Unfortunately, the UBS publications have never materialized.

Nope. And unless, UBS decides to be more open with their licensing, it won't happen.

    David,

Yes, but having paid hundreds of dollars for the UBS versions in the Scholar's Library, I am reluctant to shell out more.  To some degree it is an academic question.  I have since purchased Olive Tree and now have access to a quite readable GNT, BHS and LXX  with english meaning and morphology simply by touching the word on IPad or Iphone.

There are some features in which Logos is superior, for that reason, I wanted access to the works in the library in Ipad. If I had realized that these items were not available, I would have not purchased Logos 4 Upgrade. Oddly, Olive Tree have been able to secure the licensing.

I am not acting on as a Logos apologist on this, but they came into the mobile app department late in the game where as Olive Tree has many years of experience in dealing with this type of licensing.  Plus where is the profit margin for Logos, Bob may be a Christian, and the company may be populated by believers, but they are a "for profit" company. While, some of us upgraded to Logos 4 because of the iPhone app, I suspect we are in the minority, so there is not really a reason to pull out all the stops and re-negotiate all of their contracts.

Just my thoughts on the matter...

One of the reasons Logos sometimes struggle to get licensing agreements that other people have already secured is that Logos are committed to 'pay once, use on many devices'. If the publishers won't agree to that clause, then Logos won't make the resource available on the iPhone. (That's the situation with the NIV, for example.)

So, NIV is stopped because of the type of licensing that Logos does? I must have missed that post, I thought Logos had been silent on the subject, can you point me to that post?

I'm reading between the lines here. I could be wrong, but I can see no other reason.

    1. We know that the NIV is not currently available on the iPhone solely because of licensing issues.
    2. We know that it's not difficult to licence the NIV if you're a developer willing to pay the fee.

It's theoretically possible that territory issues could be behind the problem, but all the other iPhone developers have solved this. I'm sure if that was the issue, Logos would have solved it too. Therefore the only issue that I can imagine is Logos' buy once use anywhere policy.

It makes as much sense as anything Mark, no one else seems to have a problem getting this in a mobile application, I assumed that it was part of a larger licensing contract and that the sticking point was not just the NIV but was bound up in a bigger issue. Frankly, I have moved on, I love the L4 app and have no intention of ditching it just because it isn't mature yet, so I picked up another inexpensive Bible app for the iPad that gives me some missing functionality until Logos has time to develop their fully.

When you buy a book or Bible for other mobile apps, you pay for it. If you want to pay for it again on the Logos iPhone app, I'm sure we can secure licenses more quickly. What's more time consuming is coming to terms that allow us to let you view the book you paid for years ago on the desktop on the iPhone, without generating a new revenue event for the publisher.

Hey Bob What ever it takes to get our favorite resources to the iphone/ipad , so im ok paying for them again(i have most of them i just need few like Reina valera 1960)

Good or bad, right or wrong, I am anchored principally to the NIV.  If obtaining the rights for the NIV on the Iphone and the Ipad is going to be an extended effort, I would unhappily pay for it again, if I had the choice.  I know others who are not so tied -in and for other reasons would not share in this conclusion.

Thanks for the confirmation. I too would be happy to pay for the NIV, but I'd rather you held out for a fair deal. I have purchased at least six licences to the NIV over the years for different applications, and see no reason to put more money in Zondervan's pocket. Allowing licensing per user and not just per application is the only fair approach and one that I'm happy for you to take a stand on.

    Bob,

That may be the solution to this issue.  Through the years, I have purchased certain editions over and over again.  It does get tiresome.  However, I need the BHS, LXX and UBS editions for Logos on the ipad or iphone to be useable at all for me.

I had turned to Olive Tree to obtain that functionality and I had to pay for those books to use it.   If I had the option to add ipad/iphone editions for certain works which were giving you trouble over licensing, I might well do that.

I for one do not want to pay again.  It is one thing to pay for something in Olivetree and then pay a second time in Logos (back when I had a Palm I started using Olivetree).  Not that I like it then (when I paid a second time in Olivetree), it was like I had to buy all new books when I bought new bookshelves.  But to have to pay twice when using the same program is really unthinkable.

    Richard,

I understand you feeling, I think I have paid for original language texts over and over in various format's for the last 20-30 years.  If I added up the cost, it is probably approaching $2,000 at this point. I just bought the Ipad (Approx $600) to use for Bible Applications.

When I bought Logos 4 I saw that UBS was not available, but Lexham products were available.  I figured I would make do.  What I found was that the Lexham products are not functional on Iphone or iPad, in that  they appear with all information jumbled together.

So my reasoning was flawed due to non-disclosure. In reality, neither Lexham or UBS products were ready for prime time in iPhone/iPad.  For my purposes, I wasted my money on the upgrade.

At this point , Olive Tree works quite well on IPad and IPhone, one of the best interfaces just to read the original texts.  I want Logos 4 to gain access to additional lexicon's and language references included in the Scholar's Library.  This remain's my only objective.

So then, I am interested in obtaining a Logos 4 Ipad interface that provides controls for Lexham to make it functional or an functional version of UBS products for Ipad.( preferably without additional charge).

In reality, I have a philosophical issue with publisher's like UBS wanting to make a profit over and over again on the same text to the same person.  I am saddened by this approach. But  admire Logos current stance to fight for us and try to obtain licensing without additional charge.

I am also of the opinion that a user should only pay a publisher *once* and be able to access the ebook on whatever devise the person uses.

After all the publisher is already getting extra sales from ebooks compared to a paper book. With a paper book, I can buy one and my friend can buy another and then we can trade. One paper book means more than one reader (potentially) with no extra money to the publisher. With ebooks, publishers already get extra sales since sharing, trading, and loaning is not an option. So it makes no sense at all (except for greed) for publishers to ask for an additional payment for 1 user to access the same ebook on multiple devises.

So I hope Logos continues to encourage publishers to license their products for multiple devises. And I hope Logos will *prominently* indicate if a book is or is not available for all devises that Logos runs on. If publishers know that their books will be clearly marked as being limited to only 1 Logos devise, that may encourage them to loosen up or risk loosing some sales.

Oh, on reflection, I think a modest extra fee might be a thing. After all Logos has a bit of extra work to convert the files and a bit more cost in terms of bandwidth when we download and a modest additional fee might help publishers more quickly warm up to the idea of ebooks being accessible on multiple devises by the same user. I am thinking that a 10% additional payment would be OK by me. However, I would like that 10% additional to be based on what I paid per book in the various package discounts. If the 10% were calculated on list prices of the books, it could end up costing more like 50% to 75% or more.

I have paid for the NIV text many times over:

    • Every printed Bible or other work its in
    • Pradis
    • Logos3/4

I really would not want to pay yet again to read it via Logos for iThing (iPhone/iPod).

If its a physical book, I can loan it, give it away, swap it, sell it etc. I already dont like to pay as much for an ebook as for one I can loan/swap/sell/keep. Paying multiple times to the same company for different devices is not something I want to do, and if possible, wont!

Are there any plans to allow footnotes to be downloaded offline for the iPad app? I was reading my New Systematic Theology by Reymond on the train this morning and was a little bummed while my verse references worked great, my footnotes within the text were unavailable.

Having just ordered an iPhone, mainly so that I can use the Logos app. Im very dissapointed to read here that when it arrives I wont be able to use the NIV with this app. But having paid more than once for the NIV on Logos already (Being in Australia, I also purchased a UK English version) I can appreciate the stance Bob Pritchett is taking. Hopefully Logos can negotiate a speedy resolution to this problem. One of the reasons I purchased Logos 4 was in expectation of also using it on iphone. So while Logos may not (I'm speculating here) give priority to resolving this problem as it is for a free platform, I bought Logos 4 for the complete package which includes the free iPhone app.

It would be interesting to hear from Zonderman on how they can justify making Christians pay again and again for the same Bible. Without any information from them, it seems to be very unjust even for a profit based organisation to force users of their book to pay to have to buy it numerous times.

    Hi Howard:

I agree that one should not need to pay for the NIV again to use it on the iPhone.

But I would not quickly assume Zondervan is the real source of the problem. Zondervan is not the copyright holder - the International Bible Society is. Several years ago, the Canadian Bible Society gave up selling a very low cost pocket version of the NIV NT because the copyright holder wanted increased income. As I recall I had originally bought the pocket NIV NT for $1.95 (regular non sale price) but when I had worn that copy out, I was not able to get a replacement for less than $6 (triple the price in just 3 or 4 years). The reason the Canadian Bible Society rep told me was that the copyright holder had jacked up the royalty considerably.

My guess is the International Bible Society justifies its relatively high royalty demands as a way to raise additional funds for translations into languages that require subsidies.

I have not taken the time to write Zondervans and the International Bible Society to confirm what the Canadian Bible Society rep told me. Also my guess that the high royalties end up funding translations is an assumption on my part.

    Regards,

    Brian

Just thanks.  No, really.  you have to put up with us users and I know that you probably feel like (firtual) slapping some of us and saying duh....

Brad, I just wandered over here to inquire about the same thing - even though i know the answer is "We're not going to tell ya, cuz if we guess wrong you're all going to get mad at us."

All I can say after reading most of this entire thread (wowsers)  in the very first post, Ryan hints that highlighting and annotations are coming...

What is the product roadmap?Resource display enhancementsNotesHighlightingSearch enhancementsOther cool stuff I can't tell you about

So my big quandry is the same.  I don't want to spring for an IPAD but I really want a comfortable device for reading that does markup.  This is the decision point for me to have either an Ipad or an android tablet since the Android is likely to be similar to the ipad app I imagine it will have the same function.

As for what Brent posted above.... [y]  me too.

Hmm Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

    PLEASE WAIT!!!!!

Please be patient I expect the new iPad out before these new features are done (why not have the old pad cheaper or new pad for the same price), also you are right, new android devices are coming too, but until we have an android app we don't know for sure what it will be like. I believe the Android app will be more like the current iphone APP, they may make a version equal to the planed future iOS  but until we see what it can do we should assume it is a version that is like the current iOS version.

Having Logos on an Android would solve a huge number of user-problems (but unfortunately not the NIV problem).  Is there any plan or schedule to have linux reader and interface (in terms of years or decades) ??  This is the major buying criteria for many users and the primary reason that OliveTree makes Logos look sick in the phone/tablet world.

Back to the NIV question: I realized just a few days back that the NIV license that I have for Laridian PocketBible on my Windows Mobile device is also valid for the iPhone. I am very happy! [:D] I wonder why this does not work for Logos. [*-)]

  • Actually yes you can download books onto your device and use it off -line... :)
