Thoughts on L6 Starter vs Feature Crossgrade

I’m doing a bit of research on whether or not to upgrade to L6, I pretty much decided that Starter would be fine unless I go for the L6 Feature  Crossgrade. Anything higher seems to have a massive amount of extraneous resources which I have no use for. Of course, the salesperson at Logos wants me to go Bronze stating that I would not receive Factbook, Universal Timeline, etc. But reading a few of these threads it appears that Factbook and Timeline have problems. Just wondering and looking for a few thoughts and advice. Also, is there a way to compare L6 Starter and L6 Feature  Crossgrade?

For a start have you installed the free core engine available at https://www.logos.com/product/46767/logos-6-core-engine

And that's an important assessment as only you can determine what is of real value to you

As you are probably aware Factbook is available with the core engine (but limited by your library) and Universal Timeline is also available in the Core Upgrade.

As per my comment in the other thread where you raised this I wouldn't let any such problems put you off. They work well and provide useful functionality albeit there are some issues. Are there any specific issues which concern you?

You can do this at https://www.logos.com/compare?productIds=43516,45041 - basically use the "Select and Compare" button on the Logos 6 page.

Are there particular features you are interested in in any of these packages?

Dave M, It's hard to know how to comment without knowing how you use Logos now and what you envision.  I'm not sure what problems Factbook and TImeline have that are dissuading you at the moment.  Just in case, did you look through the Features page?  It has lots of info and you can expand to get more detail for much of it.  That may help you.  Or you can reply back with more detail on your use and perhaps others can offer guidance.

It is surprising how often this 'extraneous' material pops up as a link from a resource and provides just the explanation one is looking for.

Graham, thanks for this. I don't believe I have installed the free core engine (which probably means I have not). So if Factbook and Universal Timeline are included, that's good. Thanks for the link to compare. After browsing through that, I would appear that the Starter would be better. I'm not into Media and a lot of Data - except for the instruction videos. Just so you know, I pastor a small SBC church in Ohio and as of now I do all the teaching so I get focused more on commentaries and the like. Thanks for taking the time for such a comprehensive response. Greatly aids in the decision.

Thanks, Mike. I might just have to take my chances.

Steve, I guess I won't get too concerning with performance. That can always be corrected. I've been with Logos for about three years now and never really had a problem. I use Logos 5 now and for sermon and teaching prep.

I'd go ahead and do it - you get the benefits of some of the new features and this is where bug fixes are going to happen in general.

To clarify - Factbook is included in the core engine but Universal Timeline is not. That needs Bronze or one of the Crossgrades

That's helpful. Some of the things you get in the Core Upgrade not included in Starter are:

    • The Bible Books dataset
    • The Preaching Themes dataset
    • The Thematic Outlines dataset
    • The TImeline Dataset

all of which may be helpful in preparing for teaching / preaching.

But they don't include the commentaries you get in Starter - but you may already have the commentaries you need.

From a pricing perspective it will all vary depending on what you already have

I will take responsibility for having fanned the flames of doubts about Factbook and Timeline when I wrote "Timeline and Factbook are both feature areas that have received quite a bit of flak for not being fully fleshed out when they first were released" on this other thread. But I won't take responsibility for starting it. Bootjack posted about "the slow fix for Timeline / Factbook" and I confess I don't really know what he was referring to. So Dave is probably concerned about these features for no particular reasons he's aware of but only due to these rumors.

I'd like to hear from Bootjack specifically what he meant.

My comment was based on vague memories of people complaining that:

Rosie, Well, thanks ... I guess. I did not try to open a can or worms or put snakes on a plane. Just kinda wanted to get a few thoughts on some features of L6.

I'd like to point out that the features that get the most complaints are often features that work well and are used a great deal - hence the problems are noticed. I've become wary of newer features without complaints ... it may be they work so badly they aren't used much. [:#]
