Logos 4.5 Release Candidate 1 is now available for testing. It should be released via automatic updates within the next two weeks, but you can install it now if you'd like to see what's new and improved.

The biggest change is that Notes and Highlighting have been unified. Each highlight is now backed by a note in one of your Notes Documents; from there you can change the highlighting style, add or remove the icon that shows next to the highlight in the resource, and even add textual notes to that highlight in your Notes Document. When you upgrade, you'll get new Notes Documents for your existing highlights (one per highlighting palette); you can now turn sets of highlights on or off by (un)checking that Notes Document in the visual filter menu for a resource. Logos 4.5 will also sync notes and highlights with the upcoming v2.0 of the iOS app (keep an eye on the iPhone/iPad forum for an announcement of when that's available in the App Store).

We've also improved Personal Book Builder and added the ability to print footnotes (at the bottom of a page) when printing a Logos resource. On Mac, we've added Font Scaling and other improvements to get more parity with the Windows version.

The full release notes are here: http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_4.5

To install the RC, download and run this installer: http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/LBS4MacInstallerBeta/Logos4Mac.dmg. (You won't be added permanently to the beta program; this will only install the current Release Candidate.)

Seeing as this is the Mac forum, I assume this announcement is just for Mac. Has there been an announcement about the release date of Windows 4.5 yet?

    Bradley -

I highlight every book I read. Do you recommend creating a separate note file for every book? My main note file was 115 pages. Do you see this causing problems? Is it better to have many small note files over a very large one?

Am also interested in this answer; I posted quite a bit more about my desire for info on the Win version of this thread.

There are lots of aspects to consider when answering this question, and I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all answer. Here's some thoughts that might help you decide what's best for you:

    Usability:

    • There will be one item on the File menu per Notes Document. Creating one per resource may be unwieldy (until the File Menu is improved).
    • We plan to allow sharing of Notes & Highlights between users; you will be able to share an entire Notes document at once. You may wish to organise your highlights thematically to allow easy sharing. For example, you might create one Notes Document called "Eschatology" and put highlights from dozens of different resources in it. You might then have another Notes Document (on a different topic) with different (and maybe even overlapping) highlights from those same resources.
    • The Visual Filters menu can be used to turn on/off highlights from a Notes Document on a resource-by-resource basis. If you have different sets of highlights that you'd like to see at different times, you should put them in different Notes Documents (so you can turn them off individually) rather than putting all highlights for one resource in one document.

    Performance:

    • We've worked hard to improve performance for lots of notes and highlights in 4.5. (Note that my remarks are written from a Windows background, but most of the code I worked on in 4.5 is shared between Windows and Mac, so it should still be applicable.) I have a test document with over 50,000 highlights that I've been using for testing. (I hadn't ever tried to print it, though. I just tried now and it crashed. [:S] A rough calculation showed that it would have been about 1,950 pages. I was able to successfully print a 275 page Notes Document containing about 8,000 highlights.)
    • Total memory use and performance will depend on the number of highlights in all Notes Documents that are turned on for all open resources. One Notes Document that contains every highlight you've ever added to any resource is probably the worst-case scenario. (Note that this was what 4.3 was doing essentially, so almost anything else will be better than that.) You should be able to improve performance by turning off infrequently-used sets of highlights, but we also hope that it shouldn't be necessary to micro-manage your files like that to get good performance by default.

Bradley, Thank you for sharing your thoughts/developer vision.  While I'm a Windows L4 users, I'll post here to keep the thread on topic:

    - Are there any plans to also add functionality in Notes that will enable users to more easily organize highlights?  I.e. if we will be able to sort notes by resource in 4.5, will we soon be able to grab all those notes by resource and move them into a new notes file in one movement?

    - I'm looking forward to an increase in Highlighting performance, especially in the ESV--which has become so slow for me to highlight in that it is pretty much not usable now.  If you want to clone my L4 highlighting and use that for your tests, please do--I don't know how many highlights I've got, but it is clearly causing 4.3 trouble.

    Hi Orpheus

If we wanted to download logos 4.5 release candidate for Windows, how do we do that?

Bradley provides a link to do this at http://community.logos.com/forums/t/43996.aspx

Wonder if sharing plans include Highlighting Palette and Styles along with visual filter definitions ?

Mike - You have three options:

    1. You can use the link that was provided above. This will download the latest beta, but will NOT put you on the beta channel. You will only get automatic updates when another release comes out on the stable channel. If another update comes out (which is likely), you will need to manually update the software.
    2. You can update your channel to beta. This will provide you with all beta updates until you change back to stable channel.
    3. You can wait until 4.5 goes live and it will automatically download.

If you are interested, you could give it a try. I would warn you, however, that you should read the general warnings about beta testing, found HERE. Beta software is not supported. If you rely upon your software, you may want to wait. If you do decide to wait, it will probably be within 2 weeks.

Wiki has => Logos 4 Beta Program with information and risks.  Before upgrading, could look at Logos 4.5 RC 1 issues being discussed in Mac Beta and PC Beta forums.  If encounter an issue in Logos 4.5 RC, wiki Mac Troubleshooting => How to Report Bugs in Logos 4 Mac has steps for posting.  Once Logos 4.5 is released to stable channel (likely later this month), then have option to contact Logos Tech Support (by phone or email).

Personally upgraded my wife to Logos 4.5 RC 1 this afternoon: changed update channel to Beta, downloaded and installed 4.5 RC 1, then changed update channel to Default for future stable releases.  My wife is Thankful for Font Slider working in Search Results.  She wants Logos 4 Mac to be stable; does not like Logos closing on its own (crash).  Thus far, Logos 4.5 RC 1 is working for her on an older MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.8; your mileage may vary.

Logos 4.5 does combine Highlighting and Notes along with Sync v2 updates so having your sync up to date in all your Logos 4 installations before upgrading is prudent.  Recommend reading release notes => http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_4.5  Thankful for many Logos 4.5 improvements along with previous three Logos 4.5 Beta releases primarily focused on fixing bugs.

If using Logos 4 on more than one computer, upgrading to Logos 4.5 does disable some sync items with Logos 4.3; option is upgrading all computers: one at a time, especially if have lots of Highlighting to convert to Notes.

I have L4 installed on a Mac and PC. For the moment I have updated the Mac to RC1, but intend to keep the PC on the stable channel (just in case there are any issues as I need L4 over the weekend).

I understand that sync is disabled between RC1 and 4.3.

I want to make sure that I do not mess up my notes in anticipation of 4.5 going gold and the PC end automatically updating.

I presume, therefore, I am safer making updates and alterations to my notes on either the RC1 installation or 4.3 and not both (so that when the PC end updates, the sync doesn't run both ways).

Will I be safe running the RC1 and stable version over two computers if I only amend and update the notes and highlights on the RC1 version? Has anyone else experienced problems with this?

The alternative would be to update the PC end to RC1 also. I would rather do this (and take the risk of run beta on both) if this is the surest way to safeguard my notes.

If both Logos 4.3 installations are up to date for sync, then upgrade one to Logos 4.5 RC 1, prudent to choose one computer for highlighting and  note changes until ready to upgrade the other installation.

Will I be safe running the RC1 and stable version over two computers if I only amend and update the notes and highlights on the RC1 version?

In theory, Yes.  Personally unable to test since I already have Logos 4.5 RC 1 running on Mac and PC.

After weekend need for Logos 4 is done, could update PC to Logos 4.5 RC 1, which enables sync between Mac and PC.

Looking at  http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_4.5 noticed potential for font slider changes to hang program in search results.  Irony: I have crashed Logos 4.5 RC 1 on PC by clicking "more" on Home Page => Crash in Home Page (easy to avoid issue)

    Hi Bradley

Just noticed the inclusion of gestures on the mac side, this mentions a right click of the mouse and drag in direction.... how usable are these for those us who purely use the trackpad??

Will there be a update to this to utilise trackpad only??

    [quote]

    Gestures

    • Click on the right mouse button and drag in the directions indicated below to initiate various functions. A tip will appear, for about 5 seconds, displaying the recognized gesture with description below. For additional help with gestures, please see the Logos Bible Software wiki article on Gestures to see screenshots with gesture movements (taken from Windows version).
      • left = go Back
      • right = go Forward
      • up = Previous article, etc.
      • down = Next article, etc.
      • down, right = Close Tab
      • down, up = New Tab
      • “C” shape = toggle Contents Pane on or off
      • “star” shape = add to Favorites (try this: up right, down right, up left, right, down left)
      • up to the right diagonally = Show reading view
      • down to the left diagonally = Hide reading view
      • down to the right, down to the left (i.e., right angle bracket or ‘greater than’) = Start Read Aloud
      • “square” shape (down, right, up, left) = Stop Read Aloud

    Dear KS4J,

Once again, thanks very much for the kind assistance.

I think I will go with your advice once the weekend is out of the way (sermons and studies to prepare, and so, busy, busy, busy...).

Is there a reliable download source for this dmg? FTP or something ...

15 tries now ... it gets so far and stops ... just stops (firefox, chrome, safari) ... the point at which it stops is different every time ... the only similarity is that it will stop.

No other site ever gives me download problems (living in London) ... only downloads from Logos ... which is already the slowest site to browse (forums or website ... ... the responsiveness is usually 10 seconds per click ... often longer ...  even the smilies freeze 3/4 times ... 4/5 times ... 5/6 times .... 'waiting for community.logos.com' ...)

    Thanks.

The important thing is whether you have enabled right-click highlighting yet.

    Martin,

If you have the software installed you don't need to redownload a .dmg file to update. From within the program you type update now in the command bar. If you are not already beta testing you will need to type set update channel to beta in the command bar first.

    Blessings,

I have a test document with over 50,000 highlights that I've been using for testing.

I started thinking about this and got fairly worried. 50,000 may sound much, but it isn't. It's just 5,000 pages with 10 highlights each. 5,000 pages is what a Swedish university student is supposed to read in one single term (or at least it was in my time). So if that's the most you've tested with, I would definitely not recommend people who rely heavily on highlighting to put all of it in a single note file.
