I actually converted all my collection rules to tags a few years ago. It is very efficient and not that my entire library is tagged, I can easily tag the resources I add. I think it is the best way to resolve the issues with collection rules.

I just did the same. But the large rule for the Historical Commentaries (1750-1950) is too long and does not work in the Library window. Unfortunately, I am not smart enough to break this rule down into two parts so that I can use two tags

+1 Yes for creating mytag collections using Mark Barnes collections with historical group modification (split Modern into two time periods plus added Contemporary & Recent):

    • Commentary1Antiquity (prior to 0599)
    • Commentary2Medieval (0600 to 1500) - some Library resources have Subject metadata: Middle Ages, 600-1500
    • Commentary3Reformation (1501 to 1749)
    • Commentary4Awakenings (1750 to 1900)
    • Commentary5Modern (1901 to 1950)
    • Commentary6Contemporary (1951 to 2000)
    • Commentary7Recent (2001 to Present)

FYI: reason for mytag collections is cache refreshing in a library having ~5,000 Bible Commentary resources (mytag is significantly faster than complex collection rules, but does require manual tagging of new Bible Commentary resources).

Sorting Titles in Library with Year prefixing provides easy way to select range of commentaries for historical grouping. Some commentaries quote Early Church Fathers and Medieval authors so prefix has range of years with mytag having more than one historical commentary group.

Added Jewish indicator to my Commentary Title conventions: (Asterisk has six points => Star of David reminder for me)

Commentary Titles (with preference for shorter abbreviated title to show in Passage Guide, Search Results, Tabs, ...)

    • ?< for Plagiarism Alert
    • #### for Year (content composition, which can be a range of years)
    • Language suffix: null = English, g = Greek, h = Hebrew, L = Latin
    • Jewish * OR Goyim (Gentile) space
    • Series (Abbreviation OR Initials of Primary Author)
    • (Author) is comma separated list of last name(s)
    • Separator is = for Top 2 and : for others
    • Original Title (helpful for searching Logos.com and forum resource discussions)
    • Optional suffix (Year translated/published)

    Abbreviated Title

    • #### Year (helpful for series with more than one commentary on a book)
    • Series (OR Author Initials) abbreviation
    • Jewish * OR Goyim (Gentile) space
    • Bible Book abbreviation(s)
    • Optional volume #

Two Library screen shots show Title variety:

Note: my custom series "Top 2 Commentaries" includes many volumes from https://www.bestcommentaries.com/topcommentaries plus several historical resources, especially Jewish commentary: e.g. John Lightfoot & Dr John Gill understood Jesus was Jewish so their comments include Rabbinic insights.

Cache refresh time depends on the number of collections and rule complexity, and logs confirm that it can take 40 secs or more. Faithlife claim that the new {....} extension syntax is much faster e.g.  {Author "Harris, Don"} instead of author:"don harris".

mytag: is faster because one tag can replace a complex rule involving many Authors and Titles. Also, you can use {MyTag "..."}.

When diagnostic logging is enabled, any collection search that takes over 250ms is written to Logos.log OR Verbum.log file: e.g.

    2020-06-19 08:17:07.0456  WARN 373 LibraryCatalog | (273ms, exceeded 250ms) Searching for all records matching: MyTag:Biography, Subject:(Autobiography,Biography,"Cranmer,Thomas","Hus,Jan",Martyr,Memoirs,Orphan,"Watts,Isaac","Wright,James",Wycliffe), Title:(Autobiography,"Biography of","Christian History","Correspondence of",Elisha,"English Baptists",Labors,"Letters of","Life of","Life and Letters of","Life and Times of","Lives of","Memoir of","Memoirs of","Memorials of") -Series:(Manuals,NIV,Pillar,Social-Science,Tyndale) -Title:"Life of Fellowship"

Note: my current Logos.log session had this rule taking over 250ms twice while Collection Cache had been refreshed 11 times. Withdrew older Biography rule collection from being shared with Logos Collections => https://faithlife.com/logos-collections/activity followed by sharing an updated Biography rule collection from my demonstration account (updated rule finds 11 in small demonstration library and 1,066 in larger purchased library so search time is noticeably different for collection cache refresh):

    {MyTag "Biography"}, Subject:(Augustinian,Autobiography,Biography,Carmelite,"Cranmer,Thomas",Erasmus,Grotius,"Hus,Jan",Isidore,Judson,Martyr,Memoirs,"Meyer,F.B.", Myles,Nee,Orphan,"Patrick,Saint",Simpson,Ussher,"Watts,Isaac","Wright,James",Wycliffe, Zwingli), Title:("12 Who Changed the World",Autobiography,Biographical,Biography,"Christian History","Correspondence of",Elisha,"English Baptists","Every Christian Should Know","Historical Works of","Introduction to the Works of",Labors,"Letters of","Life of","Life and Letters of","Life and Times of","Lives of",Memoir,Memoirs,"Memorial of","Memorials of",Memoriam,"Missionary to", Princetoniana,"Story of") -Series:(Manuals,NIV,Pillar,Social-Science,Tyndale) -Title:"Life of Fellowship"

Personally have experienced Collection Cache refresh taking a long time occasionally => Bug 8.14 Beta 1 Crash & Sluggish Collection Cache on macOS 10.15 and earlier Logos 7.13 Beta discussion mentioned collection cache refresh being faster after completely rebuilding Bible & Library index => Bug 7.13 RC 1 Search does not show Library results after 5 hours

Although the beefed-up commentary section in the Passage Guide means these collections are less necessary than they were previously, I do intend to update these collections for Logos 9, although it might take me a few days to do so.

I wanted to drop a note to say, thank you Mark Barnes, for your work categorizing the commentaries. For a layman like me, that was super helpful. Bless you bro!

    I believe in a Win-Win-Win God.

I've added the following commentary sets to the rules:

I've also added an additional 82 commentaries that are not in a series to the collections. You'll be able to see these if you get a copy of the collections using the links. You won't get them by copying/pasting the rules.

The rules now include every commentary in every Logos and Verbum base package from Logos 4 through to Logos 9, in addition to many thousands of other commentaries. It covers at least 5,300 volumes.

If you've previously added these collections to your documents, you'll need to refresh the link to get the latest version. Perhaps someone can remind us all how to do that!

I'd also be curious if anyone knows how to switch from the old version to the new links version.  I've always just copied and pasted.  To go to the links version what would I need to do?  Delete my collections and then follow the links?  Would I lose anything in that transition?

Just go to Docs > Public in Logos, search on Commentaries and you will see Mark's collections (sort by Date if necessary). Select what you want and click Add to your docs. If already in your Collections, the title will be appended with (2), (3), etc.

Even after deleting the original collection, the title will get the appended a number. Is there a way to get rid of these numbers?

Ok, found the solution. Collections can be renamed.

You might get that from Type in the Commentaries section of Passage Guide

Thanks, Dave, for this suggestion. I gave it a try, but the type is: --

So it looks like it has not yet been classified by Faithlife.

Not an expert, but, will offer comments. The series are E-Books and in my view they fit best as study guides. Most offer notes on Bible books, however, at least two offer notes on two of Augustine's works.

Meanwhile, Jesus kept on growing wiser and more mature, and in favor with God and his fellow man.

I would suggest you do that yourself if you already have the appropriate Collection (use the mytag: value that is at the end of the rule, rather than adding it by title/series).
