
THIS IS NOT GOOD.
If you think, "Fine, I will just use the "Librinox downloadable files" at the bottom of my order page.", Think again. Logos has not given us any Libronix file links for resources that have shipped the last couple of days. In other words, The Expositors Bible can not be installed to Libronix.
Please, Logos, tell me you are just caught in a server switch and will have support for Libronix restored soon. I would hate to think we will lose Libronix before Logos 4 has reached maturity.

- The "Download Instructions for Previous Versions" is once again available on the Order Summary page. There, you'll find the button that unlocks and downloads the files, just as before. Note, however, that this section appears for all products, including new products that don't work in L3. (This is why we removed it site-wide.) In the future, it will only appear for relevant products.
- We have posted a list of resources that still work in Libronix.

yep.

So please tell us Todd. How do I get my latest Pre-Pubs into Libronix?
btw: I did not make up the news flash. It came from the mouth of a Logos employee. Maybe that employee got it wrong but they said "Nothing shipping from 2012 on will run under Libronix. "
I am sending Bob Pritchett an email with this thread linked. Hope he tells us it ain't so!

Download the files from ftp.logos.com to your Libronix resources directory, and synchronize your licenses in Libronix. The files will be named the same as the Logos4 ones, except they will have the .lbxlls extension instead of the .logos4 extension. You can find the Logos4 filenames by going to the support information portion of the info pane in the resource window.
Edit: here are links (EDIT2: forum software doesn't like "ftp" links had to remove the "link"):

I'm sorry our announcement is late; we are planning to drop support for Libronix edition of new releases. It's been over 2 years since we moved to Logos 4, and most of our users have moved to it.
As we add more functionality and support for richer tagging to Logos 4, it's harder and more time-consuming to build Libronix-compatible editions. And while there are still Libronix users, they typically aren't frequent/active purchasers of new content. (They are increasingly, by definition, people who don't upgrade/buy a lot of new things.)
We believe the time is right to drop Libronix support on new releases so that we can put our resources into other efforts.
I know many people do still use Libronix, and we're not disabling it, we're just not going to keep putting more and more effort into supporting it with new releases. I apologize for the disconnect between the change in releases and the announcement; if you need to return a resource we'll be happy to help you with that.

I was just thinking about uninstalling Libronix from my computer as I can't remember the last time I opened it. I am really happy with all the improvements we have seen over the last two years and as soon as we get notes and highlighting on ios I will be ecstatic! I know some people will complain but I just wanted to say thanks Bob, I'm sure the reallocated labor will pay off in an even better L4 experience.
Okie dokie, Bob. Let's try to clarify (since the details don't match the above).
1. Are people able to download 'any' L3 resources they've purchased in 2012? The above indicates you're still sending emails with licenses.
2. Are we safe in concluding the credits we were promised in 2011 are now not supportable in Libronix3? Note that the 1 month delay was not mentioned in your Christmas sale verbage (though the delay is understandable).
I ask #2 (along with #1) since I had assumed that indeed you'd stop shipping L3 resources (so I purchased AYB). But if you're not also going let me download the credits in L3 format (you not having even mentioned your delay during the sale), then yes, we'll need to undo about $2,100 worth of purchases and finish up our relationship.
"If myth is ideology in narrative form, then scholarship is myth with footnotes." B. Lincolm 1999.
But if you're not also going let me download the credits in L3 format
Here's the thing, I still have over 200 resources in Libronix format in Logos4; many of which you can still buy. Logos aren't going to know whether you intend it for Libronix or Logos 4 or both. Same applies to any resource you buy unless its availability is clarified i.e. "Works on".
It's clear that new releases in 2012 won't be "shipped" in Libronix format. So is there is a conflict between Logos' promise of credit and your expectation to use that credit for products in Libronix or is it the lack of a download link in Orders? Note that I think Logos' timing and lack of clarity is abysmal.

It's clear that new releases in 2012 won't be "shipped" in Libronix format
What is clear is Logos has to cut the throat of it's sibling Libronix before Logos can claim the throne. All resources downloading from Logos.com will be Logos 4 only, but all resources shipped from third party publishers will be Libronix format. As long as Logos is still creating the CDs in-house for third party publishers there is going to be a sibling rivalry.
edit: I have just learned this resource will only be produced as a downloadable product. The Libronix CD has been canceled. (Publisher said so.)
The latest third party production I am interested in is the Church of God Digital Library Collection 9 . As best as I can tell it is a downloadable product for Logos 4 (no shipping) see edit note aboveand a CD product for Libronix (marketed by the creator. The future of the Logos user base looks eerily like the divided kingdom stage of Israel & Judah. Will Logos continue to produce Libronix resources for it's closest competitor? What if IVP, CoG, Fortress Press, eNelson and the others don't want to contract for Logos in-house publishing? Scary. Abysmal fits

Well, to be honest, I'm not upset or anything. When L4 came out and we came to understand Bob's vision, we budgeted for a year of L3 resources, figuring he'd close L3 up after a year. When 2011 rolled around, I was dancing around with my spouse on why I was still significantly purchasing throughout 2011.
My only issue is wanting to use my Christmas credit to finish out our 2011 budget (all are pre-existing resources, most of them actually existing back in the heyday of L3).
I'd also would have really liked Meyer in L3 format but I guess I can write it off. Earlier this week, I deleted all my CPs and all nice-to-have pre-pubs. Presuming 2012 resources are L4 only, I'll delete the rest as well.
Again, I've no issue with Bob ... he's a year later than I planned. I'm just waiting to see how we'll close out the 2011 sale.

So much for multi-platform usage of resources.
All under-powered laptops and netbooks need not apply. The same goes for older computers; or for those that do not have good internet connections. If the resource is not available in Biblia or ipad you are out of luck. If you consider hardware requirements for full Logos 4 application; the entry level just got more expensive. It seems that if a resource can be made available to an internet browser it surely could be made available in some form for Libronix, which is browser based, even if all the "advanced functionality and richer tagging" may be crippled. This was my initial criticism of Logos 4 and it still stands. I wonder about the remote missionary or the budget minded user that has hardware related issues. (I just recently upgraded to a new quad-core i7 computer but still run Libronix as well as Logos4 because of some features I don't want to get into now.)
I know many people do still use Libronix, and we're not disabling it, we're just not going to keep putting more and more effort into supporting it with new releases.

Bob,
Like some of the other posters here, I too am upset about this drastic change of support with no notice period!
With L3, we could download the install media, the resource files, and our license keys. This permitted a reinstal in the event thatLogos was offline for a time, or forever! Until this last week or so, this protection of our expensive purchases was in place.
Please advise how I can protect my investment with your company now the L3 support is being disabled? How can I ensure my spend on licenses how any hope of outlasting the Logos Company, in the event of some future problems?
We need a full offline install and license-key load please.
This is a CRITICAL matter and may well impact my spending with your company.

Not suggesting for a moment that Logos shouldn't respond to this but just wondered whether Option 1 at http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers would provide some of the capability you are looking for in an L4 context?

I stand corrected. My order page has many section and I haven't looked at the very bottom. I was wrong.
Here is what I saw at first:
when I clicked on the links, I got to the Order Summary which I believed once had a link to libronix autoinstall file (licence and resources).
anyway, when I scrolled to the bottom of my Orders page I saw this:
so, the resource links are still there, but the licence file isn't. It can be had by going Tools>Library Management>Restore Licences

Personally wish for return on Orders page for ability to click on order number, then download update.lbxupd file, which could be run to download many resources in one session (vis clicking on every single resource file on my orders page, which can be quite tedious for bundle and collection purchases).
Adding update.lbxupd files in "Libronix Downloadable Files" section on orders page would be appreciated, knowing that section is essentially becoming static (no new updates).
Keep Smiling [:)]

It's a clean break from Logos' point of view. There is no legacy stuff in Order Summary to confuse people, and Bob has made it clear that additional effort will not be expended in this area.
In any case Users should backup their Libronix resources to a removable drive because their Order page never contained an inventory of every resource they own and neither does the FTP site. This is not new, as Libronix never had a procedure/script to restore missing resources. Although an installation DVD provides an automated way to copy resources to the computer it does not contain every resource on the FTP site.
So backup your resources and your license file!
EDIT: "your" is directed at users, not one individual!

Thats a very big call by Bob, with zero notice, if that's in fact the position.
I call on Bob to urgently reinstate the missing L3 file download links on my Orders page, and give some notice period. Even as small as 30 to 90 days or so, but zero is unacceptable in my view.
The team is looking into whether or not they can make this happen easily enough...
I don't know how easy it was, but they've been brought back:)
I don't really care for continued support of L3, L4 made a lot of the things i missed in L3 possible. I still didn't like the way Logos handled this issue... (I know you've said you're sorry Bob, so I do believe there won't be a next time:)
I do use L3 as a sort of backup though and I do hope Logos will make it possible to backup L4 in a satisfactory way. (I.e. opening for off-line installation...)
Well, last night I bought the Brenton LXX, since OL never had it. Apparently they've been forced into honesty again, so the update with the apocrypha will likely be L4 only.
Anyway, of course the order had no L3 links. And the download script was missing from the email.
I used the above discussed order list to bring it down and then sync'd it to get the licenses.
On the weekend I didn't really know what the issue was.
I thought it was NEW 2012 reources not being supported, with Bob apologizing for not happening to mention it to his 500,000 claimed customers (actually accounts).
But now observing the process, this WAS an sloppy attempt to stop access to older resources.
I continue to believe Logos really has a hard time with honesty. I thought it was basically Bob and Dan; certainly not their father. But then Bob trashed his staff for wanting to prevent access, so who knows. I was so angry last night since L3 was the cheap solution for many (L4 runs fine for me).
As soon as I get my credits (again Logos not being up front), I'll be happy to 'move on' (as recommended by our forum participants!).

I should probably ignore this... but I can't.
Honesty is the first item on the Logos list of values. It really bothers me if you think that I an not exhibiting that value, because it means that our communication problem is worse than I think, or that I have some huge blind spot in my life.
I'm also bothered that you think Dan has a problem with it, since he rarely communicates publicly. What is he saying that's giving you this impression?
Can you please point to any instance in which Dan or I have not been honest with you or our customers? To any knowingly dishonest statement? To any intentionally deceptive omission?
We try to be completely transparent. When we make mistakes, or frustrate our users, I explain in what seems to me to be excessive detail how and why things happened. Sure, we don't reveal some things -- like shipping dates of new features -- but that's not dishonest; we tell you why we aren't telling you!
The Internet makes everything transparent; if not immediately, than eventually. What's the business case for dishonesty? How does it ever profit anyone who plans to be in business for more than a year? (And we do.)
In what way did I trash my staff? I explained (honestly) exactly what happened, and took responsibility for not coordinating the process. The staff did their jobs as they understood them.
It seems like you're "so angry...since L3 was the cheap solution for many." But even here I (and the company) have been honest and forthright: we don't develop software for older machines. We never have, since day one when we shipped Windows software in 1991 while MS-DOS still led the market. We develop for current and future machines. (See http://community.logos.com/forums/p/8620/74226.aspx#74226 for one of several detailed posts on this subject; this one is from Jan 2010.)
I'm assuming you don't really think we're "dishonest", you are just upset that L3 support is being phased out and feel like that was some sort of "planned surprise" to abandon people. "A sloppy attempt to stop access to older resources." But I've explained how we haven't stopped access at all -- simply stopped making new resources in an old format -- and even if this was "a plan", in what way is it dishonest? When v4 of a product ships, is it any surprise that the company is no longer working on/worrying about/investing in v3? Do you think people are sitting around automobile factories worrying about new feature for the 2009 car models?
How exactly have we been dishonest? (And how has Dale -- our father -- earned your approbation? Are his once-a-year posts more complete and error free disclosure, or is the secret of an honest reputation simply engaging in less public communication?) I really do want to know, because, even though I am upset at the accusation, if there's truth to it I will listen and attempt to humbly remedy the deficiency.
-- Bob
Bob ... you requested an answer.
First, I'll confirm I don't really think you're dishonest. I'll also confirm I love your Libronix product, and I also am often amazed by your Logos4 product. I don't know who does your web coding, but I am also very impressed. None of these represent my concern.
I'll also point out, as I have in several previous threads, that I fully expected for you to end support for Libronix, and was very thankful (and still am) that you provided support. The way I was able to spend about $10,000 on your product, was assuring my spouse you would eventually end Libronix support. So, I'd be the dishonest one, if ceasing support were MY issue since I obviously prepared for it.
Now for my use of the phrase 'hard time with honesty' and elsewhere 'challenged with honesty'. For that, let me use three examples; maybe our definitions are different (as they are in our society).
(1) My favorite presidential candidate currently was accused of some verbage from two decades ago that was quite offensive. He demurred that he didn't write it. But during the same period, he had bragged concerning the people who love that sort of thing, and contributed large sums to his campaigns. He was probably indeed honest about it. But today I have trouble with putting the two events together, and so my concern with his honesty.
(2) A recent president was caught with his proverbial pants down. Against significant accusations, he faced the camera head-on and said he didn't do it. When I heard him deny it, I knew immediately he was technically being honest. The denomination I grew up in was the same that he grew up in, and the words he used meant very specific things. But he very likely knew that.
(3) I heard a story recently from whense, I've forgotten. A rancher south of us had pecan trees and some small boys stopped by and began picking up pecans. The rancher responded by wheeling the boys' bicycles up to his house and waiting. Soon enough, the boys arrived, asking for their bicycles back. The pecans were really not the issue; it was simply asking instead of taking (honesty).
"I'm also bothered that you think Dan has a problem with it, since he rarely communicates publicly. What is he saying that's giving you this impression?" 'Dan' does 99% of the talking for Logos (marketing). I'd hope not to have to re-hash the continuing saga of over-stated advertising claims, in-program advertisements (so called 'alerts'), and quietly sharing data with 3rd parties. I think some of this has slowed down, if I'm not mistaken. But you don't have to peruse too much of the forum, before you run into lengthy discomfort.
"We try to be completely transparent." There, I'd have to respectfully disagree. At each step of the way, users have to guess where you're going and what you're doing. Should we talk about 'notes'? In your Libronix product the support was quite extensive, but when you rolled out Logos4, a considerable amount of functionality was missing. You said 'well, gee, I can't keep every feature.' True. But what happened to their previous notes? Ditto on PPB, and even more so; they literally paid for the rights to use it. Today, you brag concerning PB, being free etc. but will you then trash today's PB plus notes in your version 5? It's actually quite likely.
"The Internet makes everything transparent; if not immediately, than eventually. What's the business case for dishonesty?" Again, I respectfully disagree. With both Libronix, and Logos4 you've developed a reputation for being over-priced and slow. What's that have to do with the challenge of honesty? Plenty. A customer moving from your Libronix to your Logos4 suddenly finds their Bible study impacted. You say 'Well, please continue to use Libronix.' Oh really? If I remember right, that lasted all of one year before the MS patch requirement, etc and one year later 'sorry'. In my case, I knew you'd do that and prepared.
"In what way did I trash my staff? I explained (honestly) exactly what happened, and took responsibility for not coordinating the process. The staff did their jobs as they understood them." Here, I'm speaking from an executive perspective. You shouldn't even mention your staff's involvement for obvious reasons. Then you said only 2012 resources had been impacted. But when I later bought a Libronix-era book, the invoice had been reprogrammed to prevent me from downloading it (Libronix), AND the email pointed back to the reprogrammed invoice. I wondered why the 'staff' would do that; it was a lot of work. Per you, it was 'the staff' that wanted to end Libronix support (2012 books) but the actual programming ended even pre-2012 support. Like the examples above, something doesn't wash.
Some examples of the challenge of honesty:
- What was your basis for removing Bible note-taking and PBB support? Was it honest, that while you were literally selling PBB support, you were planning its demise? That your customers would have to dump their work?
- When your customers could easily use your previous software, stand-alone in far off places, and you programmed so they could not in the future do so (while you continued selling them resources), were you honest?
- Where people had private notes etc that belonged to them, were you honest when you programmed the new software to take what was theirs without permission, and shrug it off?
- Where many Christians are very uncomfortable mixing commercial enterprise with Bible study, were you honest with them in dumping your 'alerts' but actually advertisements in their faces?
- You literally require your customers to go to the forum for key support, while countenancing extreme examples of religious meanness, is that honest?
I've no doubt each of these are arguable for everyone, and you too probably have very good reasons. 'Transparent' indeed. That's why I said then and continue to say that you and your brother do have a challenge with the concept. My reference to your father was that at least down here, kids impact on their parents.
"If myth is ideology in narrative form, then scholarship is myth with footnotes." B. Lincolm 1999.
Now for my use of the phrase 'hard time with honesty' and elsewhere 'challenged with honesty'. For that, let me use three examples; maybe our definitions are different (as they are in our society).
Denise, I think we've got a vocabulary problem: I don't think these examples fit the dictionary's definition of "honesty" problems. And since a lot of people consider it an important word, I think it's irresponsible of you to re-purpose it to "I don't like the way you changed the feature set in the new version." Your use, out of context of the (not dishonest) examples you present, borders on slander.
'Dan' does 99% of the talking for Logos (marketing).
You're out of date. Dan does close to zero of the talking for Logos marketing. The blog, the NewsWire, the alerts, the emails are (to the best of my knowledge) almost 100% written by the marketing team, which now reports to Phil, who reports to Dan (who is in a separate building).
So is Dan off the hook and restored (by virtue of his silence, at least) to an honest reputation?
(I'm not trying to throw the marketing team under the bus, either. I don't think they're being dishonest, but they are a large team and very few of them even worked here when we last sold Libronix (pre Nov 2009), so they don't always have context, knowledge of what some users perceive to be commitments made long ago, or even how everything works. I'd call this a communication challenge, not the moral shortcoming of "an honesty problem.")
"We try to be completely transparent." There, I'd have to respectfully disagree. At each step of the way, users have to guess where you're going and what you're doing. Should we talk about 'notes'? So when a new product doesn't have the features of an older version, that's "dishonest?" I feel like I've already addressed this enough...
you've developed a reputation for being over-priced and slow. What's that have to do with the challenge of honesty? Plenty. Huh? We write Logos 4 on Microsoft's announced new tech platform for Windows, which runs slower on existing machines, and that's an honesty challenge? And as for continuing to use Libronix / MS patch issue, etc. -- are you referring to how an update of Internet Explorer, released after we released Logos 4, impacted Libronix? If you remember, we went back and fixed that for our old Libronix product after we'd already released Logos 4! Isn't that the amazing support for a retired product that was broken by Microsoft at no fault of ours? And "one year later"? What are you referring to? It still works! We haven't disabled it, we've just stopped new book releases! (I'm getting a feeling of deja vu... have I said that before? :-) )

Again, huh? How does this not wash? We stopped releasing everything for two platforms. We had one email template that was used to send a "what to do" email after you bought a book. It had two platform instructions. Since the two platform instructions wouldn't be relevant for the new titles, the single template (used for every product) was changed to just reflect the instructions for our current, shipping (two year old!) platform. How does this not wash? It seems incredibly obvious. And it wasn't a lot of work, it was the easiest thing that could possibly work. What would be "hard" would be writing, testing and deploying new code that checked each invoice to see if any line item was for a pre-2012 release, then including download instructions for two platforms for some line items, and for one platform for others.
What was your basis for removing Bible note-taking and PBB support? Was it honest, that while you were literally selling PBB support, you were planning its demise? That your customers would have to dump their work?
What do you mean by removing Bible note-taking? Has the product ever not supported notes on a Bible? Or are you referring to something I don't understand. And about selling PBB while planning its demise -- do you mean pre-Nov 2009 when we sold Libronix, but knew we wouldn't read HTML PBB books in Logos 4? We didn't even know then -- we just guessed! We shipped Logos 4 without having started implementing a Loos 4 version of PBB; all we knew was that people hated our dependency on Internet Explorer, and we said up front we were removing that. We didn't even know then if we'd be able to import those old PBB's or not. Again, this insistence that every feature exist in every new version (in exactly the same way!) seems ridiculous.
When your customers could easily use your previous software, stand-alone in far off places, and you programmed so they could not in the future do so (while you continued selling them resources), were you honest?
Again -- this is an honesty issue? That we wrote an application in 2009 that shared things via the Internet (so we could support things like iPhones, only invented shortly before)? Because our having sold an application (first in 1991!) that ran without the Internet (which no one had in 1991!) we had somehow made a promise to never require the Internet? (Which we still don't!)
Have you ever sent an email to someone you'd previously written a paper letter to? Maybe years before? If you did, would that be a dishonest change in your relationship? You'd previously been willing to engage them in a personal way, in a preservable, scrapbook-able form that reflected personal effort and physical involvement. And now you coldly type out emails that fade into the ether when the power is off, and which can't be held and read by firelight in a cabin with no power...
I'm just going to stop. This is ridiculous.
Transparency, indeed.... We have 250 employees selling 20,000 different books on multiple software platforms on multiple hardware platforms. There is no way on earth that 250 people can know everything each other is doing or planning, and no way that we can answer every question accurately. Moreover, many of the questions we answer each day are about our plans and intentions and technical predictions. And we often don't know ourselves! Technology changes constantly. Our users change constantly. Our plans change constantly! When we shipped Logos 4 the iPad hadn't been announced! Android didn't matter. There was no Kindle Fire. Microsoft was still advocating WPF.
We're not the Soviet Central Committee with a "50 Year Plan to Lead the World in Concrete Production." We don't know the future, and our plans aren't immutable.
We answer every question as best we can when we're asked. It is 100% the truth as we know it when we answer it. I'm sorry that things change, features are dropped, things reprioritized, etc. But that's technology and business. The world moves on.
It's okay if you don't move at the same pace. I don't mind if you don't have the same speed setting for new stuff or the same tolerance for leaving the past behind. But I wish we could separate "I don't like the changes" from "you're morally deficient."
Do you attend a church with 250 people? Could all of them state the church's position on the canonicity of the pericope adulterae? Or some other theological point? Could all of them correctly answer the question, "Was the youth group meeting canceled this week?" I'll bet not. And I'll bet some would think they knew the right answer and tell you the wrong one.
Do you attend a church of dishonest liars?
It's clear some people will never forgive me for Logos 4. I am amazed, amused, and even a bit flattered that so many people really prefer Libronix. We designed it in 1998. My son was in kindergarten; he's applying to college now! I've moved on. I'm sorry if I dragged your favorite Bible software tool forward before you were ready, and I'm sorry that my idea of what was and wasn't needed in the future didn't match yours.
I feel good about Logos 4 overall, though, because the aggregate evidence supports us: sales literally doubled in a single year after we released Logos 4. Positive feedback went up. Customer complaints and service calls per user dropped by around a third. The "most hated" features of Libronix-lovers (cloud syncing, notes being copied to the server, etc.) are, in the aggregate, the specific features that have earned the most positive feedback.
So I'm done feeling bad about it. It still runs. We supported it even after we replaced it. We built new books for it for two years. And I'm still here in the forums being "put on trial" for not preserving the past in amber.
but will you then trash today's PB plus notes in your version 5? It's actually quite likely.
Logos 5, unlike Logos 4, is not a complete re-design. We don't have plans to change anything I would consider fundamental. But I can guarantee we'll change some things, and now I'm pretty sure that some of you will hate it.
As if this isn't long enough ... I'll preempt next year's accusations of dishonesty by telling you exactly what might happen and why:
I designed the handouts feature. I like it. It's not on the Mac, and we've said that it's not immediately planned there because it would require a fundamental re-write, since the Windows implementation uses a WPF-specific feature.
At the moment, it's planned for the Mac. The new technology we need for laying out handouts is being coded now, for both platforms. We're doing it for something else. We don't know how fast it'll perform, or if it'll meet all handouts needs, but it's in the right direction.
Right now, handouts lacks the support of some people in the company. They think it's a complicated feature that didn't get any traction. Only a few people use it, and they have complaints. Fixing the things they don't like will be hard and expensive. The new technology will still needs lots of work to re-implement handouts on top of it.
People are carrying smart-phones and tablets. More and more every year. By the time Logos 5 is done it might be more reasonable to have a pastor email a list of links to Biblia.com than to print a paper handout to give out physically.
Even if not, as we approach shipping Logos 5, we may run low on time. We may want to get the other data and features out and not have handouts done on Mac. We may not want to take the heat of Mac users complaining of no feature parity.
Handouts might get cut late in the process. Or might not.
Dishonest to put that feature in 4, announce plans to have it on the Mac, and then not get there? By your definition, apparently so. But not by mine. Because Handouts might be there -- better than ever. At this point I don't even know. And when I do know it'll probably be a single case in a three hour triage meeting where dozens of features are ruled in or out based on tech, schedule, unforseen issues, etc.
That's how it works. And that's why I'm here, answering questions, telling you the current status, and, I believe, being transparent. But still, I'll never be able to meet all your needs, or tell you everything, because some of you will never forgive handouts coming out of the product, no matter how good the reason, and we can't remember o physically manage to tell you every decision as it's made -- that meeting will be one of four being held simultaneously, all with some decision some user would have liked to have known at that moment...
We write Logos 4 on Microsoft's announced new tech platform for Windows, which runs slower on existing machines
Wow, I wish L4 was built on a platform that worked on my PC like L3 does! Not trying to be facetious, but wouldn't it be a better idea to build for the majority of users instead of just those with cutting edge machines?

It benefits Logos users for Logos to stay ahead of the technology, rather than behind it. If Logos released a version of L4 built on technology that everyone had when it was still in development, their product would be underpowered on the first day of its release (to say nothing or a year or two down the road). It is now two years past L4's release date and most users now have machines that can handle L4.
Even if Logos did design L4 to run on old machines, how far back should they go? Why not Apple 2 or Commodore 64?
Whoa! Let's all just calm down for a moment... Please don't return all your software or burn down our buildings at least until the weekend is over, and we can get our team together in a room! :-)
First: I'm very sorry for the surprise of this. I take full responsibility. The text development department asked me a month or two ago (I don't even recall when!) if we could stop producing new Libronix-compatible files at the end of 2011, and after hearing all the reasons and expenses, I agreed.
I personally failed to think through all the implications, failed to map "end of this year" to "Christmas special season", and I didn't assign anyone to coordinate communications.
This is my failure, and I'm sorry.
So word did filter through the organization, and people did the things that made sense (like removing the links to the Libronix files in emails, web pages, etc.) but nobody put together a plan. Some things were unanticipated consequences: we are only ending development of new resources in Libronix format, not retiring or hiding existing ones, but the system that shows download information after a purchase is only technically able to show one set of instructions -- it wasn't coded to show different instructions for different books -- so someone went ahead and just stripped Libronix download information out of all the communications, because it wouldn't work for the new releases.
We should have handled the communication better, and provided advance notice. I apologize for this failure.
Some clarification:
- We haven't disabled or taken anything away. While I understand the emotional feeling you may have about this if you hate Logos 4 (or can't run it for some reason), this isn't some sort of theft or betrayal. We provided what you bought. You've been using it for years. It still works today. It even still works in the future, (which is more than you can say for lots of other software after a new version has been released). You have the files we sold you. (Libronix wasn't even sold with a cloud model, so we never promised cloud access to Libronix-format books. None the less, you still have it -- we haven't taken down the FTP site, and have no plans to.)
- We aren't "killing" support, we're just moving the web pages to an archive to avoid confusion for the vast majority of our users, who don't know what Libronix is and found those articles in the way. We're not training new customer service agents in Libronix, but we're not firing the existing team that does know it. We were answering questions about Logos v1.6 (from 1993) and the LLS (1995) till just recently.
- Our cloud-connected Logos 4 works offline, as we have well documented and described. This is much more secure and "back-up-able" than most cloud solutions, which are truly in the cloud and truly inaccessible if the server goes offline. Logos could go dark, and you can run what's on your system. You can use your own local tools to back up your books, your license file, your documents, etc. Back up your system, and run Logos in offline mode, and you're fine indefinitely.
- Your Libronix install, files, and keys need the server even less. So nothing we do -- up to and including going out of business or having our offices wiped out by a tsunami -- takes that away from you. Yes, you need to back up your files rather than counting on an easy download link from the archived orders page. But A) that's the way it was and is with older software -- nothing new, and we aren't taking down the FTP server. You can still get the files.
Time marches on, and technology does as well. I can understand the surprise, and agree we should have communicated the plan in advance. But I think the "I'm going to return everything I ever bought!" and "I've been betrayed!" sentiments are a bit harsh.
Do you expect all software to be supported as-is forever? That every new release will never take away or change anything from the previous? That all new products will be compatible with older products for all time?
Even if you love, love, love Windows XP, when Microsoft announces that some new product will require Vista or later, do you demand a refund of the purchase of your still functioning XP installation? When Apple switched operating systems, and then processors, did you demand a refund for everything you'd bought for OS 9 or Motorola or PowerPC processors?
Really -- is that fair? We haven't disabled what you bought from us. We don't even disable it if you upgrade to the (free) Logos 4 engine -- they run side-by-side! Which is more than you can say for an OS upgrade... The only thing that changed is that we aren't releasing new products for the old platform. (That we did for more than two years actually seems unusual to me.)
With that said, we don't want anyone to feel cheated. We haven't changed our returns policy. If you ordered a pre-pub that shipped in the last week Logos-4-only when you were expecting Libronix, of course we can refund that. If you have outstanding pre-pubs that haven't shipped, you may want to cancel them.
Again, I apologize for the poor communication. I will create a new post explaining our future plans to help prevent this from happening again around Logos 5 and beyond.
-- Bob
Two quick updates:
The "Download Instructions for Previous Versions" is once again available on the Order Summary page. There, you'll find the button that unlocks and downloads the files, just as before.
Thankyou Kent, Bob amd the rest of Logos!
These Install links for L3 was the main focus of my concern. Thankyou for their return.

Thanks
Two quick updates:
Kent,
1. How do people ordering a product for L3 get to this list e.g. from the Product Description page?
2. The list would be improved by sorting
As of December 31, 2011, resource files are only shipped in Logos 4
format. The following older resources are still available in Libronix
format.
1. This comment could be improved as it implies that L3 handles "older" product which clearly is not the case with NIV 2011.
2. "are only shipped" is ambiguous when you can get many in L3 format.
Try "As of December 31, 2011, new resource files are only available in Logos 4
format. The following resources are still available in Libronix
format and can be downloaded from the Order Summary page."

1. How do people ordering a product for L3 get to this list e.g. from the Product Description page?
We had an extensive discussion about how to communicate which products work in Libronix and which don't.
We chose not to link to this list from the product pages for a few reasons:
In the list's current location in the Libronix support pages, those who aren't looking for it won't see it, but those who want it will find it.

I'm only here since less than a year, and learned to expect a lot from Logos in terms of customer focus, service and willingness to go much wider than just a mile with us (uncomparable to other companies I happen to know) - but I didn't expect this from Bob, much less after all the flak.

'WOW' is right.
I think Bob listens to the whiners too much. This just cost him (Logos) a lot of money. Some of that will come back on the rest of us, as we foot the bill for the whiners.
I respect Bob and his decision. He's a better man than I am...that's not the group of folks to whom I would have catered.

I think you missed the point of the original timing upsetting people's plans to use purchase credits gained over Christmas period + orders for what then became L4 only resources. That was lost business (money) due to poor planning.
I respect Bob and his decision.
I respect Bob for admitting the mistake and giving 2 months notice.

I too respect and thank Bob for making this right!
There are many customers that purchased the 2010 books for $2010 and other large deals over the December period. Its right they can access the Version 3 files as there had been no early warning or notice prior to purchase. My buying was less than $2000 but still no small amount for me. I welcome being able to download and archive off the L3 install programs, my license file and the resource files.
I expect any so-called wasted money will be less than any harm done if this had not had such an outcome. Again, thank you Bob!
I still want offline install and backup for Logos 4, but thats a battle for another day. I have not yet given up! One day Bob will see what his competitors are doing with offline, Notes and other aspects. We do not all love the Cloud, or not having out own content somewhere we own. I see today one of the companies are announcing their PC version of their application.
'WOW' is right.
I think Bob listens to the whiners too much.
Hmm...are you, like...WHINING about those you consider whiners???
NO CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR YOU...you might just be perceived as a whiner.

Welcome to the Logos Forums .......... HOWEVER! Please note that you have posted to a very, very, very old thread which is likely to go no where! *smile*
I suggest you try again, choosing to post a new thread that's appropriate to what you want to communicate!

Thats odd... I have links for puchases I made just a couple days ago... when do you notice the last files for you?
ALL of my invoices I have checked are missing the option to "Download to previous versions." I checked invoices from 2010 and 2011 and none have the option now.
This just in: From 2012 on no resources shipping from Logos.com will run under Libronix
[:'(] what a bad day for Logos......................... I'm going to go put on the sackcloth. I'll let the rest of you do the wailing.
Logos 7 Collectors Edition
I hope Logos has an answer to the question about our licenses and rights were they ever to go out of business. I don't want to have spent thousands of dollars over the years to be locked out and have all my purchased material vanish overnight because Logos shuts its doors. I don't have that fear at the moment, but does Logos think they can endure until the return of Christ?
This is the question that haunts me sometimes.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! [:'(]
Concur my Logos.com orders page no longer has libronix update script links.
Personally wish Logos 4 information for resources would show resource licensing (so know when purchased license, then duplicated), which is available in Libronix 3.
Keep Smiling [:)]
I too no longer have the links for Libronix.
I am sad at this as well. [:'(]
I HATE L4 [:@] but I was able to download the Expositor's Bible to Libronix. The download script was attached to my email notification but no more download links found in our order history page.
I am very sad. [:'(]
If they stop making Libronix resources and change to making ONLY Logos 4 they will lose me as a user. I haven’t bought any resources that are L4 only except for a .99 book (which I copied and made into a PB for Libronix). I have downloaded the free L4 resources but they will not get any more money from me so I hope they continue to make L3 resources so I can give them my money.
Don't you want my money? [:D]
