When I update these collections in the future, Logos 8 users will see a notification in their docs menu which will allow you to easily update the collection to the new rules.

    Mark,

I wanted to switch to the auto-update approach. To do this, I deleted all the previous collection rules from you which I had copied manually. Then I followed the instructions of your first posting. However, all the collection rules ended up with a (2) at the end, e.g., Commentaries (Expository) (2). I then manually renamed this collection to Commentaries (Expository). Does this mean that the auto-update does not work any longer?

    Armin

    Mark,

Do you know if auto-update works if a collection has been renamed?

I don't know for certain, but I suspect it will still work as each collection has a UniqueID that persists after a rename.

I’m not very savvy when it cones to this stuff, but didn’t FL say to update the collection manually since they were rebranding the Lexham Guides? Wouldn’t the same apply to other series/collections? Maybe I’m way off, but I thought of bringing it up anyway 👍😁👌

For me, the collections appear to update, but the webpage tells me that they are out-of-date.

Thanks, Mark. Let's see what happens when you update the collections next time.

The unique ID has pros and cons. It is great if I just want to maintain the downloaded collection (which is what I want to do with Mark's collections). But I assume there are some people who download a collection and assume that they can make it their own by  renaming it. So if they modify the collection, their changes might be reversed with the next update of the original collection.

Mark, are you still updating the rules?

I'm a bit behind, but yes.

I've got 77 volumes in my library from 14 series, so there's quite a bit to do. A good chunk of those are the renamed Lexham Research Commentaries, the recently released Classic Studies on Job, and the revised Biblical Hebraica Quinta.

Hopefully, it will be done by the end of the week.

I updated these this evening. The changes were:

    Series added

    • Textual:
      • Biblia Hebraica Quinta
    • Historical (1750-1950):
      • A Commentary, Grammatical and Exegetical, on the Book of Job; With a Translation
      • The Biblical Cabinet; or Hermeneutical, Exegetical, and Philological Library
      • The Book of Job: Literally Translated from the Original Hebrew, and Restored to Its Natural Arrangement
      • Das Wort des Heils: Eine volkstümliche Auslegung der Bücher des Neuen Testaments
      • The Epic of the Inner Life: Being the Book of Job
      • Kommentar zum Neuen Testament
      • Kurzgefasstes Exegetisches Handbuch zum Neuen Testament
      • L’Apocalypse avec une Explication
    • Study Guides
      • John Stott Bible Studies
    • Expository:
      • The Lectio Continua Expository Commentary on the New Testament
    • Intermediate:
      • Lexham Research Commentary

There were also a few dozen volumes that aren't in a series. These have been classified in various ways, and are available to those who are accessing the shared collections.

    Hi Mark,

Many thanks for your diligent work keeping these collections up to date.

Unfortunately, for me, the automatic updating does not seem to work. All the previous collections that I downloaded from you still have last year's date. And I can't see any button or link or notification that would allow me to update them.

    Does it work for others?

At this link, the collections also have a date from last year.

If I go to your shared collection, I can "get a copy" and it shows then up in my collections with today's date however, with a number at the end  (e.g., Commentaries (Historical: 1750-1950) (3) ) because I downloaded them previously.

So the updating does not seem to work for me.

I'm on a PC (Win10) and paranoid about data loss. While it may be a little more complicated...

I downloaded the new collection rules, the new download attaches a (2) after the name. THEN I delete the original collection rule download. THEN I rename the collection rule by removing the (2)

Hello everyone. This is a list of collection examples I downloaded for the wiki page in the Logos website a few years ago. Enjoy and keep safe.

    God Bless You

I too have been having issues with some of Mark's collections not updating and I may have discovered part of the issue.

When I re-add the collections that will not update it automatically places a (2) after the collection name, obviously because the old one exists. When I delete the old copy and rename the new one in Logos it is no longer a shared document which will receive updates when Mark updates them. It becomes exclusively a private document during the renaming process. I am going to try deleting the original first and re-adding them. I've done this before and it still gave them a (2) after the name but I think it is because it needs a minute or two to sync before adding the new one.

It gets even more complicated but I figured it out. In Your Documents there is a dropdown menu which lets you select between Available, Shared, Private, and Deleted. If Logos detects any previous collections in any of these folders, including Deleted, it will append a number to the title. This is where it becomes a pain. I had to go into my Deleted section and Undelete all previous versions of the collection with the same name (the ones not updating) and then rename them. In my case I just added the word "old" to the document. This time when I deleted the documents and added Mark's it did not append a number to them and now they remain in my documents as an updatable version and not exclusively private. I hope this helps anyone else having this issue.

This would be MUCH easier to solve it we had the ability to empty out our Deleted section - kind of like "Empty Trash".

I believe this is what I did in the past and it did not work. But I will give it another try.

    Hi Mark,

I am sorry, but I don't remember. I assume I either downloaded them from the Logos webpage (https://documents.logos.com/) or from within the app (as described in your earlier posts). Is there a preferred way?

I've been using the older version of these commentary rules for a while but I was thinking about switching to the newer ones.  Is there any speed difference from the automatic ones to the regular copy/paste versions?

Someone started a forum post about how collections slow down your computer so I figured I'd give this a thought.  The reason why I like the copy/paste is because I've tinkered w/ the collection rules a bit.

If I switch to the automatic, can I still tinker w/ them or are you stuck w/ however they come?

    Hi Mattillo,

As a work around you can copy and paste the collection rules in the library and then select all and tag those resources and then create a collection, if you still need to using "mytag". New resources will not automatically be added is the only downside.

    Thanks

New resources will not automatically be added is the only downside.

That is equally true of the public collections if they are not being updated. Mark Barnes has reduced his involvement in the forums, but his rules always allowed a Tag for user preferences or new resources.

    That's a great idea. I haven't thought of this.

For whatever reason, Mark's collections do not update for me. Maybe because I modified them. But when I downloaded them manually, I realized they overwrite my own customization of Mark's rules. The mytag option might help me avoid this problem.

I actually converted all my collection rules to tags a few years ago. It is very efficient and not that my entire library is tagged, I can easily tag the resources I add. I think it is the best way to resolve the issues with collection rules.

This is a long shot but I used to have a bunch of collections that I got from a Faithlife group labeled Theology X where X would be dispensational or amillenial etc. I can’t remember for the life of me where I got that. Anyone seen that before?

    Disregard: Found it :)

I just did the same. But the large rule for the Historical Commentaries (1750-1950) is too long and does not work in the Library window. Unfortunately, I am not smart enough to break this rule down into two parts so that I can use two tags, which I then combine with a simple collection rule. Can somebody help me with this? Here is the entire rule:
